News from Asha Appel, Head of Upper School
9/14/17
Sixteen years ago, I was a department chair at an all-girls boarding school on the East Coast when the World Trade towers collapsed. Kids and adults felt scared, shocked,
and shaken; for most of us, there was no precedent, and we didn’t know how to navigate what we were suddenly and unexpectedly witnessing and feeling. On that day, my
9th grade advisees–who had only been away from home for a week–came to my house to watch the events unfold, helplessly, but stronger together. In the darkness of that
which was painful and real, we made our way together, figuring out how to survive and thrive as we went along. I imagine that is the case for many in the wake of
Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, for those in Mexico living in the aftermath of the earthquake. In these worst of times, communities are formed, and it is in community that we
are our best selves.
Last week, in fortunately much safer circumstances, I had the chance to see communities form and strengthen at Camp Westwind and Camp Magruder. At Westwind, I
watched the somewhat magical transformation as the 9th graders became a group, a class ready to work and grow together during the next four years. At Magruder, I
watched the seniors brainstorm for their theme, wrestle through the discoveries they made about the constraints of working together for cohesion, and accept and
navigate the distinction between their vision and the realities of deadlines. (Creating the Senior Entrance in three days is a tight timeline, indeed!). The adults involved in
both these trips made room for our kids to be independent within the boundaries of safety; they made it possible for kids to take risks and make mistakes and get messy
and wet and sandy. The 9th grade trip is about building trust between the kids, who learned to listen to and accept each other by sharing and laughing at their mistakes.
They also learned to recognize that their teachers and coaches and counselors, who will support them in the inevitable difficulties and disappointments to come, have their
best interests at heart, especially when they challenge kids to do something hard. And the students began to see that hard work, though hard, is also worth it. So it is that
by the time they enter the fall of their final high school year, OES students are able to take initiative to develop and commit to a year-long theme that will set the tone for
the whole school. They will emerge as sui generis leaders who support each other and make difficult decisions. And, as this year’s seniors did, they will celebrate themselves
and their community in grand style: with music, candy, costumes, and “Good V18es.”

Sports Leadership Certification Class
Asking student-athletes to be leaders without preparing them for the responsibility is unfair. Often much is expected of our leaders, but seldom do we intentionally teach
them the necessary skills in order for them to do the job effectively. The OES Leadership Certification class is designed to give Aardvark student-athletes with interest in
leadership the same instruction, encouragement and practice that we give athletes before competition.
This class is recommended for all students, grades 9-12. We welcome back students who have previously taken the class, as the topics and discussions are always evolving.
Students will have the opportunity to “Explore” what it takes to be a leader, “Connect” with their peers, “Commit” to leadership, and “Create” their own leadership style.
Based on the work of Jeff Janssen, M.S., and his publication “The Team Captain’s Leadership Manual,” members of the OES coaching staff, guest speakers and the athletic
department will each present on a variety of topics, from the power of leadership to the skills needed to become an effective leader. In this ten-week program of
approximately 60-90 minute sessions, students will engage in conversations and exercises around these important concepts.
Dinner will be provided as many athletes are coming directly from practice.
Cost is $30 to cover the price of the book.
For more information or to reserve a spot please contact , Associate Athletic Director.Missy Smith

Piecing Me Together,
“Watson's elegantly crafted novel speaks to the myriad of people who find themselves searching for themselves in the world. Timely and timeless, is a
book about the ways young people deal with the hardships and heartbreak of everyday living while remaining whole and true to themselves. There is a little bit of Jade in all
of us. As she and the rest of Watson's characters jumped off the page and into my heart, I found myself again and again, remembering this.” –

(NEW) Sophomore “Backpack” Trip Goes Coastal
On the first day of school, the OES sophomores usually head out on a three-night backpacking trip. This year, though, the fires in the region forced us to seek a different
sort of adventure, and instead the sophomores headed to Cape Lookout State Park.
Although our backpacking trip transformed into a coastal camping and hiking adventure, students learned the principles of LNT (Leave No Trace) and talked about
minimizing human impact on our beloved natural wonders. Some groups practiced using a map and compass, others participated in sand castle competitions and water
purification lessons. Most importantly, the sophomores shared challenges and fun and built connections with their classmates.
Stay tuned to the next for our upcoming blog with featured photos and stories from the 2017 Sophomore Trip.Voice
Thank you to all of our Sophomores, Parents, Guides and Faculty for making the trip possible!
