FOREWORDThis standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the IndustrialSafety Sectional Committee had been approved by the Chemical Division Council.IS 8521 ( Part 1 ) : 1977 Specification for industrial faceshield : Part I With plastic visor is meant foruse by industrial workers in tool working operations against chips and saw dust, in metal machiningoperation against flying particles, in buffing, polishing and grinding operation where particles maystrike the face, in spot welding and in handling of corrosive materials. The industrial safety faceshields( with wire mesh visor ) covered by this standard may be used to protect face against heat and glarefrom the furnaces and wherever heated material is handled. In the preparation of this standard, assistance has been taken from the ANSI Z-87.1-1984 Practice foroccupational and educational eye and face protection, published by the American National StandardsInstitute, USA.The composition of the committee responsible for formulation of this standard is given at Annex A.For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, thefinal value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised . The number ofsignificant places retained in the rounded off value shall be the same as that of the specified value In thisstandard.

    PART 2 WITH WIRE-MESH VISOR

1 SCOPEThis standard prescribes requirements for indus-trial faceshields with wire mesh visor used forprotection of the face against heat and glareduring furnace operations and operationsinvolving hot material, molten metal and slags, and their methods of test and sampling.2 REFERENCES2.1 The following Indian Standard is necessaryadjunct to this standard:

IS No. T i t le4905 : 1968 Method for random sampling3 CLASiGIFICATIONThe faceshields shall be of two types dependingupon the size of the visor as mentioned below:

Typ e 1 - Faceshields with visor size of230 mm in width and 230 mm inlength, and

Typ e 2 - Faceshields with visor size of305 mm in width and 230 mm inlength.4 MATERIALS4.1 Materials used in the manufacture of face-shields shall be non-magnetic, heat resistantand shall have mechanical strength and light-ness of weight. The materials shall also be non-irritating to the skin.4.2 The headgear of the faceshield shall befabricated of suitable heat resistant materials ofat least 1.4 mm thickness. Headgear shallconsist of a crown band of at least 25 mmwidth, an adjustable bead-band and sweatband. The adjustable devices shall be made of non-sparking heat resistant material capable ofwithstanding temperatures up to 150C withoutgetting deformed and shall have no sharpedges.4.3 Visor shall be manufactured in the form ofplain weave type wire mesh with stainless steelor other such non-magnetic materials. The

wire-mesh shall be made out of wire of 0.5 mmdiameter.5 REQIJ IREMENTS5.1 DesignThe faceshields shall be designed to provideprotection to the face ( that is, the front ofthe head including forehead, eyes, cheeks, nose, mouth and chin ) and neck, when required, from heat and glare during furnace operationsand handing of hot materials, molten metal andslags. Both Type 1 and Type 2 faceshields shallbe designed for comfort and shall be worndirectly on the users head. The faceshields of both the types shall consistessentially of a headgear including an adjustablehead-band and crown band, a durable tiltingvisor support with or without crown protector, metal wire-mesh visor and a removable andreplaceable sweatband. The faceshield shall besimilar to Fig. 1 and shall also comply with thetest requirements specified in 5.4.5.1.1 H eadgearThe design of the headgear shall be such as tohold the visor and visor support comfortablyand firmly in place on the wearers head, andshall have provision for tilting the visor awayfrom the face. Adjustable bands of the face-shield headgear shall be of the positive lockingtype of adequate range and adjustable at backand top with the help of ratchat or wing nutarrangement. The headgear shall be adjustablewithout the use of tools and shall hold firmly inplace after being so adjusted. The crown strapor band shall be attached to, and extendedbetween, the front and rear centres or from themiddle sides of the headband. lt shall form anarch over the head to assist in positioning andholding the headgear in place. All mechanismsand movements shall be protected so that thewearers hair cannot catch in the adjustingdevices. Not less than the forehead portion ofthe headband shall be provided with a remova-ble and replaceable cushioned sweatband thatshall be non-irritating and non-toxic.

Visor supports shall be provided withsnap fastener studs or a combination of snapfastener studs with other suitable holder studsfor attaching the visor in a secured manner.Studs shall be equidistantly spaced to providefor maximum interchangeability. Support shallbe attached to the headgear by friction jointswhich permit tilting of the visor either upwardto be clear of the horizontal vision line or down-ward to a position of maximum protection withclearance for the nose, and over eye-glasses or

goggles when used. The tension of the tiltingmechanism shall be sufficient to hold the visorin up or down position without slippage.5.1.3 VisorThe wiremesh visor shall be made of stainlesssteel wire and weaving area between the wiresshall be 1 mm2. Edges of wire-mesh of the visorshall be covered on all sides with soft aluminiumsheet of 10 mm width and minimum O-5 mmthickness. The upper side of the visor shah alsobe covered with soft aluminium sheet of mini-mum 0.5 mm thickness and 20 mm width. Thealuminium sheet shall be rivetted to the visorwith suitable material. Bottom corners andsharp edges shall be rounded off. The wire-meshvisor shall be similar to that shown in Fig. 2and shall also comply with the test requirementsgiven in 5.4.
