Six Degrees Of Separation

June 6 thru June 22 Stray Dog Theater at Tower Grove Abbey

John Guare’s drama elevates a New York City anecdote into an extraordinary theatrical experience. After an unexpected encounter with a young man introduced as the son of Sidney Poitier, Upper East Side socialite Ouisa Kittredge delights in the notion that it only takes a chain of six people to connect anyone on the planet with anyone else. As one of Guare’s characters says: ‘I read somewhere that everybody on this planet is separated by only six other people. Six degrees of separation between us and everyone else on this planet. The President of the United States, a gondolier in Venice, just fill in the names. I find it extremely comforting that we’re so close. I also find it like Chinese water torture, that we’re so close because you have to find the right six people to make the right connection ... I am bound, you are bound, to everyone on this planet by a trail of six people.’ But what happens to those of us who are eternally separated from others because we cannot find the right six people?

A ‘degree of separation’ is a measure of social distance between people. You are one degree away from everyone you know, two degrees away from every-one they know, and so on in a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. The theory was first proposed in 1929 by the Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy in a short story called “Chains.” The concept was popularized by John Guare’s play, Six Degrees of Separation. The idea entered into pop culture after Brett C. Tjaden published a computer game on the University of Virginia’s Web site using the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) to document connections between different actors giving us The Oracle of Ba-con or, as most of know it, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Thus, we are all linked by a string of seven or fewer acquaintances to Madonna, the Dalai Lama and the Queen of England. The trick and need as stated by Guare is finding the right six people.

Tower Grove Abbey & Stray Dog Theatre are located at 2336 Tennessee Avenue near Tower Grove Park and Missouri Botanical Garden. For infor-mation about this play and others at Stray Dog go to www.straydogtheatre.org or call 314-865-1995.

Urban Gardening: You Can Grow Food, No Matter Where You LivePosted on Nov 30, 2010 in DIY Projects, Urban Gardening, Farming & Homesteading

Gardening is regaining popularity as a pastime for all types of people across the world, with gardens popping up in the most unexpected places. While the traditional image of a garden may not exactly fit into the reality of most urban environments, the fact is you can grow your own food whether you live on a rural farm or in a tiny Manhattan apart-ment. Urban gardening is all about using space wisely to regain a closer connection with your food and beautify your home or neighborhood.

There are a handful of different types of urban gardens, and the ones we’re going to focus on here are indoor gardening, container gardening, community gardening and guerilla gardening. Perhaps you’ve got a tiny townhouse yard, a balcony, a south-facing window – or perhaps you live in a basement apartment that won’t support anything but mold. You can still grow enough of your own food to save a considerable amount of money and enjoy the freshest, healthiest produce possible.

Container gardening allows urban residents with small yards, patios or balconies to grow practically any plants in practically any container that will hold soil. One of the most fun parts of growing food in containers is that you can get incredibly creative with coming up with new uses for old junk. Wine barrels, used tires, feed sacks, kiddie pools, buckets, leaky watering cans and even shoes are among the items intrepid container gardeners use – and that’s just the beginning.

Raised beds make a great alternative to containers and allow you to grow a lot more. Like containers, they can be placed on hard surfaces like concrete slabs or rooftops and are great for smallish spaces or yards where the soil quality isn’t so great. Raised beds are freestanding structures typically made from wood, stone or concrete that are filled with soil and compost. Most often, they’re constructed of planks of wood screwed or nailed together in sizes typically ranging from 3’ x 8’ to 5’ x 20’ and are between 8” to 3 feet in height. They keep soil warmer, provide better drainage and require less maintenance than traditional gardens.

Beginners and experienced urban gardeners alike will also enjoy FreedomGardens.org, an online social community of gardening enthusiasts “digging their way to a free and secure food future”.

Okay, so growing pumpkins, corn or zucchini indoors probably isn’t all that feasible. But, any window that gets at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day can support leaf crops like lettuce, endive and arugula as well as small-crop tomatoes, peppers, root crops and even bush beans.

Growing vegetables indoors requires different soil requirements, watering, pollination, and pest control techniques than doing so outdoors. You must also consider things like air circulation and ambient temperature. You may need supplemental lighting – cheap shop lights from the hardware store work just as well as expensive grow lights.

If you’re a total novice and growing veggies in your kitchen window seems intimidating, try herbs first. Chives, basil, parsley, oregano, cilantro, peppermint and rosemary are among the herbs that do well indoors and they’ll add lots of fresh, pesticide-free flavor to your meals.

David A. Dorsey, MD

The severity of the reaction tends to decrease with age, especially in people who have had mild reactions in the past. Repeated exposure to poison ivy increases the risk of having a reaction.

POISON IVY SIGNS AND SYMPTOMSAfter contact with urushiol, the oil found in all parts of the plant, approxi-mately 50 percent of people develop signs and symptoms of poison ivy dermatitis. The symptoms and severity differ from person to person. The most common signs and symptoms of poison ivy dermatitis are:Intense itching • Skin swelling • Skin rednessThese symptoms usually develop within four hours to four days after expo-sure. After the initial symptoms, fluid-filled blisters develop in a streak-like pattern. The symptoms are worst within 1 to 14 days after touching the plant, but can develop up to 21 days later if you have never been exposed before. The blisters can occur at different times in different people; blisters can de-velop on the arms several days after blisters on the hands developed. This does not mean that the reaction is spreading from one area of the body to the other. The fluid that leaks from blisters does not cause symptoms. Poison ivy dermatitis is not contagious and cannot be passed from person to person. However, the toxic oil can be carried under fingernails and on clothes; if another person comes in contact with the oil, they can develop poison ivy dermatitis.POISON IVY TREATMENTPoison ivy dermatitis usually resolves within one to three weeks without treatment. Treatments that may help relieve the itching, soreness, and dis-comfort caused by poison ivy dermatitis include:Skin treatments — For some people, adding oatmeal to a bath, applying cool wet compresses, and applying calamine lotion may help to relieve itching. Antihistamines — may help to relieve itching caused by poison ivy der-matitis. Some antihistamines make you sleepy while others do not.Steroid creams — Steroid creams may be helpful if they are used during the first few days after symptoms develop. Low potency steroid creams, such as 1% hydrocortisone are not usually helpful. A stronger prescription formula may be helpful.Steroids — If you develop severe symptoms or the rash covers a large area (especially on the face or genitals), you may need steroid pills or injec-tions to help relieve itching and swelling.Antibiotics — Skin infections are a potential complication of poison ivy, especially if you scratch your skin. If you develop a skin infection because of poison ivy dermatitis, you may need antibiotics to treat the infection.

Source: uptodate.comQuestions or suggestions for future topics: email [email protected]

POISON IVYWhen the skin comes in direct contact with an irritating substance, such as poi-son ivy, contact dermatitis can develop. Exposure to poison ivy (as well as oak and sumac) cause more cases of allergic contact dermatitis than all other plant families combined.
