The Servant Leader Values Humility …1 Peter 3:15 says “but in our hearts set Christ apart as Lord and always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that you have … but do this with gentleness and respect”. This verse reminds all Christians that we do have a voice, and it is a voice to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a wonderful message that we have and one that needs to be shared because it is a message of hope.

Whilst the servant leader values humility, they also value telling the story of the hope that we have been given. At the College, we are a community established on faith and whilst we attend different Churches, we have our faith in common – a faith that acknowledges Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour of the Universe, that God is His Father and that the Holy Spirit indwells in our hearts. These are extraordinary facts and they bind us together and give us purpose, strength and also provide great comfort.

However, the race to maturity and humility is hard fought and whilst we can get there, it will not be without a lot of hard work and self-discipline.

Micah 6:8 says “He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God”.

K 9 Junior School News

Mrs Kerry Paterson | Head of Junior School Welcome to Term 2, Week 9.

Over the past four weeks, Junior School has looked at; “Jesus who changes lives”. Wherever Jesus went, lives were changed. People were impacted by His love and challenged about the way they were living their lives.

We looked at examples of Jesus’ love and acceptance towards someone who was rejected by parts of society (the woman at the well), an invitation to be a part of someone’s life (Zacchaeus), encouraging someone already committed to Him to take that commitment to a deeper level (Martha), and giving someone love and a second chance even after failure (Peter).

The Bible is not a book of stories just from the past, but it is alive and active today and Jesus still wants to be a part of our lives, to give us the opportunity to make choices to bring about positive change in our own lives. These lessons are designed so that the children will, in time, be able to identify with the people in the stories and make positive choices in regard to Jesus, themselves and others. The challenge is there for us as well. Does knowing Jesus change your life? I know knowing Jesus has changed my life.

Our verse continues as: “Don’t let the errors of evil people lead you down the wrong path and make you lose your balance. Let the wonderful kindness and the understanding that come from Jesus help you to keep on growing.” 2 Peter 3:17-18 (CEV)

Reports for Junior School – Friday 23 June

Please check your child’s school bag this Friday for their report. I hope reading it with your child will be an opportunity for reflection, celebration for those who have given their very best effort, and the beginning of goal setting for Semester 2.

Our Junior School reporting schedule is:

Term 1: Three way conference (Parent/Teacher interviews) Yearly Goal Setting;

Term 2: Written report (Parent/Teacher interviews on request are available);

Term 3: Three way conference (Parent/Teacher interviews) Goal Achievement Review;

Term 4: Written report (Parent/Teacher interviews on request are available).

Although Junior School do not have a formalised Parent/Teacher interview in Term 2, parents are very welcome to meet with a teacher if they feel the need after receiving their child’s report. This is done by contacting your child’s teacher directly and not through our computerised booking system. The teachers are available:

• Tuesday, 27 June (After or before class hours)

Please read the information letter accompanying the report to assist in fully understanding the common grade scale and the Key Learning Areas' (KLA’s) heading meanings from the NSW Curriculum. Teachers are extremely knowledgeable on the NSW Curriculum and our reporting format. Please ask if you have questions. The team is ready to assist you.

Socks, Beanies, Gloves and Scarves – Collecting for Coast Shelter

Tristan from Mr Matthew’s class is behind this caring gesture, inviting all Junior School to join him in collecting these items to donate to those who are homeless and cold this winter.

If you would like to send in beanies, warm gloves and socks or scarves, Tristan’s mum is helping him take them to Coast Shelter. This Friday is our last collection day, but I am sure if you send any in next week, we will certainly get them to Coast Shelter.

You are never too young to lead. We celebrate student initiated leadership.

Well done Tristan, and thank you to the many families that have donated items.

K 9 Secondary School News

Mr Peter McLellan | Head of Secondary School

We are entering a very busy time here at the College as we head up to the mid-year break. It is really important we continue to finish the term in a manner which meets the boundaries and expectations that are set up to run the College, in a way that enables a productive Christian learning community to exist. This really starts in our relationships, whether in person or online, reflecting the positive building up of one another in all situations. It is always important that we stand up and fight against those who would run another person down. Here is an article that really focuses on how we can develop strong relationships with our children at home, which I thought was a positive input that we can all follow:

The Benefits of Positive Parenting ...

As a parent, you’ve no doubt looked out for your child through all their early years. Now that they’re an adolescent, they crave independence and the freedom to make their own choices. “As our kids grow into teenagers, they gain a great deal of independence,” says Planned Parenthood. “That’s a normal and natural part of growing up. But even as they increase their independence, we need to keep our relationships as close to them as we did when they were small children. They still need us to love, guide, and have fun with them.”

As much as your teen wants to control his or her own life, you as a parent need to project some measure of guidance and authority. Although a teen may be convinced that they know everything there is to know and that they’re old enough to make their own decisions, a lack of life experience can hinder them from making the right decisions. This ties into the fear of any parent: that their teen will begin moving toward harmful behaviours.

Teenagers tend to experiment with their own boundaries and experiences, and they can be especially susceptible to peer pressure. Although you can’t be around every hour of every day to monitor your teen’s behaviour, you can act as an authority figure, as well as someone to talk to and confide in. You just have to be sure you’re communicating to your teen that you’re present, and that any concerns you have are borne out of love and for their own benefit.

Communicating that you understand your child’s adolescent independence but the parent is still the boss is important for setting healthy boundaries and creating a solid family structure. The goal is to raise a healthy, well-balanced young adult who knows right from wrong, cares about others, and takes pride in themselves and their abilities. This may seem like a tall order, but the adolescent years are the best time to start.

Here are five ways you can help keep your relationship with your teenager strong and happy for both sides:

1. Spend time together.

When a child becomes a teenager, it suddenly becomes a lot less cool to hang out with Mum and Dad. However, reinforcing family structure can help provide support and a sense of well-being for a teen — not to mention a potential avenue for a teen to confide in a parent. WCSAP suggests bonding activities such as family meals (without the TV on or cell phones present), joint chores, board game nights, or volunteering. Any way you can ensure your teen knows that you’re present can be a good thing as they struggle through adolescence.

2. Set a good example.

You don’t need to be a saint, but it certainly helps for teens to look up to their parents as role models for their own behaviour. Be mindful of how many substances you use in front of your teen — including excessive alcohol and smoking — as they can easily mimic what they see at home as acceptable habits.

3. Set boundaries.

You may have a young adult in the house, but you are still the main adult, and you need to make sure your child knows that you’re the one who sets the limits. The National Institute on Drug Abuse focuses on the importance of calmly and firmly setting boundaries for your teen. Not providing boundaries can lead to teens going into adulthood with the disjointed sense of having too much freedom.

4. Be respectful.

With the prevalence of cyber-bullying, teens these days have more to worry about than ever when it comes to criticism and taunts. “Teasing can feel like torture to a sensitive teen,” notes WCSAP. Don’t make fun of your teen, no matter how lightly, and refrain from using negative language or put-downs. Hearing this from their parental figure can hurt a teen’s self-esteem, and can make them feel unhappy and unsafe at home.

5. Show you care.

Whether it’s by making them a special lunch or by sending them notes “just because,” it’s important that your teen feels loved and supported by their parents during these turbulent years. If you have a fight with your teen, take the time to apologise and emphasise that you love them no matter what. Put a focus on the strength and unconditional love of the family unit, and encourage your teen to be a part of that as well.

It’s not always easy being the parent of a teenager, but it’s absolutely worthwhile to take the time to foster a strong, healthy relationship that promotes respect and love between both parties. Although every teenager is different, it’s fundamental that a parent provide both guidance and support as their child works through the storm of adolescence.

Student Drivers (Years 11 and 12)

It is really important that as a student begins to drive to school they complete the Student Driver’s Permission Form. Thank you for your help with this matter.

CSSA Secondary Netball Gala Day

On Monday 19 June both Junior and Senior Girls participated in the CSSA Netball Gala Day in Penrith. It was perfect weather and the girls represented our College with great team spirit and sportsmanship in each of their games. The Senior Girls finished 3rd in their Pool after coming up against some very strong teams. The Junior Girls progressed undefeated into the Quarter Finals, first in their Pool. In the Quarter Final they played a very strong game tying, but unfortunately lost in extra time. Both teams should be congratulated on their behaviour and performance which was exemplary on a very fun day. Great work, girls.

CIS Primary Boys Softball Trials

Last week, Darcy Lloyd-Phillips and Taj Lyons represented Green Point Christian College at the CIS Primary Boys Softball Trials in Blacktown, partaking in a number of drills and game situations throughout the day. It was a very tough trial, with many boys from private schools around NSW competing for the chance to be in the CIS team. At the end of the day, both of our boys were successful in being named in the CIS Softball team which is a superb achievement.

Well done to both Darcy and Taj.

CIS Cross Country Championships

Last Thursday, our largest team (10 students) ever competed at the CIS Cross Country Championships, held at the Eastern Creek Raceway. All of our teams ran at a very fast pace against a high level of competition. They all gave everything they had, they were happy with their own effort, team effort and results.

Congratulations to Elfie Piper, who has dominated Cross Country this year and was aiming for a top 10 finish at CIS. He went out at such a fast pace, taking the lead, and kept that pace for the entire race, winning the 9 Years Boys event. Elfie is the first Green Point Christian College student to ever win a CIS Cross Country Primary race and this is an amazing result.

9 Years Girls: Olivia Melenewycz 62nd (10mins 01secs); Mina Brisebois 64th (10mins 02secs); Sophee Uzelac 70th (10mins 12secs); Bronte McKee 76th; (10mins 17secs)

9 Years Boys: Elfie Piper 1st (7mins 44secs); Charlie McKee 21st (8mins 25secs); Kyne Baird 65th (9mins 01secs);Killian Byrne 80th (9mins 25secs)

10 Years Boys: Clinton Fourie 34th (8mins 16secs)

11 Years Girls: Emma Duggan 44th (15mins 50secs) (3kms)

I was privileged and also very impressed to see our runners' focused attitude in such a prestigious event. I was also extremely proud to hear that of our students, Killian, stopped his race to help another student up (that he didn’t even know) who had fallen over. Finally, I would like to wish Elfie all the best for the PSSA Cross Country Championships which are held in July. He is the first representative of our College to qualify for these Championships in 8 years.
