3 THE CHRONICLE - JULY/AUGUST 2012
Dear People of God
It is hard to think that next weekend is La-
bor Day weekend, and the Sunday follow-
ing is the first Sunday of our new program
year. What in heaven’s name happened to
the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer ?
A lot has been happening around our campus this
summer. First, you have no doubt seen all of the
heavy equipment on Afton Avenue, the chopped
down trees, mud, ditch digger, pump, and the now-
wait-you-go people flagging cars on Afton. It is the
beginning work of the Afton Avenue Streetscape
which has been planned for several years. The Bor-
ough solicited and won a grant from the Department
of Transportation to make bike and walking paths
from the lake down to the river. The Church was
asked to provide a storage area for the contractor’s
equipment and supplies. After a number of conversa-
tions, no little horse trading, the usual screaming and
hollering (this is Yardley Borough, after all), our Ves-
try made arrangements to have several trees removed
by the contractor, which we were going to have to re-
move anyway because they were dangerous.
The Vestry also worked out a deal whereby the con-
tractor would use a corner of our property by the
Barn, and in return, the parking lot and driveway by
St. Andrew’s House would get repaved; another task
which we faced. We have given the contractor per-
mission to use the east-most end of the parking lot as
a place where the port-a-potty could be situated. It
will be a little inconvenient, a little messy. It’s going
to take a little longer than anyone thought (the work
concludes next March). But in the long run, the bene-
fits to the church are great, and we are being good
neighbors to the Borough by allowing the use of our
property.
Trees have been a large conversation with the prop-
erty committee since, back in July, a large chunk of a
Buttonwood Trees in the parking lot fell. Our prop-
erty committee has identified 15 or 16 trees which
will need to be severely pruned or cut down because
they are a hazard. During the fall the Property Com-
mittee and Vestry will have a conversation about this
and other emergent situations on our property.
No doubt you also have seen that the work on the
steps at the east end of the Parish House has begun.
As I write there is a large hole beside the back door,
and the remnants of a giant tree have been excavated.
Soon gravel and stone will be put down for founda-
tions for a new retaining wall and new steps from the
doorway down to the lower level of the Parish House.
This was a fairly expensive project which the Vestry
funded by using funds in a savings account which we
have. The expense of living in our buildings is ex-
traordinary.
Sunday, September 9th is the first Sunday of our new
Program year. Remember that we begin a new Sun-
day morning schedule that day: 7:45 for the first ser-
vice, 9:00 for Church School/Parish Forum and then
10:15 for the Principle Liturgy. The Forum on Sept
9th will include a discussion of our new curriculum for
children and youth, and the plan for the Parish Forum
for the Fall and early winter.
This September marks the beginning of my 14th year
as Rector of St. Andrew’s. My tenure as rector is
longer than any previous Rector. I am amazed at the
time that has flown past, and the things we have done
together. And I keep thinking that the very best is
still before us.
God is Good.

5 THE CHRONICLE - JULY/AUGUST 2012
This fall many new things will be happening with Christian Formation (CF) here at St. An-drew's! First, the service times are changing up: the 7:45 service will be the same format and the same time. Christian Formation for all ages will be from 9am to 10am; this time includes coffee hour and adult Christian formation as well as for kids. At 10:15 will be the old 9:15 service with music and the choirs. Even though times have changed, the two services and CF will occupy the same time frame.
The next change is to how we do CF for kids and youth. Ages 3-2nd grade will still have the same Godly Play format, but the classes will be split into two: one for ages 3-Kindergarten and another for first and
second grades. Those classes will still meet upstairs in the rectory. Moreover, the third through fifth grade will be a Godly Play class for older kids. The stories will build on the ones they knew from the younger GP class and the reflection/wondering time will be different to accommodate the needs of the older children. This class will also still meet in the rectory. In addition, the middle school (6th-8th grades) will begin a new program called Rite 13. It is a combination of Christian Formation, youth group, and confirmation class. It is a two year program that culminates in a rite, hence the name, of passage and confirmation with the
Bishop. On Sunday morn-ings this class will meet in St. Andrew's House and there will be 2-3 times a month when they will meet at a different time or day. Finally, CF for
adults is changing too! Thanks to our Parish Fo-rum Committee Susan Korman, Eric Laird, Kevin Delaney, Marcie White, Sabrina Profitt, and Tim Johnson who organized and brain-stormed a varied list of programs this year! In addition there will be three intergenerational CF programs; one in each season! Join us on Sunday, September 9th at 9am for a more in depth presentation on all of these upcoming changes and then stay after the 10:15 service for our annual Kick-Off Cook-out and Picnic!!!!! -Laura Evans and Sarah Sensenig, Co-chairs

S even parishioners of St. Andrews
Episcopal Church spent time this past hot summer helping to build a Habitat for Human-ity home in Bristol Township. That home at 5925 Watson Drive was built by Mark Baldwin, Virginia Hamby, Ann Holland, Porter Hibbitts, Tom Maddock, John Poole and Doug Riblet, along with volunteers from about 25 other organizations. The St. Andrews’ workers helped to fabri-cate and install the roof, helped build its portico, installed drywall on the house’s ceilings and
painted the trim and the doors. This is the second home in two years built in Bristol Township by the Yardley church members. The first was in 2010 Habitat for Humanity in Bucks County is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian organiza-tion serving low-income families in the county. It has been in Bucks County for 22 years and has built and sold 87 homes during that time, according to a
Habitat for Humanity spokes-person.

Become a Lay Reader at
St. Andrew’s On Saturday morning, October 13th, at
10:00 a.m. there will be a preparation session in our Church for young people who would like to become Lay Readers. Those in the Rite 13 Program and/or pre-paring for Confirmation are invited to attend along with any others who would like to participate in this Liturgical Ministry. Everyone will have an opportunity to practice read and to learn about the Prayers of the People. Adults are welcome too! Speaking in front of a group that is sympathetic and supportive helps prepare young Readers to make public pres-entations later in life. Reading in Church is also an ongoing opportunity to become familiar with the Hebrew Scriptures, the Psalms, and the Letters of St. Paul that are part of our Lit-urgy. I encourage all interested young people to join us on October 20th. In the meantime, you can contact me at [email protected] with any questions. Lois Arnold
8 THE CHRONICLE - JULY/AUGUST 2012
Your Ways Are Not My Ways
“Y our ways are not my ways saith the
Lord.” (Isaiah 55:8). Religiously
speaking, we run into trouble when we
conflate God’s will with our will and proclaim with certainty
that our faith is superior to another’s faith. Remember the
Crusades and the Inquisition? The Lord requires us to “do
justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our
God.” (Micah 6:8). Walking humbly with our God means
accepting our place in this mysterious universe.
Your ways are not my ways saith the polls. Politi-
cally speaking, the people of our country are split down the
middle, with common ground and open minds disappearing
fast and citizens turning into partisans. How can we love our
neighbors, never mind our enemies, when so few of us listen
to people with different political perspectives and so many of
us condemn people on “the other side” as uninformed, idi-
otic, or evil? Walking humbly with our neighbors mean
accepting our neighbors’ place in a messy democratic proc-
ess.
You ways are not my ways saith St. Paul. “I do not
understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but
I do the very thing I hate. . . .Wretched man that I
am!” (Romans 7;15, 24). Personally speaking, I often feel
the same way as St. Paul, bedeviled by the gap between my
intentions and my actions and certain only of my uncertainty.
Walking humbly with ourselves means accepting our place
in our own internally inconsistent beings.
We yearn to reason our way to harmony with God,
our neighbor, and ourselves, preferably by demonstrating
beyond cavil that our own views are RIGHT. But that day
will never come.
I recommend three books showing us the error of our
self-righteous ways: Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kah-
neman; Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error by
Kathryn Schulz; and The Righteous Mind: Why Good Peo-
ple Are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt.
Our conclusions are usually produced by our instincts, emo-
tions and biases (fast thinking), rather than through our logi-
cal analysis (slow thinking). We deploy the gift of reason
not to figure out what we should believe, but to justify what
we already believe, and we will seek fig leafs of evidence to
confirm our views while spurning bushels of contrary evi-
dence. These books mercilessly prove this common point
with studies, statistics, graphs and charts galore, but also
with grace and good humor.
Viewed from a paradoxical perspective, the bad
news about our human fallibility is also good news. “The
truth shall set us free” (John 8:32). A liberating truth in all
three books as well as the Bible is that we all mess up all the
time, no matter how well-intentioned or smart we think we
are. Recognizing that reality enables us to be easier with
ourselves, our neighbors, our enemies, and even with our
God, who is responsible for such crazy creatures as human
beings in the first place. Schulz says:
Embracing our fallibility not only lessens our likeli-
hood of erring, but also helps us think more crea-
tively, treat each other more thoughtfully, and con-
struct freer and fairer societies . . . .I encourage us to
see error as a gift in itself -- a rich and irreplaceable
source of humor, art, illumination, individuality, and
change. This book opened with the pleasure of be-
ing right, but it will conclude with the more compli-
cated, more interesting, and ultimately more revela-
tory pleasure of being wrong (p. 24)
The wrongs of my first 60 years tell me she’s right.
Your ways are not my ways. Thanks be to God!
- Bob Anderson

STANDING NOTICES
Weddings
Weddings at St. Andrew’s Church will
be signified no earlier than 60 days prior
to the wedding date. All weddings in the
church will be governed by the Canons
of the Diocese of Pennsylvania and the
Book of Common Prayer. No weddings
will be signified during Lent. Before
scheduling a wedding it is imperative to
consult with Fr. Hamby.
Funerals The death of a child of God is a tender
event. Members of the church are urged
to call one of the clergy in the church as
soon as possible when death has come, in
order that they may bring the comfort of
our faith, and the presence of the church
family. It is appropriate for the funeral
of a Christian to take place in the church.
Baptisms
The sacrament of Holy Baptism is
celebrated according to the canons of the
church and the rubrics of the Book of
Common Prayer. Baptisms are part of
the public worship of the church, and
celebrated during one of the principle
Sunday liturgies. It is expected that
persons who are Baptized at St. Andrew's
Church will answer affirmatively the
questions asked in the baptismal
covenant, particularly concerning their
participation in the life and ministry of
this parish. Baptism is celebrated five
times each year as follows:
The Baptism of our Lord:
January 13, 2013
The Great Vigil and Easter:
March 30 & 31, 2013
Pentecost: May 19, 2013
All Saints Day: November 4, 2012
Before Baptism is celebrated there is
instruction of parents and Godparents
(sponsors). If you wish to be baptized, or
for your child to be baptized, please
speak with Fr. Hamby.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation
The sacrament of Reconciliation
(confession) is celebrated upon request to
Fr. Hamby and as announced during
Lent.
