HERALD StaffThe time-honored events of the annual Sierra
County Fair will get underway Oct. 5, 6, 7 and 8. This year, activity surrounding the Annual Sierra County Fair will begin Tuesday morning, Oct. 3, when the building will open for booth
It’s Sierra County Fair Time!construction. This year activities will get underway on
Wednesday, Oct. 4 with the halter and in hand classes of the horse show. The horse show is being split into two sections. The Wednesday segment and then Sunday, Oct. 9, the second
portion with performance, ranch horse and speed events. Both segments will be held in the city arena. As the fair proceeds, youth exhibits vary widely
from arts and crafts that clubs can complete in an afternoon to yearlong projects like raising, taming and training a 1,250-pound market steer. Most of the indoor home science projects are shorter projects, but some can take months to complete, like growing a pumpkin or designing and sewing an apron. 4-H and FFA kids will typically purchase their baby hogs, sheep and goats starting in April and care for them mornings, days and all hours of the night for five

FAIRContinued from Page C2to six months.Thursday, Oct. 5 will feature the Breeding and
Pygmy goat show, rabbit/cavy shows.Friday, Oct. 6 will be the county-bred barrow,
market swine and breeding gilt, county bred goat, market meat goat show, pee wee chicken scramble and poultry show, followed by the breeding beef, county bred steer and market steer show and showmanship.Saturday, Oct. 7, the Fair will feature County
Bred Lamb, market lamb and breeding sheep show, senior round robin showmanship, dog show, and rabbit showmanship contest. The labor of their hard work will be shown off
throughout the multi-day event. There are several dozens of classes in which
youth and adults can compete. Some of the more popular categories include photography, quilting, art, crafts, home-science, baking, large animals and plenty of small animals as well. Regardless of the project, youth are challenged to perfect their skills and put in long hours working with their animals.
Youth under the age of nine years are considered Clover Buds and generally can do anything older 4-H members can, except participate in the Livestock Auction. There are approximately nine clubs with more than 100 youth in Sierra County. The projected cost to put on this popular
event is hard to calculate in dollar and cents. For the most part, the fair is made possible by amazing donors, sponsors and a small army of volunteers.Highlight to the county fair is the Junior
Livestock Sale, held Saturday evening at 7:30 - where the champions sell their animals to the highest bidder. The Junior Livestock Sale raises close to
$100,000 each year to help encourage youth to participate in animal projects and grow as responsible, hard working members of the community. The support in itself is testament to the power
of these projects and positive impact they make in lives of those willing to put in the time. The annual Sierra County Pickup Party raises
about $10,000 annually, which goes towards paying judging, facility upkeep, ribbons and other non-sponsored items. The grounds are maintained and managed by

FAIRContinued from Page C3the volunteer-comprised Sierra County Fair Board, and the actual property and buildings belong to Sierra County. Without the support of the county, it would be very difficult to make the fair happen. The county fair is something the entire county
can take pride in. After all, agriculture is all around us every day – from the foods we eat to the clothing we wear. The skills learned by the youth of Sierra County will be impressed upon them for a lifetime.A full schedule for the Sierra County Fair
is available elsewhere in this edition of the Chaparral Guide.
***
The first Sierra County Fair was held in the auditorium of the Arrey School in 1940 and proved to be the beginning of one of the best county fairs in the state. In 1948, the site for the fair was moved to Hot
Springs, later TorC, and held in the auditorium of the school on 4th Street. In 1948 the Sierra County Fair Association
was formed and in 1950 they moved the fair to the community center building on Foch Street. Portable stalls were built to be used by the schools, clubs and businesses for displays. Some of them were free and some of them were sold for $25. Tables were also built to display the produce, canning, sewing, crafts and other exhibits. The indoor displays in the fair were growing but the livestock and poultry exhibits were very few as there was no place to show them.In 1959 an 80’x100’ exhibition building and
restrooms were built. The building was steel frame covered with metal and had a concrete floor. These were built with money from the county bond issue. In 1961 a livestock building 80’x100’ was built
with money borrowed by the Fair Association from Bob and Mary Reid, prominent Hillsboro ranchers. With the livestock building and under the very
capable leadership of Allan Beck, county agent, the livestock and poultry exhibits shown by the youth of the FFA and 4-H clubs and adult exhibitors grew by leaps and bounds making it necessary over the years to add 24’x100’ to the north side of the building to show sheep, goats and swine. A 12’x100’ extension was added on the south side of the building to show calves. The next building project was the kitchen and
dining area added to the exhibition building. It was built with money borrowed from Bob and Mary Reid. In the mid sixties a sales pavilion was built with money donated to the Kenneth Black memorial fund and landscaping of the grounds was also done at this time with money donated by the Sierra Soil and Water Conservation District.A quanset hut was given by the College at
Las Cruces and was brought to the fair grounds and put on a concrete foundation and is used to exhibit poultry and rabbits. All of the buildings are built on a twelve-acre
tract of land deeded free to Sierra County by BLM.All of the buildings and equipment appraised at
$250,000 in 1978 and are free of debt and with the exception of the indoor exhibit building, built with money donated or made by the Sierra County Fair Association by various means. The latest building to be added to the fair
grounds was the Sierra County Events Center, which was named the Albert Lyon Events Center. Lyon was a retired NMSU Cooperative Extension Service agent whose volunteer efforts on behalf of youth and tourism locally endeared him to the community at large.

The Scenic GilaVisitors to Sierra County have the opportunity
to take a tour of the scenic and beautiful Black Range, located in the Gila National Forest approximately 47 miles west of Truth or Consequences. To reach the mountains from Truth or

The Black RangeLocated on the eastern edge of the Gila National
Forest, the Black Range Mountains stand as a prominent land feature with high, rugged mountains, deep canyons, rincons (narrow valleys), scenic view points, and grassland areas.Astride the Range’s crest, the Aldo Leopold
Wilderness offers solitude as well as challenging wilderness trips. In addition, the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail runs south along the ridge line of Reed’s Peak before heading west along the Divide. For scenic drives upon paved roads, State
Highway 90 from San Lorenzo to Truth or Consequences, and highways 52 and 59 between Beaverhead and Winston pass through areas which are extremely green and offer a profusion of wildflowers. And take the time to visit the Emory Pass Scenic Vista; the view is breathtaking! For picnics and overnight camping, developed
campsites are available at the Iron Creek and Kingston campgrounds. At Iron Creek Campground in particular, visitors are treated to the added bonus of being entertained by the area’s many chipmunks.Primitive camp sites amidst beautiful scenery

From its origins in the mid 1980s as a backyard party hosted in a garlic shed, Pickamania has evolved into a festival celebrating the love of acoustic music of all genres. The event went mainstream in 2008 when the Mimbres Region Arts Council adopted the name and created its own awesome Pickamania festival in a downtown park in Silver City, with professional bands from across the country. This year the Black Range Lodge in Kingston,
NM, will host the event at their new outdoor Pavilion, as the culmination of their summer Starlight Concert Series, Sept. 22, 23 and 24. Reviving the home-grown spirit of the original
party, Pickamania 2017 will feature a talented line-up of New Mexico musicians, with a few from Arizona and Colorado. Headliners Saturday night will be flat-picking guitar champion Peter McLaughlin from Arizona and fiddle/mandolin player Chris Brashear, who offer an original blend of southwestern bluegrass music. Preceding them on Saturday are Chris Sanders and Anne Luna from the Hard Road Trio, joined by KC Groves (founder of the legendary bluegrass band “Uncle Earl”), and multi-instrumental wizard Ezra Bussmann, son of Pickamania founder Bill Bussmann. The weekend will begin Friday from 7 – 10
p.m. with a country flavor, featuring regional
Pickamania Lives on in Kingstonmusicians Mackie Redd & Kathy Reed, and the bluegrass band Sawmill Canyon. Saturday’s events are scheduled from 3 – 10 p.m., and Sunday morning music will go from 11a.m. to 3 p.m., starting with Desert Milk from TorC, ESP from Silver City, and culminate with two inspirational gospel groups. Pickamania originator Bill Bussmann will honor
the event as Master of Ceremonies, introducing the bands and injecting his special sense of humor into the proceedings. An accomplished luthier (see OldWaveMandolins.com) and stand-up bass player, back in 1985 Bill and his wife Susie invited their many friends to enjoy a weekend of home-grown bluegrass and folk musicians, with party-goers camping on their land near Caballo and grazing from a groaning table of hot-dish pot-luck. Their neighborhood party evolved into an event of epic word-of-mouth, and after seven years Pickamania outgrew their modest acreage. The Bussmanns reluctantly called it quits. More than a decade later, with the Bussmanns’
blessing, the event was reborn as an outdoor festival in Silver City, lasting until the MRAC director and key organizer Faye McCalmont moved on to a job with WNMU in 2016. “It’s a testament to how much fun people had two decades ago that they kept the name Pickamania,” said Bussmann. “Musicians get tired of being
ignored at bars, but they love a respectful crowd and getting called back repeatedly by standing ovations. And that still happens in Silver City.”Pickamania 2017 has returned to the east
