JFK Hearse: Cadillac That Carried Kennedy's Body after Assassination Auctioned

The Miller-Meteor Cadillac hearse that carriedformer U.S. President John F. Kennedy's cas-ket after he was assassinated in 1963 was auc-tioned at a Scottsdale, Arizona auction thisweekend for $160,000.

Stephen Tebo, a real estate developer fromColorado, bought the hearse that carried theformer President, along with his wife Jacque-line Kennedy, from a Dallas hospital to the air-port.

Tebo, who purchased the car from the auctioncompany Barrett-Jackson, will keep the vehicleas part of his extensive rare vehicle collection, featuring over 400 automobiles including a cus-tom Rolls-Royce limousine once owned byJohn Lennon.

"A Cadillac hearse like this would ordinarily beworth about $40,000 if not for its connection tothe Kennedy assassination," said McKeel

Hagerty, President of the collector car insur-ance company, Hagerty Insurance.

According to Daily Mail reports, it was a DonMcElroy, from the O'Neal Funeral Home in Dal-

las, who received a call from the Secret Serviceto ready a casket and hearse and bring it to thePark Memorial Hospital in the city.

McElroy reportedly helped move the Presi-dent's body into the car and pushed down therear seat in order to allow Jacqueline Kennedyto sit close to her husband. Secret Serviceagents then drove the hearse to the airport andleft it there after they boarded the plane toWashington.

The funeral home kept the hearse till the late1960s, when it was sold to a collector who, decades later, sold it to it a second owner whothen put it up for auction at the Barrett-Jacksonevent.

First drawing of Bell''s telephone systemgoes up for auctionLondon, An eight-page letter pennedin 1878 by Scottish-born inventor

Alexander Graham Bell, containing arare picture of his first telephone sys-tem, is up for auction.

The missive, beingsold by New Hamp-shire-based RR Auc-tion, was written byBell to his father in1878 after a "light-ning accident" threat-ened the integrity ofhis fledging inven-

    tion, the ''Daily Mail''reported.

The letter is high-lighted by a one-of-a-kind sketch of twoconnected tele-phones, with in-depthinstructions to hisfamily on a neces-sary safety precau-tion -- one that could possibly save their

    lives.

Bell writes in the letter, postmarkedfrom Washington DC, on December 30,to his parents that he is "quite troubledby your account of the lightning acci-dent at Tutelo Heights.

The accident shows that the earth ter-minals of your telephone line are de-

fective for the current found a shorterpath to the ground through two of yourpoles than by theproper path". And hegoes on to draw a re-markable diagram --two telephones --showing the correctmechanical assem-blage to ensure properfunction and, aboveall, safety. Bell contin-ues: "As I do not know

your connections Ishall merely statewhat connections Ishould advise in orderto prevent a repetitionof the accident --which might havebeen more serioushad the poles notbeen struck and thusafforded a partial pas-

    sage to the earth."

Bell was a pioneer in the field oftelecommunications and inventor of the"electrical speech machine". He in-vented the telephone in 1876 with thehelp of his assistant Thomas A Watson.

During their getaway, the outlaws, leftbehind the two guns in Joplin, Missouri.

A policeman involved in the raid recov-ered both guns - and a camera whichcontained a series of black and whitesnaps. They believe these grainy, agedimages are proof that the guns once

lay in the deadly hands of therogue duo.

An unnamed officer handedthe weapons to a police col-league, and they have re-

    mained with the family eversince.

But the law enforcement offi-cer's great-grandson MarkLairmore decided to sell thelot to share their unique his-tory with the world.

Mark, from Springfield, Mis-souri, USA, said earlier thismonth: 'They were a gift from

    one policeman to another.

There is no doubt in mymind whatsoever that theseguns belonged to Bonnieand Clyde.

'They bragged to the offi-cer about having stolentheir Tommy gun inOhio, and the serialnumber on my gun isthe same as one thatwas once listed as

'It was documented in the local paper -that to me is huge and a massive sliceof history is held in these guns.' He de-cided to sell the guns after the death ofhis father, who passed them down tohim. Mark added: 'They have been inthe Springfield Police Museum since1973.'I feel it's time for someone withan appreciation of antique guns andthe history behind them owns them andcares for them.'

Robert Mayo, who auctioned theweapons at Mayo Auction and Realty,in Kansas City, said: 'These guns arehighly collectible and would draw at-tention in any sale by their own historyand merit.'

World's Largest Emerald Up for Auction

A 57,000-carat emerald, which is saidto be the world's largest, will be soldon January 28 at Western Star Auc-tions in British Columbia, Canada. Thegiant jewel weighs 11.5 kilograms andis around 12 inches long.

Check out the world's most expensivecolored diamonds

On Monday, the gem was appraised at$1.15 million since it is only a rough cutstone. But Western Star Auctions

owner Mike Odenbach told Huff PostCanada he thinks it could fetch moreat auction. "It's not unusual for gem-stones to sell a lot higher than their ap-praised value, just depending on whowants to possess the largest emeraldin the world," he said. Odenbach de-scribed the dark green emerald as"nothing short of spectacular."

See which celebs wore emerald jew-els to the Golden Globes

The emerald was discovered in Braziland cut in India. Rare gem dealerRegan Reany of Calgary got an emailabout the stone and thought it was toogood to be true. But the emerald is, infact, very real and heading to Kelowna,

British Columbia with armed security. The auction house has ensured thejewel will be heavily guarded until theauction later this month. "The gem-stone is named 'Teodora' and roughtranslation is 'God's Gift,'" Odenbachtold Huff Post. "To me we're beinggiven an opportunity to expose our-selves internationally as an auctioncompany that can handle items likethis. You know, it really does feel like agift."

Can't afford the $1.15 million askingprice? Another ultra-expensive, but farsmaller emerald is missing in HongKong. The Daily Mail reports thatSwiss jeweler Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele took off her 16 carat emer-ald and diamond ring while washingher hands in the bathroom of the FourSeasons Hotel's Harbour View ball-room. Once she realized her error andran back seven minutes later the ringwas gone. The missing ring is valued

at over $1.5 million and the owner isoffering a $62,000 reward.

Perhaps the world's largest emeraldisn't worth quite as much, but at leastyou'll never lose it!
