EDITORIALDear students, dear friends,

In keeping with this digital age of learning, Alliance française is pleased to present a fantastic educational resource for French language and culture. Used all over the world, Culturethèque is a multimedia French E-library and gateway to a series of magazines, e-books, movies, music, tutorials and games. Now it is available in Tanzania, and Alliance française members can access this content at no cost.

Are borders immovable? We will grapple with this provocative question at a debate featuring a panel of experts organised by the French Embassy. The debate, which includes a Q&A session with the audience, will look at issues such as refugees and separation walls.

The September-October program will also have plenty to offer in the arts. Works by Tanzanian photographer Nicholas Calvin will be featured in an exhibition entitled “Context, Gravity, Expressions”, a collaboration with Aurélie Lierman and Anoek De Smet. For some international francophone flavor, the band Grèn Sémé brings us a style they call “evolutive maloya”, from the island of La Réunion. In the area of dance, Muda Africa students Samwel Japhet and Emanuel Elias will perform a contemporary piece called “Juzi Jana na Leo”, they created during a performing arts residency in Nairobi.

With an eye to the future, the Staff and Board of Alliance française of Dar es Salaam ask you to join them in giving a warm welcome to the Alliance’s new Director, Frédéric Tiberti. We are excited to usher in this new chapter together and continue the work of promoting French language and cultural exchanges in Tanzania.

Directed by Bruno Podalydès (who helmed the “Montmartre” segment of the omnibus Paris, I Love You), Bancs Publics chronicles three intersecting stories in the city of Versailles: an office worker who hangs a banner reading “Lonely Man” beneath his window, the feuding families and couples in a busy town square, and the employees and customers of a local shop. This sprawling and droll exploration of the estrangement of modern life boasts a star-studded supporting cast that features a veritable who’s who of French cinema, including Olivier Gourmet, Emmanuelle Devos, Mathieu Amalric, Chiara Mastroianni, Hippolyte Girardot, Pierre Arditi, and the grande dame herself, Catherine Deneuve.

Nicholas Calvin (TZ) - visualAurelie Lierman (BE/RW) - sound“Context, Gravity, Expressions”

Alliance Française6.30pm

ENTRANCE FREE

This exhibition is an encounter between photographer Nicholas Calvin (TZ), radio producer, vocalist and composer Aurélie Lierman (BE/RW), and architect-scenographer, Anoek De Smet (BE/TZ). This will be their 1st common project. The exhibition is an exploration of visual, audio and spatial aspects of contemporary Tanzania, showing a palette ranging from extrovert to intimate experiences.

Nicholas Calvin M. is a freelance photographer based in Dar. Curiosity for photography in his teen years drew him in the local library, reading and learning about the subject and later turned into a real passion. Further inspiration comes from observing people in their daily life; their expression, the context they live and move in; the scene of their work, dwelling, and play.Aurélie Lierman is an independent radio producer, vocalist and composer. She works on the border of these practices, adding very often theatrical or cinematic elements to her compositions and radio pieces. She’s an internationally recognised artist and has just completed a tour in the U.S.

Anoek De Smet is an architect living and working In Dar es Salaam since 6 years and curated this exhibition.

ENTRANCE FREE

Muda Africa students, Samwel Japhet and Emanuel Elias, were selected for a performing arts residency and creative economy course at The GoDown Art Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. During this time, they created a new dance piece entitled 'Juzi, Jana na Leo' (The Day before yesterday, Yesterday and Today) which is a story that reflects on their own personal life awakenings. Muda Africa is a non-profit organisation which gives professional training in the fields of dance and music to Tanzanian youth. MUDA, short for Music and DAnce, means 'time' in Kiswahili. Time alludes to movement, rhythm and space but also to a modern urban Africa integrated with traditional knowledge and wisdom. Don't miss our upcoming dance festival from 2-8 November 2015!

Jagwa Music(Tanzania)

Alliance Française7.00pm

ENTRANCE FREE

Jagwa Music emerged in 1992 as a spin-off from an earlier group playing chakacha (locally a mixture of the bite & tunes of Mombasa taarab songs with Zaramo rhythmic and kinetic ideas) at weddings and other family celebrations. Their name Jagwa (from the French fighter plane) came up in opposition to their rivals which had named themselves Scud, all terminology coming down right from the first Gulf War. Above all, these are the two kinanda (Casio) players Daliki and Diploma, intensifying the style with their minimalist end-of-day feedback and distortion deluges, Mazinge’s and TP’s powerful and always shifting drumming patterns; and, more recently with current front man and main attraction Jackie joining. The latter is an energetic singer and performer, belting out songs and commentaries on day-to-day street life with never-ending vigor.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zvr2fBB4i0

The King is in love with a charming, modest shepherdess whom he wants to marry. But she loves a little chimneysweep. The shepherdess and the chimneysweep flee to escape the King, and, taking refuge at the summit of the palace’s highest tower, save a small careless bird, taken in one of the tyrant’s traps. The father bird, in return, promises to help them. The police discover the fugitives’ trail. A wild pursuit ensues. Flying machines piloted by mustached policemen, mysterious creatures who spy on the city, motorized tritons and the King on his electric floating throne, or on his gigantic robot, chase them and, finally, capture them. The bird and the chimneysweep, separated from the shepherdess, are put to work in the big royal workshops, then thrown, for lack of discipline, into the lions’ pit.

Paul Ndunguru is a painter, illustrator and a sculptor. He holds a diploma of art from Bagamoyo college of Art in Tanzania. He had several exhibitions and taught in and outside the country for the past 24 years. Paul is the founder and the executive Director of Alama art and media production Ltd since 2003, the country’s first Art and media production. Paul’s idea of this exhibition comes from the importance of people to have the right to get information and to communicate freely. Yet there are certain things that are not allowed to be questioned, such as the elders or the leaders make the decisions and the rest had to follow.

Paul uses symbols that carry the theme of creating dialogue and platforms of communication in the social and justice environment via symbolic representations.
