Your WIN modem is a PCI bus internal modem withPlug-and-Play (PnP) feature. PnP works only underWindows 98/ME/2000 and Windows XP. PnP feature

allows you to install your modem without you knowingand setting up Com Port address and IRQ numbers.

    System Requirements.

You must have an Pentium, or compatible PC with atleast Pentium 233 MHz speed. You also needWindows 98, ME, XP, NT 4.0 or 2000. If you do nothave any one of these, do not use this modem card,

instead use our A series hardware controller modem.

    Features and benefits.

PCI bus interface allows data to move frommodem to PC as fast as PCI bus; thuseliminating the constraint of the slow UARTserial port.

PnP feature provides one step and easyinstallation.

Both ITU-T V.92 and V.90 56K protocol enabledin driver so the modem can connect with eitherstandard without upgrading or changing driver.

In data mode, download and receive data at upto 56K bps with compatible ISP.

Full feature data, fax and voice provide powerful,all-inclusive functions for home and office.

Runs under Windows 98/ME/2000/XP withPentium 233 or faster computer.

    Microsoft s PC 2001 compliant.

II. Connecting Phone Lines to Your modem.

Your fax modem has two modular telephone jackson the back of the board. One is marked LINESYMBOL or WALL SYMBOL and the othermarked PHONE SYMBOL . If your wall outline isnot a modular type, you can purchase aninexpensive converter at most electronics stores.

    7

Your modem must be connected to phone outline

that has an RJ11 jack. RJ11 line is sometimes calleda single line phone. If you use a PBX or businessphone system, make sure the extension line is anRJ11 outline.

    1. Plug one end of the phone cord that came withthe modem into the modem jack marked LINESYMBOL or WALL SYMBOL .

    2. Plug the other end of the same phone cord intothe wall jack. Make sure you do not plug thephone cord into the modem jack marked PHONE SYMBOL . The PHONE SYMBOL jack is for you to plug an ordinary telephone set.

    Connecting your phone lines.

You can also connect a telephone set to your

modem, enabling you to use the phone when themodem is not in used. The phone set can be used inyour voice mail application software. (Refer to yoursoftware manual). Simply connect the phone cordfrom your phone set to the jack in the back of themodem that is labeled PHONE SYMBOL .

NOTE: If you plug the phone cord into the wrong

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Basic Modem Questions.

    1. How does 56K work? What is V.90?

56K bps speed can be achieved only whendownloading or receiving data from an ISP (InternetService Provider).

The revolutionary breakthrough of 56 Kbps is madepossible by utilizing the digital telephone network inthe ISP location or corporate central sites. Thesespeeds cannot be achieved with modem-to-modemconnections. Because this technology bypasses theanalog-to-digital conversion in the ISP site, in thedownstream path, 56K protocol can use a larger

portion of the network bandwidth. Thus making thedownloading faster.

Before February 1998, there were two incompatible56K standards, namely, X2 and K56Flex. If an ISPimplements the X2, you cannot connect to 56K withK56flex (however, you can still connect to 33.6K).

After February 1998, the ITU-T committee hasendorsed a preliminary standard which will make X2and K56Flex compatible. The new standard is calledITU V.90 standard. Before you can use it, your ISPmust have implemented V.90 on their equipment.

    2. What is V.92 and V.44?

ITU-T recommendations V.92 and V.44 are the newinternational standards for analog modems. They improve

    11/14

    10

the features of the former standards V.90 and V.42biswith simple yet powerful changes designed to enhancethe inter-net experience. The new features of V.92 are as

    follows:

    - Fast connect, which decreases start-up times onrecognized connections.

    - Modem on hold, which allows the user to place themodem on hold when an incoming call is identified.

    - PCM upstream, which increases the upstreamtransmission rate up to 48 kbits/s under the best lineconditions.

V.44 updates the older compression standard V.42bis.V.42bis was created ten years ago and predates theWorld Wide Web. V.44 addresses the content changesfrom the last ten years and can provide significantlyincreased throughput.

As the central-site architecture begins to move towardsV.92, most of the existing infrastructure only supportsV.90 equipment. This modem supports both V.92 andV.90 with a fallback to V.34 for connections where aV.92 or V.90 connection is not negotiated.

    3. How do I use the voice features?

The voice feature is actually a digital voicemessaging system. Like your old tape answeringmachine, your voice modem answers a phone call, plays greeting, and records caller s voice mail justlike an answering machine. However, your voicemodem can do more. All voice message, greetingsand playbacks are converted into digital files. Thesefiles can be played using your sound card. You canalso take your sound card WAV files and play it to

the modem or use it as a message. You can also

    11

retrieve you messages from a touch tone phoneoutside.

Powerful features include pager notification, fax ondemand are available in software such as Bitware,QuickLink, Supervoice and Winfax. The modem iscompatible with all the popular voice fax software.

    4. What is WIN modem?

WIN modem means that modems can be used only

under Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME,Windows NT4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XPoperation system.

    5. I connected to AOL at 57,600 bps, but it is veryslow when downloading files or getting my e-mail, why?

Your modem can only go as fast as the other sidecan send data. AOL has 12 million users. Imagine ifhalf of the 12 million users get on line. Try AOLduring off peak hours and see the difference.

    Installation and Setup Questions.

    1. I use Win 3.1 or DOS, what should I do?

This modem is for Pentium 233 MHz or higher withWindows 98/2000/ME and Windows XP only. If youuse Win3.1 or DOS, you need the hardwarecontroller modem.

    2. After I install everything and tries to dial, my

software says No Dial Tone , why?

  • 8/3/2019 Agere V92

    13/14

    12

    Check the following things:

    (a) The phone cord from the wall jack (telephone

company) is plugged into the jack label WALLor LINE in the modem.

    (b) Plug a regular phone into the Phone jack andlift it up to hear a dial tone.

    (c) If you have a voice mail feature from your phonecompany (answering machine service), makesure the message waiting tone is clear. In other

words, you should not hear the fast tone. Clearyour message waiting.

    3. After I got connected, different software willreport different connection speeds. Or whydifferent modem report different speeds?

There are two speeds reported by the modem and

your software. The DTE speed is the transmissionspeed from your modem to your PC. The LineSpeed or the Connected at xxxxxx speed reportedby the modem is the carrier speed or the actualspeed the modem will transmit data through thephone line to the other end. Because your modemhas data compression feature, it is actually sendingmore data to your PC after it decompresses the datafrom the other end.

Your software and modem should report the LineSpeed rather than the DTE speed. Because of linenoise conditions, your modem may connect atslower speed for each call. The speed will also dropif the phone line get noisy after you are connected.
