FUNCTIONNING PRINCIPLE OTEC’s ADVANTAGES
OTEC uses the temperature difference between cooler deep (1000m, 5°C) and warmer shallow tropical water (25°C) to
run a heat engine and produce useful work.
With this temperature delta, a thermodynamical cycle (Rankine cycle)
produces useful work in the form of electricity
Stable and non intermittent electrical production ; no uncertainties about the
resource (access, availability, costs)
Decarbonated-generated

Potential co-products :
• Drinkable water production
• Aquaculture
• Use of nutrient-rich water
Optimal performance conditions : Temperature Delta = 20°C, between shallow and deep water

1- SOLVING THE KEY TECHNOLOGICAL PROBLEMS
• Installation of an onshore prototype in Reunion island in 2011, supported by the government’s stimulus plan (validation of the performances since 2011)
• End of development (2014) of the Soft Giant River, to pump deep water
• Synergy with DCNS’s success in the AMI : « Marine Renewable Energies : Technological parts & demonstrators » of the ADEME (2013), MARLIN project : deep water sunction pipe and and heat exchangers
2- WINNER OF THE NER 300 PROGRAM
• NEMO, project deposited by France in July 2013, within the fram of the Call for Tender NER 300
• Winner of the program in July 2014 (after a one-year audit of EIB) – Awarded subsidy by the European Union : 72.3 M€
• Cost of the project < 300 M€ - 90 GWh generated every year. Feed in tariff : 450 €/MWh
The 4 stages of NEMO
4 –FIRST COMMERCIAL OUTLET WITH GRID PARITY
• Offshore OTEC in Indonesia or Philippines: 16 MW (10 MW injected on the network)
• On shore OTEC in Fiji or Maldives Islands: 5 MW (3,5 MW injected on the network)
• Middle-term objective: generate power at a tariff between 250 and 300 €/MWh in insular areas
3 – A CONTROLLED DEVELOPMENT
• Technical studies achieved (environmental study, risk study, …)
• Administrative authorisation requests deposited with the State’s services in Martinique – End of development expected for December 2015
• Current funding period, construction scheduled for 2017, commissioning in summer 2019

A technology dedicated to isolated and densely populated areas, representing a 25 G€ market by 2030
• > 100 countries fulfil the thermal potential
requirements
• 72 preferred areas (thermal potential and optimal distance off the shores)
• 55 areas with no fossil alternatives
• 25-30 MW floating power plants
• Objectives for these energy production costs lower than fossil energy costs on these territories
• Equatorial insular areas represent a large export market
• A basic production that can be easily integrated into the network and thus support it
