Page 2: ALL ALIGNED TOWARDS HKIA’S FUTURE...Kong International Airport (HKIA) saw passenger volume increase to 57.2 million and air traffic movements to 355,000, representing growth of 4.1%

We have ended the fiscal year with solid financial and operational results across the board. For the year ended March 2013, Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) saw passenger volume increase to 57.2 million and air traffic movements to 355,000, representing growth of 4.1% and 4.7% respectively. Cargo volume rose 2.9% to 4.04 million tonnes as HKIA remained the world’s busiest cargo airport for the third consecutive year.

On the financial side, we recorded a net profit of HK$5.6 billion which reflects an increase of 5.4% compared to the previous

year. Out of this amount, HK$4.4 billion will be paid as a dividend to our shareholder, the Hong Kong SAR Government. In total, the Airport Authority (AA) has returned HK$30.38 billion to the Government in repaid capital and dividends since 2003/04.

Healthy traffic growth once again indicated the necessity to expand the airport’s capacity to meet future demand. It particularly holds true when the traffic volumes are already ahead of forecasts outlined in the HKIA Master Plan 2030.

We are moving full steam ahead and continue to engage stakeholders regarding the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies for the planned three-runway system project. Recently, we have been sharing the latest status of the EIA studies at the second round of meetings with members of the Technical Briefing Groups and Community Liaison Groups. Both groups were formed to advise us on environmental issues related to the EIA. The former comprise professionals with technical expertise and interests in major environmental issues, while the latter involve community leaders in the five neighbouring districts of the airport.

We also continue to update senior executives and working-level colleagues of major business partners through the second CEO Forum and the 11th meeting of the “Users Working Group on Airport Infrastructure Planning and Development”. We have also continued to arrange airport visits for numerous secondary school and university students. Since we started the EIA process in May 2012, we have arranged around 350 visits, meetings and briefings with various stakeholders.

We plan to complete the EIA process by middle of next year, and will continue to engage stakeholders along the way. Our airport is built to serve the people of Hong Kong and as a bridge linking us with the rest of the world, which is why we spare no efforts in reaching out to as many stakeholders as possible. By doing so, we hope to be able to incorporate their views in this important planning phase for the further expansion of the airport.

ALL ALIGNED TOWARDS HKIA’S FUTURE

With the planning and preparation works for Hong Kong International Airport’s (HKIA) expansion into a three-runway system (3RS) underway at full steam, the Airport Authority (AA) continues to focus on ensuring the airport community, stakeholders and the public are abreast of the developments.

One such way the AA has pursued this commitment is through the CEO Forum, which was held for the second time. On 31 May, AA senior management provided an update to around 40 senior management executives of the airport community on the progress of the 3RS project.

In his welcome speech, AA CEO Stanley Hui set forth the agenda of the forum and an outline on the future steps to be undertaken throughout the 3RS project. AA Executive Director, Projects John Chai followed with a presentation that touched on the environmental issues covered in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies, the scheme designs of the major facilities and some key challenges met under the 3RS.

Following the forum, the AA hosted its second round of two Staff Townhall Meetings in June to provide some 1,000 staff with timely updates on various aspects of airport developments.

Meanwhile, the AA has been keeping stakeholders and community members updated on airport developments through different channels, including face-to-face engagement activities and the publication of a dedicated newsletter. Back in April, the AA invited the heads of corporate/public affairs of the airport community to participate in the first HKIA Communication Group meeting.

In other recent engagement activities, Chairmen and Vice Chairmen from Hong Kong’s 18 District Councils as well as the Owners’ Committee, and the School Heads Association of the airport’s neighbouring districts were invited for joining talks on HKIA to enhance their understanding of the airport operations and developments.

In addition, the second issue of the 3RS Bulletin was published and disseminated to the general public. The publication provides up-to-date information of the 3RS project, including progress on the EIA studies and stakeholder engagement activities.

HKIA broke new ground literally and figuratively by becoming the first operator of the Automated People Mover (APM) in Hong Kong when it opened its doors in 1998. Travelling swiftly at 62 kilometres per hour, the underground rail service conveniently transports over 12,000 passengers per hour per direction. The rail network now features two APM lines connecting Terminal 1, Terminal 2 (T2) and SkyPier, collectively spanning 3.8 kilometres inside the airport.

But do you know where the APMs take a breather? Since the airport’s inception, the APM depot has been located right below the T2 Coach Hall.

RAILWAY LINES LINK HONG KONG WITH THE WORLD 鐵路讓香港與世界接軌

HKIA never loses touch of downtown Hong Kong’s dynamic pulse, thanks to the opening of the Airport Railway comprising the Airport Express and the Tung Chung Line on 21 June 1998. The Airport Express introduced a fast connection between the airport and Hong Kong Island within 30 minutes, while the Tung Chung line opened up access to the then embryonic new town. The new lines have been playing a key role in helping HKIA to become one of the most convenient and accessible airports for passengers in the world.

On the busy National Day last year, the ticketing hall of Shekou Ferry Terminal was teeming with people when a pregnant woman who intended to take a ferry to Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) to catch her flight came to Vicky’s counter. At that time, she was already 29 weeks into her pregnancy and was told that she would not be able to get on board unless she could present the required medical proof certifying she was physically fit for flying. Without such documents, the woman burst into tears because she was desperate to fly to Australia to visit her husband who was admitted to the hospital.

Duty supervisor Ella comforted the mother-to-be and suggested that she obtain the medical certificate at a nearby hospital. Ella also listed the specific type of information required for the woman to help speed up the process, while another colleague, Lemon, assisted with her heavy luggage.

The woman then returned with the medical certificate but had already missed her flight. Normally, a passenger would have to personally request for a flight change but on this busy day, it would be more difficult to get on another flight. Vicky thought that the process of re-scheduling the flight would be exhausting for the woman, therefore she asked Ella to help liaise with the airline. Considering that a 10-hour flight to Australia would

be quite a difficult journey for a pregnant passenger, they even arranged an aisle seat to ensure the woman could have a more comfortable flight.

Thanks to the concerted efforts of the attentive Shekou Ferry Terminal team, the pregnant woman was able to safely and comfortably continue on her journey to reunite with her husband.

At the boarding gate where Holly was on duty, a passenger in the boarding queue suddenly vomited. Check-in Supervisor Patrick and Gate Supervisor Monica immediately came to help the lady, and found she was also suffering from incontinence.

Discerning that the woman was too ill to go to the toilet by herself, Holly offered her warm assistance to help the passenger remove her soiled clothes and clean them in the toilet. On the other hand, Patrick kept the passenger’s husband company and comforted him. The passenger was eventually transported to the hospital.

When the couple finally departed for home a few days later, Holly was again on duty and the couple repeatedly expressed their gratitude to her. Throughout the incident, the Jardine team displayed commendable professionalism in compassionately assisting passengers in need.

In the second part of the Customer Service Excellence Programme (CSEP) 2012/13 feature, we spotlight three teams and two Airport Authority (AA) staff who demonstrated their big hearts in providing exceptional service to passengers at HKIA.

A male customer made his way to a Relay shop with a cup of coffee but accidentally bumped into a female shopper and spilled the coffee all over their clothes. Cammy immediately offered to help the woman clean up in the toilet nearby while her colleagues Hugo, Katrina and Queenie provided assistance to the man at the shop. In 10 minutes’ time, attentive Cammy even helped the woman buy a new T-shirt according to her size and preference of colour.

After cleaning up the spilled coffee, the Relay team faced another challenge: the man who spilled his coffee left his mobile phone at the store for re-charging, but did not return. Katrina deduced that the man might have forgotten his phone. Recalling that the customer had purchased a travel guide of Vietnam, the team immediately checked the flight schedules to Vietnam and noted there was only one flight that would be departing in the next few hours. Cammy and Katrina went to the corresponding boarding gate without hesitation and returned the phone to its owner.

The Lagardère Services team demonstrated exceptionally outstanding customer service by swiftly attending to the female shopper and illustrated their smart reaction to locate the male customer to return his mobile phone on time.

Meanwhile, the passenger’s flight was rescheduled to the following morning, which allowed Winnie to re-visit the passenger and offer him a helping hand after her duty hours.

An elderly couple who intended to travel from Hong Kong to Los Angeles via Beijing for medical treatment unfortunately missed their flight. With worried faces, they approached an airline ticketing counter for assistance. After a prolonged discussion between the airline and the passengers, the situation remained unresolved. Noting the situation, Ben discerned that the elderly couple was having difficulties in explaining their predicament clearly to the airline. Showing his initiative, he stepped in and offered to facilitate the communication between the airline and the passengers. With Ben’s help, the couple’s flight was rescheduled successfully, while a staff was even specially assigned to them to offer assistance during check-in of their baggage.

With the aim to increase public knowledge towards engineering in Hong Kong, the AA sponsored the Engineering Week 2013 from 20 to 28 April, organised by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. The AA also supported the event by holding a visit to the airport, allowing the participants to learn about different airport facilities requiring the support of engineers, such as the Integrated Airport Centre, fixed ground power, Pre-conditioned Air Units and electric vehicle charging stations.

As a 24-hour business, HKIA never sleeps. However, one of the airport’s two runways takes a short break every night after supporting around 1,000 flight movements during the day. From 01:30, according to a schedule drawn up by the Civil Aviation Department, one of the two runways is closed down for 6.5 hours for maintenance and improvement works. After taking a nap, the runway will be “refreshed” to greet a new day of busy landings and take-offs.

DID YOU KNOW?

Inclement weather inevitably poses every airport great operational challenges. However, HKIA has been taking measures to ensure that it always runs well through the sun and rain.

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) estimates that around four to seven typhoons will affect Hong Kong this season. With over 1,000 flights estimated per day at HKIA during the summer schedule, even one typhoon can have major impact on the operations of the airport, including baggage delivery and aircraft parking.

In view of the forecast by the HKO, the AA is on hand with measures to tackle these issues. In the event of a typhoon that strands the airport operations, the Airport Emergency Centre may be activated to facilitate effective communication and coordination among AA senior management, the airlines, government departments and other concerned parties. The Passenger Care Team, formed by office workers of the AA, will stand by at the terminals to help take care of the affected passengers. The latest flight information will also be made available to the passengers through various channels, including our website, public announcement in the terminals, Flight Information Display System, mass media and mobile application.

SILVER ACCOLADE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS

The Airport Authority (AA) recently added the Silver Award – Public Organisations and Utilities under the Sectoral Awards of the 2012 Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (HKAEE) to its environmental credentials. The Sectoral Awards are presented to businesses and organisations in Hong Kong committed to environmental management. Hong Kong International Airport’s (HKIA) daily activities and environmental achievements were assessed on their compliance with HKAEE’s Eco-Business Model, which include factors such as Green Leadership, Programme and Performance, and Partner Synergy.

Led by the Environmental Campaign Committee and the Environmental Protection Department, the HKAEE has acknowledged the environmental initiatives of local companies across a spectrum of industries since 2008. This is the third time the AA has clinched award in HKAEE.

ENVIRONMENTAL HONOURS FOR BUSINESS PARTNER

HKIA’s business partners have always complemented our green strategies, and Select Service Partner’s (SSP) efforts were acknowledged at U Magazine’s U Green Awards 2012-13 and won the Outstanding

Environmental Contributions Award. Nominees of the Awards were judged according to their

environmental planning, green performance and long-term goals.

SSP has been resolute in its carbon reduction policies, cutting back on food wastage and using environmentally friendly utensils wherever possible. For instance, the placemats in its restaurants are printed on FSC-certified paper to minimise environmental impact. Used cooking oil is also collected to make biodiesel, producing over 600 kilograms of biodiesel from more than 780 litres of cooking oil in 2012.
