I gotanSMSfrommywifethetodayasIwasoutriding.Inthemessageshetoldmethatshewants to getanewcar.Idon’twanthertogetanewcar!Wedon’thaveenoughmoney.IwasbetweenjobsforawhileandIonlygot a new job last month. At my new job I only get $7 an hour.It’sterrible.Ireallyneedtogetmybosstogivemearaise.MywifethoughtthatIgot about$2000aweek,butifyoutimesmywageperhour($7)withtheamountofhoursIwork(40) you only get $280. That’s right. A measly $280 a week is all I get.Ihavenoideahowshegotthatinformation.Thisisn’tthefirsttimeshehasgottenherfactswrong,though.
Theotherday,myfriendsandIwereplayingcricketatthelocalfield,andDavidhittheball reallyhard.Bentriedtocatchit,buthewasunsuccessfulandtheballgothimrightintheface.Itwasprettyfunny.Myteamgot10runswhileDavidwasonthegroundholdinghisface.Myteamendedupwinningthematch.180-170.Those10runswegotreallymadeadifference. OnFriday,whenIwasatworkafewstrangethingshappened.Inormallyget the bus, but this timeIchosetogetthetrain.WhenIwasgetting onthetrainwesawthisguyontheplatformstealawoman’shandbag.Luckily,thereweresomepolicethereandtheywereabletoget the guybeforehegot away.Andtheoldladygotthehandbagback.
Thatmorningatworkwasprettynormal,thatis,untilmybosscamein.Whenmybosscameinhelookedreallyangry.HetoldmetogetMr.Tanakaonthephonerightaway,andIdidso.Hethenspentthenext2hoursyellingathiminhisofficeoverthephone.Itwasreallyloud.Iwonderwhathappened.Intheafternoonsomethingweirdhappenedtoo.IaskedmyassistanttogetmetheABCfile,andshegotangry–so,soangry.Itwasamazing.Shecompletelylostit!Itwasalittlescary,actually.Thatwasthethirdtimethismonththatshehaslosthercool,andasa result she gotintoquitealotoftrouble.Idon’tthinkshe’llgetfired,butshe’lldefinitelyget a warningfromHR. Inormallyfinishlate,buttodaysincemywifeisgettinghomeaftermeI’llneedtogetdinnertonight.IwonderwhatIshouldcook.Ihonestlydon’tfeellikecookingthough.IthinkI’lljustget takeout.

OnMonday,someonetookmygolfbagwhenIwenttothetoilet.Iprobablyshouldn’thaveleftitoutside.Thatreallywasmybad.Youjustcan’ttrustanyonethesedays.Mybadluckdidn’tstopthere.LaterthatafternoonasIwasleavingthegolfcourse,Itookanastyfallcomingdownthesteps.Ibangedmykneeupalittlebitandgrazedmyhands,butapartfromthatIwasOK.
OnTuesday,ItookmygirlfriendtothemoviesbecauseshewantedtoseethenewJamesBondmovie,andIdidtoo.Wenormallydrivetothemovietheater,butthistimewedecidedtotake the trainbecauseit’salittlecheaperandwedon’thavetowastetimefindingaparkingspot.Whenwewentuptotheticketcountertobuythetickets,Itriedtopaywithmycreditcard,buttomysurprisetheladystatedthattheynolongertakecreditcards.SoIjustpaidwithcash,eventhoughIdidn’treallywantto.
OnWednesday,itwastrashday,whichmeantIhadtotakeallthetrashoutside.Ihatetaking thetrashout.Itstinks!Itreallydoesn’ttakethatmucheffort.Istilldon’tlikeitthough.WhenIfinishedtakingoutthetrashmygirlfriendwascomplainingthattheremotefortheTVwasn’tworking.Itriedtochangeitsbatteries,butIwasn’tabletobecauseIdidn’thaveanyreplacements.TheremotetakesAAAbatteriesandIonlyhadAAbatteries.
OnThursday,atworkIhadtogiveabigpresentationtooneofournewclientswithmysupervisor.Iwassupposedtospeakfor20minutes,butafterIhadintroducedmyselfandtheproduct,mybossinterruptedrudelyandsaidI’lltakeitfromhere.Andthenheproceededtodotheentirepresentation.Attheendofthepresentationwhenhetoldtheclientthatthepricehadnowdoubled,theclientdidn’tlookhappy.Idon’tthinkhetook the news very well at all. I really can’ttakemyboss’sattitudeanymore.Healwaysdoesthis.Now,I’mtheonewhoisgoingtofindanewclient.Thiscouldtake ages.
OnFriday,Icamedownwithabadcoldandhadtoseethedoctor.Hetook my temperature then ranafewtests.Afterthatheprescribedmesomemedicineandinstructedmetotake three capsulesaday.Onceafterbreakfast,onceafterlunchandonceafterdinner.

BecauseIworkasaforeigncorrespondentI’vebeenlivingoverseasforages.Idon’tevenrememberwhenIfirstcametoJapan.It’sbeenalongtime,butJapanfeelslikehomenow.IhadalittlebitofcultureshockinitiallyafterIarrived,butnowIdon’treallyhaveanyproblems.
I’vegottenusedtothelanguage.IcanreadaJapanesenewspapernowandI’malsoprettygoodatspokenJapanese,eventhoughIstillhaven’tbeenabletomasterformalJapaneseyet.It’sjustsodifficult.Therearesomanyexpressions.IrememberwhenIsteppedofftheairplane,Iliterallydidn’tknowasinglewordinJapanese,andwhenItriedtoordersomethingtoeatatalocalrestaurantIwasincrediblydifficult.Thatwasnotafunexperience.
Another thing that took me a while togetahangofusing was the transportation system here. BecauseI’mfromasmalltownthatdidn’tevenhaveatrainstationIhadnoexperiencenavigatingthemazewhichistheTokyoMetro.Ifrequentlygotlost,orgotonthewrongtraininthebeginning.Also,commutingtoworkonareallypackedtraindidtakesomegettingusedto. ButI’vebeendoingthiseverydayforyearsnow.Actually,I’msousedtoitnowthatIdon’tthinkIcouldlivewithoutthetrainshere.
Earthquakesoverhereoccurmuchmorefrequentlythanbackhome.ForthefirstfewyearsIwasreallyscaredanytimeoneofthemhit,evenifitwasjustalittleone.Butnow,I’vebecome accustomedtothemsomuchthatthelasttimewehadasmallquakeIthoughtItwasjustpartofthemovieIwaswatching.
Thatbeingsaid,thereareoneortwothingsthatI’mnot100%usedtoyet. I know I’ve been hereforagesbutI’mstillsurprisedbyallthestrangefestivalstheyhavehere.IthoughtIknewthemall,buteachyearIfindoutaboutaneworstrangerfestival.Justtheoverday,Ifoundoutthereisanrealfestivalwherethewholepointistosimplyyellasloudasyoucan.Itkindofsoundslikefunactually.Imighttrytogo.
Also,Idon’tthinkI’llevergetusedtothefashionhere.It’sjustsocrazyandchangesallthetime.It’simpossibletokeepupwith.Luckily,Icanjustwearasuiteverydaysoitdoesn’treallyaffectmesomuch.

Japanisgreat.Ofcoursethelanguageandculturearedifferenttobackhome,butJapanisalsoalittledifferenttobackhomeinafewsubtleways.Forexample,everyoneinthecountryseemstobringanumbrellawiththem,orhaveasmallumbrellaintheirbagdespitewhetheritlooksasif it going to rain or not.
I’vehadlotsoffunexperienceshere.Forexample,I’llneverforgetthefirsttimesomeonebowedtome.ItwasagirlthatIhadmetonlineanddecidedtovisitwhileIwasoverhere.Whenwemetsheleanedforwardasiftokissme,soIplantedakissherrightonthemouth.ShedidnotreactthewayIthoughtshewould.Shecompletelyfreakedout.Shethenquiteangrilyexplainedtomethatshewassimplybowing,andwasnotinanywaytryingtokissme.Ihaveneverfeltsoembarrassedinmywholelife.
OnethingthatI’verealizedaboutJapanisthatyoucanalmostsmokeanywhere.Onetime,whenMasahirocamebacktothehotelhesmelledasifhehadbeensmoking,eventhoughhedoesn’tsmoke.WhenIcommentedonthesmellthetoldmethatthepeoplehehadbeenwithearlierhadbeensmoking.ThatmakessenseIguess,eventhoughtheywereatafamilyrestaurant.
Masahiroisagoodfriend,buthedoesgetalittleannoyingsometimes.Healwaysactsasifhekneweverything.Wheninfact,heisoftenwronginmostregards.I’mstartingtogetsickofit.

A museum is simply an institutethatconservesacollectionofitems(usuallyartifacts) forthegeneralpublictoview.
MyfavoritemuseumistheMuseumofContemporaryArt.Ireallyenjoylookingatdifferenttypesofartandhowpeopleexpressthemselves.IalsoliketheNationalHistoryMuseumbecausetheyhavesomanyitemsofscientific, artistic, culturalandhistoric importance. I think it’s very important that we educateourchildrenon theimportanceof preserving our heritageforfuture generations.
Last week, I went to an exhibitionatalocalmuseumthatwasshowcasingdifferentartifactsfromancientEgypt.Theyhadsomewonderfulsculptures,theyevenhadtheoriginalarchaeologist who discoveredtheartifactsmakeaquickguestappearanceandhaveaquickchatwiththecrowd.Itwasreallycooltomeetarealarchaeologist.Ihadnevermetonebefore.Theexhibition was just temporary;itwasonlyonforthreeweeks.Iusuallyprefergoingtoseethetemporary exhibitions becauseI’vealreadyseenthepermanentexhibitsatthelocalmuseumsmultipletimes.
MyfavoriteeraortimeperiodinhistoryhastobetheRenaissance.AnytimeIseeworksofart fromtheRenaissanceIalwaysimaginewhatlifewouldhavebeenlikeduringoneofthemostamazingtimesinthehistoryofart.
IrememberwhenIwenttotheLouvreinParis,thereweresomanybeautifulworksofart. Iwantedsoseethemall,butIjustdidn’thavetime.IgottomeetthecuratoroftheLouvrethough.Thatwasfun.AndaftertalkingtohimforabitIrealizedthatitwasreallyhardtorun a museumandcareforallthedifferentpricelessartifacts.

Yesterday,Itookmyclassonafieldtriptothelocalaquariumandtheyhadareallygoodtime.Itwas very educationalandtheyalllearnedalotaboutmarinelifeandtheimportanceofconservation.
AnytimeIgototheaquariumbymyselfIliketomoseyaroundatmyownpaceandtakemytimelookingateachandeveryexhibit.Thekidshoweverwereabitdifferent.Theyracedaroundtheaquariumasfastastheycould.Theyonlytimetheyallstoppedwaswhentheysawthegargantuancentraltank.
Thecentraltankisamazingbecauseitiscompletelytransparentandithouses over 3,000 differentkindsoffish.Therearealsotwowhalesharksinthere.Thekidshadneverseen a whale sharkupclosebeforeandtheyjustgazedat it while it swum past. They were all mesmerizedforagood10minutesorsowatchingthatwhaleshark.Ifounditprettyfascinatingmyself.Watchingthisgiantfishswimthroughthecrystal-clearwaterwasamazing.Everyonewasimpressedwithjust how immensethewhalesharkwas.Oneofthekidscommentedthatitkindoflookedlikeaflatoversizedgreynurseshark.AndIhadtoagreewithhimbecausehewasright.
Weallenjoyedthedifferentshowstheyhadduringtheday.Theyheldaperformance every two hourssowewereabletoseequiteafew.Watchingthesealsdotrickswasgreatfun.Thekidsalsolovedwatchingfeedingtimeatthesharktank.
Wesawlotsofotherinterestingthingtoo.Wesawakelpforest.Wesawlotsofinterestingandbrightlycoloredtropicalfish.Wetouchedandplayedwiththelittlecreatures at the pettingand tidepools.Thatwasfunbecausesomepartsoftheexhibitsweresee-throughsothekidscouldseewheresomeoftheanimalswerehiding.Thekidswereespeciallyhappywhenoneoftheguidescameoverandexplainedallaboutthedifferentecosystemsintheoceanandwhatanimalsare indigenousto this region.
The aquarium was really worldclassandthankstoitanditswonderfulstaffIthinkthekidshaveanewappreciationforaquaticlife.Irecommendthatyoutakeyourkidsthereaswellsomeday.

Iusuallygotwoorthreetimesaweek.MostofthetimeIgowithmyfriends,butifnooneisavailableIjustgobymyself.Atkaraoke,weusuallyonlysingpopularwell-known songs, but sometimes we break out some oldiesjustforfun.Evenifyoudon’tknowthewordsyoucanstillhum along, or use a tamborine or a maraca.Also,youcansingbackupforpeopleifyoudon’twanttosingbyyourself.Singingbackupiseasybecauseeventhoughmostpeopleusuallydon’tknow all the lyricstoasong,ifthesonghasbeenontheradioforawhile,thereisaprettystrongchancethattheyaregoingtoknowthechorus pretty well.
Everyone always has their go-to-song.Mineis“Hero”byMariahCarey.Ireallylovehersongsbecauseshecanhittheseamazinghigh notesandIcantoo.Mybrother’sgo-to-songis“InTheEnd”byLincolnPark.He’sprettygoodatsingingittoo,whichisn’treallyasurprisesincehe’sbeensingingthesamesongatkaraokeforover10yearsnow.
Iwenttomyfirstopenmicnightlastweekanditwasareallyinterestingexperience.Someoftheperformerswereamazingandotherswerejustterrible.Thisoneguywasjusttheworst.Hewascompletelytonedeaf.Hedidn’tsingonepartofthesongin key.
IrememberthefirsttimeIcompetedagainst someone on stage. It was amazing. I was only about15andmyfriendsandIhaddecidedtohaveasingofftodecideonceandforall,whothebestsingerinourgroupwas.Needlesstosay,Iwon.Whenyouareupon stage, it’s important knowthelyricsbyheart, be able to sing accapellaconfidentlyandtoreallyprojectyourvoice. Alsodon’tstrainyourselftoomuch,becauseyouknow,otherwiseyoumayloseyourvoice.

OnFriday,lastweekIwenttomylittlebrother’swedding.Hedidn’thavehisweddingina chapellikepeopleusuallydo.Hehadhisweddingonthebeach.Hewasluckytohavehisweddingonsuchaniceday.Thesunwasshining,thereweren’tanycloudsintheskyandthetemperaturewasperfect;nottoohot,nottoocold.
Theservicewasgreat.Thebridecameoutinthiswonderfuldress.Shelookedsobeautifulthat noonecouldtaketheireyesoffher.Mybrothercertainlyisaluckyman.Whentheyexchangedtheirvowsthough,mybrothersaidthewrongwoman’snameandeveryonefounditsofunnythat theycouldn’tstoplaughingforagoodtwoorthreeminutes.Imyself,hadagoodlaughaswell.
Whentheservicewasoveritwastimetostartthereception.Thereceptionwassomuchfun. Everyonehadagreattimedancing,thefoodwasgreat,butbestofalltheyhadanopenbar.There were somanydifferentdrinkstochoosefromthatIhadahadtimedecidingwhattoget eachtimeIwentback.
Probablythebestpartofthereceptionwaswhentheybroughtoutthecake.Itwassuchabig cakethattheyneededtwopeopletoliftit.Itwasalittledifficulttocutup,butittastedsimplyamazing.I’dneverhadsuchanamazingcakebefore,andIdon’tknowifIeverwillagain.WhenIfoundouthowmuchthecastcost,Ialmostfainted.
Irememberseeingmybrotherbeforethewedding.Hewassonervousaboutgettingmarriedthat hehadforgottentoorganizeatux.Thatwastheonlythinghisfiancéehadaskedhimtodofortheweddingandhehadforgottentodoit.Sonow,ashewasnoticeablystressedIofferedtorunoutquicklyandgrabatuxforhim.Heagreed,thenIjumpedinmycarandmadeamaddashforthelocalmenswearshop.
Igotthereprettyquickly,butIhadtroubledecidingwhattuxtorent.Therewereso many tuxedosthatIjustcouldn’tmakeupmymind.Ithoughttherewasonlyonestyleoftux,butthereweresomany.Intheend,Ijustaskedtheclerktorecommendone,thenIpaidforitandquicklyheadedbacktomybrother’shousebecausetherewasonly50minutesremaininguntiltheweddingwassupposedtostart.
