Agbiag tat amin!

Sumulong, Sumulat, Manindi-gan at Magmulat!

AMMOYO 2011

THE BEST TIME IS NOW TO make a stand on issues that govern the society. A chance to intensify social awareness among campus journalists and to protect the press from oppression. It is the right moment to finally release oneself from the confines of classrooms and involve oneself to the society that one belongs to and strives to improve.

The College Editors Guild of the Philippines - La Union Chapter has been struggling to defend and uphold the rights of the students and people to information and

free expression. It now marks the 10th year anniversary of its annual journalism con-vention, AMMOYO, with the theme "Isang Dekada: Pluma ng Sambayanan, Sandata ng Paninindigan."

A decade of enhancing young journalists' skills in writing and social awareness, AM-MOYO 2011 aims to maintain CEGP's motto: "To write is already to choose," through training-workshops rendered and discussions of socio-political issues. Furthermore, AMMOYO strives to equip campus journalists with the highest standard of journal-

ism it can offer.

The right time is now Guil-ders, to involve your selves in the transformation of the society. Only this involve-ment can mark the true journalist in you. Be the prime movers in the jour-nalists' continuing battle for freedom of expression and right to information.

MANUEL ARGUILA5TH GAWAD

GAWAD MANUEL ARGUILLA is the College Editors Guild of the Philippines-La Union Chapter's annual literary contest for student writers. It is held every year during Am-moyo, CEGP-La Union Chap-ter's annual student press congress and convention. It is open to all members of a student publication within the Ilocos Region.

It is named after one of the greatest Filipino fiction writer, Manuel Arguilla, a native of Bauang, La Union, to honor his works and ide-als. The contest aims to draw inspiration from Manuel Arguilla's works and life to

arouse the literarily prow-ess of young budding writers and awaken their sense of nationalism.

Manuel E. Arguilla (1911-1944) is an acclaimed Filipino short story writer as well as a patriot and a guerrilla hero.

He was born in Barrio Nagreb-can in Bauang, La Union on June 17, 1911. He was the fourth child of Crisanto Arguilla and Margarita Estabillo, hard-work-ing farmer folk who owned a small piece of land. Aside from being a farmer, his father was also a carpenter; his mother, on the other hand, was an oc-casional potter.

Arguilla the writer often por-trayed the life of the ordinary Filipino, usually the rural Ilo-cano, in his more than 50 short stories that have permanently enriched Philippine Literature. The critic Leopoldo Y. Yabes cited him as 'the best crafts-man among Filipino fictionists in English, (whose voice) is the only really authentic voice. He is shamelessly Filipino.' His stories are still considered un-rivalled in his depiction of the life of the Ilocano farmer.

In the prime of his life, Arguilla died a hero's death.
