    What To Expect

This exclusive program is designed or

Vanderbilt alumni , amily, children and

riends to explore the natural and cultu ral

histories o Ecuador and the Galpagos

    Islands. In the Andean Highlands,

activities include gentle hikes and visits

to cultural and historical sites, along with

    the opportunity or horseback riding.

Although only 22 miles rom the equator,

Quito has a s pring-like climate or most

o the year due to its high altitude (9,252

eet). Travel is during the dry season,

when temperatures range rom the 50s F

at night to th e high 70s F during t he day.In the Galpagos, walks are approximately

one to two miles long (sometimes over

uneven and rocky terrain) at a leisurely

    pace suitable or wildlie observation.

There will be wet landings on many

islands. Dinghy rides along the coast

and shorter walks are available or

participants as an alternative to longer

    and more challenging excursions.

    Daily activities vary, but

    include opportunities

    or kayaking, swimming

    and snorkeling, and

    talks by local naturalist

guides. The Galpa-gos Islands are at sea

    level and temperatures

    range between the 70s

    and 90s F. The average

    water temperature in

    June is 73 F. Travel

    on this program is by

    regularly scheduled commercial airlines,

    motor coach, air-conditioned ship,

    and Zodiac-style dinghies. This i s a

    moderately active program.

    The Post-Trip Machu Picchu optional

    extension is a moderately active

    program. Throughout Andean cities,

    temperatures range rom 30 40 F

at night to 60 75 during the day, and

well spend several days at el evations

rom 7,600 to 11,200 eet. The Machu

    Picchu extension has been designed

to allow for an easier acclimatiza-

tion when we travel to the Andean

highlands by overnighting in theUrubamba Valley at approximately

8,000 feet. We continue to Machu

Picchu at 7,600 feet, leaving Cusco

for the end when you have had a

    chance to get acclimatized. There

    is significant stair and step

climbing at the ruins. Lima, the

capital city of Peru, is at sea level.
