PHILOSOPHY The Saskatchewan Nurses Foundation believes that: all people, at some time in their lives, will be recipients of nursing care; recipients of nursing care, and nurses themselves, desire nursing care to include the use of

current knowledge based on research; society benefits when nurses are highly knowledgeable, competent professionals; society wishes to share with individual nurses and employers the responsibility to

contribute financially to the efforts of nurses to enhance their competence through education and research;

the Foundation is an effective mechanism through which society can contribute financially

to the education of nurses; and the Foundation has the privilege and responsibility to make its work known throughout

Saskatchewan, interprovincially and nationally.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

SNF PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2016-2017

As a registered charity providing financial assistance to eligible Registered Nurses (RNs) in support of continuing education, the Saskatchewan Nurses Foundation (SNF) continues to be a relevant and appreciated financial resource. Our membership for the June, 2016 to May, 2017 membership year was 159 members: 147 RN; 3 RN(NP); 1 RN(retired); 1 RPN; 1 Nursing student; and 6 members of the public. Of the 147 RNs, 46 were newly graduated RNs; SNF provides a one year complimentary membership to graduates with their initial registration as an RN who complete the membership application. Great effort is put into increasing membership each year. We continue to run the membership challenge between SUN and SRNA at their annual meetings. This is a friendly, collegial competition to see which annual meeting can obtain the most memberships and serves as a perfect opportunity to communicate the mandate of SNF and also encourage RNs to apply for funding. The Foundation continues to accept on-line contributions through www.canadahelps.org. As well, people have the option to use Paypal to purchase SNF memberships online through the SNF website. The Board also continues to work to find new and better ways to raise funds, beyond membership fees, to continue our efforts to provide bursaries to RNs. We greatly appreciate and thank the donors for supporting SNF’s work. Several major fund raising events were held this year. The SNF held a live and silent auction in conjunction with the SRNA 100th Anniversary Gala; $6785.00 was raised. In addition, each ticket to the event included a $25 donation to SNF; this raised an additional $5325.00. Donations at the photo booth pictures raised an additional $220.00 for SNF. The annual 50/50 draw was also held at both the SUN and SRNA annual meetings. $1237.50 was raised at the SUN meeting; $515.00 at the SRNA meeting. Dr. Beth Horsburgh was the winner of the door prize of a trip to Mexico or Cuba at the SRNA 100th Anniversary Gala. She donated the prize to SNF which was raffled off. The raffle was held at the SRNA annual meeting; an additional $1305.00 was raised from this raffle item. The winner of this was Erica Vogel, RN. SNF continues to use computer based technology to facilitate meetings. This has greatly contributed to the ability for RNs anywhere in the province to not only participate in the annual meeting, but also for RNs to become Board Members and participate in the work of the Foundation without having to travel. This has greatly facilitated involvement of RNs throughout the province and saved the Foundation travel costs. SNF Board reviewed investment information with the assistance of our financial experts (Al Kimber and Gene Irwin of Tyler & Associates). Al and Gene were exceptionally informative in explaining the best investment options for our Foundation. At this time it is not possible to standardize a bursary amount for each applicant, but will continue to set award amounts based on

2016 Annual Report Page 5

finances available and number of applicants. The goal of the Foundation is to establish a principal amount that can earn enough interest to sustain many bursary awards well into the future. Cindy Peternelj-Taylor, Twyla Salm (public representative) and myself have completed terms on the Board of Directors. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank these great RN leaders for their contribution to SNF. I would also like to encourage all RNs to consider becoming members of SNF and potentially running for a Board of Directors position. In closing, we would like to thank Robin Evans for her continued work as Executive Director of SNF. We are excited about the upcoming opportunities and hope that you will consider joining us in the work we do to support RN education. Sincerely, Beverly Balaski, RN President, Board of Directors, SNF SNF Board of Directors: Beverly Balaski, RN, President Denise Dick, RN (SUN), Moose Jaw Lori Garchinski, RN, Regina Brenda Hackl, Regina (non-nurse member) Donna Marin, RN (SRNA), Regina Laurelle Pachal, RN, Regina Cindy Peternelj Taylor, RN, Saskatoon Twyla Salm, Regina (non-nurse member) Janice Walker, RN, Saskatoon

SNF FACTS

Saskatchewan Nurses Foundation SNF was founded in 1981 through an amendment to the Registered Nurses Act. It was registered as a Non-Profit Corporation on September 15, 1988. The SNF Bursary Program has been developed to:

1. Foster excellence in nursing. 2. Further the contribution of the nursing profession to society.

The Fund The Foundation was launched with a $50,000.00 gift from the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association. Individual and organizational gifts are sought each year to build the fund. Eligibility To receive assistance, individuals must be current members of the SRNA and be pursuing a degree program or clinical course, have attended a professional development conference or have completed initial CNA certification. Upon completion of studies, bursary recipients must spend at least one year working in the field of nursing in Saskatchewan for every $2000.00 awarded. The Need is Great Nurses are the largest health care profession, numbering over 10,000 in Saskatchewan. The changing environment in which health care is delivered, the knowledge explosion and advances in technology together impact on the need for continuing education for nurses. This continuing education will contribute to safe competent nursing care for people of Saskatchewan. Because the demand exceeds funds available, SNF continues to seek donations to enable it to meet its objectives. Bursaries Awarded From 1981 to 2016 SNF awarded 472 bursaries valued at $424,632.50 to Saskatchewan nurses.
