Poor Vinyl breaks and puncture easily during use, making it a poor barrier. Excellent* Nitrile film is highly resistant to punctures and tears. Very Good* Polychloroprene exhibits very good barrier protection properties, although tear resistance is marginal. ALLERGEN CONTENT Varies Latex contains protein and chemical allergens. Check with the manufacturers and read glove labeling for specific allergen content information. Good Vinyl contains no latex proteins but typically contains some curing agents and other chemical ingredients. Very Good Nitrile contains no latex proteins but contains a low level of chemical allergens. Very Good Polychloroprene contains no latex proteins but contains a low level of chemical allergens. STRENGTH & DURABILITY Excellent Natural rubber latex is very strong and durable. Tensile strength is typically above 3,000 psi. Poor Vinyl is the weakest of the glove films and tends to break and puncture easily when stressed. Tensile strength is typically below 2,000 psi. Excellent Nitrile film is extremely strong with puncture resistance superior to all glove films. Tensile strength is typically above 3,000 psi. Very Good Unbroken polychloroprene is strong. However, once punctured, the film tends to tear easily. Tensile strength is typically above 3,000 psi. ELASTICITY Excellent Latex elasticity is superior to all films. Memory is very high allowing the film to return to its original shape. Elongation limit is about 750%. Fair to Poor Vinyl elasticity is limited and varies from brand to brand. Typical elongation limit is less than 500%. The film exhibits limited memory. Very Good Nitrile elasticity is very good with elongation limit typically 500% or better. Nitrile exhibits some memory and tends to take the shape of the wearer’s hand over time. Excellent Polychloroprene elasticity is close to that of latex and memory is very high allowing the film to retain its original shape. Elongation limit is typically about 750%. PUNCTURE RESISTANCE Very Good Latex is resistant to punctures but can be pierced by very sharp objects. Poor Vinyl is easily punctured by sharp objects. Excellent One of nitrile’s strong points. Puncture resistance is superior to all other films. Good Polychloroprene is somewhat puncture resistant. FIT & COMFORT Excellent Latex provides excellent comfort and fit due to its high elasticity, low modulus, and excellent memory. Fair Low elasticity limits the fit and comfort for many users. The wrist diameter is usually very large making the glove baggy around the cuff. Very Good Nitrile provides very good comfort and fit due to its high elasticity and memory. High modulus results in a slightly tighter fit. Excellent Polychloroprene provides excellent comfort and fit due to its high elasticity, low modulus, and excellent memory. CHEMICAL RESISTANCE Good Provides good protection from most caustics and detergents. Also recommended by OSHA for cytotoxic drugs. Poor Offers very little protection and is easily permeated by organic solvents. Excellent Nitrile exhibits excellent resistance to most chemicals especially harsh solvents. Very Good Provides protection from acids alcohols, caustics, detergents, and ketones. ECONOMY Very Good Latex provides very good economy for general use. Powder-free versions are more expensive than powdered. Very Good Vinyl costs are typically similar to those of latex. It is a low-cost alternative to latex if latex allergies are a concern and a high level of barrier protection is not critical. Good Nitrile is more expensive than latex but can be justified when weighed against the cost of managing latex allergies. Good Polychloroprene is more expensive than latex but can be justified when weighed against the cost of managing latex allergies. USAGE Preferred by many due to its proven barrier protection. If latex is chosen, NIOSH recommends using only low- protein, powder-free version. A low-cost alternative to natural rubber latex for short procedures not involving blood or bodily fluids. Alternative to natural rubber latex for those who are latex allergic. Also used when high strength and/or chemical protection is required. Alternative to natural rubber latex for those who are latex allergic. * These ratings are based on physical properties only such as tensile strength, tear resistance, elasticity and crosslinking.
