selective defrosting for string quartet

selective defrosting duration: ~8’
-Notes to performers-
Arrows above the staves are used to specify a gradient in bow position along the axis of the strings; arrows ending in ‘SP’ indicate a movement from ordinario to sul ponticello, and arrows ending in ‘O’ indicate a movement back to ordinario (entrances that begin in a specific position are marked as such, either SP or O). All tremolos should be unmetered and as fast as possible. However, in the section marked rehearsal A, there should be a slow transition between straight notes and tremoloed notes (no sudden onsets). A “thrown bow,” or ricochet, is indicated with a slur above a dashed line (in both cases, there is also a slide between the pitches involved). Passages marked “clb” (col lengo battuto) with glissandi lines and x noteheads indicate that the indicated strings should be struck with the wood of the bow and allowed to richorchet while the fingers are drawn up the fingerboard and the bow is moved from halfway up the fingerboard to the bridge. Lastly, square noteheads indicate that greater bow pressure is to be used to create distorted sounds using scratch tone. Feel free to allow the pitch to change as pressure distortion increases. The notes with slanted boxed noteheads in the cello from mm. 1-13 indicate that the cellist is to bow the horizontal surface of the bridge (between the strings and the body of the instrument) to produce an airy, scratchy tone. Notes with triangular heads indicate that the string should be bowed from underneath of the string (while you are bowing the bridge), and an open circle above indicates that you should draw out a harmonic from the A string by increasing the amount of pressure and bow hair on the string, as opposed to the surface of the bridge.

selective defrosting for string quartet
violin I
t i n a t a l l o n 2012
© copyright 2012 disparate measures music (ascap) all rights reserved.
selective defrosting duration: ~8’

Violin II2
selective defrosting for string quartet
viola
t i n a t a l l o n 2012
© copyright 2012 disparate measures music (ascap) all rights reserved.
selective defrosting duration: ~8’
