Groetnis.

A word from the Editor

Phillip Rosser

Well, after numerous calls to members to inform us if they want to receive the SPANNER by snail mail, only a few requests were received. So if you do not receive the magazine in the mail, it is due to the fact that you did not request it. The SPANNER is available for download on the club’s website at www.scocc.co.za and it will also be e-mailed to the e-mail address that we have on our data basis. For this reason it is imperative that you keep us informed of any change of address or cell phone numbers. I need to apologise for not including the article by Derek Stuart-Findlay on the 2016 George Old Car Show – Driven by Oakhurst Insurance, as well as the preceding tours in the last SPANNER. I still don’t know how I managed to omit the article, but this time it’s in. Derek is a historian and writer of several books on the motoring history in South Africa. He was a participant on the Vettour the day before the show, organised by Philip Kuschke.

oumotorskou in 1997 gehou was. Stuur gerus vir my inligting of terugvoering oor uitstappies. Keep the wheels turning

JONG ENTOESIASTE ONTBYTRIT

NINE DAYS IN FEBRUARY

A carnival of Historic Motoring

By Derek Stuart-Findlay

NINE DAYS IN FEBRUARY – A CARNIVAL OF HISTORIC MOTORING By Derek Stuart-Findlay A fascinating week got off to an explosive start on Saturday 6 February, with hard-fought duals between international competitors at the Killarney Circuit, the second leg of the annual Passion for Speed historic racing series. That evening the Crankhandle Club, at a braai at its clubhouse in Old Wynberg Village, entertained participants in the 6th pre-1919 Veteran Run organised by Harvey Metcalf and Hilton Franz. This annual event is held to commemorate the first reliability run to Kalk Bay by the Automobile Club of South Africa in December 1901. A presentation that evening highlighted the dramatic effectiveness of motorised transport during the rebellion and the invasion of German SWA just over a century ago. Visitors were welcomed from Gauteng, the Free State, KZN and the Eastern Cape, many of them were to continue on during the week to the SAVVA Veteran National at Slanghoek Mountain Resort near Worcester, the Southern Cape Old Motor Club Veteraantoer (Vettoer) starting from Albertinia, and the club’s annual George Old Car Show over the following weekend. The week loomed large, and attained international status when the ebullient Eric Edwards joined us from Canada. Early the following morning activity around the clubhouse reached a crescendo when scores of club members waved off a penny farthing bicycle, three motorcycles and 25 cars. It was a record turnout and featured Roy Watson’s 1904 De Dion Bouton and Ali van Jaarsveld’s 1912 Buick Roadster from Johannesburg, Waldo Scribante’s 1913 Benz from George, and 13 Ford Model Ts, including those driven by visitors Kevin Casey, Alastair McDonald, Paul Mouton, Peter Hall, Johann Claassen, Tom van der Vyver,

Arthur Duvenhage, Philip Kuschke and Ockert van der Berg. The Benz and Wolseley were complemented by club members in the De Dietrich, Nordenfelt, EMF, Rover Colonial, Singer, Hupmobile and the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. Brian Wallace and his team participated enthusiastically on their BAT, Douglas and New Hudson motorcycles. Club President Andre du Toit flagged off the participants, led by the intrepid Colin Greyvensteyn on his penny farthing bicycle. He put in an incredible effort, particularly when cycling into a strong south-easterly breeze along the coast between the refreshment break at Kalk Bay Harbour and the lunch destination at Simon’s Town. Many enthusiastic non-veteran-owning club members cheered the participants as they careered past the breakfast stop, Dixies, on the coast at Glencairn. The slower cars continued along the Main Road but the more athletic climbed the Red Hill Road and entered Simon’s Town via Miller’s Point from the south. Tourists expressed amazement at the variety of vehicles lined up in Jubilee Square as the participants enjoyed an excellent lunch in the Seven Seas Club. On the Monday morning 17 cars and two motorcycles participating in the annual SAVVA Veteran National, organised by Harvey and Hilton, headed out to Villiersdorp for the start of the rally across to Slanghoek via Rawsonville. The back-up vehicle drivers were treated to a startling spectacle as they headed up the Franschhoek Pass. We were right behind Greg Bjorkman in his Ford Model T as he scooted around the bend halfway up the pass, suddenly the wooden spokes on his front right wheel collapsed and car careered across the road with splinters flying in all directions. Amazingly, the remains of the spokes protected the wheel hub and not too much damage was done. At the end of the day the backup drivers, highly impressed with the Slanghoek Mountain Resort, left reluctantly to head back to the city. At the Senior’s meeting at the clubhouse on the Wednesday morning we were treated to a fascinating presentation by Peter Hills on the restoration of his extremely rare 1929 Morris Minor, found abandoned in the bush in Zambia. On the Thursday I was back on

Garageaand 6 April

NINE DAYS IN FEBRUARY - Continued

the rally circuit as the backup driver for one of the Minor’s rivals, Graeme Wares’ 1926 Austin Seven. Stopping off at Slanghoek to pick up backup vehicles, we headed off to Albertinia. The local hotel was the overnight stop for the start of the 11th annual Vettoer, organised by Philip Kuschke and Chris van Staden. The run to George was limited to cars with rear wheel brakes only, including those of the mid to late 1920s. The sight of 29 old vehicles packed into the yard behind the Albertinia Hotel that evening was truly impressive, matched only by the volume of noise in the dining-room that night.

The next morning we headed off to into the beautiful countryside in the hills to the north. Dust from 18 km of gravel road tarnished pristine brass work and a few carburettor settings, but refreshments at the Jakkalsvlei Kelders soon resolved all difficulties. The 185 km route passed Herbertsdale and the Gondwana Game Reserve, through Hartenbos, the lunch stop at Bottelierskop, and Grootbrakrivier. Classic vehicles thronged York Street in George as we entered the grounds of the P.W. Botha College to set up the cars for the 20th Old Car Show. This event clearly has a major impact on the economy of the town, all restaurants were packed, and in addition to ourselves, our B & B was full, occupied by show participants from as far afield as KZN, Limpopo, and the Northern Cape.

Some 980 cars formed the display for the weekend’s show, I had not attended before and my impressions were vivid. Local support for the visitors was superb; Peter Hyslop had a serious problem after two of his wheel rims on his 1928 Falcon Knight were severely split, he was delighted next morning when they were handed back as new, skilfully repaired by Ockert van der Berg. A highlight for me was the display of veteran cars, dominated by Tom van der Vyver’s superb 1904 De Dion Bouton restoration project. Stimulating displays were mounted by a number of individual clubs. Mercedes Benz, Borgward, Porsche, DKW and Volkswagen with its row of antique combis, represented the German marques, Renault, Peugeot and Citroën the French. In an interview, Louise Farrell explained that the name of her Citroën was ‘Charlotte’ – she was an attractive French lady but if she misbehaved the ‘C’ in her name was

dropped! The Americans were widely displayed, and in the auction a magnificent 1948 Packard Clipper convertible was sold for R 190 000. It was a pleasure to see the ex-Tony White 1922 Studebaker, the Galloping Naartie, on the field, the car is now in the hands of a Studebaker enthusiast from Johannesburg. The Brits were represented by displays of MGs, Jaguars, Triumphs, and Morris Minors with an impressive line-up of Rolls-Royces; Mike Watson’s 1915 Silver Ghost looked magnificent. We jumped at the offer of sundowners in the back seat of John and Sue Haresnape’s Silver Wraith, they were downed in infinitely more comfort than in the same space offered by the Austin Seven. We slipped out to visit Mike Rourke and his superb 1924 Talbot-Darracq and Vauxhall sports cars, and that evening I joined Harvey, Hilton and their merry ‘Koshuis Manne’ for a visit to the local dirt-track racing circuit. Our neighbours at the track had a pet sheep named Popeye, who went “baaa” every time his favourite racing driver lost out! I last watched an event of this nature some 50 years ago and had forgotten the skill levels achieved. The noise, dust and braai-smoke took a tremendous toll on ears, eyes and throats, but we all ended up cheering for one of the last men standing, the talented driver of what must be the fastest lime-green Volksie Beetle ever built.

We wearily joined a convoy of old cars as we headed back to Cape Town on the Sunday afternoon. With some difficulty we overtook Len Ward in his 1928 Austin 16 and Peter Hyslop in his Falcon Knight, these senior members, having driven all the way there and back, are an example to us all. Congratulations to Harvey, Hilton, Philip, Chris and their teams for organising a superb nine days of events, they even arranged that we reached home in time to express best wishes to our loved ones for Valentine’s Day!

2016 20th GEORGE OLD CAR SHOW

SAVVA Technical Tip 102

Modern fuel filters

Many of us, very wisely fit modern fuel filters to our early cars and bikes. These filters are inexpensive, extremely efficient and ideal for cars and bikes that stand round a lot building up muck in the tank. Once on a National rally I ended on the side of the road with a blocked filter. Any speed above 30 kph the car shuddered and shook. Fortunately, a passing competitor saw my plight and came to the rescue. Unlike me, they were wise enough to carry a spare which they kindly gave me so I was able to get going. The lesson learned was to carry a spare – they are small and cheap enough. Under normal conditions with vehicles that are used regularly these filters last a long time but they don’t have that much capacity and block fairly easily if you have gunk in the tank. Reading a US vintage car publication they offered the following advice:

“Very often fuel filters are fitted into the line between the pump to the carburettor, which could be very dangerous. The pump is pumping the fuel at around 3 to 6 psi and if the rubber hose perishes – as they seem

to do prematurely nowadays, fuel is going to spray all over the engine causing a potential fire hazard”.

Their advice is to fit the filter before the pump where if a rubber fuel line perishes it will only suck air and not cause a major catastrophe. The fuel line from the pump to the carburettor should be solid metal.

“Pieter du Toit, from the Early Ford Car Club has added the following good advice to the Tip on fuel filters. Something you also need to know about modern fuel filter paper is that the paper is gel impregnated, enabling the filter paper to absorb water in the fuel. The problem is when the gel gets saturated with water the filter blocks, even though the filter looks clean.”

A couple is sitting in their living room, sipping wine.

Out of the blue the wife says: “I love you!”

Is that you or the wine talking?” asks the husband.

“It’s me,” says the wife, “talking to the wine.”

More Lighter Side

A man and his wife were having problems and giving each other the silent treatment. Suddenly the man realized that he would need his wife to wake him at five the next day for a business flight. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence, (and loose) he wrote a note “Please wake me at 05:00". He left it where he knew she would find it. Next morning, he woke to discover it was 09:00 and he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see why she hadn’t woken him, when he noticed a note from her by the bed. The note said, “It is 5am. Wake up." Men are just not well enough equipped for these kinds of contests
