TRATIf travelling from north along the Sukhumvit Rd. you will pass the big “mushroom” that welcomes you to Trat province.

Trat Province is divided in 7 different districts (Amphoe) in where Koh Chang is number 7 and Koh Kood is number 6. The other is Mueang Trat, Khlong Yai, Phang Saming, Bo Rai and Laem Ngop district. Overall in the province lives about 225,000 people.

Most foreigners who come to Trat do so to visit the island of Koh Chang or any of the other more than 50 islands surrounding Koh Chang.

Trat is located in the east of Thailand with borders to Chanthaburi Province to the northwest, Cambodia to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the south.Trat is most famous for gemstone mining and trading and of course all the paradise islands where Koh Chang shines brightest.

Koh Chang - The Elephant Island. Koh Chang is the largest among more than 50 is-lands of Trat region (third largest in Thai-land) and has skyrocketed become one of the favorite destinations in Thailand. With unspoiled nature, nearness to a large number of paradise islands and endless white sandy beaches surrounded by crys-tal clear warm water, it is not surprising.

How it all beganKoh Chang was long known as a back-packers favorite. They found their way to Koh Chang in the late 80s where residents offered them food and shelter for almost no money at all. More and more people found Koh Chang and the locals began to expand their business and slowly start to build on what today is hotels and resorts on the island. Today, Koh Chang has turned into a popular holiday resort for both Thais as Westerners, especially families with children thrives here like the fish in water.

With a lot of imagination, you can see the outline of the elephant’s head to Koh Chang’s lines and the name means “The Elephant Island” in Thai. But there is another story about how the name long before there was drawn maps, or maybe more of a tale, more about that on our web page.

A popular excursion on the island is elephant trekking. After a ride through the jungle on the elephant back you get to scrub the elephants ly-ing outstretched in the water. Washing rites are repeated every day, in the morning. To ride on the elephants is fun but getting to swim with them is even more fun and an experience you will never forget, welcome to Koh Chang!

เกาะเกาะชาง

หมเกาะระยองเกาะเสมดเปนหนงในหมเกาะทมความงดงามในประเทศไทย ทนคณจะเหนวาเเนวปะการงและทรายหาดสวยงามมาก มรานอาหารทสะดวกสบาย บรรยากาศนานง สวนใหญเกาะเปนสถานททองเทยวอทยานแหงชาตทางทะเล และเปนทนยมสำาหรบคนไทยสวนใหญในชวงวนหยดสดสปดาห เหตผลหนงคอเสมดสามารถเดนทางไดงายจากกรงเทพฯ (ประมาณ 2 ชวโมง) ยงมจำานวนมากของนกทองเทยว ทไดหลงรกในการเยยมชมหมเกาะ มนเปนการพกผอนทสมบรณแบบสำาหรบผทตองการแบบงายๆสำาหรบไมกวน หรอสปดาห ตามทคณตองการ เปรยบเทยบเกาะเสมดกบหลายๆสถานท นกทองเทยวมากกวา แตในชวงเดยวกนไมคอยมกจกรรมและทนยงมหาดทเงยบสงบ ทำาใหตองการกลบมาอกในครงตอไป

เกาะกด อยทางดานตะวนออกของเกาะเสมดและประมาณ 6 กโลเมตรจากแผนดนใหญหรอทเรยกวา เกาะกฎหรอเกาะกด ทนนำาใสสะอาดมากและคณสามารถนอนพกผอนบนทรายหาดทสวยงาม และสามารถทำา กจกรรมอนๆอกมากมาย แตละทในเกาะจะมหาดสวนตวซงไมตองกงวลสำาหรบการไวนำา อาบเเดด ดำานำา หรอใชเวลาเดนทางเยยมชมในเกาะ เหมาะสำาหรบการเดนทางไปพกผอนในวนหยด ทหลากหลายไมแพฝงทะเลทแผนดนใหญเลย

เกาะจนทน ไมไกลจากเกาะเสมด อยทางใตนดๆของเกาะเสมด และไมตองสบสนกบเกาะชาง! คณไดมประสบการณในการดำานำาดปะการงทยอดเยยมทชายฝงทางตอนใตของเกาะ ถาคณตองการดำานำา, คณควรไปทเกาะจนทร

ชายฝงตะวนออกเฉยงใต นนคณจะเจอนำาลกปกตประมาณ 12 เมตร แตใน บางสถานทอาจจะลงไปลกทสดประมาณ ท 25 เมตร และชวตทางทะเลทเกาะจนทนเปนทนกลว เพราะคณสามารถพบฉลาม ปลาสงโต ปลากระเบนและปลาเลกๆชนดทมสสนอนๆ เกาะมน ตงอยทางตะวนออกของจงหวดระยองประมาณ 5 กโลเมตร จากหาดแมพมพ ทนสงบสวยงามอยางเหลอเชอ และคณจะไดพบกบการพกผอนเเบบงายๆมเกาะเลกๆสามเกาะอยไมหางจากกนนก กจะม เกาะมนใน เกาะมลกลาง เกาะมลนอก เกาะมลในเปนสถานทศกดสทธ มโครงการปลอยเตาทกอตงขนในประเทศไทยโดยสมเดจพระราชนสรกต ทนจะมพนธเตาทะเลทสวยงาม มการดเเลเปนอยางดกอนทจะไดนำามาปลอยใหอยตามธรรมชาตของพวกเขา

เกาะทะล เกาะทะลกเปนอกหนงแผนดนใหญทมหาดทรายทสวยงาม และเปนทดำานำาดปะการงอกท ในเกาะนนดเหมอนไปมคนอยเลยมนกทองเทยวนอยมาก และมายมรานคาเลยทางดานตะวนออกมทรายหาดทดในขณะททางดานตะวนตกมภเขามากทสดและหนาผา สวนทเหลอของเกาะกเตมไปดวยปาไม เหมาะสำาหรบดำานำาดปะการงดทสดในดานหนงของเกาะ หรอในผนงหนาผาดานทศตะวนตกของเกาะมชองรในนน เลยไดชอวาเกาะทะล (ทะล หมายถง ชองทขาดเปนรเเละสามารถมองเหนอกดานหนงได)


กาะ ระยง - เกาะ ระยง เกาะสวนตวขนาดเลก ทตงอย ประมาณ 1 กโลเมตร จาก ทางทศตะวนตกเฉยงใตของเกาะหมาก หางจากอาวแหลมตกตา หาดทรายสวยงาม เปนเกาะขนาดเลกๆ ม รสอรท บงกะโล ใหนกทองเทยวไดเขาพก และ คณจะตองจาย 30 บาท ในการเขาเทยวชม ในวนหยด คณ สามารถจอง เรอราคาประมาณ 100 บาท เพอไปสงคณทเกาะนนๆ ทมความสวยงาม กบบรรยากาศ ทสดชน จรงๆ ถงจะเปนหาดทเลกๆ เเตกมสงอำานวยความสะดวกใหคณทกอยาง สำาหรบการเดนทางทาง ตอนกลางวน

เกาะขาม - เกาะขามเกาะสวนตว ประมาณ 1 กโลเมตร ทางทศเหนอของ เกาะหมาก มรสอรทขนาดเลก บนเกาะเปน รสอรทท เกาะขาม มไวสำาหรบนกทองเทยวเขาพก เปนเกาะทมชอเสยง ของหน ลาวา สดำา เพมขนจาก หาดทรายสขาว เกาะ ขาม เปนสถานท ทดทสด ทจะมาพกผอน แลวลมทกอยางไปชวขณะ นำาใส ประการงสวยงาม ดงดดใจนกดำานำา พรอมกบการเดนเทาบนหาด ใชเวลาประมาณ สองถงสามชวโมงเทานนเอง

เกาะกระ ดาน - เกาะกระดาน อยทางทศ ตะวนออกเฉยงเหนอ จาก เกาะหมาก ใน อดตทผานมา เคยเปนพนท ท ม ความอดมสมบรณของ ตนไม “ กระดาษ “ ( ตนไม กระดาษ )จงชอ วา เกาะกระดาน เปนทรจกกนดสำาหรบ หาดทราย สขาว ยาว และแนวปะการง ทสวยงาม เกาะ นยงเปนบาน ของพวก กวาง พวกมนมความเชอง คณอาจเหนพวกมนบางเปนบางครง

เกาะรง ( รง ) - ทนเปนเกาะเลก ๆ เปนททองเทยวยอดนยม ทางตะวนตกของ เกาะหมาก พนทไมราบเรยบนก เเตกพอจะสราง รสอรทและบางกะโลไดบาง ทนจะอดมสมบรณไปดวยสตวนานา ชนด ม นก มาสรารงมากมาย เตา คางค

เกาะเหลายา - เกาะเหลายา เปนเกาะเลกๆตงอยไมไกลจากเกาะชาง ประกอบไปดวย เกาะเหลายาใน เกาะเหลายากลาง เกาะเหลายานอก สาม เกาะน เปนเพรชเมดงามเลยกวาได ไปทางทศตะวนตกเฉยงใต จากหาด 3 กโลเมตร คณสามารถมองเหน อยทางดานทศตะวนออกของเกาะชาง เกาะ เหลายาใน ประมาณ 0.9 กโลเมตร ยาวประมาณ 300 เมตร มหาดทรายทสวยงามและกวางขวาง นำา ใส และแนวปะการง ทมสสน มกลมผคนอาศยอยไมมากนก เกาะเหลายากลาง และ เกาะเหลายานอก จะสรางสพานดวยไมเปนทางเดน อยางสวยงามประมาณ 40 เมตร เพออำานวยความสะดวก คณสามารถจองทพกลวงหนาไดทน

เกาะ คลม - เกาะ คลมเปนเกาะท มขนาดเลกและ เงยบสงบ เพยง 5 กโลเมตร ทางทศใตของ เกาะชางและเหมาะสำาหรบการดำานำามาก โดยเฉพาะนกดำานำามอใหม เพราะนำาไมลกมาก และยงเปนเกาะ ทใชเปน สนามรบในป 1941 ระหวาง กองทหารฝรงเศส และกองกำาลง ตดอาวธ ของไทย ในชวง การลาอาณานคม ของฝรงเศสใน อนโดจน HTMS ธนบร กำาลงจมดงอย ในการตอส จนทกวนน เรอรบ ธนบร เปนจด ดำานำาแต ในบางชวงเวลาจะมการมองเหนทเเตกตางกนไป เเละเกาะนคณตองไปกลบ เพราะไมทพก

เกาะงาม - เกาะงาม จะดคลายๆเกาะ พ พ นดหนง เพราะ ดานบน ทคลายกน ในทางภมศาสตรทมภเขาแฝด สองเกาะ ตดกนและมสนทราย ขนาดใหญเชอมตรงกลาง มอาวขนาดเลก ทเกดจากเเนวเขา ทโอบลอมนำาทะเลไว หาดทรายมความกวางประมาณ 25-50 เมตร สวยงามมาก เหมาะสำาหรบการไปพกผอนกบครอบครว เดกๆสามารถเลนนำาได เเละงยบสงบนำาใส ความสวยงามไมเเพทอนเลย

หมเกาะเกาะชางKoh Lao Ya Nai, Koh Lao Ya Klang Koh Lao Ya Nok - This three wonderful islands you can find about 3 km. South-west from Long beach on the east side of Koh Chang. Koh La Ya Nai is 900m. long and 300m. wide with amazingly beautiful beaches, crystal clear water and colourful coral reefs. The small settlements that exist are picturesque and charming. Koh Lao Ya Klang and Koh Lao Ya Nok are con-nected with a 40m. long wooden bridge. Only chartered boats to reach the island! There is accommodation but they have to be booked in advance. This is the perfect place for total serenity and tranquillity!

Ko Klum is a small and quiet island just 5 km. south of Koh Chang and a really good place for novice divers and snorkelling. The island was used as a bat-tlefield in 1941 between French troops and the Thai armed forces during the French colonization of Indochina. HTMS Thonburi was sunk in the battle. Today Thonburi is a dive spot, but only at certain times of the year when the vis-ibility is good. No accommodation on Koh Klum.

Koh Ngam reminds of the Phi-Phi Islands because of the similarity to the shape, with two islands and with bays and beau-tiful beaches. Between the islands you can find a sand dune which is between 25 and 50 m. wide depending on the tide. Koh Ngam is ideal for both families with children and other who seek tranquillity in a paradise setting. The water is usually crystal clear with nice white beaches. There is accommodation on Koh Ngam.

Koh Rang (Rung) A island west from Koh Maak. Small and not flat enough to be a buildable area of resorts and bungalows. Instead Koh Rang is known for the many birds nesting and turtles laying eggs here. Even the bats seem to thrive well here. Main attractions on the island are; the beautiful stone hills and the magnificent corals just outside Koh Rang. Koh Rang are especially popular among divers.

Koh Rayang a small private island located about 1 km. South from Koh Maak Beach

“Ao Ban Laem”. The island have one small resort with bungalows and you have to pay 30 Baht to entry. From holiday resort you can book a boat for about 100 Baht to get to the island. The Island is really beautiful but very small. There is only one good beach on the island. Perfect for a day trip!

Koh Wai is a small picturesque island a few kilometers south of Koh Chang. From Bang Bao the speedboat takes about

15 min. Koh Wai is well known for great snorkelling and rich marine life with lots of colourful fish and corals. The island has few quite small beaches but very nice and only a handful of people are permanent residents. The ideal island for serenity and alsoaffordable accommodation. Electric between 5pm - 9am and 12pm - 2pm.

Koh Kra Dan Private island just northeast from Koh Maak and is known for its long white sandy beach and wonderful coral reefs. The island is also home to a large number of deers, almost tame so you can get close to them.

Swaying coconut palms is bending over the beach and dipping their leaves in the warm sea so that passage sometimes have to be out in the warm clear water. That is a good description of Koh Maak. The little extra effort it takes to get to Koh Maak is worth every moment. The lifestyle is laid-back with beautiful resorts right on sea brow and lovely restaurants with cushions and low tables serves good authentic cooked food at affordable prices makes it even better.

Koh Maak lies about 25 miles south of Koh Chang and the slow-boat-trip takes just under two hours (speedboat about 40 minutes) from Bang Bao Pier. There are no ATM machines, 7-Eleven or boisterous disco thump at Maak. However, you are greeted by beautiful beaches with almost white velvety sand. Here they speaks proudly of the existence of electricity around the clock (from 2005). Before all power was cut after 22:00. Romantic you may say and yes, we agree!

Koh Wai is located approximately 20 min boat ride from Bang Bao, or 30 minutes from Kai Bae. Wai is a small island, about 3 km long and 2 km wide with unspoiled jungle and some very beautiful beaches on the southern part of the island. There are no villages, shops, roads or vehicles on the island. Electricity comes from generators and is avail-able on the larger beaches during certain hours (17:00 to 09:00 and 12:00 to 14:00) at Paradise Resort, Good Feeling, Koh Wai Pakarang Resort and Koh Wai Beach Resort. Each with its own dock and connected to each other through a very easy trail through the jungle. Try to find a private boat to take you to the neighboring beaches, ask the staff at your resort. If you walk, be sure to have plenty of time to get home before it gets dark! Although Wai is a small island, it is difficult, if not impossible to navigate in the jungle after dark!

Paradise Beach is the major beach. Right on the beach is a nice pontoon that is easy to access by wading and gets crowded quickly by all who want to top up their tan. The beach has fine sand, shallow water with nice corals which makes the beach a perfect spot for snorkeling. We feed a shoal of tiger fish with bread crumbs. Rapidly there where several hundred who surrounded us in their eagerness to get a bite.

Koh Rayang is a private island owned by a local Thai family. The island has an area of nearly 12,000 square meters of tropical natural landscape leading down to an incredibly beautyful white sandy beach. In the crystal clear water its easy ti thrive. Take the canoe around the island or snorkeling above the beautiful corals and colorful fish before you paddle back to Koh Maak. Up on the Hill is a viewpoint that gives you a wonderful panoramic view of Koh Rang which is well known for divers. Koh Kham - one of the most beautiful islands in Thailand! Sparkling white sandy beaches with incredibly clear turquoise waters. On the eastern side of the island you can wade almost 100 meters on a sandbank surrounded by dramatic black lava rocks jutting up from the ocean. This place is spellbinding and is often compared to the Maldives!

-If you are traveling from Koh Mak there is a speed-boat to Koh Kham daily, the first at 10.30 the second 13:30. Roundtrip 400 Baht including island entry and free drink (April 14). The return trip is 3 hours later, which is little too long time to spend on such a small island. Therefore many chose the more adventurous option, to rent a kayak. The distance from Koh Mak to Koh Kham is 1km and by kayak it takes about 20 minutes. Lots of beautiful corals, colorful fish and spiny sea urchins along the way. When you arrive at the beach, you have to pay 100 baht entrance fee, payable at the kiosk near the pier, which includes one beverage. Make sure to visit the island before the resort is completed as the island can be private with access only for resort guests.

Koh Kood is the paradise island about 30 km south of Koh Chang (pronounced even Koh Kut). The island is 22.5 km long and about 8 km wide and the second largest island of Koh Chang archipelago. The tempo is laid back and pleasant for those who want to relax. After 9pm there is not much to do.

The best beaches are on the west side of the island and they really are marvellous. There are still few tourists here and on the island there are some bungalows but no large hotels. Boat traffic to the island has been sparse since the island does not have many residents, about 1,500. Many of them are fishermen and lives on the eastern side of the island, in the fishing village of Ao Salat.

There is no bank, ATM or 7-Eleven on the island so you have to plan with cash before traveling to the island.The roads on the island are also bad but there is a concrete road from the west side of the small village of Ao Salat and also south to southeastern part that connects to a pier. There is a small hospital and a small beautiful school built in wood, as they did in the 1800s. The speed boat leaves Bang Bao Pier daily, starting around 09.30am (confirm times once on Koh Chang). The boat passes Koh Wai, Koh Maak and Koh Kood. Speed boat: Koh Chang-Koh Kood around 900 Baht. to Koh Maak 550 Baht. Book in advance to ensure seat on-board. Tickets include pickup and drop-off to your hotel.

ชายหาดทเกาะชางKlong Son Bay - Klong Son Beach also goes under the names Chang Noi Beach or Premwadee Beach. It is the first beach that you reach from the ferry location on the north-west side. The beach is about 1 km. long, crescent shaped and sheltered in a bay that is perfect for example kayaking. 1 km. from the main road.

White Sand Beach - The longest beach (2,2 km.) and also the most visited on Koh Chang. The northern part is ideal for walking, while the southern part is to some extent more rocky. One of the best beaches on Koh Chang with lots of cozy resorts, restaurants, massage places and vendors who wish to change your Baht against their goods. Shallow beach which makes it especially suitably for families with children.

Pearl Beach - Hat Kai Mook in Thai. A small beach which primarily consists of pebbles and corals resembling pearls, hence the name! A quiet and peace-ful place and good for snorkelling for the nearby coral reefs.

Chai Chet Cape & Klong Prao Beach An estuary runs up the in middle and di-vides the beach into two parts. The estuary itself is a nice place to visit with restau-rants and small nice resorts. Klong Prao Beach is a beautiful sandy beach lined with coconut trees and the village resembles to some extent a growing town. The fine sandy beach is also ideal for children because it is not too steep and without strong currents.Nice beach restaurants along the long beach.

Kai Bae Beach - A sandy beach with a lot of palm trees that create cooling shade. From being a sleepy area Kai Bae has developed with upscale resorts, small shops, supermarkets, bars, delicious restaurants and dive shops. A perfect beach to rent a kayak to get a different perspective to the beach and at the same time exploring the small islands outside. Even here families with smaller children thrive excellent. At low tide it is said that one can walk over to the small island Koh Man Nai (the first from viewpoint). No one told how tall you need to be ... :)

Lonely Beach - Tha Nam Beach was nicknamed Lonely Beach by the backpackers who come here for so-so 30 years ago. Today, the site has grown and you can not expect to be lonely anymore but the magical beach is still there. Resorts, restaurants, clubs, tattoo artists and travel agents are relentless. Prices on accommodation and restaurants is still lower than many other places on the island. The beach is a small cove with beautiful, fine white sand on the quiet northern end and a bit rockier in the south where the beach ends, Siam Hut.

Khong Kloi Beach - The last beach accessible by scooter and penultimate in southern Koh Chang (the last is Wai Cheak Beach that you need a boat to reach). Khong Kloi has grown strongly in recent years and has small cozy bungalows and lovely restaurants situated directly on the beach. Sunrise - SunsetTo watch the sunrise or sunset from any of the beaches on Koh Chang is often a colorful event. When the weather is clear the viewpoints are teeming with photographing people, all to document the spectacle, and it is beautiful, I can promise!


Fishing tripsKoh Chang has a rich fishing ground and most of the arranged trips leaves from Bang Bao. They are available to book at hotels and through travel agencies. Included in price is soft drinks, food, fishing gear and insurance - if a fish get the idea to bite your finger ... :)

Mountain BikingKoh Chang is not really the best place to ride a bike. The roads are narrow and it is difficult to

share the space with cars. The reward for those who still choose to ride a bike is the fantastic

nature. Important! Always wear a helmet, dont forget to drink water and be extra careful!

Paint ballOn the southern end of White Sand is a place where you can play paint ball. A fenced area is decorated and adapted for this. In the same area is also one of the island crocodile shows.

KayakingKayaks are available to rent at the

larger beaches and is a fantastic way to get a different perspective to the

island, its beaches and the small islands. Remember to protect your

skin from the sun - its strong. Wear a life jacket and just enjoy ...

Cooking classBring the art of cooking home. Peddling Thai food is not any rocket science. An open mind, smile on your face and the right ingredients are almost all you need. lephant trekkingI can not imagine a better place than Koh Chang for a ride on the elephant back. After a couple of hours in the jungle you make your way to the water hole for a swim and wash the elephants. An experience you will carry with you for a long time in life.

Golf. Already in September 2009, Cookies Golf Driving Range in Klong Son opened. For 100 baht, you get a bunch of golf balls and can borrow golf clubs. Not far from the driving range there is a newbuilt short hole course with nine holes (Siam Royal View). You pay 300 for 18 holes (2x9 holes) and 150THB. to rent clubs.

Shooting RangeAfter a few kilometers on the eastern side of the island you will reach the island’s shotting Range. Here you can shoot handguns, machine guns, 357 magnum and a variety of other weapons.

Kayaks are available to rent on the larger beaches and is a fantastic way to get a different perspective

to the island, its beaches and the small islands. Remember to protect your skin from the sun - its

strong. Wear a life jacket and just enjoy ... If you choose to paddle on the rear slot, you can rest without

your canoe partner knows about it ... :)

Jungle Trekking Koh Chang has a fantastic nature and are rich in wildlife. The vegetation of the rainforest in the

mountains have shaped many beautiful trails to get around on. From the top of the mountain at White Sand you have a fantastic panoramic view. But only for those who have the

strength, it is an effort to get all the way up. It is best if you hire a local guide, there are those who have not found their

way back and wandered around the jungle for days ... Up and doown to the top takes 6 hours and is demanding.

Crocodile ShowToday, there are two different shows to visit. One on the South White Sand Beach and Baan Chivit located in Klong Prao along the entrance road to Klong Plu Waterfall.

Bang Bao VillageA fishing village that has become a major tourist attraction. Beautiful sea-food restaurants, quaint small shops crammed between diving companies and travel agencies. Sacrifice some hours from the beach to visit Bang Bao, you will not regret it! Songthaews take you all the way and costs 50-150Thb./trip.

DIV INGSeveral breathtaking diving spots!For those who dare to leave Koh Changs secure embrace there are several paradise islands waiting, both for snorkelling and spectacular dive sites. Only 25 km. South of Koh Chang you can find Koh Maak (even Koh Mak). A place as close to paradise you can get. On the western side of the island there are a bunch of lovely places to dive. Another few more kilometers to the south, we are approaching Koh Kood (Koh Kut) and here revealed a number of nice places to look around under the surface. The natural resources and marine life makes Koh Changs archipelagic to one of the top diving destinations in Southeast Asia.

Most diving excursions take place from Bang Bao pier on the southwest side of the island. The excursions are designed for beginners and for those who already can dive and know what they ‘re up to, or think they know ... :)If you never tried diving before, a new fantastic world will reveal and Koh Chang will display another nice side of its beauty. Best time to dive is from December to March.

Dive sites - new wreck. Thonburi is an old Thai warship sunk by the French in a colonial dispute in the 1940s which now got good company of HTMS Chang. This was originally a US warship which was later taken over by the Thai military. After finish serving the 100 meter long ship was towed to a site just south-east of Koh Chang where it was sunk to be the subject for diving enthusiasts.

Koh Rang Pinnacles. One of the best dive sites in the area. A series of pinnacles, a coral reef at about 15 meter depth. The visibility is often good here and there is a greater range of marine species as parrot fish, barracuda and occasionally tuna. Depth: 5 - 30m. Visibility: 5 - 15m.

Hin Luk Bat. Many soft corals on this dive site. A number of “shelves” which is home to smaller reef organisms and crustaceans. A popular spot due to its closeness to Koh Chang. Depth: 5 - 20m. Visibility: 5 - 15m

Koh Kra. A small rocky islet and a ideal place for snorkelling and divers as the depth does not exceed 10 meters. Shallow coral gardens in the gentle slope that is often home to stingrays. Depth: 2 - 10m. Visibility: 5 - 10m.Koh Wai. The reef off the island drops quickly down to a full 20 meters. Lots of corals and brain corals and soft corals that also thrive in the depths. Rays that can be spotted on the sandy bottom. Depth : 5 - 20m. Visibility: 5 - 15m.

Nightlife

This is where the nightlife on Koh Chang once began and White Sand still got the iron grip of the nightlife on the island! Pubs and bars and discos are spread along the stripe of the beach as well as on the road a few meters away, which runs parallel.

Laid-back bars directly on the beach who offers nice view to the sound of lapping waves. When the sun dissapear the fire shows takes place, the best show is at Sabai bar which has recently undergone major renovation and received a new larger stage. The fire show is Sabai signature (one of the best in Thailand). In mean time you can listen to live music with commercial hits.

Usually the bars also feature pool table, other games and live sports on screen.

MINI PATTAYA In the south part of White Sand, before the hill, we find this bar area that of many locals called mini Pattaya.A large area with many small beer bars. All of them with usual high volume stereos. The most common word is “Hello, welcome”! The workers are usually girls, but there are exceptions! One or another surgical operation may be glimpsed. Full moon, half moon or dark moon party are held on the beach but party goes on even if there is no moon at all. iIn high season noisy parties takes place very day in different places and you can always find after hour places.

WATERFALLS

Several beautiful waterfalls to visit!The best time to visit waterfalls is from July to December. With a rented motorcycle or car its easy to reach the various waterfalls. You can also rent a “pick-up taxi“ songthaew to take you around if you dont want to drive by yourself.

Khiri Phet Waterfall is located about 2 km. from the south fishing village, Salak Phet and is a medium sized fall. It takes around 15 minutes walk to reach the waterfall from the parking lot and it has several levels. With a little effort you can climb up to the seventh level during the dry season. It is recommended to wear climbing shoes. Be extra cautious and check the flow of water, especially during the rainy season when the walking path gets wet and slippery.

Klong Nueng Waterfall is the highest waterfall on Koh Chang. It takes some challenging climbing to reach it but is definitely worth the effort. The chest-deep pool is perfect for a cool dip to cool off after 1 hour hike. There is no well marked footpath, its best to hire a local guide.

Entrance to Thaan Ma Yom Waterfall is behind the Marine National Park headquarters and you have to pay 200 Baht / person for adults and 100 Baht / child to visit the fall. Park your car at the main office for free or you can drive another 150 meters and pay 20 Baht. From there it is about 200 meters to walk along the river bank. It’s easy to reach the waterfall whish makes it one of the most popular.

Klong Nonsi Waterfall is located on the eastern side of Koh Chang near Dan Mai village. Follow the blue sign that takes you to a parking lot. Drop 10B. for motorbike or 30B. for car in the metal box. Free entry to the waterfall! You have to walk down a ladder and then up the river to reach the first fall. Another concrete staircase brings you to the upper level.

Klong Plu Waterfall is popular among foreign tourists because it is easy to reach from the west side. This is one of two waterfalls on the west side (Klong Prao). Entrance to the waterfall is 200 Baht / person. If you visit two waterfalls same day you only need to pay one time. To get to Klong Plu, you have to walk along a well marked trail about 20 minutes, about 700 meters. The natural pool is deep in the middle and allows visitors to dive from the cliffs.

Prao Thalay Waterfall Easy to reach from the southwestern part of the island. You need to cross the national park office and pay a fee to enter. Park the scooter / car, and after only a few minutes walk trough the jungle you reach the waterfall with a small natural pool. Perfect for a refreshing dip. In the area you can also visit the large lagoon resort where you live on boats of different sizes and models.

It has become controversial if or not ride on elephants. Some say that the elephants are treated poorly in connection with entertainment for tourists. A issue that receiving increasing attention and the organization World Animal Protection has recently campaigned to stop the elephant riding. It may be that some animals are treated badly by their mahouts and maybe there is a need for some follow-up efforts to increase understanding among Mahouts and owners to elephant camps to treat the animals better.

Anyway the Interest in elephant riding does not appear to decrease. Families with children gather with couples without children who all want to ride through densely grown jungle and later take a dip in a waterhole where they can play with the elephants and have them scrubbed. Its easy to see that the animals (and humans to) look to thrive big time. Now and then a water cascade from the elephants’ long trunk hits somebody in the face and everybody is laughing, the elephant to. For a while it looks like a challenge for a water fight, believe me, you will lose.

If you want to learn more about how to take care of elephants and learn to ride them, there are courses of several days where overnight stay at the camp is included. For us ordinary, a few hours on the elephant back is enough. Go for it now!

There are many beaches called White Sand Beach in Thailand but the most famous of them is probably the one on Koh Chang. It is the second beach from the ferry situation and the one most visitors end up on at their visit to the island. The beach is 2,2km long and has a sparkling white sand and usually a lovely clear water. The beach is also shallow which makes it suitable for most people, especially for those traveling with small children. Along the beach Rd. you can find lots of smaller shopping stalls, hotels & resorts, pharmacies, restaurants and travel agencies. Bars / discos are also mixed with massage places that all cry out for your attention.

It is easy to understand White Sands popularity. In daytime the visitors roll out your bath towel on the beach and a few times an hour they roll down into the water for a refreshing dip, that s the way life should be lived!

As lunchtime approaches it´s only a few feet to one of all the restaurants on the beach. Nobody needs to go hungry, every conceivable food is been served, Thai, European, pizza and burgers . . .

After a day at the beach, it is time to remove sand and salt from the body. A quick shower at the hotel, spray some smell good on your body and set off to see what the night life has to offer.

There are several restaurants directly on the beach who serving BBQ and fresh sea food. At Buffalo Bill you can put the knife in a bloody steak imported from Australia. Opposite from “the Buffalo” is Sabai bar with its beautiful beach location. Sabai Bar have the best fire show and it takes place 2 times every even-ing while you sip on your umbrella drink lying on cushions at low tables. Disco after 23:00. Further south (Walking Street) you can find ONE Nightclub and Jungle Queen. The Jungle Queen have live music and serves beer and cocktails, ONE Night club is the disco on the opposite side, two popular places!

Chai Chet Cape is the point where Klong Prao Beach starts. Heading out to the Cape, you can find some resorts where the first of them is Coconut Beach resort. Once out on the cape houses Chai Chet Resort with a beautiful location and views of the mountains and Klong Prao Beach. The Chai Chet area is also where most restaurants gathered in what once was Koh Chang’s shopping street, VJ Plaza. Today, it’s more of a restaurant plaza. Here you can find restaurants with pizza, Chinese food and with sea-food on the menu. A great place for those seeking new food acquaintances. On VJ Plaza you can also find the island’s perhaps best Mini Mart (at the entrance, to left). They have an incredible selection of different goods!

Along the beach there are a lot of resorts that set their tables for the evening buffet. Choose between fish and seafood and BBQ scewers with baked potato. Here you can enjoy your dinner while the sun slowly falls down behind the horizon, often as a colourful spectacle.

In daytime you can roll out your bath towel on the beach or take place in one of the sun chairs at the hotel pool. With or without a book, in the shade or in the sun, the choice is yours! Even if you are in the shade, the heat will initiate a cooling dip. The beach is shallow so you need to walk a few meters to bring down your body below the surface. Its also one of the reasons that families with children thrive here and those who for some reason do not like deep water.

Further south in Klong Prao is revealed more restaurants, cafes and resorts and diving companies. One of the diving companies is Scandinavian Dive Center. They arrange diving trips for both beginners and those with experience. Around the Klong Prao temple you find a bakery that serves breakfast sandwiches out of the ordinary! Tourist police is on the other side of the street. Continue a few hundred meters and you will find Cheap Thrills, before Klong Prao Plaza. Live music and also guest house!

The beaches on Koh Chang’s west coast is less affected by modern civilization, the further south you get. South from luxury but relatively undeveloped Klong Prao Beach you can find the beautiful Kai Bae Beach which is situated in a 2.5 km. bay with fine white sand, clear water and a large number of resorts with bungalows located directly on the beach front.

Here is no shortage of either dining or lodging. There are a large number of hotels which are all charming and with Thai hospitality. The restaurants are many and primarily serves delicacies from the sea, but there are also restaurants with western food on the menu, pizza, India food, pasta, burgers and meatballs. Even if you are fond of meatballs and pasta the seafood dishes served at Kai Bae’s delicious restaurants is highly recommended! Freshly grilled fish and prawns in Kai Bae restaurants is not the same as a bag of frozen shrimps in the freezer at home!

The number of hotels and shops in the area have grown large in recent years, which has meant that large parts of the infrastructure has not kept up with. There are some night clubs, bars and shops in the area which made the road narrow in many places. Meeting with cars and other vehicles is done with some risk.

Kai Bae Beach has the advantage of being close to some smaller neighbouring islands making it an wonderful place to rent a kayak and explore the islands and also gain a different perspective to the beaches. At low tide, it is said that you can wade out to Koh Man Nai, the first small island that you see from Kai Bae view point, it was not told how tall you need to be:)

A place where the whole family thrives, even with smaller children. The night life with restaurants and lounge bars does that even younger travelers do not feel alienated.

Koh Chang was discovered by back-packers in the 70 ‘s and they primarily came to Tam Nam Beach which they subsequently renamed to the Lonely Beach. They discovered the island’s charm and was invited by locals to stay for free, sometimes they also got food without having to pay. In the early 90’s it was still possible to stay here for around 50 Baht / night in a small bungalow on the beach, a mecca for backpackers worldwide. Much has happened since then! New resorts, restaurants and bars have been added. Those who visited the place ten years ago will hardly recognize it, but the wonderful beach is still the same!

The fine 1km sandy beach you can find where Siam Beach Resort and Siam Hut are located. Siam Hut often organizes party with hired DJs who play music as dance-trance-house as high as possible. Buckets and dancing on the beach are common, often until the sun comes up and then sleep for a few hours on the beach, in the shade of palm trees, partyyyyy.

Many of the visitors to Lonely Beach considered it as the best beach to stay if you were a real back-packer. It’s still cheap, lodging and meals at restaurants are cheaper than other beaches on the island. Nowadays, you can not expect to be “lonely“ on the beach and many of the easy accommodation has been turned into luxury resorts. But the stunning beach is still there. The northern part of the beach is considered one of the island’s best and has powdery white sand while the southern part consists of some stone. The beach is about 1 kilometer long, shallow which makes it suitable even for families with small children and for those who is scary of deep water for some reason.

If you continue up the road to the south you will reach the central part of Lonely Beach with lots of cozy guesthouses, small bars & restaurants, mini-marts and tattoo...

. . . artists where visitors get the latest design inked on different parts of the body. The cozy restau-rants often have live music to set the mood even higher.

Restaurants: There are plenty of restaurants with vari-ous food. Pad Thai for 40B. or more sophisticated restaurants at the bigger resorts. Choose if your dinner should be consumed by the sea or in the “town”. Kebab house is popular in the wee hours.

Dance/chill: Q-Bar, located up on the hill. Good music, grate food and nice atmosphere. Beers and mixedcocktails.

Siam Hut: Dancing on the beach, bucket- drinks and loud music. Cheap accommodation.

Ting Tong Bar & Scandal Bar is two popular places for the young crowd. Loud music, bucket-drinks and a generally noisy atmosphere, in Soi Thian 1.

Food / drinks: Margaritaville. Swedes who runs the restaurant / bar / bungalow. Their Swedish meatballs and hamburger are super delicious.

Places to stay: Magic Garden. A popular place amongst backpackers. Lovely bungalows and com-fortable lounge to chill in.Fish House. Restaurant/Bar/guest house in a wonder-ful mix.

Tattoo: If you thought it through properly, there is a plethora of tattoo shops on Koh Chang and many of them you can find in Lonely Beach. Tattoo machines runs hot during high season and visitors are queued. The prices are a fraction of what we are used to from home.

A word of advice! Don´t tattoo names of girlfriend or boyfriend! :)

Bailan Beach also known as Bailan Bay lies a few hundred meters from where Lonely beach ends. 700 meters to be exact. The nearby is also the only parable between them. On Bailan reigns calm ! The people who comes here do it mainly for the serenity. The nearby to Lonely also makes it possible to walk between the two towns, although if you do the roads are narrow and traffic is “different” and that they drive on the “wrong” side of what you might be used to. If you decide to walk evening- night time you may not need a reflective vest but you shore need a flashlight and be were of oncoming traffic. There is stories of those who get tired of high music level and intensity of partying on Lonely, after a couple sleepless nights change location to a quiet bungalow on Bailan to recuperate. Hey, if its party, party it is ! :)

Accommodation: The resorts at Bailan are affordable. You can choose between fan or AC. The price starting around 500B. and up depending on the season. There are also some awesome resorts here if you feel you want to upgrade from your windswept bamboo hut. Mercure is one place with many stars but still affordable rooms, from 2,400B. (when we checked in late November 2013). Another place you may not miss is the “Happy Turtle“. Operated by a Swede and his Thai wife. Bungalows, good Thai food and colourful umbrella drinks. They also offer Thai cooking classes.

The Beach: Bailan Beach is not for long distance runners. It extends only a couple hundred meters but a nice place to top up your tan. The hotel Mercure as placed fine sand on the beach and looks after it as their own, shared with White house Resort and the “Lisca Beach”, beach café and restaurant. They serves Italian dishes and even pizza while lounge music flows from the speakers. Although massage.

To Do: Swimming, sunbathing , reading books or just doing nothing at all. If you get tired of beach life you can visit the neighbour up on the hill, Tree Top Adventure. For 995B. you can throw yourself between the treetops at 20 different stations. In some places it is 20 m. above the ground, yeaaaah....

Bang Bao Village in the southwest of Koh Chang has a 700 m. long pier built on stilts. Along the pier you can find sea-food restaurants and small guest house mixed with cozy small shops selling souvenirs and some local handicrafts. At the end of the pier a white-painted lighthouse raises. It is also from Bang Bao most of the boats to nearby islands depart. Most diving companies also have their dive boats moored along the pier and depart early in the morning to various destinations. With divers or those who just want to bob on the surface with snorkel and mask. Day trips, for several days, weeks or years, the choice is yours.

Book your excursions at any of all travel agents on the island or directly at the hotel where you are staying. Most trips are made early in the morning. If you do not care about diving or boat trips you may instead stroll along the pier in the small shops and maybe slip into any of all sea-food restaurants serving freshly caught seafood. There are other dishes to order for those who for some reason do not like fish! The food is eaten on the terrace, built on stilts over the water with a nice view.

Bang Bao a fishing village is still largely dependent on fishing which has also affected the entire village. The pier, standing in a sheltered bay, has slowly and steadily increased. It recently received new railings almost all the way out to the lighthouse and at the same time been freshly painted. The walkway that leads between shops and restaurants have been covered with a roof so that they can receive visitors even if it should rain. Bang Baos popularity has grown in recent years. One reason is the picturesque location in a beautiful bay, another is that most boat trips to other islands in the Koh Chang archipelago and also the diving excursions departs from here. Moreover, it is said that the fresh fish and seafood served in restaurants here belong to Thailand’s most tasty.-What to do here? Visit the sea-food restaurants, stroll along the pier and the cozy small shops and photograph the lighthouse, thats it!

If you are traveling south on the west side, the beaches become smaller and more cozy the further south you get. One of them, the second last beach, Klong Kloi Beach stretches all the way to Koh Chang Grand Lagoona where you can stay on boats. The largest of them reminds of a large cruise ship, but not luxurious then! The resort is located on the National Park area and if youre not a customer to the resort you have to pay entrance fee (200 Thb.) to get in here. Here youll also will find the smaller Khiri Phet Waterfall. Don’t forget your camera and swimwear for a cool dip in the natural pol under the waterfall.

There are small and more basic resorts in the beginning of the beach, from the West and becomes more luxurious the further east you travel. Chivapuri is one of the more luxurious while Yu-Yu Golden Beach is one of the easier the resorts with accommodation for a few hundred baht / day. The beach stretches for about 800 meters in length and is perfect for morning and afternoon walks.
