Sublime Transparency

The Italian Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010 represents a proposal for better city with cutting-edge green technology application including a newly developed transparent cement that gives the inside of the building a natural daylight glow within, and a visibly evening translucence outside.

“Design doesn’t necessarily come from history, but history, our roots, or what we are, the way we live, our language; they all come from one year to another. It is transition. Your city is distinctive from the ones in Europe as each is a result of an accumulation of 2,000-3,000 years heritage where all the signs are there. And if you excavate, you will find everything. You will see it all around. And we are going on, adding another layer, layer after layer.” A conversation we had with Mario Bellini, a world-renowned architect, rattled in my head as we toured the Italian Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo 2010 where the Italian history appears to be unfolding, page by page, until the final chapter about the future is revealed... The pavilion covers an area of over 6,000 square metres and is 20 metres high, making it the second largest structure at the Expo 2010 after the courtly China Pavilion. Inside it is divided into sections of different dimensions, connected by a public square which serves as a circulation grid for outlying areas and arranged under the theme of ‘City of Man’. Towering over Zone C of the Expo Park, the rectangular building comprises 20 functional modules which represent the 20 regions of Italy. One of its highlights is the use of an innovative material known as ‘transparent cement’, a brand-new product that was officially launched here for the first time. On display are some of Italian latest innovations such as a cement paint that cleans the air by eating smog. The participation of Italy in the Shanghai Expo could indeed be said to represent an ensemble of the best that the country’s small and big businesses, universities, research centers, and science and technology parks have to offer. Before the first stone was laid to construct Italy’s Pavilion on 8 May 2009, the design and the building teams met with Chinese officials several times to assure the host country of their decision to use transparent cement, a ground-breaking material, that very few people had heard of, let alone work with. The introduction of any new material usually brings with it a new set of challenges. Sometimes it’s a building restriction on site that has to be complied with, other times it’s a break through feature of the new product itself that raises a few eyebrows. In this case, the transparency of the material allows people on the outside to get a glimpse of the activities and movements behind what appears to be a solid concrete wall. It is this techni- cality that the Italian teams had to discuss in detail with the Chinese officials to ensure proper under standing by all concerned. Italian architect Giampaolo Imbrighi who collaborated with Italcementi Group to develop the material said he chose a neutral tone for the pavilion, a typical grey colour of cement, to convey a

sense of opaqueness and solidity. But this is illusion from lighting effect. The public will be surprised when what they believe to be a solid mass turns increasingly transparent as natural conditions change during the day, revealing the enclosed areas and miraculously transforming the heavy structure into one of lightness! Back in the 1980s and the 1990s, a number of studies were carried out to ascertain the possibility of using recycled materials and industrial by-products as raw materials for cement production. Imbrighi was involved in many of the earlier efforts before landing himself a holy grail, to design the Italian Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 where a unique structure was certainly needed. At the start of the project, Imbrighi wanted to underline the importance of energy efficiency and envisaged an architecture that co-exists harmoniously with living things. The idea evolved into a structure that can be entirely pulled down and reassembled elsewhere, followed by a desire to bring in some of natural light to make the design outcome more astonishing. This led to the production of 3,744 transparent concrete panels of the size 500x1000x50 mm for the pavilion (including the so-called ‘semi-transparent’ ones, characterized by a lower degree of transparency due to architectural requirements). Transparent concrete panels are a result of an innovative admixtures design of 189 tons of dry ready-mixed concrete. The excellent flow properties of the mix

contributes to i.light® transparent concrete panels which covers a total surface area of 1,887 m² or approxi- mately 40 percent of the entire pavilion surface. Another key person in the successful execution of the Italian Pavilion is Enrico Borgarello, Director of Research & Development and Laboratories in the Italcementi Group, who introduced an ingenuous solution to the architectural demand for transparency. It is he who made the architect’s dream come true. The first experiments for the right technology were launched in Italcementi Group’s laboratories under Borgarello leadership in 2008, leading to the identification of a valid alternative to pre-existing ‘transparent cement’ which were difficult to apply on an industrial scale. The researchers later identified the right thermoplastic polymer to be pre-inserted into the product through special technology developed by the group. The transparent cement made from plastic resins is much cheaper than the one made from optical fibres, making it possible to produce the new material in large numbers. Moreover, the light captured is gentler, since the resins provide a wider angle for light-scattering than optical fibres. It is also less fragile and offers much higher strength and better durability. Today we tend to focus on casual ways to conserve energy and protect our ecology. Using fabric bags, cutting

fewer trees and destroying fewer mountains are well and good. Nevertheless, our effort to develop our global community must go on and be guided by the principle of sustainability to ensure well-being and quality of life. Based on the idea of producing the material that offers lesser energy consumption in itsself, Italcementi Group believes that Green Concept must come from the creation of a better innovation that can replace existing materials. It is the significant force that enable the global cement industry to solve global warming crisis, leading to the genuine energy saving. This is the reason why Italcementi Group put a lot of investment on R&D for the innovation of “transparent cement”.By transforming a solid mass into something light, the experiment has paved the way for many more inspiring architecture in the future. From an environmental standpoint, the light-transmitting property of the concrete helps maximize energy savings, reduce pollution and lower heat gain. These achievements are the result of long and hard work in R&D and they resemble the history of our civilization in that no evolution happens overnight. Watching the long shadows of people moving past beams of lights and rows of exhibits inside the pavilion, one cannot help but think of Mario Bellini’s words. “This is culture, material culture and spiritual culture...”

When you got this commission to design the Italian Pavilion in the Shanghai Expo 2010, What did you plan to achieve as an architect? I was communicated by the Italian Government Commissioner to our win- ning of this memorable international competition in the summer of 2008. I think, simply, the true reason by which I got win was there on the architectural, unique but natural, scheme that I had done: the symbiosis. It was like a global guide during all phase of the project and the realization as result, too. Why did you choose transparent cement as one of the key materials? We have one marvelous historical back- ground of the “lime” called by the Roman like a betunium. It was usually used to a foundation and a wall, but the idea was to set it free from a dogmatic complex of the compression gave by itself: the heaviness. Therefore, I wanted integrate it in a sort of new contemporary material. Could you reveal your working process with Italcementi Group in developing this project? It is necessary to spend energy for a many of invention process, naturally, to lead it to victory it shall be necessary a good collaboration with good team work, too. A premature idea was been exposed to a series of prove to confirm its feasibility step by step to arrive an optimal conclusion for its realization. It was been required a combination of the competitiveness of the various fields of science. A collaboration with Italcementi’s laboratory was fundamental for me to do that and their contributions were very precious to materialize this new product called by us like a “transparent cement”, and then named by them like a registered product: “i.light®”.

How do you describe this 2010 Italian Pavilion (simple, elegant, monumental…)? I think, the architecture is an unique synthesis in which materialize a form like a result, because a final architec- tural form doesn’t be known by nobody to the reason of a continuous evolution of the project during the working pro gress process and so, one’s adjective impression to the realized Pavilion will be various, because of a background culture is very different one and another, so I am. Be simple, elegant and monumental is not so important for me, but it was very important to materialize every component extending a capacity of all of materials with which there were been created by precise intention of the project. Apart from this project, What’re your recent designs? I would like to list up simply my works under here: The new buildings as: the project for the Station “Rome” in the Metropolitan of Moscow (Russia); the Carriage Museum in the Presidential Compound Castelporziano, Rome; Quaestorship and new Police Offices and Housing in Sassari; the New Judicial City in Latina; these buildings were all realized.The numerous rehabilitation projects or restoration including: the headquarters of the Offices of the Prime Minister; the historical Palazzo della Consulta, seat of the Constitutional Court; the FAO Headquarters in Rome; the Ministry of Productive Activities; the Historic Complex of San Michele Ripa; the “Urban Trident” in the historical center of Rome; these works were all realized as well. Your overall opinion about Shanghai Expo 2010? It is one of a great international event. A country that obtained this opportunity must be happy, because it may be one demonstration match of their own country, above all its formidable economic force in this moment. The people who participates in this event, being in own county, will able to compare his/her existential question with the world; I think at least that is very exciting experience.Anyway, I think the important thing is an usual thing: go ahead at all times.

เจยมพาวโล อมบรก จบการศกษาดานสถาปตยกรรมจาก La Sapienza University of Rome ในป 1975 โดยไดปรญญาพเศษในดาน “Study and Restoration of Monu- ments” ท Rome University จากนนรวมทมวจยของคณะสถาปตยตงแตป 1972-1973 ในป 1991 นอกจากอมบรกจะเปนอาจารยสอนวชา Building Materials Technology และปรญญาโทในวชา Bioecological Archi- tecture and Environment Bearable Technology จนถงปจจบน เขายงเปนอาจารย

Graduated in 1972 on Architecture at La Sapienza University of Rome, Giampaolo Imbrighi received the biennial post-lauream Specialization Diploma on “Study and Restoration of Monuments at Rome University. Between 1972-73, he was a staff researcher at the Faculty of Architecture and from 1991, he is a professor at the course of Building Materials Technology, and also teaches postgraduate courses on Bio ecological Architecture and

Environment Bearable Technology. He is still at the University of Rome, where is now a professor of Construc- tion Systems Design. Imbrighi has executed numerous plans, feasibility studies, competitions, projects, works supervisions, evaluations and tests in the area of planning, transport and mobility, civil and public works and adjustments, rearrangements, particulary on historical city centers.

Can you share with us your inspiration for creating ‘transparent cement’? We developed this innovative material to meet the needs of the designers of a building that would represent Italy (at the Shanghai Expo 2010). Italcementi supported the development by collabo- rating with architect Giampaolo Imbrighi who wanted to build the pavilion with special light effect on cement. As an expert in this field, Italcementi took the architectural requirements for transparency and light effects as the basis for our work; we started from the pavilion and its design concept. Transparent cement was developed by our researchers exclusively for the construction of the Italian Pavilion and this pavilion is the first real application of the product. The distinctive characteristic of the product is its transparency which is obtained by a good combination of the cement and the polymer.Of course, cement is in itself not translucent. But our innovative technology makes it possible to achieve a perfect mix that allows the resins to capture and transmit light. For us, transparent cement is our dream, our inspiration to do something extra ordinary. I envisage its application in all kinds of projects. Our innovative approach is backed by strong R&D teams. We have more than one hundred people involving in a research. For transparent cement, there were 10 researchers working full time for a whole year trying to find the perfect solution. Our determination means encouraging flexible and open dialogue between teams and with the architect.

In this case, Prof. Imbrighi worked very closely with our research center to find the best solution for the pavilion. Of course we are open to collaborating with other architects and experimenting with other approaches in the future. What are the main uses you envisage for ‘transparent cement’? What kind of projects? Shopping malls and museums, I think. In most cases, people who do these kinds of projects will contact us. At the moment, most of them are department stores. This material can assure same strength as normal cement with some light. Using this kind of material will help save electricity required for lighting. Transparent cement is also ideal for museums because it adds variety to the illumination inside the building, the kind of luminous effects that people in the museum business like. This material allows light to enter but it doesn’t focus it on any particular object. I want to know the differences between normal cement and your new product. There is no difference in terms of strength and durability between transparent cement panels we used for building the Italian Pavilion and normal concrete in the long run, because polymer technology has become so advanced that we now have good and stable compounds that can stand long-term UV exposure. We have designed the right concrete mixture that controls the rate of shrinkage so that its long-term durability and strength is assured. We have not encountered any problems in any research work we did. Why did you choose resins as transparent meterial instead of glass or glass blocks? In our research, we ran many tests before we decided to choose this material because we have to combine fluidity of our cement with the material that was strong enough. Right now, resins provide the best answer. Glass is too brittle. Cement is a very simple material in terms of its chemical composition but when combined with resins, it works much better.

Enrico Borgarello graduated in Chemistry at the University of Torino. From 1980 up to 1986 he was Research Associate in EPFL (École Politéchnique Fédérale de Lausanne) and University of Montreal working on the application of photocatalysis to the production of hydrogen from water and to the degradation of pollutants in water.

During his 19-years career in Eni, he was also appointed Senior Scientist. Since 2005 he covers the position of Director of Research & Development and Laboratories in the Italcementi Group Technical Center (CTG). In January 2010 Enrico Borgarello was appointed as Director of the newly formed Innovation Department.

From a designer’s perspective, how’s important of new material innovation? It’s very important especially with the innovation and development in the design field. Since the early periods, material innovations such as rock, concrete, steel or glass plates created new forms of architectural design. For example, an architectural building in the past had short column spans, which limited the design and function of the building. The innovation of concrete, steel, and glass plate brought the new look of architectural design. Briefly, these innovations were open to unlimited possibilities. In which way does transparent cement contribute to contemporary architecture? From my point of view, I think natural resources seem to be less and less due to the growth of world population. Particularly with energy resources, natural resources have been continuously consumed. We then need to realize this fact. Green design is now involved in architectural design. Architect and designer are required to be more concerned about this issue of how to carefully use natural resources. Transparent cement is another interesting choice that can be applied to a building surface. Its character allows light to seep through a building. And it is even more interesting that it could resist the heat coming inside the building. What do you think of the movement nowadays of sustainability and green design? The situation of green design and sustainable design has continuously become crucial subjects. Architects and designers should try to understand these practices. A lot of project owners also realize its significance, which they often consider part of the design criteria. In the end, the result of green design will eventually benefit the project owners (ex. energy saving that also leads to saving building expenses and gives a good image).

What do you think of the Italian Pavilion in the World Expo this year? The Italian Pavilion in the World Expo this year appears to be very interesting. The pavilion captures a lot of outstanding subjects, such as fashion, music, wine, design and history. All of them are interestingly presented.The interior space, created from cutting the building’s mass, is complicated and exciting at the same time. Its surface is made from transparent cement and can create a good effect both in day and night time. While sunlight shines through during the day, the night time will also create light and shadow from outside. From a designer’s perspective, what is an important new material innovation? Innovation of material is very important for design, especially with its technology to make it more strong and durable. It also improves the quality of building as one has seen in its self-cleaning surface. This innovation can lead to a new look in architectural design. There are many architectures that have visual impact from surface materials. If materials are continuously developed, then architects can adopt this specialty into the visual concept of each building. In which way does transparent cement contribute to contemporary architecture? Transparent cement is an interesting innovation, especially with the lighting effect shining through this material in each period. For the Italian Pavilion, it’s an exploration of using this material. It will be great if the material is developed on a commercial scale. It also offers alternatives with different block’s size and colour to architects and designers, which is very interesting. What do you think of the movement nowadays of sustainability and green design? Green Design is not a trend because its beginning does not involve with style, but an environmental situation that has happened in our world. So, Green Design is a long-term practice. It’s such a crucial role for architects that need to be concerned about sustainable design. We don’t have any other choices. However, the term ‘green’ has various issues involved such as interpretation, method and cost. Architect must know how to adopt the right methods that fit to each project (and budget). It can be fundamental in design to give the right response to the environment. Material selection is also required at this stage to prevent heat coming to the building or even support more complex building system such as energy recycle.

คณรสกอยางไรกบ Italian Pavilion ในงาน World Expo ปน? เปน pavilion ทนาสนใจชนหนง ใน expo 2010 นอกเหนอจากการนำนวตกรรมปนซเมนตโปรงแสงมาใชใน mass อาคารแลว แนวความคดในการ ออกแบบกมความนาสนใจโดยนำมาจากเกม “pick-up-sticks” หรอ ‘Shanghai game” สะทอน ถงความซบซอนของวฒนธรรมแตละภมภาคทมาอย รวมกนในประเทศอตาล รบรไดจาก plan, sections, mass-form และ space ทถกออกแบบไว ในมมมองของนกออกแบบ นวตกรรมของการพฒนาวสดใหมมความสำคญ อยางไร? นวตกรรมของการพฒนาวสดใหมมความสำคญสำหรบสถาปตยกรรมเสมอ นวตกรรมเปนสวนหนงทสะทอนถงวฒนธรรมและจดเดนในสงคมภาคอตสาหกรรมของภมภาคนนๆ ทำใหแตละประเทศแตละภมภาคจะมนวตกรรมของ การพฒนาวสดทแสดงถง character ของ architecture ทมความเปนตวตน (identity) สำหรบภมภาคนนๆ คณคดวาปนซเมนตโปรงแสง มสวนพฒนางาน สถาปตยกรรมยคใหมอยางไร? เปนอกแนวทางหนงใน การแสดงความสามารถของวสดปนซเมนตทมลกษณะพเศษ dual characters (solid but transparent) แขงแกรงและโปรงแสง เปนการพฒนาวสดทเคยถกรบรวาม คณลกษณะแบบ solid และ opaque (แขงแกรงและทบแสง) ใหมคณสมบตใหมคอความโปรงแสงโดย ยงคงความแขงแกรงอย โดยลกษณะของปนซเมนตโปรงแสงนาจะเหมาะกบการใชรวมกบ งานทตองแสดงพนผวคอนกรตเปลอย โดยเฉพาะกบงานสถาปตยกรรมทตองการแสดงถง ศกยภาพของความเปน solid หรอ masculine แต transparent ทควบคมคณภาพแสงไดเชน museum คณมความ คดเหนอยางไรเกยวกบสถานการณของ green design และการออกแบบเชงยงยน? เหนดวยอยางยงกบ การออกแบบเชงยงยนและgreen design เปนสงทสถาปนกตองคำนงถง มลกคาบางรายทใหความสนใจในเรองนเปนพเศษเลยไดมโอกาสทำงานรวมกบ LEED consultant หลายทาน ทำใหไดรบความรใหมๆทนำมาใชกบการออกแบบสถาปตยกรรมชนอนๆ ดวย

What do you think of the Italian Pavilion in the World Expo this year? It’s such an interesting pavilion in World Expo 2010. Not only the innovation of transparent cement, that is outstand ingly adopted in this project, the design concept that refers to a ‘pick-up-sticks’ game (Shanghai game) is also attractive. The concept reflects cultural dimensions in each region that is gathered and presented in the Italian Pavilion. It’s also presented through plans, section, mass-form and spaces that are well designed. From a designer’s perspective, what is an important new material innovation? Material innovation is always important factor in architectural field. It is a part of cultural reflection and a social feature in the industrial sector of one’s region. This innovation also leads to the proud of each country, which brings about the identity of the architecture in that region. In which way does transparent cement contribute to contemporary architecture? Transparent cement contains dual characters that are solid and transparent at the same time. The material is developed with a solid and opaque quality. This transparent cement should fit for a project that wants to show the building’s surface. Using this material in an architectural project, such as museum, can also communicate the sense of solidness, or masculinity and provides a good condition of light control. What do you think of the movement nowadays of sustainability and green design? I strongly agree that architects should consider sustainable and green design in their works. Some of my clients are interested in these subjects, thus I have had a chance to work with LEED consul- tants. Then, I could adopt these new ideas to work with other architectural projects as well.

What do you think of the Italian Pavilion in the World Expo this year? Compared to other pavilions, the Italian Pavilion was not that outstanding in terms of architectural form or its concept of exhibition. The most challenging part though, was using transparent cement for the pavilion. That definitely created a unique outcome. From a designer’s perspective, what is an important new material innovation? Construction materials are crucial factors in any architectural project. Their existence directly influences form and space. As one may see, there are huge changes in architectural form or movement these days from material innovations, and these increase the potential as well as the quality for each building. In which way does transparent cement contribute to contemporary architecture? Bringing natural light into a building is always an important subject for archi- tecture. Transparent cement is a very interesting material for giving an alter- nation of sophisticatedly introducing natural light into the building. Based on construction and building regulations in Thailand, there’s a required distance from the borderline of land to create a void that led natural light into the building. Transparent cement should solve the problem of buildings that are too close to the borderline of land to create a window void, which can bring natural light into the building. What do you think of the movement nowadays of sustainability and green design? The practice of green design appears not to be superficial, but is sometimes used a bit like propaganda. The sustaina- bility of natural resource usage must be a crucial subject for every design area. Green design is not something new. However, the movement of green design makes consumers and clients more aware of this issue, which is eventually a good start for environmental preservation.

Italian Pavilion ในงาน Expo ปนอาจจะไมไดโดด-เดนในเรองรปทรงสถาปตยกรรม หรอแนวคดในการจดแสดง เมอเทยบกบ Pavilion บางหลง แตการใชวสดกอสรางททาทายอยาง transparent cement ทำใหอาคารนาสนใจในมมมองทแตกตาง ในมมมองของนกออกแบบ นวตกรรมของการพฒนาวสดใหมมความสำคญ อยางไร? วสดกอสรางเปนปจจยสำคญในการสรางรปแบบของสถาปตยกรรม ไมวาจะในดานรปทรง (form) หรอ สเปซ (space) เหนไดจากการเปลยนแปลงใหญๆ ของสถาปตยกรรมมนจะเกดจากการคนพบวสด หรอการกอสรางในรปแบบใหม ทเพมศกยภาพและคณภาพในดานตางๆ ใหกบอาคาร คณคดวาปนซเมนตโปรงแสง มสวนพฒนางาน สถาปตยกรรมยคใหมอยางไร? การนำแสงเขามาในพนทภายในของอาคารในวธการตางๆ กนนน เปนประเดนสำคญของสถาปตย- กรรมตลอดเวลา transparent cement เปนปนซเมนตใหมทนาสนใจมาก ในการสรางทางเลอกของการนำแสงเขามาสพนทภายในอาคาร แบบมะลงเมลอง นอกจากนในกรอบของกฎหมายอาคารของประเทศไทย ทอาคารตองถอยรนจากแนวเขตทดนตามระยะทกำหนดจงจะสามารถเปดชองเปดทรบแสงเขามาในอาคารได transparent cement นนจรงๆ แลวเปนผนงทบเมอมองจากภายนอก จงนาจะสามารถแกไขปญหาการสรางอาคารใกลแนวเขตทดนเกนกวาทจะเปดชองเปดทเปนกระจกได แตสามารถมแสงเขามาในอาคารได และทดแทนวสด “กระจก” ไดด คณมความคดเหน อยางไรเกยวกบสถานการณของ green design และการออกแบบเชงยงยน? แนวโนมของ green design นนในบางครงถกใชอยางผวเผน และเปนการประชาสมพนธมากกวาการกระทำจรง การคำนงถงความยงยนในการใชทรพยากรธรรมชาตนนควรเปนประเดนสำคญของการออกแบบอยแลว ไมวาในสาขาใดๆ แนวโนมของ green design ไมใชเรองใหม แตอยางไรกตามการมกระแสของ green design ทำใหผบรโภคและลกคาตระหนกถงประเดนนมากขน ซงเปนผลดตอสภาพแวดลอมโดยรวม และอยากใหผผลตคำนงถงการพฒนาผลตภณฑขน “ทดแทน” วสดเดมทคำนงถงการทำลายความยงยนของสภาพแวดลอมทดของธรรมชาตใหนอยลงมากกวา
