At the Pink Pearl Gala on March 20, the North Fork Breast Health Coalition recognized gastroenterologist Dr. Joseph M. Duva with the first Pink Pearl Spirit Award. Despite snow on the first evening of spring, the party started on schedule with hors d'oeuvres and cocktails followed by dinner, awards and dancing until 10 PM in the ballroom at East Wind. About 180 people enjoyed the inaugural event.

Event Chair Melanie McEvoy estimated that the event raised nearly $50,000 through tickets, raffles and sponsorship. Eastern Long Island Hematology Oncology was a Pearl Sponsor. With offices in Riverhead and Southampton, the practice includes Doctors Louis J. Avvento, Alexander Zuhoski and Deepali Sharma. Platinum sponsors included the Seafield Center, at the request of Anita Young, and Tanger Outlets, represented by Janine Nebons, who accepted the Pink Pearl Corporate Leadership Award.

The gala was named for Pearl Philindas, past president of the North Fork Breast Health Coalition, who passed away last year. She was honored posthumously with the first Pink

Pearl Community Service Award. Her daughter, Conny Morazan, accepted the award on her behalf. Many of the gala guests not only wore the traditional pink, but also donned necklaces of pink pearls in Pearl’s honor.

Ann Cotton-DeGrasse and Antonio DeGrasse founded the North Fork Breast Health Coalition in 1998. Currently led

by Susan Ruffini, the all-volunteer, non-profit organization supports local breast-cancer patients with programs such as the Helping Hand grants. Funds raised by the gala will also allow the group to continue to provide free services such as yoga, massage therapy, reflexology and support groups to breast-cancer patients and survivors.

For more information about the North Fork Breast Health Coalition and the services that the organization provides to breast-cancer patients and survivors who reside (or are being treated by doctors) in the North Fork area, call the coalition office in Riverhead at 631-208-8889 or visit www.northforkbreasthealth.org.

Pink Pearl Gala(Right) Enjoying the party are Dr. Avvento of ELIHO and Angela Avvento. Behind them are Neal Cichanowicz and Nurse Practitioner Cindy Cichanowicz with Lynn Kay Winters, practice administrator. (Left) The North Fork Breast Health Coalition honored Doctor Joseph M. Duva, a Riverhead gastroenterologist, with the first Pink Pearl Spirit Award. His wife, Barbara Duva, attended the gala as well.

today’s birthdayby Miles X. Logan

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) A role in the play you were born for comes this week. Your director may be wearing a fright wig, but look beyond your fears. Sometimes, what we’ve prayed for for so long comes to us, but in disguise!

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) The desire to maintain peak mental efficiency while refusing to come out of the fast lane for a pit stop can cause a crack-up. You treat your car better than you’ve been treating you. Recharge your battery.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) A motion to table emotion would be out of order this week. You ”know” what intuition sounds like when it’s screaming in your ear, and, if you listen, you’ll leave those “realists” standing in the dust of reason.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) For a change, prepare yourself for what’s to come. To get into the spirit, try to stock up on what you’re going to use this season. You can use your skill at spontaneous gathering for seizing the warmer months ahead.

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Invent a way to avoid socially imposed habits of eating and other desires that are not purely of your choosing. It’s not that you can’t handle the consequences, but who needs a trip to the dentist, etc.?

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Go after everything you want this week but bring someone dear to you along for the joy ride. Going it alone will put you at the mercy of an authority far higher than you really want to deal with right now.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) It’s a grand time to get out and get your hands dirty. You’ll love how it will clean out your mind. And don’t worry about being called lazy because your callers will be too envious to dish any dirt themselves.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) It’s not that everybody isn’t paying attention to you, it’s just that they’ve all got to deal with more problems than you this week and they’re busy. So don’t feel unloved - just enjoy the brief respite.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) It’s going to be easier for you to get what you want this week, so make sure that you know what you want. Believe it, or not, the answer is in a song you know. If you don’t know the lyrics, just hum the tune.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) You know you can knock down a brick wall if you have to, but can you push through a veil of tears? You may have to pretend an awful lot but don’t worry, you’ll never fool yourself - at least, not this time.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) This week, the fires of love elicit a clarity rarely found nowadays. But let your lovelight shine on only one special person - you’ll know who I mean. The road is clear, you just have to take the first step.

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Take your work home or resign yourself to

living in your workplace. Mind your feelings so your abundant energy won’t go to waste. Sexual attraction to one so opposite yourself is pleasant but ephemeral.

NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, also read the sign before or after your birthday.

Susan Boyle, 1961At first, the audience though the middle-aged

woman who took the stage on “Britain’s Got Talent” was a set-up.

After all, Susan Boyle was hardly the stereotypical talent show contestant. In less than three minutes Boyle, England, and the world would change forever.

That’s how long it took her to sing “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Misreables. Boyle didn’t merely sing it; she belted it out as if it came from inside her, as if it were written especially for her and not the stage play. Such was the power of her performance that the crowd began a standing ovation before Boyle even finished the first verse.

Boyle lost the battle -- she finished second -- but won the war. Her debut album released later that year became the top selling album in UK history, topping even the Beatles.

Boyle came from a working class family in Blackburn, Scotland. Her father was a miner and served in World War II. She continued to live there her entire life and never married. Boyle, a devout Catholic, took care of her mother until she died in 2007.

Boyle has earned two Grammy awards and sold 19 million albums already. A 10-year old video of her singing “Cry Me A River” went viral, logging 100 million views after it was unearthed.

Boyle takes her career seriously. She has studied piano and vows to play on her next album. She has already achieved one lifelong goal – she recorded a duet with Donny Osmond.

By Rick MurphySoozy Miller’s odyssey began in the

Spring 2008 when she first realized her son’s behavior was anything but normal. He was all of six, yet he was smashing his bedroom door with such furor Miller was petrified

“I’m sitting at the top of the stairs sobbing,” she writes in her new book,

A Natural Approach To Attention Deficit Disorder

From ADHD To Honor Roll, which is one parent’s attempt to understand Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and a primer on how to deal with it.

Miller was recently divorced at the time and felt very much alone. Yet her son was also capable of intense affection: “He comes over to me, squats down and hugs me. Tight. ‘I’m so sorry, Mommy. I’m so sorry.’ Like an abusive husband might do after he’s just beaten his wife,” she wrote.

When he was younger Miller convinced herself everything would be OK. “I’m a New Yorker. I figured.

He got it from me. I was in denial. I kept putting it off,” Miller said in an interview this week.

Miller, a year after, sought help, but she was stymied by the fact she did not want to overmedicate her son -- the traditional methods of dealing with ADHD. “But I had to do something quick,” she recalled.

First, she tried Adderall, but it didn’t seem to work. Then she tried Daytrana, a patch that releases its active ingredients gradually over the course of the day.

But her son stopped eating, and further research revealed a slew of side effects, some serious.

A chance meeting with another mother, Dr. Caroline Fierro, changed everything. "She turned my son’s life — and mine—around,” Miller said.

“The three of us worked diligently for the next three months and in the two years that followed, as we cured my son of ADHD the natural way, without pharmaceuticals,” Miller wrote.

Fierro’s approach centered on the child’s allergies and diet. She administered a Metametrix Organix test and discovered a deficiency in a number of important vitamins and nutrients and an invasive yeast infection.

Fierro stressed a natural cure, a

diet rich in proteins like beans and turkey, eggs, fish, walnuts and more. The boy took Epson Salt baths three times a week.

Four years later the boy was in fact on the honor roll. “He’s completely normal. He handled it very well,” Miller said of the new diet. “I always tried to feed my kids healthy food anyway,“ Miller said.

In addition to being an author, Miller, who lives in East Hampton Village, does detailed writing, general marketing and branding for a variety of clients.

“I wrote this book to encourage all parents of hyperactive and behaviorally-challenged children,” Miller said. Her book is available on Amazon.

Ingredients (serves 4)2 large carrots (peeled & diced)

1 onion (peeled & diced)1 fennel bulb (trimmed & diced)

1 green pepper (trimmed, deseeded, & diced)

2 cloves of garlic (minced)1/2 bunch of thyme

1 bay leaf4 red potatoes (diced)

1 c diced butternut squash1 c diced celery

2 tbsp tomato paste3 c vegetable stock

2 c water1/2 lemon juiced, and zested

Vegetable Soup With Spiced Crème Fraiche

1/4 c crème fraiche1 tsp curry powder

1 tsp paprika1 pinch of nutmeg

1 pinch of cinnamon3 tbsp canola oil

salt and black pepper to taste

MethodBegin by heating two tbsp of canola

oil over medium high heat in a large, deep soup pot. Add the celery, onion, garlic, green pepper, fennel, and carrots. Allow the vegetables to sweat for five minutes, while stirring often.

Add vegetable stock and the water. Allow everything to come to a boil

while watching it and stirring often. Reduce the soup to a simmer and add the tomato paste, the herbs, and season lightly with salt and pepper. Remember to taste the soup throughout the cooking process.

Allow the soup to simmer with a lid on for 90 minutes. After 60 minutes add the potatoes and butternut squash to the soup and allow them to cook for the rest of the time.

Whip up the spiced crème fraiche. To begin, take a small sauté pan and

heat it over medium heat. Add one tbsp canola oil and allow it to become hot. Add the spices.

Let the spices heat up, or bloom in the oil to release some of their flavor. This is a fairly quick process over medium heat. The result should have the consistency of a paste. Allow the paste to cool. Whisk it into your crème fraiche with the lemon juice and zest. When the soup is done and ready to serve add a nice spoonful to give the dish a nice, cool kick.
