Explore a beautiful coastline honed by the shining sea, and verdant forests bursting with lifeOriginally established as Ashizuri Quasi-National Park in 1955, the Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park became a national park in 1972 following the additional designation of the Uwakai region and the marine park area. A major feature of this park is its everchanging landscape consisting of coastal strips, including the islands of south-west Shikoku, and the mountains inland which tower over 1,000 meters in height. The Ashizuri region has extensive cliff s and precipices formed along its coastal terraces and is home to communities of subtropical marine life and corals that benefi t from the warm Kuroshio sea current. The Uwakai regionʼs charming insular landscape is characterized by delicate inlets formed by its submerged coasts and the region off ers beautiful marine scenery such as soft coral. The inland area is home to a natural forest of giant trees such as Japanese umbrella pines, Japanese cedars, and Japanese cypresses. Nametoko Valley is a popular sightseeing spot located in the upper stream of the Shimanto River, featuring a series of waterfalls and beautiful riparian trees such as the Quercus salicina and Machilus thunbergii. The national park is also home to Kongofukuji Temple, which is said to have been established by infl uential Buddhist monk Kobo-Daishi (774‒835) and is one of the Shikoku Eightyeight Sacred Temples. Visitors can make pilgrimages to Gassan Shrine and Sasayama Shrine, which are included in the Shikoku Bekkaku 20 temples, and cultural traditions such as osettai, an off ering of food and drink to pilgrims, are still carried out along the pilgrimage route.
Access routes are given as examples. Times indicated for each route section are approximate only. For more details, please visit the counters or websites of the transportation providers.

People have been drawing pictures in the sky using the stars to guide them and connecting myths with those pictures for approximately 5,000 years. Just what were people of the past thinking as they drew constellations in the sky? With a focus on seasonal constellations, your guide will point out stars using a laser pointer and discuss a variety of topics including myths, trivia and your zodiac sign while tailoring the discussion to your wants and needs. In addition to constellation guidance, guides are also available for daytime coastal tours to experience the history of the earth.
