The Ashizuri region has extensive cliff s and precipices formed along its coastal terraces and is home to communities of subtropical marine life and corals that benefi t from the warm Kuroshio sea current. The Uwakai regionʼs charming insular landscape is characterized by delicate inlets formed by its submerged coasts and the region off ers beautiful marine scenery such as soft coral. The inland area is home to a natural forest of giant trees such as Japanese umbrella pines, Japanese cedars, and Japanese cypresses. Nametoko Valley is a popular sightseeing spot located in the upper stream of the Shimanto River, featuring a series of waterfalls and beautiful riparian trees such as the Quercus salicina and Machilus thunbergii. The national park is also home to Kongofukuji Temple, which is said to have been established by infl uential Buddhist monk Kobo-Daishi (774‒835) and is one of the Shikoku Eightyeight Sacred Temples. Visitors can make pilgrimages to Gassan Shrine and Sasayama Shrine, which are included in the Shikoku Bekkaku 20 temples, and cultural traditions such as osettai, an off ering of food and drink to pilgrims, are still carried out along the pilgrimage route.     The spectacle of waves crashing against the cliffs of Cape Ashizuri is well-known, but it’s not often that people see the cape from the water. Board a sightseeing boat to do just that and feel the power of the Pacifi c Ocean as you weave through the rocky shoreline. Gazing up at the majestic cliffs from the water’s surface is both awe-inspiring and thrilling. Around the vernal equinox and autumnal equinox, sunset cruises are also off ered.

    At fi rst glance, it looks like a normal ship. Head into the observation room, however, and you’ll find yourself in something more akin to a submarine. Gaze out at the national park-designated ocean through the boat’s substantial underwater windows and discover a fantasy world out of a dream.     Terraced fi elds of satsuma mandarins stretch from the sea and deep into the mountains in the Yoshida area of Uwajima. Yoshida is famous for its high mandarin production, made possible by excellent soil drainage, plentiful sunlight and rich soil.
