The holiday season is here! During this special time of the year, families gather and communities celebrate in fellowship. It is not only a season filled with cheer, but also a time to give, share and reflect. I am incredibly thankful for many things this year including the opportunity to continue my service to our beloved community. To those celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and other holidays, I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season full of joy, peace, and happiness. I look forward to continuing this journey with you.

■ OUR HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATIONS

We kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th - October 15th) with our dear friends at the Neighborhood Self-Help by Older Persons Project (NSHOPP) annual gala. I was humbled to receive the NSHOPP Award for my service to the community. NSHOPP is a multi-service agency currently serving over 5,000 Bronx residents, many of whom are Latino. They have been a strong stakeholder in our community, and we are delighted to have joined them to celebrate their success. During Hispanic Heritage Month, our office also visited our wonderful senior citizens at William Hodson and Casa Boricua Senior Centers.

■ NUESTRAS CELEBRACIONES DEL MES DE LA HERENCIA HISPANA

Iniciamos el Mes de la Herencia Hispana (15 de septiembre – 15 de octubre) con nuestros queridos amigos en la gala anual de Autoayuda a la Comunidad del Proyecto de Personas Mayores (NSHOPP, por sus siglas en inglés). Me sentí conmovido al recibir el premio NSHOPP por mi servicio a la comunidad. La NSHOPP es una agencia que ofrece múltiples servicios y actualmente sirve a más de 5,000 residentes del Bronx, muchos de los cuales son latinos. Ellos han sido fuertes defensores de la comunidad y nos complace habernos unido a celebrar su éxito. Durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, nuestra oficina también visitó a nuestros maravillosos adultos mayores en los Centros para Adultos Mayores William Hodson y Casa Boricua.

■ GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY Throughout the year, we came together to continue #BuildingABetterBronx with many outstanding organizations. We co-sponsored Jackson Houses Family Day, Jennings Terrace Co-op Community Day, Morris Houses Family Day, WhedCo festival and the C-Ball Block Party. Moreover, including the “Bringing the Peace” back-to-school drive with Linda Kemp, we distributed more than 700 backpacks to young residents, Bronxites and NYCHA residents. This year, we once again partnered with the 100 Black Men to distribute food for Thanksgiving meals at Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Epworth United Methodist Church and Greater Holy Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. Thanks to The Bronx Foundation, we provided more than $2,000 in school supplies to Bronx youth. Moreover, thanks to Bronxite and New York Jet Willie Colon and The Bronx Foundation, we provided toys to 200 families for Christmas. These efforts have allowed us to share how we are giving back in many different forums, including the “Cities For Life” summit in Paris, France to share how are we implementing our “3,2,1: Economic Development, Education and Equality for All” vision. Being able to help our brothers and sisters is the ultimate form of public service, and we thank you for giving us the opportunity to support the community.

■ RETRIBUYENDO A LA COMUNIDAD Durante el año, nos unimos con muchas organizaciones importantes para continuar construyendo un mejor Bronx (#BuildingABetterBronx).

Copatrocinamos el Día de la Familia en las Casas Jackson, el Día Comunitario de la Cooperativa Jennings Terrace, el Día de la Familia de las Casas Morris, el Festival WhedCo y la Fiesta de la Cuadra C-Ball. Earlier this year, in an effort to bridge the technology divide, our office partnered with Technology For Families in Need (TechF.I.N.) to announce an award of 120 computers to residents in the 79th Assembly District. We are excited to now share that 47 computers have been distributed to students in the district. On October 28th, we hosted an event with recipients, parents, and administrators to discuss the importance of bridging the technology gap that exists in the Bronx. The computers will open new doors for these students, increase their chances at academic success and give them access to a full spectrum of online learning tools and opportunities. ■ THE BRONX RECEIVES $1.4 MILLION FOR MY BROTHER’S KEEPER FUNDING FROM THE STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Following the tragic death of Trayvon Martin, President Obama launched “My Brother’s Keeper” in 2014, a coordinated Federal effort to address the persistent opportunity gaps faced by Boys and Young Men of Color and ensure that these young men can reach their full potential.

This year, New York State became the first state to fund a pilot M.B.K. program to the tune of $20 million. We are excited to announce that our school districts in The Bronx have been awarded more than $1.4 million dollars in My Brother’s Keeper funding so far. The final Request For Proposal, which will be distributed publicly soon, focusing on funding school models that improve outcomes for boys and young men of color, will be awarded by the State Education Department to school districts and organizations that develop or improve upon exemplary school models and practices that demonstrate cultural and linguistic responsiveness to the needs of boys and young men of color. Successful examples might include expansion and/or creation of new Career and Technical Education (CTE) models and programs that target students most at risk or professional development to prepare more students to be on track to take AP exams and other accelerated courses in high school. Our office is here for you with any housing issues, especially as the winter is now here! If you have any issues with your home, including heat, hot water, security or mold, please let us know IMMEDIATELY. Every Tuesday afternoon from noon until 3 p.m., our office hosts “Tenant Tuesdays,” where tenants can meet one-on-one with a housing specialist who will help 79th district residents with any of their housing issues. On Tuesday, October 11th, ESPN’s The Undefeated hosted, “A Conversation with the President: Sports, Race & Achievement.” President Obama discussed his leadership through the lens of the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative, the needs of our young men and boys of color, athletes and activism, the legacy and importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and our urgent responsibility in #ChangingTheNarrative. Our office, in partnership with the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance and the New Leaders Council, hosted an official watch party at Viktoria’s Italian Restaurant where with community leaders and residents, we discussed the challenges and solutions for preparing young men and boys of color to succeed inside and outside of school. Thank you to everyone who attended the watch party and participated in this critical discussion.
