Message from Mr. Lash First Day of School The 2019-2020 school year is off to an awesome start because of the combined efforts of TEAM Briarwood (teachers, staff, school district, students, parents, PTA, and community)! TEAM Briarwood is a family and we work together to provide a world class education for our students! On the first day, you could feel the excitement as students and family members filled the sidewalks and students eagerly got out of their car and off the bus to get inside to begin a new school year! There were plenty of pictures, hugs, high-fives, and handshakes! As principal, I am committed to keeping that “excitement for learning” flowing all year as we do what is best for kids on a daily basis! Online Registration Verification Open NOW Be sure to log into Skyward information system to update your child's enrollment details at your earliest convenience. This includes the technology acceptable use policy that allows your child to use an iPad along with other important documentation to verify enrollment. One step is to acknowledge you read the SMSD student handbook. Follow this link to read the SMSD Student Handbook and use as a future reference. Please call the Briarwood office at 993-2200 if you need any assistance. My Volunteer Pal (MVP) Program My Volunteer Pal (MVP) program has been successfully placing volunteers in our SMSD schools! All parents and volunteers who supervise students without staff members present must go through the training program. MVP training is now 2 simple steps. Attend a training and complete an online background screening process. Finger printing is no longer required. We are offering an evening training at Briarwood on Thursday, September 5th at 7:00 P.M. and a morning training at Briarwood on Tuesday, September 10th at 9:00 A.M. Briarwood Directory and Parent Portal Briarwood Directory and Parent Portal: Update your information by August 31
The Briarwood PTA Parent Portal and Online Directory (formerly in My School Anywhere) has been migrated to Membership Toolkit— an online service that makes it easier to work together. Directories, PTA memberships, email communications and our online store all run through this service. Please note: This portal is separate from Skyward and the contact information given will be used for important PTA communications such as room parent emails and event announcements.
Returning families: Your family’s data has been migrated to Membership Toolkit, but you will need to create an account on the new portal. Check your inbox for an email that details the few simple steps needed.

If you don’t want your family’s information included in the online and printed directories there is an opt-out option during the confirmation process, but we encourage you to at least enter an email address so that you receive messages from the PTA throughout the year.
Your family’s information must be entered online and confirmed in order to be included in the online and printed school directories. All families will have access to the parent portal, but access to the online directory is limited to PTA members.

New Briarwood Policy for Birthday Celebrations For this school year Briarwood will implement a “no birthday treats” guideline. No food or drink birthday treats will be allowed to be brought in to celebrate a birthday. If your child still wants to bring something for classmates, items such as a pencil, eraser, etc. could be ideas for alternate choices. This decision was made after much thought and discussion at the building and district level. There are a variety of reasons for this change, the main one being to coordinate with our district’s wellness policy on making healthy choices, in alignment with federal regulations. Other rationale for restricting treats at school include concerns about allergies, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and equity.

Come in to the Chipotle at 6879 W. 91st Street in Overland Park on Tuesday, August 27th between 5:00pm and 9:00pm. Bring in this flyer, show it on your smartphone or tell the cashier you’re supporting the cause to make sure that 33% of the proceeds will be donated to Briarwood Elementary School.
