Abstract
In line with the implementation of the recommendations given by the
Mother-Tongue Languages (MTL) Review Committee of the Singapore Ministry
of Education (MOE) in 2010, the researcher aimed at exploring a musical song-
based pedagogy1 in addressing the issue of declining use of Tamil Language
(TL) by students, especially at secondary levels. The term musical song-based
pedagogy does not signify that music is taught through songs, rather language is
taught through musical songs or lyrics poetry. Moreover, the music is not given
more importance, rather it is considered as motivating factor which connects the
learner who gets involved and engaged in the process of learning the language.
The focus is given in the language aspect of lyrics of the song.
The researcher, when he was leading a MOE's Tamil Language Centre
for 11 years, he encouraged his students learning the Higher Tamil Language
(HTL) curriculum, which is pitched to the learning of a first language level, to
display higher competence in knowing the language structure and the language
1 Musical Song-based Pedagogy: In the domain of teaching language, there is a popular strategy called
the teaching of language through literature. It implies a fact that language can be, especially the advanced
and progressive level of competence in a language, can be taught through literature as it is a highest
domain wherein highly creative, innovative and coloured expression and utterances are employed with
imaginative and literary techniques (Sarac, S. 2003). Thus, the term language through literature is popular
in language teaching and learning domain. Under this category, as lyrical poetry or song is a part of
literature, lyrical song is, in modern days, used as a teaching and learning tool. The lyrical song includes
music which appeals and motivates the listener to concentrate upon it. Lyrical poetry or song is not merely
a written song to be read, rather it is sung by singers whose pronunciation is legible and serves as hallmark
to be emulated coupled with music and rhymes, besides literary techniques, like alliteration, assonance,
concord, ornamentpox, similes, metaphors, reduplicated words, etc. These can attract the inner hearts of
listeners and will be lingering in their minds, and consequently it will augment their competence of
language.
xxiii
use so that they can become effective Tamil language promoters, like teachers,
specialists and media news casters in Singapore. Therefore, based on the
experience of the researcher in using movie songs as a tool to teach and enhance
the learning of Tamil to his students since his teaching career, focuses on the
teaching and learning process of Tamil by using the simple but thought provoking
lyrics penned by the poet Kannadasan (also known as ‘Kaviyarasar', a prestigious
title awarded to him, meaning Kings of Poets) with particular reference to his
language structure and language use.
This is an innovative study, which is not meant to disprove or prove any
established theoretical understanding or which has not changed the status quo.
Rather, it formed a new pedagogy on the area of teaching and learning of Tamil
language through musical songs. Thus, the research is entitled, Employing
Language Structure and Language Use found in the Lyrics of Kaviyarasar
Kannadasan to Enhance Teaching and Learning of Higher Tamil in
Singapore Secondary Schools.
The aims and significance of this research were to (a) examine the
language use and the stylistic structure used in the lyrics of Kannadasan as
reflected in musical movie songs; (b) unearth uniqueness of Kannadasan's lyrics
in terms of language use; (c) select, grade and present the suitable lyrics of
Kannadasan as teaching and learning tool; (d) try out those learning units which
depict the themes that are related to ethical, moral, social, motivational aspects
of student community, in the real classroom situation; (e) observe and study the
effects of the lyrics of Kannadasan in teaching and learning of Higher Tamil
through forming controlled and experimental groups; and (f) evaluate the effect
xxiv
of the lyrics of Kannadasan in the learning achievement of the Tamil amongst
secondary 2 Higher Tamil students.
The study has analysed and highlighted: (a) the illustration of the stylistic
structure of the language use in his songs; (b) the infusion of cultural traits and
values of 21st century competencies which are found in his songs, especially in
the socio-cultural contexts and situations; and (c) the modernisation of older
concepts and difficult philosophical thoughts in an effective, simple and an
impressive way. Thus, the study tried to approach the main subject matter with
the help of, (a) language structure approach (b) language use approach (c)
teaching and learning approach (d) motivational approach.
Schools are making the shift in the teaching strategies to make Tamil
teaching and learning interesting and joyful for students. However, there have
been no studies to date in Singapore as well as in other countries to know how
the infusion of Tamil musical songs do have an effect to enhance the teaching
and learning of Tamil in classrooms. Thus, this research study was carried out.
As an experienced senior Tamil Language teachers in MOE, the researcher
believed that inspirational teaching drives joyful and meaningful learning
achievement. Hence, he trusted that this innovative pedagogy of using selected
movie songs of poet Kannadasan whose choice of words and the use of the
language will impress the Tamil students and would help enthuse them to have
a live-long urge to learn and use Tamil with confidence.
There are so many studies undertaken mainly in Tamilnadu of South India
on the works of Kannadasan, such as the nuances of language, the patriotic feel,
the devotional purity, desirable values of a concerned citizen, philosophical
xxv
thoughts and so on. The critical review of literature also says a fact that no study
either in Singapore or elsewhere has been done on lyrics of Kannadasan with the
view to unearth the power of lyrical songs in teaching and learning process of
Tamil language. And there are so many studies which establish the fact lyrical
songs with music which instigate the language learners to learn the language
interestingly. These two rationale, apart from the researcher’s personal instinct,
have prompted him to undertake this study. Moreover, studying those research
submissions in details as well interviewing 12 of the researchers, particularly in
Tamilnadu, it was learnt that the researches on Kannadasan's works were not
done in the focus of teaching and learning of Tamil language.
The study has also examined how the lyrics could enrich and enhance
students' proficiency in the Tamil language by enabling them to use metaphors,
phrases, idioms in an interesting and simple way, and sentence structure
effectively and appropriately so as to enhance the quality of the students' written
work as well as their spoken interaction. The study has unearthed language
structure, vocabulary, literary phrases and provides ideas for the teaching and
learning of the Tamil curriculum interestingly. Although this research has shown
the uniqueness of the poet's lyrics, in terms of simple language use and style,
content and the form, the content appropriateness also helped to infuse the
desirable skills, knowledge and the competencies of our students in the 21st
century.
Together with the review of the literature conducted, it was understood that
this research is the pioneering and full-fledged study which came up with a lot of
insights on Kannadasan's lyrics pertaining to teaching and learning of Tamil
xxvi
Language, particularly among Higher Tamil Language students in Singapore
secondary schools.
The study reveals that students' learning must be authentic, interesting,
meaningful, engaging, joyful and relevant for life-long use; interlinked with socio-
cultural infusion, in order to bring about greater validity, sufficient explanation and
greater credibility in research, qualitative method was employed. Hence,
descriptive approach was employed to gather and validate data through teaching,
obtaining feedback and conducting interviews and analysing data applying
statistics.
Direct teaching, obtaining data-feedback, analysis of texts, through essay
writing and interviews have been used as the primary source of obtaining data.
The essays and interviews will determine skills obtained, views and attitudes of
the students to confirm the objectives of the study.
The size of the sample for this study was 100. The students were from
MOE schools in Singapore studying Higher Tamil Language (HTL) curriculum at
Secondary 2 level. As not all secondary schools offer HTL curriculum due to a
small cohort size of students offering the HTL, the number of participants is
unavoidably small. The initial rationale for wanting to select the Secondary 2 HTL
students who are aged between 14 and 15 years, was because they would have
completed the entire secondary 1 Higher Tamil syllabus and would have a good
grasp and overview of the language structure and the use of the language. The
study was also conducted for this cohort of students so as to enthuse them to
offer Tamil literature curriculum in secondary 3 and 4 as an optional curriculum
subject. The greater use of songs, especially Kannadasan’s lyrics, will help to
xxvii
enhance the interest of students in learning Tamil Language, especially the
Higher Tamil Language (HTL) cohort. Also, the HTL curriculum is pitched with the
first- language learning of Tamil syllabus. Looking forward, the research for the
selected cohort is to create a pool of proficient users of the language who can be
encouraged to take up Tamil related careers in Singapore, such as Tamil
teaching and Tamil media specialisation.
The themes for the intervention programme were selected carefully to
focus on their experiences and the frequency of the composition writing themes.
In order to achieve reliable and valid findings, the students chosen were of higher
academic ability. 10 secondary schools and 1 Junior College which offers
secondary HTL curriculum were selected for the research study so as to have a
good number of participants.
The content of the research study was thematised. It was packaged as an
academic-based enrichment module with units guided by five broad themes,
namely, (a) kindness and ethics (b) moral values and good deeds, (c)
appreciation of good friendship (d) motivation (e) living a good life. The lessons
were conducted for the students thrice in a week for two and a half (2½) hours
over a period of eight (8) weeks in their own schools either during or after
curriculum hours. The lessons were co-conducted both by the researcher and
with the teacher of the class with close monitoring to ensure that the findings are
credible, confirmable, dependable and transferable to sites and places doing
similar kinds of research.
Classroom activities were carried out in the form of essay writings and few
hands-on activities such as quizzes and singing the lyrics. The key objective was
xxviii
to find out if the students are able to apply the language skills that learnt through
these activities. A testing of these activities would be relevant and useful for the
classroom teachers of other Singapore schools nationwide.
Kannadasan’s lyrics are being acclaimed by all sections of Tamil both
highly educated and men in the street. His use of the language includes both
pedantic style and pedestrian style and, classical and modern styles as well. So,
the lyrics of Kannadasan have a lot of teaching in terms of content and form. The
present research topic, therefore, tried to see the effect of Kaviarasu
Kannadasan's lyrics in teaching and learning the Tamil Language. Kannadasan
has played a significant role in the process of promoting Tamil through his movie
songs for more than 40 years during his lifetime, especially during 1960's, till
1980's. In Singapore, there are many Tamil educators, public audience, readers,
listeners, critics, literary scholars, language experts, experts in comparative
literature, media producers and others impressed by the way of language used
by Kannadasan. They admire the language simplicity, language style and quotes
used in his songs which are still applicable for effective communication in today's
context. Every day, of its Tamil broadcast, the Tamil section of MediaCorp (Oli
96.8) broadcasts some of his songs. The Tamil literary group in Singapore still
takes his lead in putting forward the concepts and difficult philosophical thoughts
in an effective and impressive way so that it reaches even the less educated. The
main reason for this is the style that he used in his language structure. He tried
his best to make use of the fewer technicalities in language structure so that it
will be used easily. He tried to modernise the older concepts in such a way people
can understand them without ambiguity. He was able to correlate the structures
on one hand, and on the other hand, he could add in the socio-cultural contexts
xxix
and situations by giving importance both to cohesion and coherence. This kind of
correlation helped him to achieve the expected simplicity, effectiveness,
rationality of presentation and finally efficiency in expression.
Most of the literature on the research of Kannadasan's works related to his
songs has been the study of his language use in a more context oriented, culture-
bound and situational. Hence, the study of his language structure was mostly
accounted for his literary nuances. However, there had been little research to
find out how the poet's language structure was defined in a linguistic approach
looking into the descriptive, stylistic and communicative aspects.
Through the research, it is evident that it is quite useful for the Tamil
Language students, in particular, the HTL students, to be familiar with the
Kannadasan's songs, in order to improve their self-confidence in language
structure, but also try to incorporate the socio-cultural settings in appropriate
ways in their expression. It not only helps to gain confidence in using the
language choosing the right contexts but also helps to improve the presentation
quite fluently without hesitation or fear complex. This is one of the ways to achieve
fluency in reading and speech. So students of language at the very initial stage
itself should be exposed to the social cultural context of the lyrics can be
introduced to the student community through visual, movies, audio, etc. and given
due practice and training. So eventually stylistics-study of language structure
using contextual significance is a must in order to develop communicative skills
among the learners.
This is an empirical study using empirical evidence through direct and
indirect observation and experience. 100 students divided into as controlled
xxx
group (50) and as an experimental group (50) from 10 secondary schools and 1

They take a stand on the use of Kannadasan songs for teaching and learning
purpose because they are all the living examples of enjoying the benefits of using
Kannadasan songs for improving their competence of Tamil through lyrics of
xxxi
Kannadasan. This has helped the researcher to take a research stand based on
their views.
To understand the language use and the style of expressions of
Kannadasan in his lyrics is something unique. The research studied a selection
of 500 of his movie songs and selected some to be used to teach the students
through audio and visual modes. Data was collected keeping the objectives in the
mind, at all levels of language, through essay assignments.
Those modules were administrated and observed with experimental
groups of the students and their language enhancement and comparatively
analysed with that of the controlled group of students who learned Tamil without
administering the prepared teaching and learning resources using the lyrics of
Kannadasan. The study confines to the lyrics of Kannadasan alone, and his other
literary works have not been considered for this study. In the process of data
collection, the researcher was also directly involved in the teaching of the
students of different schools. Some of teachers in the schools observed the
lessons taught by the researcher and co-taught the lesson with the researcher.
The present research did not pay its attention in identifying the difference
between the teaching of researcher and of co-taught.
The present study has given some guidelines and ideas on how to engage
students in Tamil language learning in the classroom, thus making teaching and
learning joyful and meaningful for students as well as developing in them the
passion to use Tamil for life long. It is hoped that some students may take up
Tamil related career, especially the Higher Tamil students.
