In 2013, the management ownership of the GWK Bali was taken over by PT Alam Sutera Realty Indonesia, one of the first developers in Indonesia. Originally, the statue of Garuda Wisnu had ini al plan to be built with the height of 126 meters and width of 60 meters. However, un l now it is s ll in the making process so that the height of the statue today is only 20 meters.

Along with the ongoing develop-ment, the GWK tourist a rac on devel-ops into a place of cultural exhibi on, event and entertainment a rac on as well as a forum of informa on and communica on for local culture, na-

onal culture, regional culture and even interna onal culture.

VIINo. 100 February 25 - March 10, 2015COVER STORY

THROUGH the Tumpek Kandang ritual, people are expected to develop the livestock sector to strengthen the economic founda ons.

On Tumpek Kandang, animals especially ca le are made some celebratory obla ons. Es-sen ally, devotees worship the Lord Shiva Pasu-pa as manifesta on of God serving as the king of all the living things. In the ritual procession, devotees invoke blessing in order their ca le could be bestowed with prime health and safety.

However, philosophically the Tumpek Kan-dang celebra on implies that people should develop compassion for all the living creatures. In the economic context, the procession mandates that agricultural sector in the broader sense

(livestock) can be developed to strengthen the economic founda ons of society.

Similarly, the prayers are also recited for other livestock such as pigs, goats, chickens and ducks. Even, a pig for the Hindu community in Bali is o en used as a sort of saving or piggy bank. When people hold celebra-

ons, the pigs are slaughter or in emergency case they can be sold to meet the needs.

As the animals des ned for human food, chickens, ducks, pigs and so forth are o en used as a protein source to support the human life. To that end, those animals should be constantly developed.

However, other specific animals, especially those be-longed to the endangered species, should be preserved. For example, they are green turtles, Bali starlings, deers, monkeys and so forth. These rare animals must be maintained so as not to become ex nct.

To keep the endangered species from ex nc-on, Balinese people associate them with my-

thology. For instance, the animals are regarded as the property (duwe) of God such as the white cow, ape, fruit bats, snake and so on. Through

the mythology, devotees are actually encour-aged to conserve the wildlife by preserving them based on religious concepts. Mythology seems much more powerful than a call or an appeal to preserve the endangered species.

In the Hindu concept, no single thing is

without the power of God. Inside them lie the jivatman or the soul. On that account, the con-cept of developing compassion for all the God’s creatures should be con nued. Through the celebra on Tumpek Kandang, people should develop them well for the benefit of life and preserve the endangered species in order not to become ex nct. BTNewspaper/*/net

ON ONE of his first official working visits to Bali the In-donesian Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, said that the Meet-ing, Incen ve, Conference and Exhibi on (MICE) sector forms a mainstay in the Government’s plans to a ract 10 million visi-tors to Indonesia in 2015. To achieve this target, MICE sup-por ng facili es in Jakarta and Bali will con nue to need to be enhanced to ensure both des-

Quoted by Metrobali.com, Yahya said: “MICE movements have progressed to where around five events come to Bali every day. In terms of facili es, Bali does not yet have a large exhibi on hall able to accommodate 50 – 100,000 people. This is an impediment for MICE operators in Bali. An exhibi on hall able to handle 100,000 people is being developed at Bumi Serpong Da-
