BIt is a great honour to present our final newsletter/journal for

2012.

The past 26 years have seen us evolve from a society which

was not much bigger than a club, producing one very thin

journal and possibly two A4 size newsletters a year to what

we see today. This newsletter is now as good as a lot of breed

journals.

This standard of excellence is not only portrayed in the office/

admin but particularly in the quality of cattle our breeders

produce.

Dit is ‘n voorreg om aan ‘n ras te behoort wat aanhou strewe

om die beste produk moontlik vir die mark te lewer. Hetsy dit

bulle, koeie, verse of speenkalwers is, die passie en motivering

is net vir die beste.

We owe a great deal to our founder members who have

instilled and maintained the breed standards at all times,

without compromise.

This and the blend of youth with the drive and the passion

and innovative ideas has made for a really good atmosphere

where politics and personal preference takes second place.

The best beefmasters possible at all times remains the focus.

The Beefmaster Breed has and continues to make enormous

inroads into the beef industry . . . and this is just the beginning!

A bull is the most important animal in your beef cattle enterprise. He makes only 3-4% of your herd, but he contributes genetically 50% to

every calf he produces. A single bull can produce 40 or more calves per year for you.

Here are some practical tips on bull management that will assist you to get the best results from your breeding bulls.

AT PURCHASE:1. Ask the seller for the bull’s pedigree certificate with

EBVs, fertility certificate and DNA certificate. If it is not immediately available, arrange that it is sent to you as soon as possible.

2. If you and the seller both use BeefProTM, ask him to send you an electronic file (Animal Transfer File) with all the bull’s details for you to import into BeefPro. Alternatively, download the bull’s data from Logix and import it into your BeefPro.

3. Make sure the seller has all your details (name, address, telephone number, email address, and Stud Book member number, if applicable) and request him to transfer the bull as soon as possible to your name.

THE NEW BULL ON YOUR FARM:1. If the “new” bull is transported with other “foreign”

bulls, it is not ideal to put the bulls together in the same compartment on a truck – especially if they are free standing – for they can fight a lot on the truck and the subordinate male can not get away from the fighter. Thus, load foreign bulls (where possible, even bulls that know each other), preferably in separate compartments.

2. Check the bull at offloading if he has sustained any injuries during the transport to the farm. If necessary, treat him immediately.

3. Ensure that the bull (especially if it is a single bull) is offloaded in a secure camp (with good fences) together with another animal or two to keep him company. Clean water and good grazing (or good quality hay or roughage) will calm him down so that he can get used to the new environment sooner. Make sure he gets the water. Leave the bull to rest for at least two days, but keep a daily eye on him to make sure that you pick up any problem that may arise immediately.

4. If it is impossible to keep the new bull apart from other bulls, make sure the camp is big enough for the younger and subordinate bull(s) to get away from the dominant bulls.

5. You can insure the bull comprehensively and/or you can tap the semen of the bull if it is special genetics. If you bring in bulls from a disease free area to an area where diseases such as heart water, red water, gall sickness etc. are endemic, rather insure the bull extensively for a year.

6. Introduce the bull immediately to your normal dipping, dosing and vaccination program – regardless of what the previous owner did.

7. If the bull received concentrated feed before the auction and/or if the bull is very fat, get him gradually off the concentrates. Give him, for example, 8 kg/day

2. Indien u en die verkoper beide BeefProTM gebruik, versoek hom om vir u ‘n elektroniese leêr (Dier Oordrag Lêer) te stuur met al die bul se besonderhede wat u kan intrek in BeefPro. Andersins, laai die bul se data van Logix af en trek dit in u BeefPro in.

3. Maak seker die verkoper het al u besonderhede (naam, adres, tel no, e-pos adres, en Stamboek lidnommer, indien van toepassing) en versoek hom om die bul so gou moontlik oor te dra op u naam.

DIE NUWE BUL OP U PLAAS:1. Indien die “nuwe” bul saam met “vreemde” ander

bulle vervoer word, is die ideaal om die bulle nie saam in dieselfde kompartement op ‘n trok te laai nie – veral nie as hulle “los” staan nie – hulle kan vreeslik baklei op die trok en die ondergeskikte bul kan ook nie wegkom van die bakleier af nie. Laai dus vreemde bulle (selfs ook, waar moontlik, bulle wat mekaar ken) verkieslik in aparte kompartemente.

2. Kontroleer tydens die aflaai van die bul of hy enige beserings tydens die vervoer na die plaas opgedoen het. Indien nodig, behandel hom onmiddellik.

3. Sorg dat die bul (veral as dit net een bul is) afgelaai word in ‘n veilige kamp (met goeie drade) saam met ‘n ander bees of twee om hom geselskap te hou. Skoon water en goeie weiding (of goeie kwaliteit hooi of ruvoer) sal hom dadelik meer rustig maak sodat hy gouer gewoond raak aan die nuwe omgewing. Maak seker hy kry die water. Laat die bul met rus vir ten minste twee dae, maar hou elke dag ’n ogie oor hom om seker te maak dat u onmiddellik enige probleem wat mag opduik sal agterkom.

4. Indien dit onmoontlik is om die nuwe bul apart van ander bulle te hou, maak dan seker die kamp is groot genoeg sodat die jonger en ondergeskikte bul(le) kan wegkom van die dominante bulle.

5. U kan u bul beperk of omvattend verseker en/of u kan semen tap van die bul indien dit spesiale genetika is. Indien u bulle inbring vanaf ‘n siektevrye area na ‘n area waar siektes soos hartwater, rooiwater, galsiekte ens. endemies is, verseker eerder die bul omvattend vir ‘n jaar.

6. Skakel die bul dadelik in by u normale dip-, doseer- en inentingsprogram – ongeag van wat die vorige eienaar gedoen het.

7. Indien die bul kragvoer gevoer is voor die veiling en/of baie vet is, kry hom stelselmatig van die

kragvoer af. Gee hom byvoorbeeld die eerste week 8 kg/dag kragvoer, die tweede week 4kg/dag, die derde week 1kg/dag saam met sy toekomstige lek ad lib en die vierde week net sy normale lek. Vermy dit om die bul onmiddellik van vol kragvoer na geen kragvoer oor te skakel, aangesien dit sy korttermyn vrugbaarheid kan benadeel,

8. As dit moontlik is, hou die nuwe bul weg van ander bulle totdat hy by sy koeie kom, dit wil sê die bul behoort eers vir ‘n seisoen te werk voordat hy in die groter bultrop geplaas word.

9. Onthou dat ‘n bul wissel tussen 2 en 2½ jaar ouderdom. Hy kan dus gewig verloor as hy moet aanpas in sy nuwe omgewing, op gemiddelde weiding loop en nog moet dek ook.

10. Die ideaal is om die bul twee maande of langer voor u dekseisoen begin reeds op die plaas te hê, om sodoende voldoende tyd te hê om aan te pas in sy nuwe omgewing en voedingstoestande.

VOOR DIE DEKSEISOEN:1. Baie belangrik: Toets al u teelbulle drie tot ses weke

voor die dekseisoen begin vir vrugbaarheid en doen skedewasse vir trichomoniase en vibriose. Uit ‘n proef waar 10940 bulle getoets was vir geslagsgeskiktheid in Amerika, was ongeveer 20% van die bulle nie geskik vir gebruik nie. Normaalweg gaan u voor elke dekseisoen ten minste 10% bulle “verloor”. Identifiseer hulle voor die dekseisoen – die koste om dit te doen is baie minder as die kalwers wat u gaan verloor omdat u dit nie gedoen het nie. Toets selfs u “nuwe” bul ook – al is hy verkoop met ‘n vrugbaarheidssertifikaat – aangesien die effek van die stress van die veiling, die vervoer na en aanpassing by sy nuwe tuiste sy vrugbaarheid op die kort termyn kan beïnvloed.

2. Selfs in stelsels waar meerbulparings gebruik word is dit noodsaaklik om semen evaluasie van die bulle te doen, want dominante bulle met swak semen kan jonger bulle met goeie semen weg hou van die koeie.

3. Gaan u bulle deur voor die dekseisoen vir algemene gesondheid en kyk dat hulle stuktureel normaal is en dat hulle gang (loopvermoë) op geensins ongemaklik of abnormaal is nie.

4. Spuit die bulle twee maande voor die dekseisoen Vitamien A en Minerale (Multimin + Se + Cu). Embamin en Embavit (word deur die bek gedoseer) is ook handelsname wat gebruik kan word. Hierdie behandeling kan herhaal word na ongeveer twee maande.

5. Die bulle se kondisie behoort altyd 2,5 - 3,5 uit 5 te wees. Oorvoeding ly tot swaar, onfikse en lomp bulle wat se semen ook gewoonlik onder standaard is. Vet aanpakking in die nek van die skrotum is nadelig en lei tot swak termoregulering en gevolglik swak

concentrates the first week, 4kg/day the second week and 1kg/day the third week with his future lick ad lib and the fourth week only his normal lick. Do not switch the bull immediately from full feed concentrates to no concentrates, because it may impair his short-term fertility.

8. If possible, keep the new bull away from other bulls until you put him with his cows i.e. the bull should be worked for a season before he is placed in the greater bull group.

9. Remember that a bull changes teeth between 2 and 2 ½ years of age. He could therefore lose weight if he has to adapt to his new environment, be on average grazing and still have to cover cows.

10. Ideally the bull should arrive on the farm two months or more before the breeding season starts in order to have sufficient time to adjust to his new environment and feeding conditions.

BEFORE THE BREEDING SEASON:1. Important: Test all your breeding bulls for fertility,

three to six weeks before the mating season begins and do sheath washes for trichomoniasis and vibriosis. In a trial in America where 10940 bulls were tested for sexual readiness, about 20% of the bulls were not suitable for use. Normally you will “lose” at least 10% bulls before each breeding season. Identify them before the mating season – the cost to do this is much less than the calves that you will lose if you did not. Test your “new” bull as well – even if he was sold with a fertility certificate – since the effect of the stress of the sale and the transportation and adjustment to his new home can influence his fertility in the short term.

2. Even in systems where multi sire matings are used, it is essential to do semen evaluation of bulls, because dominant bulls with poor semen can keep younger bulls with good semen away from the cows.

3. Check your bulls before the breeding season for general health and see that they are structurally normal and that their walking ability is in no way uncomfortable or abnormal.

4. Inject the bulls two months before the mating season with Vitamin A and Minerals (Multimin + Se + Cu). Embamin and Embavit (dosed through the mouth) are brand names that can also be used. This treatment can be repeated after about two months.

5. The bulls’ condition should always be 2.5 to 3.5 out of 5. Overfeeding leads to heavy, clumsy and unfit bulls whose semen is usually below standard. Fat deposition in the neck of the scrotum is detrimental and leads to poor thermoregulation and consequently poor semen.

6. Malnutrition can also be a problem, but usually libido

will deteriorate before semen quality is negatively affected. If bulls are somewhat slim, start giving them supplementary feeding two months before the mating season starts. This can range from a production lick to 5 - 10 kg of concentrates per bull per day.

7. Vaccinate the bulls two months before the mating season begins against stiff-sickness and vibriosis.

DURING THE BREEDING SEASON:1. Observation of your bulls, especially young bulls,

during the mating season - but especially the first week or two, is very important. See if these bulls have mating prowess and whether they have libido. Young bulls are initially inexperienced but within a few days they should have mating ability. There are usually 10% bulls with low or no libido – identify these bulls and eliminate them.

2. In multi-sire mating herds, put older and younger males together, not bulls which are all the same age, to restrict fighting to a minimum. Put at least 3 - 4 bulls per 100 cows. For us it works to use one adult bull with two young bulls per 75 cows. In single sire mating herds, 30 - 40 cows should be allocated per mature bull for three months.

3. Good observation should take place during the breeding season in order to know immediately if bulls are sick or injured. If a bull had a fever due to red water, gall sickness, lumpy skin disease, three-day stiff-sickness, etc., his semen will probably be dead and it may take two months (and even longer) before he is fertile again, as spermatogenesis (the production of new semen) takes about 65 days. Replace such a bull immediately. Footrot during the breeding season should be treated immediately because it is a very painful condition and the bull will not mate before the footrot has been healed. Treat such a bull with a long-acting antibiotic. Check that your bulls stay healthy during the mating season.

4. Check carefully for injuries (especially hip, leg, hoof and penis injuries and swollen testicles) due to fighting or other reasons. Such injuries can possibly make a bull unsuitable for mating for the remainder of the breeding season. Replace a diseased or injured bull immediately and put him in a small hospital camp near the house. In multi sire mating herds, replace the bull, if possible, with a bull of about the same age.

5. Keep record of the cows covered (bull number, cow number and servicing date). Approximately 60% of cows should conceive in their first cycle. If more than 40% cows come on heat again after their first cycle (21 days), there may be a problem and it needs to be identified and corrected as soon as possible. If the problem occurs in a specific single sire mating herd,

Jong bulle is aanvanklik onervare maar binne ‘n paar dae behoort hulle dekbehendig te wees. Daar is gewoonlik 10% bulle met geen of swak libido – identifiseeer hierdie bulle en skakel hulle uit.

2. In meerbulparings troppe, sit ouer en jonger bulle saam, nie bulle wat almal ewe oud is nie, om bakleiery tot die minimum te beperk. Gebuik minstens 3 - 4 bulle per 100 koeie. Vir ons werk dit om een volwasse bul en twee jong bulle per 75 koeie te gebruik. In enkelbul dektroppe behoort 30 - 40 koeie per volwasse bul vir drie maande toegedeel te word.

3. Goeie observasie behoort gedoen te word gedurende die dekseisoen om dadelik te weet as bulle siek of beseer is. Indien ‘n bul ‘n koors reaksie gehad het as gevolg van rooiwater, galsiekte, knopvelsiekte, drie-dae-stywesiekte, ensovoorts, sal sy semen heel waarskynlik dood wees en dit kan twee maande (en selfs langer) neem voor hy weer vrugbaar is, aangesien spermatogenese (die produksie van nuwe semen) ongeveer 65 dae neem. Vervang onmiddellik so ‘n bul. Vrotpootjie gedurende die dekseisoen moet dadelik behandel word want dit is ‘n baie pynlike toestand en die bul sal nie dek voordat die vrotpootjie gesond is nie. Behandel so ’n bul met ‘n langwerkende antibiotika. Kyk dat u bulle gesond bly gedurende die dekseisoen.

4. Let veral ook op vir beserings (veral op heup-, been-, klou- en penis beserings asook geswelde testikels) as gevolg van bakleiery of ander redes. Sulke beserings kan ‘n bul moontlik ongeskik maak vir dekking vir die res van die dekseisoen. Vervang onmiddellik ’n siek of beseerde bul en plaas hom in ’n hospitaalkampie naby die huis. By meerbulparings troppe, vervang die bul, indien moontlik, met ’n bul van ongeveer dieselfde ouderdom.

5. Hou rekord van die koeie wat gedek word (bulnommer, koeinommer en dekdatum). Ongeveer 60% koeie behoort beset te raak in hulle eerste siklus. Indien meer as 40% koeie weer op hitte kom na hul

eerste siklus (21 dae), is daar moontlik ‘n probleem en moet dit so gou as moontlik geïdentifiseer en reggestel word. Indien die probleem in ’n spesifieke enkelbulparing trop voorkom, vervang onmiddellik die bul. Indien die probleem in ’n spesifieke meerbulparing trop voorkom, mag dit moontlik wees dat ’n dominante bul onvrugbaar is of ’n ander probleem het. Probeer om daardie bul te identifiseer en vervang hom onmiddellik.

6. Dektroppe behoort nie langs mekaar te loop nie. Bulle baklei deur die draad en ‘n bul met goeie libido sal deur ‘n gewone draad heining breek na ‘n koei op hitte. Met twee jaar oud en jonger bulle kan nog ‘n kans gevat word as die heining baie goed is.

NA DIE DEKSEISOEN:1. Honger die bulle uit in aparte sterk krale vir drie tot

vier dae (sonder kos of water). Neem die bulle dan een-een na die “bulkamp” waar goeie weiding en skoon water vrylik beskikbaar is. Bulle behoort in hierdie omstandighede te vergeet van die koeie en ook meer lus te wees vir vreet as om te baklei. Die bulkamp moet ook veilig wees sonder te veel klippe, slote en gate. Daar moet ook genoeg spasie wees vir bulle om vir mekaar pad te gee.

2. Die ideaal is om bulle twee-twee (een ouer en een jonger) in ’n kamp te plaas en nie almal saam in een kamp nie. Veral waardevolle bulle behoort apart gehou te word. In die praktyk gebeur dit egter dat bulle tussen dekseisoene saam gegooi móét word en die eienaar kan dan nie veel meer doen as oë toeknyp en hoop vir so min as moontlik beserings nie.

3. Die bulkamp kan veilig gemaak word deur dubbelheinings (3 meter uit mekaar) te span teen die kante waar daar ander beeste langsaan loop. Elektriese heinings kan ook help, alhoewel meer nasorg nodig is.

4. Maak voorsiening vir genoeg vreetspasie by die lekbakke of wanneer beperkte aanvulling gedoen word, aangesien bulle meer baklei en ‘n groter “persoonlike” ruimte nodig het. Tussen 0.5m en 1m vreetspasie per bul behoort voldoende te wees. Omgedopte vragmotor- of trekkerbande is goeie lekbakke – dit is onvernietigbaar en kan ook nie die bulle beseer as hulle baklei nie.

5. Wanneer daar met die bultrop gewerk word, maak seker dat al die bulle nie in ‘n bondel gejaag (vasgedruk) word nie, aangesien hulle gewoonlik baklei onder sulke omstandighede. Bulle wat mekaar vir maande aanvaar het, kan skielik begin baklei as hulle rondgeskuif word – sogenaamde “verplasings gedrag”.

6. Moenie bulle almal saam met die melkkoeie of ‘n ander koei laat loop tussen die dekseisoene nie. Die

6. Mating groups should not be in camps next to each other. Bulls fight through the fence and a bull with good libido will break through an ordinary wire fence to get to a cow on heat. With two year old and younger bulls you may still take a chance when the wire fence is very good.

AFTER THE BREEDING SEASON:1. Starve the bulls in separate strong pens for three to

four days (without food or water). Then take the bulls one by one to the bull camp where good pasture and clean water is freely available. Bulls in these circumstances should forget about the cows and should also be more likely to eat than fight. The bull camp must also be safe without too many stones, trenches and holes. There must be enough space for bulls to avoid each other.

2. The ideal is to place bulls in pairs (one older and one younger) in a camp and not all together in one camp. Especially valuable bulls should be kept separate. In practice, however, it happens that bulls must be put together and then the owner can not do much more than close his eyes and hope for as few as possible injuries.

3. The bull camp can be made safe by putting up double fences (3 meters apart) on the sides where cattle are in adjacent camps. Electric fences can also help, although more after care is required.

4. Allow adequate feeding space at the troughs or when limited supplement feeding is given, as bulls fight more and more “personal” space is needed. Between 0.5m and 1m feeding space per bull should be sufficient. Inside-out truck or tractor tires are good troughs – they are indestructible and cannot hurt the bulls when they fight.

5. When working with a bull group, make sure that they are not chased into a bunch (close together), as they usually fight under such circumstances. Bulls that accepted each other for months, can suddenly start fighting when they are moved around – the so-called “displacement behavior”.

6. Do not run the bulls with the dairy cows or with another cow between mating seasons. The bulls can, by mating the same cow, get infected with venereal diseases.

GENERAL COMMENTS:1. For every ten bulls you use it is advisable to reserve

a bull for bulls that may get sick or injured or must

be replaced during the breeding season for other reasons.

2. Bulls from most medium framed breeds can be used as early as age 14 months if they weigh at least 420kg, their scrotum circumference is at least 340mm and their semen tested positive. These young bulls should be able to cover 10-20 cows in three months.

3. Normally bulls can be used until ten years of age. Older bulls can also be used, but then special observation is needed to see if the bulls still work well.

4. Adult bulls of medium frame weigh about 800 - 1000kg, i.e. at least 1.5 to 2 LSU. Keep this in mind for the size of your bull camp.

5. Enjoy your bull – in 90% of the cases you should have no problem.

dr ModitjanaPaileI found myself with this beautiful breed, the Beefmaster, by fate. About 3 years ago I saw a Beefmaster auction advertised, and I became interested. I had very little information about the breed. To cut a long story short, the auction was Big 5’s and I bought myself 20 heifers. Among the heifers 10 were registered and I only realized this later when the Beefmaster society sent me certificates for my heifers. Breeding registered cattle was not really my plan, so I then had to make up my mind whether I was going to destroy what I had by crossing the registered heifers with another breed, irrespective how good that breed is.

I decided to look for a good bull, and I went to an auction of Mr Ungerer in Nigel and got myself a bull. To me he is a very nice bull.

About a month back Mr Kerneels van Rensburg came to my farm to inspect my cattle. I’m committing myself to take good care of my Beefmaster cattle. I have four men helping me at the farm, particularly during my absence. I think I must mention their names. They are Willie, Adam, Fomfi and Amos. I owe my succes or failure to these men.

I’m still learning about this magnificent breed.

I am a dentist by profession. I’m 58 years old and thinking already about retiring so that I can

dedicate my time to my cattle that I love so much. At the moment I’m practicing my profession

in Secunda. My farm is in Kwena Basin, a beautiful valley situated between Machadodorp and

Man in Brakpan stuur sy vrou om te gaan inkopies doen. Sy kom terug met 3 kaste bier, 2 kaste brandewyn, 1 kas cane, 1 kas Coke en 2 brode. ‘n Multi-miljoenêr verjaar en besluit om ‘n buitelug-partytjie langs sy privaat krokkedildam te gooi. Later die aand toe almal lekker getrek is, kondig hy aan dat hy ‘n duisend rand sal gee aan enigeen wat met die krokkedil in sy dam sal stoei. Australiese en Suid Afrikaanse beesboere stem ooreen sover dit funksionele ekonomies doeltreffende vleisbeeste aangaan, sê Graham Hart.

Vanweë sy genetiese samestelling kan die Suid Afrikaanse Beefmaster vergelyk word met ‘n pot wat op drie bene staan.

EERSTE BEEN

Die eerste been is die Lasater Beefmaster filosofie en die telers se vermoeë om dit in hul telingsprogamme toe te pas. Hiermee word Beefmasters geteel wat konstant in die kommersiële omgewing winsgewend is.

Seleksie word toegespits op die ekonomies belangrike eienskappe, asook visuele evaluasie, rekordhouding van produksie en reproduksie en die wetenskaplike analise van veral vrugbaarheid, melk, groei, temperament, bouvorm en gehardheid. Hierdie gebalanseerde benadering voorkom die gevaar dat vir ‘n enkele eienskap, soos die oorbeklemtoning van maklik meetbare groei, geselekteer word.

TWEEDE BEEN

Die tweede been van die Beefmaster pot is die koeikudde en veral die basis koeikudde. Meeste Beefmaster telers

was en is steeds baie suksesvolle beesboere met groot effektiewe koeikuddes en hoë herkonsepsiewaardes. Hierdie Brahman x Bos taurus koeie het ‘n stewige basis gevorm vir die Beefmaster se opgraderingsprogram en die ontwikkeling van ‘n ras oor baie generasies (basis en aanhangsel A, B, C en SP). Die doel is ‘n koei wat sonder bystand jaarliks in ‘n kommersiële omgewing ‘n goeie kalf speen.

DERDE BEEN

Die kuddevaars vorm die derde been van die genetiese pot. Van die vroeë 1980’s is semen van geselekteerde bulle in die VSA en Zimbabwe op die basis koeie en opvolgende generasies gebruik. Lokale aanhangsel B en C bulle is geteel wat ‘n impetus aan die ras gegee het, omdat hulle uit koeie onder plaaslike omstandighede geteel is. Die SA Beefmaster het ‘n verdere genetiese hupstoot in die laat 1990’s gekry met die byvoeging van semen van die Australiese Droughtmaster.

DIE DROUGHTMASTER

Die Droughtmaster is vir verskeie redes op dieselfde beginsels as die Beefmaster in Queensland, Australië, ontwikkel. Monty Atkinson, die insteller van die Droughtmaster, het ‘n vleisbees gesoek wat aangepas

was vir die tropiese klimaat, wat weerstandig teen die bosluisaanslae was en goeie vleiseienskappe gehad het. Die invoer van Brahmane in 1931 het Atkinson en ander in staat gestel om hul teelprogramme te verbreed en die beste eienskappe van die Brahman en die Britse rasse te kombineer.

Tom Lasater, die ontwikkelaar en stigter van die Beefmaster, en Atkinson het gekorrespondeer en gedagtes uitgeruil oor die vroeë ontwikkeling van hul onderskeie rasse. Na ‘n besoek aan Lasater en onenigheid oor patentregte, het die Australiërs besluit om hul ras die Droughtmaster te noem en is die telersgenootskap in 1962 gestig.

Die Australiërs het streng veekundige maatreëls om die invoer van nuwe siektes in hul land te voorkom.

Weens die gelyksoortigheid tussen die twee rasse in beide hul fenotipiese voorkoms en seleksieprogramme, het die Beefmaster Beestelersgenootskap van SA by die Registrateur van Veeverbetering, Keith Ramsey, aansoek gedoen vir die eksklusiewe regte om Droughtmaster semen in te voer. Hierdie is in 1997 toegestaan op voorwaarde dat die nageslag as Beefmasters aangeteken word, aangesien hy nie bereid was om twee soortgelyke name vir beesrasse toe te laat nie.

INDRUKKE

‘n Groep Beefmaster telers (Dennis Staal, Willie Nel, Johan van der Nest en die skrywer, Graham Hart) het in 1999 ‘n aantal Droughtmaster telers in Queensland onder leiding van die Droughtmaster se rasdirekteur, Neil Donaldson, besoek. Hiermee wou eerstehandse inligting oor die ras en die toestande waaronder hulle moet funksioneer ingewin word, asook om bulle te selekteer waarvan semen verkry kon word om in Suid-Afrika te gebruik.

Die telers was baie vriendelik en het uit hul pad gegaan om die Suid Afrikaners hul plase en diere te wys. Die kuddes wat besoek was, was baie groot en in ‘n uitstekende kondisie en was op aangeplante weidings, hoofsaaklik bloubuffelsgras (Cenchrus ciliaris) wat van Suid Afrika ingevoer was. Die Cenchrus was saam met die inheemse peulplant, brigalow (Acacia harpophylla) op ontboste grond gesaai met die grond wat gevolglik baie vrugbaar is en geen bemesting dus nodig het nie. Een van die telers, mnr. Childs, het gesê dat hy nie vir die volgende 20 jaar hoef te bemes nie. Vir die Suid Afrikaners was dit groot nuus, aangesien baie kunsmis plaaslik nodig is om dieselfde resultate te kry. Een van die boere wie besoek is, het die stikstofvlakke in die grond gehandhaaf deur die vestiging van boomlusern (Leucaena leucocephala) in sy weidings.

Die Droughtmaster koeie wat hulle gesien het was vroulik met gladde haarkleed en indrukwekkende kalwers. Hulle het egter groter rame as die Suid Afrikaanse koeie, waarskynlik weens die beter voeding wat hulle geniet het.

Die bulle, waarvan meeste poenas is, was ook indrukwekkend met hul gladde rooi hare en goeie bespiering. Die seleksie van bulle vir Suid Afrikaanse toestande was beperk deur oormatige swaar skedes in andersins baie goeie diere.

Die belangrike Japanese mark vereis ‘n swaar karkas met goeie marmering, met die gevolg dat die Australiërs neig om vir groter later ryp tipe beeste te selekteer.

Ten spyte van die beperkings kon die Suid Afrikaners uitstekende vroegryp mediumgrootte bulle met skoon onderlyne identifiseer om ons Suid Afrikaanse Beefmaster genetika te komplimenteer.

Daarop volgende besoeke deur ander Beefmaster telers aan Australië het tot gevolg gehad dat die semen van verskeie Droughtmaster bulle in Beefmaster kuddes gebruik is. Hierdie het die Suid Afrikaanse genepoel verbreed, veral wat die poena-faktor en soliede rooi kleur behels. ‘n Rooi kleur is nie ‘n vereiste in die Beefmaster nie, maar SA beesboere verkies rooi diere met die gevolg dat die SA Beefmaster toenemend vas rooi is. Enige beesboer wie geïnteresseerd is om te evalueer oor hoe die Droughtmaster genetika in SA gedoen het, kan die plaaslike telerskantoor skakel vir ‘n lys van telers met Droughtmaster invloed in hul kuddes.

TEN SLOTTE

Die Suid Afrikaanse Beefmaster se “driepootpot” bevat ‘n breë genepoel. Hierdie word onderwerp aan die Lasater filosofie om die tipe dier te produseer wat aangepas is by die SA toestande. Die Beefmaster program is gebaseer op oorlewing van die beste, met die gevolg dat die swakkes uitgeslag word en die goeies in die teelkuddes bly.

Die Beefmaster is onbeskaamd ‘n voordurend ont-wikkelende ras. Die produktiwiteit van die Beefmaster koei, hetsy basis of aanhangsel A, B of C, word hoog geag en gewaardeer. Ons gebruik aanhangsel B, C en SP bulle om nie die goeie eienskappe wat uit die koeie voortvloei te verloor nie. Ons teel nie tot ‘n punt waar daarop aangedring word om slegs SP bulle te gebruik nie, maar om ‘n breë energieke genepoel te hê wat aangepas is by alle Suid Afrikaanse omstandighede.

Verder, is ons gemiddelde kuddegrootte die grootste van al die rasse in Suid-Afrika, wat ons in staat stel om hoë seleksiedruk toe te pas. Die belangrikste is dat diere uit ‘n genepoel geselekteer kan word om wins in die kommersiële omgewing te maak.

Cross-breeding with BeefmastersOur original herd was purchased from a neighbouring farmer and consisted of fifty cows, all of which were Afrikaner/Shorthorn/Hereford cross-types, along with two purebred Hereford bulls. Due to the purchase of the

Hereford bulls, and the fact that the cow herd already contained a relatively strong influence of Bos-taurus/European breeds from the Hereford and Shorthorn, two purebred Bonsmara bulls were also purchased. Although historically a composite breed and not strictly Bos-indicus, it was felt that the genetic composition of the Bonsmara still offered sufficient genetic variation from the European genes to yield satisfactory hybrid vigour.

For many years we used only Hereford and Bonsmara bulls, but since around 2001 we have been phasing out the Bonsmara bulls and replacing them with Beefmaster bulls. Reasons for this include the opening of new conveniently-situated Beefmaster studs in our area, and also our personal opinion that the national average prices for Bonsmara bulls was becoming artificially inflated due to new role-players in that market. A three-

breed composite such as the Beefmaster, alone offers 63% retained heterosis, delivering excellent weaner-calves and replacement heifers of extremely high quality. When cross-bred with a breed of European origin, such as Hereford-type cows, the results are impressively visible in the offspring.

From the beginning, the herd had to be simple to manage and care for under extensive conditions. Simplifying our management includes the way in which cows of differing type are graded for the different breeds of bulls. Our herd contains no purebred cows, so the cows are simply separated on the basis of visual appraisal, based on their similarity to a particular breed. Originally, cows with a Hereford white-face or strong Shorthorn colouration were simply put to Bonsmara bulls, whilst the cows with predominantly brown faces were covered by Hereford bulls. The HV in calves born of Beefmaster bulls on Hereford-type cows is simply impressive.

The herd currently stands at approximately 400 breeding cows, with the Bonsmara/Beefmaster-type cows being covered by Hereford bulls, and the Hereford-type cows covered by Beefmaster bulls. Grading of the cows is still done on basis of visual appraisal only. Our herd has a single annual breeding season which lasts from December 1st until February 1st. Cows are culled annually based on conception, and then any other undesirable characteristics. We’ve still got two Bonsmara bulls serving but this is probably their last breeding season.

One area where HV is very effective on our particular crosses is in the elimination of the “pink-eye” trait of Herefords. Calves which are born with a white face more often than not have a ring of brown hair around both eyes, with brown pigmentation in the sensitive skin surrounding the eyes. This darker pigmentation greatly reduces eye sensitivity to the sun, and the eyes also seem to be less sensitive to infections. From a management

I farm with my father Donnie Holmes on 3 000 ha in the Tweespruit district of the eastern Free State.

It is a mixed farming operation consisting of approximately 1 500 ha arable land, the marginal

sections of which have been planted to Smutsfinger pasture, and the rest of which is rotated

annually between maize, sunflower and oats for green feed. The remaining 1 500 ha is natural

veld grazing consisting of predominantly Themeda triandra or Rooigras. It is a family farm which has

been farmed by the Holmeses since 1903.

point of view, this effect of HV has significantly cut time and costs involved in dealing with and treating problematic eyes in the herd.

The cross-breeding programme is also allowing for the relatively rapid eradication of horned animals in the herd. As the naturally-polled trait has a heritability of 100%, naturally-polled Hereford and Beefmaster bulls produce a naturally-polled calf, the majority of which will have dark pigmentation around their eyes! As this naturally-polled trait trickles down into the cows as well, its rate of heritability is exponential and relatively rapid progress is being made in eliminating horned animals. The elimination of horns in the herd greatly reduces stress and handling times of the cows and improves ease of management. Much time, effort and stress is also saved with naturally-polled weaner-calves which do not need to be de-horned.

One important thing to keep in mind about Beefmaster is that the three-breed composites, like Beefmasters

(comprised of Hereford, Shorthorn and Brahman), retain their heterosis even when re-bred. This means you can come back generation after generation with Beefmasters, and the jump from hybrid vigour remains in the cattle at 63%, generation after generation. This is a huge advantage over a straight-bred system.

Our aim is to breed fertile cows and weaner calves with the above-mentioned positive visual and physical traits, which wean as heavily as possible with maximum resistance to illnesses and diseases under extensive conditions, and a minimal management requirement. At present this particular cross-breeding system is performing very well in this region. Wetenskap en ondervinding het ons geleer dat ons produksie doeltreffend kan verhoog deur die gebruik van kruisteling. Beefmasters is die ideale ras vir kruisteling programme met

vleisbeeste om ‘n verskeidenheid van redes.Die belangrikste van hierdie en uniek tot Beefmaster,

is die filosofie wat met ontstaan van die ras geformuleer is, naamlik die ses vereiste ekonomies belangrike

eienskappe (Vrugbaarheid, Temperament, Gewig, Bouvorm, Gehardheid en Melkproduksie.). My

oupa het hierdie filosofie ontwikkel terwyl hy die Beefmaster ontwikkel het in die 1930’s

in ‘n poging om die doeltreffendheid van produksie in ‘n uitdagende omgewing te maksimaliseer. Ongelooflik, die Lasater

filosofie is nog net so toepaslik 80 jaar later as wat dit toe was. Hierdie konsep is veral relevant in ‘n

kruistelingsprogram wat uitdruklik gebruik word om meer vleis, meer doeltreffend te produseer. Dit, sonder inagneming van baie van die nie-ekonomies belangrike seleksie kriteria wat dikwels in ‘n stoet omgewing gebruik word, soos byvoorbeeld kleur, grootte, en stamboom.

Nog ‘n eienskap in Beefmasters wat dit ideaal maak vir kruisteling, is dat dit maklik aanpas by bykans enige omgewing en steeds die produksie doeltreffendheid lewer waarvoor hulle bekend is. Of jy dus in ‘n baie koue omgewing, soos die kudde van oorsprong op my oupa se plaas in die Oos-Colorado, of in die woestyn, of in tropiese toestande boer, hulle sal presteer. Dit beteken dat jy hulle kan gebruik op jou bestaande kudde en jou nie bekommer oor die aanpasbaarheid van die nageslag nie.

Heterose of basterkrag is geweldig belangrik in die oorweging van Beefmasters in ‘n kruisteling program. Dit is eenvoudig gedefinieer as ‘n toename in die prestasie van kruisras beeste bo die prestasie van suiwergeteelde beeste. As gevolg van Beefmasters se ontstaan as ‘n 3-ras samestelling (gewoonlik uitgedruk as ongeveer 50% Brahman, 25% Hereford en 25% Korthoring), is Beefmasters se behoue heterose veel hoër as die van suiwergeteelde beeste of ‘n tweerigting kruising.

‘n Beefmasterbul toe. In plaas daarvan dat die basterkrag (heterose) verlore gaan, bly dit behoue en jy kan elke keer weer ‘n Beefmaster bul gebruik sonder dat hulle ooit doeltreffendheid verloor. Die stelsel is pragtig in sy eenvoud en ontsagwekkend in sy resultate.

Erfdwang is nog ‘n belangrike oorweging in kruisteling met Beefmasters. Dit word gedefinieer as die vermoë van een van die ouers om meer eienskappe oor te dra na sy nageslag as die ander ouer. Alhoewel dit nie wetenskaplik is nie, het ek dit baie keer gesien, in baie verskillende lande, dat wanneer jy ‘n Beefmaster bul met enige ander tipe koei teel, die resultaat soos ‘n Beefmaster lyk.

Ek deel graag ‘n interessante storie. Ons het ‘n uitgebreide program in Thailand onderneem om Beefmasters daar te vestig oor die afgelope paar jaar. Toe die eerste F1 kalwers gebore was uit Beefmaster semen en inheemse kommersiële koeie, het hulle net soos Beefmasters gelyk. Ek het toe ‘n foto tussen die Beefmaster telers in die VSA versprei en iemand het gesê dat dit seker ‘n suiwergeteelde embrio kalf is. Ek het hom egter reggehelp deur te sê dat dit slegs 50% Beefmaster was, die gevolg van ‘n eenmalige gebruik van L Bar genetika!

Deels te wyte aan behoue heterose (basterkrag) en deels weens erfdwang, het Beefmasters net daardie klein bietjie “towerkrag” wat hulle ‘n eerste-kruis ‘n treffer maak. Dit is veral waar ten opsigte van gewone kommersiële beeste (plainer cattle), waar jy ‘n groot verbetering in die eerste kruising kry en die nageslag wat lyk soos ‘n Beefmaster.

Beefmasters bied die perfekte kruising met Engelse of Europese rasse, dit komplimenteer hulle sterk eienskappe soos vrugbaarheid en karkasgehalte, maar verbeter hulle produksie doeltreffendheid. Dieselfde kan gesê word van Bos Indicus beeste, waar Beefmaster hul bouvorm en vleiskwaliteit kan verbeter, terwyl dit hul sterkpunte soos hitte verdraagsaamheid en lae koste van produksie kan komplimenteer.

Ek sou dink dat daar ‘n geweldige geleentheid in Suid-Afrika bestaan vir kruising van Beefmasters met kommersiële Bonsmara-beeste wat, alhoewel met soortgelyke doelwitte in gedagte, saamgestel

heterose van 62,5% hê, maar dit is my kontensie dat dit eintlik hoër is as dit, omdat die “Brahman” in Beefmasters eintlik verwys na die Bos Indicus bloed, en wat ingebring is in die Beefmaster-ras in die vorm van die Nelore beeste uit Brasilië en Ghir en Guzerat uit Indië. Dit sou eintlik die behoue heterose ten opsigte van Beefmasters ietwat nader aan 75% bring.

Wat beteken dit eintlik in finansiële terme? Kom ons sê jou kruisteling stelsel het gelei tot ongeveer 67% van die maksimum heterose. ‘n Toename van 16% in die kilo’s per kalf gespeen vir elke koei blootgestel aan teling kan verwag word bo die rasgemiddeld van beide ouers. Indien die verwagte gemiddelde gewig van 2 suiwer rasse, dus 227 kg is per kalf gespeen vir elke koei blootgestel aan teling, dan kan deur daardie rasse saam in ‘n 2-ras rotasie kruisteling stelsel te gebruik ’n 263 kg kalf gespeen word per koei blootgestel. Dit is ‘n 36 kilogram verbetering deur net gebruik te maak van heterose. In die VSA, ons noem dit ‘n “free lunch” want daar is geen bykomende koste vir die verkryging van hierdie voordeel nie.

Afgesien van bloot gewig, kan nog ‘n finansiële manifestasie van die krag van die Beefmasters in kruisteling in die lengte van die produksiesiklus gevind word, veral in die warm en tropiese omgewings. ‘n Goeie voorbeeld waarmee ek persoonlik vertroud is, is in Brasilië, waar ons omvattend gewerk het saam met ‘n Beefmaster teler om die ras daar te vestig. Hulle tradisionele produk is 3-jarige, veldafgeronde osse, wat direk van die plaas af bemark word. Hulle verse kalf dienooreenkomstig op 3 jaar oud. Deur Beefmasters op hul inheemse Nelore-beeste te gebruik, was hulle in staat om nie net gewigte te verhoog nie, maar ook om die tyd, waarin die teikengewig vir slagting of kalwing bereik word, met 6 maande te verminder! Met die tweede kruis, is dit verder verminder tot ‘n volle jaar. Wat sou die uitskakeling van een jaar se produksie-uitgawes werd wees in die berekening van jou netto wins?

Die wonderlikste ding oor die gebruik van Beefmasters in ‘n kruisteling program is dat jy nie ‘n klomp van die ingewikkelde rotasie teling hoef te doen nie. Sit net ‘n Beefmaster bul by die koei van jou keuse en die gevolg is dat die kalwers ‘n geweldige hupstoot van basterkrag (heterose) kry. Maar die regte towerkrag vind plaas wanneer jy daardie Beefmaster-kruiskoei terugbring na

Opsommend, kruisteling is ‘n ideale manier om produksie doeltreffendheid goedkoop in ‘n vleisbeesboerdery te verbeter. Beefmasters is die beste keuse om hierdie voordeel te maksimeer omdat hulle so baie goeie eienskappe saambring.

Soos die jare kom en gaan, kom en gaan ook Kersfees en Nuwe Jaar en ons wens mekaar voorspoed en geluk toe. Ek wens julle elkeen baie voorspoed toe vir die jaar wat kom, die

belangrikste is dat ons almal gesond is en ons families bymekaar is.

Die wêreld verander so vinning dat wanneer ek dink ek het nuwe nuus, is dit al weer ou nuus. “Daar is ‘n wêreldwye voedseltekort, Israel gaan Iran een of ander tyd aanval, Amerika gaan betrokke raak, kos en water gaan baie duur en baie kosbaar word. As Israel oorlog verklaar en deur Amerika ondersteun word, gaan die wêreld bevolking met 20 – 30% val, voedselhulp vir Afrika gaan opdroog terwyl Europa steeds sal sukkel om tussen sy eie grense te oorleef. Rusland en die Noord-Europese lande sal die nuwe super-moondhede word. Die afname in die wêreldbevolking as ‘n gevolg van interne revolusies in sekere lande soos China, Indië en Afrika, sal lei tot ‘n afname in werkloosheid, veral in lande wat groot bronne vir militêre operasies het. “

Hoe lyk dit vir ‘n veranderde wêreld? Dit is ‘n scenario wat kan gebeur as ons op die huidige koers voortgaan. Vir ons bly die belangrikste om beeste te teel met toewyding

en eerlikheid. Daar sal altyd kopers wees en welaf mense wat ‘n goeie biefstuk sal waardeer. Soos ons sien met die graanpryse wat styg, sal ons oorlewingsvermoë wees om te produseer met so min as moontlik hulpbronne, want die meeste mielies word gebruik in die rooivleis- en hoenderbedryf. Hongersnood veroorsaak revolusies en groot besighede en regerings gaan hierdie hulpbron meer en meer gebruik om die situasie van wêreldrevolusie te keer. Mielies, sonneblom en koring gaan al meer in aanvraag wees, ons moet dus ons vee in ‘n posisie hê om met minder graan afgerond te kom. Dus, ten spyte van baie veranderinge bly die belangrikste beginsels altyd dieselfde.

Ons diere het oor die jare produseer onder natuurlike toestande met die minste ingryping, om nog steeds ‘n baie goeie produk in die slaghuis te laat hang. Ons hou volgende jaar, op die 21ste Februarie, ‘n veiling saam met Jannie Schabort van JNB Beefmasters, die Elmic en JNB Somerfees Veiling. Hier bied ons hoofsaaklik vroulike diere aan met ‘n paar bulle vir mense wat nog kort is of hulle bulle vroeg in die seisoen wil koop om aan te pas. Ons hoofveiling in Augustus gaan voort soos altyd.

Die hoofdoel met die neem van foto’s van beeste is gewoonlik vir advertensies, maar

dit kan ook vir ‘n artikel of rekords wees. Aangesien dié foto’s ‘n vertoonvenster van die teler se beeste is, moet kwaliteit foto’s van kwaliteit diere geplaas word om die maksimale impak te kry. Omdat dit ook ‘n ras verteenwoordig, bring dit ‘n verantwoordelikheid teenoor die res van die telers. Mense kyk graag na foto’s en lees minder graag lang artikels. Die taak kan aan professionele fotograwe oorgelaat word, maar soms doen daardie spesiale oomblik op ‘n ander tyd hom voor om ‘n treffer prentjie vas te vang. Foto’s moet vooraf beplan word, sodat dit wat jy wil aanbied beklemtoon word. Hier volg ‘n paar wenke.

TOERUSTING‘n Goeie kamera met ‘n zoomlens (35 – 105mm) en ‘n polariserende filter bly ‘n goeie belegging. Die filter is om ongewensde glans (“glare”) van weerkaatsende lig weg te neem en om die lug blouer te maak. Maar selfs die hedendaagse kompakte “mik en druk” kameras neem verbasend goeie foto’s. Digitale kameras het die vryheid gebring om sommer baie foto’s teen geen ekstra koste te neem. ‘n Rekenaar met ‘n program waarmee die voorwerp in die foto’s onder andere korrek in die raampie geposisioneer kan word, foto’s gesuperimponeer kan

word (een binne ‘n ander), byskrifte bygesit kan word en kleure en detail verskerp kan word, is die ander nodige komponent. Daar is egter ook die onetiese kant, waar foute van beeste deur manipulering van foto’s reg “gedokter” kan word en dit bring die oneerlikheid van die teler na vore.

TYD VAN DIE DAGDiere en die omgewing vertoon baie beter in die vroeë en hoog somermaande. Die diere se voedingskondisie is dan gewoonlik goed en hul hare is glad. Later is die gras lank en kan dit gedeeltes van die diere verberg, terwyl winterfoto’s dikwels vaal vertoon en die diere hul glans verloor. Neem foto’s vroeg in die voormiddag of laat namiddag, want die definisie, kleure en kontras is dan skerper.

DIERESyaansigte met die dier wat so 45° skuins na voor in die rigting van die kamera kyk, bly steeds gewild, want meeste van die verlangde eienskappe kan so ten toon gestel word. Dit is belangrik dat die dier se agterpoot naaste aan die kamera die verste terug moet staan, sodat die skrotum of uier sigbaar is. Ouer bulle en swaardragtige koeie en verse vertoon meer indrukwekkend as diere in hul puberteit. Party diere is ook meer fotogenies as ander. Sak en hou die kamera so 1 tot 1.5 m bo die grond om ‘n groter en sterker beeld te kry. Dit is frustrerend om

foto’s te probeer neem as die diere honger is en kop omlaag net wil vreet. ‘n Dier se aandag kan getrek word deur ‘n onnatuurlike klank, soos om klippies in ‘n bottel of blik te skud.

AGTERGRONDHierdie dra baie by tot die boodskap. Natuurlike veld of iets treffend soos ‘n mooi vlei, bome, berge, dam of wolke skep ‘n stemming. As daar ander diere ook in die agtergrond is, poog om eenvormigheid in die groep te kry.

KREATIWITEITBestudeer tydskrifte, vorige joernale, advertensies en selfs boeke oor natuurlewe om idees te kry oor wat treffend is en wat misluk. Wees daagliks met ‘n kunstenaarsoog op die uitkyk vir daardie spesiale situasie wanneer ‘n dier of diere ‘n unieke beeld vorm, bv. ‘n weerkaatsing in ‘n dam, silhoeët teen skemerlig, aankomende donderstorm of diere saam met voëls.

WAT WERK NIE‘n Swak dier en ‘n dier in ‘n verkeerde houding, bv. wegkyk, verkeerd staan, gedraaide oor of een wat stap. Dowwe kontraste weens swak beligting, oorbeligting en foto’s wat uit fokus is. Foto’s met die son reg van bo. ‘n Besige of onnatuurlike agtergrond soos mense, voertuie, geboue of krale. ‘n Gebrek aan eenvormigheid tussen beeste. Skewe horison waar die kamera nie waterpas met die grond gehou is nie.

TEN SLOTTEFotografie van beeste kan ‘n genotvolle en bevredigende stokperdjie word, maar vereis dikwels baie geduld en tyd, omdat die diere nie begrip vir jou bedoelings het nie. Ontwikkel ‘n kunstenaarsoog, wat konstant op die uitkyk is vir daardie spesiale komposisie, houding, aksie, kleur, stemming, harmonie en balans. Hou die kamera byderhand en neem sommer baie foto’s.

2012 Sal as ‘n swak en moeilike jaar in die Vrystaat onthou word, waar meeste dele slegs ‘n derde van hulle jaarlikse reënval ontvang het. Dit het druk geplaas op graan-opbrengste en groot kommernis oor beskikbare weiding, die faktore het ‘n negatiewe invloed gehad op die besteebare inkomste van boere in die algemeen.

Nieteenstaande die bogenoemde het die Beefmaster veilings suksesvol afgeloop in die Vrystaat. Die pryse behaal was op laer vlakke as verlede jaar, maar meeste van die aanbiedinge is van die hand gesit wat dui op ‘n goeie vraag na Beefmaster beeste en ‘n geweldige toename in hul gewildheid as beeste wat kan presteer onder kommersiële toestande. Menigte teler kan dan ook getuig dat konsepsies en speenmassas uitstaande was onder die moeilike omstandighede, ‘n pluimpie vir telers en hul Beefmasters.

Vrystaat Beefmaster Klub het in April vergader met ‘n goeie bywoning van negentien telers en belangstellendes. Die vergadering was geweldig positief, waar vertroue in die bestaande strukture uitgespreek is en ook dan onderneem is om die strukture te ondersteun en Beefmasters as die No. 1 vleisbeesras te bemark. ‘n Groot dankie aan die Raad,

Helga en Elaine vir hul bydrae tot ons almal se sukses as telers.

Opwindende dinge word beplan vir die nuwe jaar. Die nasionale keurderskursus word aangebied in die Vrystaat deur Human en Quardsen Beefmasters in die derde week van Februarie 2013. Merk asseblief jul kalenders vir die uitstekende geleentheid om eerstehands met Beefmaster kennis te maak. Die “ou manne” kan dit gerus ook bywoon om hul insette te lewer en saam te kuier. ‘n Uitstappie van die klub gaan gereël word vroeg in die nuwe jaar, maar meer hieroor later . . .

Die volgende Vrystaters kan geluk gewens word met hul bydrae tot die uitbou van die ras, Arthur Gilbert wat herverkies is as President van die Genootskap, Dennis Staal wat as Beefmaster Persoonlikheid aangewys is vir die Jaar en Piet Human wie se bul die top presteerder was van alle deelnemende rasse by die Veldbulklub in Vrede.

Die volgende vergadering sal, op ‘n datum wat nog vasgestel moet word, by Schyff Beefmasters te Soutpan gehou word. Daar is ‘n string nuwe klein Vrystatertjies oppad en ‘n klompie reeds gebore, baie geluk aan al die nuwe ouers, ons wil ook van die geleentheid gebruik maak om almal ‘n geseënde feesseisoen toe te wens en voorspoed vir die nuwe jaar.

Die meegaande foto laat mens onwillekeurig dink aan die nostalgiese “my hart verlang na die Boland”. Die Beefmaster verse in die foto is die eindom van Jan-Pieter Redelinghuys en Jannas du Plessis van Wolseley in die Wes-Kaap. Die eerste Beefmaster stoet om gevestig te word in die Wes-Kaap.

Hy is al ‘n geruime tyd ontevrede met die prestasie van die Taurus-tipe beeste waarmee daar geboer word in die omgewing. Die rede is dat die beeste hoë voedings-vereistes het asook dat daar ‘n probleem is met die benutting van die bergweiding en probleme met

TKP’s en kalwings. Die Beefmaster as ras het vir hom al hoe meer gelyk na die tipe vleisbees wat aan sy verwagtinge en vereistes sal voldoen.

Na aanleiding van die Farmer’s Weekly promosie artikel “Quardsen sets the standard” deur Dr Vincent Turner, het hy finaal besluit dat dit die ras is wat aan sy behoeftes sal voldoen. Hy vat die lang pad Vrystaat toe en woon Quardsen Beefmaster se jaarlikse produksieveiling van Kobus en Riana Gildenhuys by. Op die veiling bekom hy 7-9 maande swaar dragtige verse.

Vervoer reëlings word getref, die verse gelaai en in die pad geval na Wolseley omtrent 15 minute se ry vanaf Ceres, ‘n afstand van ongeveer 1200km met ‘n verwagte reistyd van 24 uur. Dit was met groot kommernis van Kobus en Riana, dat die verse wat naaste aan kalf bleik te wees in ‘n aparte kompartement gelaai word indien hul oppad sou kalf.

Soos die noodlot dit wil hê laat die vragmotor hom in die steek in die middel van ‘n koue winters Karoo, gelukkig kon ‘n barmhartige samaritaan uithelp wat na die verse omsien terwyl daar gewag word op die herstel van die vragmotor. Jan-Pieter was omtrent in trane toe hy Jannas bel met die nuus. Een ding lei tot die ander en uiteindelik kom die verse op die plaas Verrekyker aan die voet van die berge buite Wolseley aan, ‘n hele week nadat hulle gelaai is in die Vrystaat. Gelukkig het geeneen gekalf nie, maar was uitgestress en honger, ‘n traumatiese ervaring vir enige dier.

Soos dit enige bekwame boer betaam, spring Jan-Pieter in by die ontvangs van die verse en voorsien voldoende voeding, water en aandag en die verse pas pragtig aan. Dis die eerste keer sedert 1722, toe die plaas tot stand

eerste Beefmaster stoeterye in die Wes-Kaap geregistreer moet word met die naam 1722 BEEFMASTER. Die naam verwys na die plaas Verrekyker waar die Redelinghuys familie suksesvol sedert 1722 boer en die nuwe tuise van Beefmaster in die Wes-Kaap is. Hy voorsien dat ‘n groot toekoms vir die Beefmaster as ras voorlê in die Wes-Kaap. Dit getuig ook dat voornemende telers nie jare lank hoef te teel om hul mikpunt te bereik nie, maar deur Quardsen genetika te bekom kan jy BEGIN MET WAT JY WIL BEREIK.

Kobus en Riana kan opreg trots wees op die baanbreker werk wat Quardsen en 1722 Beefmaster vir die Beefmaster ras doen in die Wes-Kaap.

A contemporary group is a group of animals born in the same year and season (thus of similar age), at the same location (same herd or farm), of the same sex, and managed alike from birth to the time of measurement (same feeding regime, date of measurement, etc.). All performance indexes (with the exception of Phase C1 and C2 tests) are calculated within a contemporary group. In Phase C1 and C2 tests the ADG and FCR indices are calculated on a cumulative rolling average of all bulls of that breed which have been tested over the past 10 years at that particular Phase C center.

Select for average (±7.4%) Birth Weight Ratio. High (above 8.5%) Birth Weight Ratios are associated with difficult calvings.

The number of contemporaries gives an indication of the reliability of the index calculations: The more the contemporaries, the more reliable the indexes. The less, the less reliable.Please note: Correctly defined contemporary groups (in BeefPro called Performance Test Groups) are essential for proper performance testing and breeding value estimations. Contemporary groups should be defined in such a way that all (or at least all significant) environmental effects – except for those that are corrected for in the evaluation model, e.g. calf age and dam age – are the same for all animals within a particular group. This, combined with good genetic links between groups, will ensure that BLUP can effectively separate genetic and environmental effects within any particular group.

E.g. a cow of 500kg weaning a calf of 250kg will be more efficient than a cow of 600kg weaning a calf of the same weight.

750 ml Shiraz1.5 kilograms stewing beef1 handful organic flour, for dusting30 ml butter 45 ml olive oil4 garlic cloves, crushed8 bacon rashers, diced4 celery sticks, chopped10 peeled onions7 carrots, peeled and diced410 cans tomatoes, chopped and peeled1 cup beef stock3 thyme sprigs1 rosemary sprig2 bay leaves 250 grams baby mushrooms • Pour wine into a bowl, add stewing beef, cover and marinate

overnight. • Drain and set liquid aside.• Pat meat dry and dust in flour. • Heat butter and oil in a large saucepan.• Fry meat in batches until browned and set aside.• Sauté garlic, bacon, celery, onions and carrots for 3-4

minutes. • Set aside.• Pour wine, tomatoes and stock into a saucepan and bring to

Klits eierwitte styf en voeg suiker lepel vir lepel by. Dit moet ’n stywe meringue vorm. Skep of spuit die meringue bo-op die sagovulsel. Bak in warm oond vir 20 minute.

AUCTION Nigel – Beefmaster Alliance’s annual production auction was held on the 2nd of August 2012 at Nigel. All 112 bulls on offer were sold for an average of R30 268 together with all 34 open heifers on offer were sold for an average of R9 897 each. The most expensive bulls sold were Lot 39 and Lot 42 which were each sold for R60 000 to Dr Andy Hentzen from Heidelberg and Mr Jan van Heerden from Heidelberg respectively. Mr Nicol de Vos from Kriel bought the most number of bulls, totalling 14. The auction was hosted by Beefmaster Alliance with Johan van der Nest as the auctioneer.

The highest priced bull of the day sold for R 110 000.00 to McNaughton & Ellis Properties of Molteno.

OOS-VRYSTAAT VELDBULKLUBDie Oos-Vrystaat Veldbulklub het vanjaar sy 25 ste veiling gehou.

Kopers het uit Natal , Vrystaat , Mpumalanga en Gauteng kom bulle koop.

Beefmaster bulle het die hoogste omset van al die rasse op die veiling gehad .

Die gemiddeld van die Beefmaster bulle was R28 000.

‘n Bul van Sarwipi Beefmaster het die hoogste prys van R48 000 behaal

Met tweede hoogste Human Beefmaster met R47 000 .

Arto Kohler het ‘n trofee ontvang vir teler wat die hoogste persentasie bulle die toets geslaag het.

ELMIC BEEFMASTERS Die veiling van Elmic Beefmasters het plaasgevind op 7 Augustus 2012, die koudste dag van die jaar. Tog kon die sneeu, wind en ysreën nie daarin slaag om die geesdrif te demp nie en die belangstelling was goed. Die bulle is verkoop teen ‘n gemiddelde prys van R30 000 en die vroulike diere teen R11 000. Die duurste bul is verkoop aan Piet Human.

HUMAN BEEFMASTERS Human Beefmaster se jaarlikse produksieveiling die laaste week van Julie is veral gewild vir die 200 drie jaar oud selfgeteelde dragtige verse wat aangebied word.

Kopers het al die verse gekoop met die laaste lotte selfde prys as die eerste en gemiddeld R9500. Christo Boerdery van Koppies het R10500 vir ‘n lot van 8 verse betaal.

Stoet koeie is verkoop vir R9500 gemiddeld en Andreas Gutter van Brandfort het met R10500 die hoogste prys betaal, hy was ook die koper wat die meeste vroulike diere gekoop het met Schyff Beefmaster ‘n kortkop na hom. Uit die koeie gaan hul bulle kry wat nageslag van Oden en Farmer is.

Human Beefmaster is bekend vir sy welslae met bulle by die Veldbulklub in Vrede asook vir die bulle wat op hul

produksieveiling aangebied word en dieselfde veldtoets op die plaas gedoen het. Vanjaar is die bulle vir die veiling sonder enige mielie produkte vir die veiling reggemaak, hulle het in staande hooi met produksielek geloop.

Veldbulle sonder vetmesting op ‘n veiling van die teler aan die koper ‘n eerste in SA. Bulle het goed verkoop met gemiddeld R25000 en die hoogste prys is betaal vir Atlas kleinseun van Atlas veldbul 2002. Die kopers was Jannie Schabort en Elmic Beefmaster. CMW Elite het die veiling gehou met Ian Grobbelaar afslaer en Dolf Krogman die bemarker.

Die Humans bedank almal wat die veiling bygewoon en gehelp het en ons Hemelse Vader.

IVUKILE BEEFMASTERS Die 7e Ivukile Beefmaster Veiling het plaasgevind op die plaas Strydfontein, Aliwal Noord op 4 September 2012. Dit was weereens ‘n groot sukses waarvoor ons baie dankbaar is.

Die bulle was van hoogstaande gehalte, en natuurlik sou ons dit nie kon doen indien daar nie soveel van ons gewaardeerde kliente teruggekom het nie. Ons spreek ons opregte waardering uit aan almal wat bulle gekoop het. Dit was verblydend om te sien hoeveel nuwe kopers geregistreer het, en hoeveel nuwe kliente ons bygekry het !

Die twee hoogste pryse is behaal deur die stoetbulle FCK 09-058 vir R52 000, en FCK09-008 vir R50 000. Hierdie twee top bulle is onderskeidelik gekoop deur die Swanepoels van La Belle France Trust, Zastron en Mnr J H H Bekker & Seun Trust, Vanstadensrus.

Daar is 18 3-jaar oud bulle verkoop teen ‘n gemiddelde prys van R30 250, en 7 2-jaar oud bulle teen ‘n gemiddeld van R25 000.

JELA BEEFMASTERSJorrie en Lizette Cronje van Jela Beefmasters het hulle eerste produksieveiling op 18 September 2012 gehou.

Daar is 20 bulle en 120 vroulike diere aangebied.

Meneer Naas Brits het R27 000 vir die duurste bul betaal en meneer Rudo Janse van Rensburg van Lichtenburg het die duurste koei en kalf gekoop vir R12 000. Die duurste dragtige vers is deur meneer Hannes Jooste gekoop vir R11 000.

Baie geluk en baie dankie aan almal wat diere gekoop het.

SALES REPORT FOR EAST COAST BEEFMASTER HELD ON 13 SEPTEMBER 2012The East Coast Beefmaster Sale made up of Hart, Impact and Amberdene Beefmasters, offered 48 beefmaster bulls of

exceptional quality. All the bulls were sold at an average of R36 400.

The top price of R72 000 was paid by Dave Armitage, Natal for Amberdene’s PD 10-082.

Ottershaw farms bought GH 10-234 for R54 000 and Creative Beefmasters paid R45 000 for PB 10-043.

UITSTEKENDE PRYSE VIR SANDSPRUIT EN AMAKOSI SE BEEFMASTERSCharles en Gert Campher het op Dinsdag 21 Augustus hul jaarlikse produksieveiling op die plaas Oakdale in die Ladysmith distrik aangebied. Die aanbod het bestaan uit 52 top Beefmaster bulle en 100 verse. Die veiling het baie belangstelling gelok met ’n groot aantal kopers wat vir die veiling geregistreer het.

Die duurste bul het aan Charles Campher behoort en is vir R 56 000 aan Eise du Plessis van Swartberg verkoop. Die naasduurste bul is aan Tim Crooks van Scottburgh vir R 52 500 verkoop met Gert Campher as eienaar. ’n Verkoopsyfer van 100% is op die bulle behaal teen ’n uitstekende gemiddeld van R 34 587. Die duurste groep dragtige verse is vir R 11 000 elk aan Tim Crooks verkoop terwyl ’n gemiddeld van R 10 518 elk op die dragtige verse behaal is. Die duurste groep oop verse is vir R 7 250 elk aan Tommie Bouwer van Vryheid verkoop. Die gemiddeld op die oop verse was R 6 563 elk.

Na afloop van die veiling het die Camphers ’n heerlike ete aangebied om hul dank teenoor die kopers, vriende en betrokkenes te toon. Die veiling is aangebied deur BKBLouwid KZN met Jan Mostert as afslaer.

7th TRIGON PRODUCTION SALEThe Trigon Beefmaster Group held their 7th production sale on 12 September 2012 on the farm of Willem and Sarie Pieterse near Greylingstad. A positive mood prevailed as the central and eastern parts of our country were blessed with good soaking rains a week before the sale, after a very dry preceding late summer, autumn and winter.

Sarwipi Beefmasters sold 20 registered 3 year old bulls at an average of R38 225 per bull, including the highest priced bull bought by Mr. Philip van der Walt for R60 000. Snowy River Beefmasters traded 12 bulls averaging R29 500 (highest R42 000) and a 2.5 year old bull of Dunel Beefmasters reached R27 500. The median price of all the registered bulls is R34 712. Two 2.5 year old commercial bulls went for R20 000 each.

Ten registered and commercial cows with calves averaged R9 800 (three sold for R11 000). Thirty nine registered and commercial cows in calf sold for R10 090 (highest R12 000), 5 commercial pregnant heifers went for R9 230 and 19 and 17 open / possibly early pregnant registered and commercial heifers respectively averaged R9 940 and R8 509 per heifer with R12 000 for three each as the highest bid.

VEILINGSVERSLAG VAN DIE PETANA – OKTAVIA PRODUKSIEVEILINGOns vyfde produksieveiling is vanjaar weer gehou op Wolmaransstad op 14 Augustus in die Skousaal. Andrè Kock en seun was ons bekwame mark agente wat die veiling behartig het en in besonder Johannes de Beer wat ‘n reuse aandeel in die bemarking daarvan gehad het. Die afslaer was Johan v d Nest.

Daar was 31 bulle, en 37 verse (dragtig en oop), wat te koop aangebied is. Ons het die volgende resultate behaal:
