2011 annual report

- Andre Gide

ART begins with resistance - at the point where resistance is overcome.

No human masterpiece has ever been created without great labor.

There is an art and a science to all we do at the Bert nash Center. Reflecting on 2011 allows us the opportunity to truly appreciate all the individual work it takes to realize the masterpiece that is our mission:

“…... to advance the mental health of the Douglas County community through comprehensive behavioral health services responsive to evolving needs and changing environments.”

It’s perhaps an understatement to say that it takes great creativity to stay true to our mission during the present economic and political times. But with strong partnerships, exceptional staff and loyal community support we’re doing just that – and more.

This year, we’re highlighting some art from our past as we look forward to a vibrant future. From 1984-2002, the Center recognized mental health month in May with our “The Art of Mental Health” project. Each year, the work of a local artist was featured on commemorative posters and note cards. With the support of community partners, the sale of the posters and note cards raised much-needed funds for the Center’s endowment.

Please accept this calendar featuring some of the work created in support of the Bert Nash Center as a token of our gratitude for your generous support through donations, advocacy or participation in our events. Many individual brushstrokes work together to create a captivating and remarkable painting. Thank you.

Our Masterpiece of 2011

A Picture of 2011We placed a new focus on and expanded the list of available

group therapy programs. Mental Health First Aid continues to spread in the community.

We certified 183 individuals, bringing the total to more than 500 people who have taken this groundbreaking training since 2008.

Our annual Pioneer Celebration in April provided the opportunity to honor the Menninger, Nash and Shaw-Witt families as pioneers of mental health treatment in Douglas County.

As members of the Kansas All Hazards Behavioral Health program we continued to respond in times of crises and partnered with emergency management staff throughout the area.

We continued our partnership with Heartland Community Health Center to integrate the delivery of primary care and mental health services.

The annual Nancy Shontz Educational Series brought world-renowned meditation speaker Sharon Salzberg to Lawrence for two days of exceptional training for our staff.

Our Supported Employment Education Development program recognized the accomplishments of students, employees and employers and presented awards to Employer of the Year, Allied Staffing; Employee of the Year, Steven Smelser, The Button Man; and Student of the Year, Kenny Owens.

Our diversity committee provided two staff trainings, focusing on the topics of Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgendered individuals and immigration.

The Center started the process of improving access to our services by researching and implementing procedures for walk-in assessments to start in 2012.
