WE vALUE & WELCOME OUR MEMBERS

MEET your MANAGERS

At the Village, we value and welcome our members’ feedback on how we can improve the club every day. As we continue to evolve as a club, it is important for us to gather research and listen to our members’ input on new opportunities in the fitness industry and club operations.

There are several avenues that a member can take to communicate with us. We have always maintained an open door policy. If for some reason you cannot get in front of a staff person, we have comment boxes at the front desk for your suggestions. In February, we introduced the Medallia online survey. The Medallia survey is used by many of the top companies and resorts across the country. This survey is emailed to each member four times a year and enables us to address immediate questions, directly and confidentially with you. The survey also allows us to understand ways we can improve the member experience and stay current with the latest health club industry trends. Having your updated email address in our system is an integral part of this process. Please provide any email changes to our membership department or the front desk staff.

The Village clubs are designed and managed to be clubs, not gyms. They are a place for members to interact and have fun exercising together. We want the clubs to be part of your daily routine and feel like your second home. The highest compliment we can receive, is when you feel comfortable enough to ask your friends, family, and co-workers to join you at the Village.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to fill out the survey, and providing constructive feedback so that “Life is Better at the Village.”

COMPeTe Triathlon Season in Full Swing

Village Members and employees competed in numerous local and out-of-state races this spring including the Marquee/Leadman in Tempe, Ragnar Trail relay, Ironman 70.3 St. George in Utah, St. Croix 70.3, Rocky Point Triathlon, Esprit de She in Tempe, Tempe International Triathlon and many more.

Summertime pushes our athletes to travel out of town for cooler weather races such as Ironman Coeur d’Alene in Idaho, Ironman 70.3 Vineman and Barb’s Race in northern California, Mountain Man in Flagstaff, Deuces Wild in Show Low, and Lake Stevens in Washington, among others.

This fall, Village triathletes will conquer Ironman Arizona, SOMA Triathlon, Tour de Scottsdale Cycle Event, and the CFF Ride for Life hosted by DC Ranch Village on November 9.

Village triathletes are members of a handful of local triathlon clubs including two supported by Village clubs—ONE Multisport and TriScottsdale. DC Ranch Village hosts ONE Multisport training days, group rides, and monthly meetings and TriScottsdale is centered around Gainey Village with group rides, track workouts, and social events. For more information on these two groups go to www.onemultisport.org and www.triscottsdale.org. Ladies, check out the all-women cycling group (they also run and swim) NWLB which meets on Sunday mornings for a group ride. These 3 groups have a big impact on the sport of triathlon and throughout the community with their charity work, volunteerism at races, and support of all levels of triathletes.

vILLAGE CUP TOURNAMENTdc ranch vs. camelback

And the winner is...

Camelback by a nose! The first annual Village Cup Tennis Tournament was held at DC Ranch Village Tennis Center on May 17. Camelback won 15 matches to DC Ranch’s 14. Congratulations to everyone and thanks to all who represented us so well! Next year’s event will be at Camelback Village. Take a look at the “cup” displayed in the Camelback Village V Lounge. The “cup” was donated by Brian Cheney who won the Phoenix District Championships 3 years in a row many years ago, so it was retired to him. Bruce Nichols also won the Championships during that time frame, so his name is also engraved on the cup!

Skip Gagnon CSCS, CISSN,

Fitness Director, DC ranch Village.

Skip can be reached at [email protected].

The information age is great, isn’t it? You can Google anything and get instant information. I searched for “fat loss workouts” on Google and got 40,400,000 results. That’s a lot of information. Too much information. Focus on the following recommendations:

WhATARE YOU TRAINING FOR?find a program that will get you results

Create your goal The first step to achieving any result is defining the goal you’re trying to reach. This sounds much easier than it actually is. I suggest using a modified SMART goals model—the acronym SMART refers to Specific, Measurable, Attractive (usually attainable, but I’ll explain this one in a moment), Realistic and Timely.

Specific: Goals must be specific. There’s a big difference between “losing weight” and “reducing body fat composition by 5%.”

Measurable: You must always have a consistent way to measure your goal. If you use 2 different scales to track your weight, you will probably get inconsistent readings.

Attractive: Most people who use SMART goals think of the A as “attainable.” I use “attractive” and define attractive as “the thing that compels YOU to reach this goal.” Working toward a goal because someone else suggested it usually won’t work. Think about the real reason you want to succeed. How will it change your life? What will happen if you don’t attain your goal? Make it your own and make it attractive.

Realistic: Perhaps your goal is to complete a marathon. Do you have the time to commit or should you start with something smaller? What are the potential roadblocks that might get in the way? These are just some of the great questions to ask yourself in order to determine whether your goals are realistic.

Timely: Always put a specific timeline to your goal. Establishing regular checkpoints is the best way to ensure that you’ll stay on track.

Select your training plan Now comes the more difficult part—selecting your training plan. For this, as well as designing your program, it helps to enlist the help of a fitness professional. The first step is to make sure your

personalized plan is in line with your specific goals. The training principal called S.A.I.D (Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands) says that the human body adapts to the specific demands that you place on it. The demands of the training program must align with the goals you’ve set. If you’re trying to increase lean body mass, a 60-minute treadmill workout may not be the best choice because the adaptation (increasing endurance and energy system efficiency) caused by the specific demands (longer duration cardiovascular exercise) may actually decrease lean body mass.

Part of every successful plan will also incorporate the principal of progressive overload. As the S.A.I.D principle implies, the body adapts to a demand or stimulus. Once the body has adapted to the imposed demand, it is essential to increase the overload of the stimulus in order to continue adaptation. This can be accomplished by increasing the load (intensity) or the volume (distance, number of repetitions). I often see people just going through the motions doing the same weight, number of repetitions, distance or speed time and time again. This is a great way to maintain, but not a great way to move forward.

Setting your goals and selecting the correct plan are essential steps in the journey to reaching your health and fitness goals. With all of the information out there, selecting the correct plan and specific exercises can be a daunting task. All of the trainers at your Village club have earned at least a 4-year degree in an exercise-related field as well as a nationally recognized personal training certification—and they are here to help you. If you are interested in updating your program and reaching your goals faster without being overwhelmed, please contact one of our trainers.

The 4th annual Cycle for the Cure—a heart-pumping, 2-hour cycling fundraiser—sold out bike slots at all four locations for a record-breaking year!

4Th ANNUAL

CYCLEFOR ThECURE raises reCord amount for CanCer researCh at tGen

Spurred by dynamic music and motivational instructors, more than 200 indoor cyclists at all of the Village club locations and Studio 360 helped raise more than $152,500 for cancer research at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen).

According to Robyn DeBell and Vicki Vaughn, Village members and event co-chairs, this year’s Cycle for the Cure exceeded our expectations by over 20 percent. The fun and enthusiasm with the event was contagious. Now more and more people are aware of how TGen benefits cancer patients. “We most sincerely thank the club management, the instructors and committee members donating their time to this event which further allows the scientific breakthroughs being made at TGen,” say Robyn and Vicki.

Donations poured in from across the nation and around the world. There was team riding, virtual riding, and volunteering to help support the important work at TGen. The success of this year’s event was celebrated at the Post-Ride Party at the Camelback Village Racquet & Health Club with the Nate Nathan Band, food, drinks, and even dancing.

TGen focuses on developing and delivering precision medicine. Using genomic sequencing, TGen helps doctors match the appropriate therapy to each patient’s DNA profile, producing the greatest patient benefit. All of the funds generated by Cycle for the Cure support cancer research at TGen, and most of the patients who benefit from TGen’s research are Arizonans.

At one time it was thought that the brain progressively deteriorates with age. Thank goodness research has proven that it doesn’t have to be that way.

a study called “aerobic exercise Training increases Brain Volume in Humans”* has provided evidence to the contrary.

59 healthy but sedentary participants, age 60 – 79, participated in this study. Half were in the aerobic exercise group and the other half in the stretching and toning group.

Mris were used to measure the brain volumes of all participants before and after the 6-month study. The aerobic exercise group had significant increases in brain volume while the stretch and tone group did not. The study also showed that with increased brain volume comes an enhanced ability to learn, to adapt, to have increased memory function and a marked improvement in decision-making capability. The study showed conclusively that cardio or aerobic exercise helps to counteract disease and aging-related mental decline.

How does aerobic exercise accomplish this brain turnaround? When you exercise aerobically, your heart pumps more blood carrying oxygen to your brain along with a wide array of hormones that nourish and grow brain cells. regular exercisers are more likely to stave off diseases like diabetes and hypertension which can cause brain dysfunction and degeneration.

How much aerobic/cardio exercise do you need?

The people in the study exercised aerobically for 3 hours per week. if you are not able to do that much cardio in the beginning, don’t be deterred. Take a short, brisk walk 2 times a day. Gradually work up to 30 minutes, 2 times per day. Walk briskly, swim, dance, play tennis, hike…the list is endless. you just have to get your heart rate up and coordinate your body’s movement. it won’t take long for you to get the hang of regular exercise and to feel its benefits for your body and brain. you will be sharper in every way.

Brain-body benefits from regular aerobic exercise:• aerobic exercise can actually grow more brain cells

thereby reversing your brain’s decline.

• aerobic exercise can help you deal with stress and alleviate depression, which can save your brain from dysfunction and deterioration.

• Choose an aerobic exercise that includes coordination along with a cardio workout for an even bigger brain enhancing payback. For example, ballroom dancing asks you to think and move at the same time.

• regular aerobic exercise will help you fight off diseases that degrade your brain’s ability to function well.

The need existed for a product that could be used between treatment sessions that would increase the efficacy of manual therapy and produce longer-lasting results. In 1979, Japanese-born Kenzo Kase invented Kinesio tape (KT) and the Kinesio taping method. This taping method can be best described as lifting the layer of skin and attached tissue covering the muscle below allowing blood and other body fluids to move more freely in and around the muscle.

For about 10 years following its invention, KT was used alongside other therapies by orthopedists, physical therapists, and chiropractors. It was when Japanese Olympic athletes discovered the benefits of KT that these colorful strips started a worldwide buzz. Athletes had discovered a product that might allow them to heal quicker from an injury, and possibly provide an edge over the competition.

The Technology Behind KT First, let’s examine traditional solid white athletic tape. This tape is primarily used to protect and support joints, prevent injury, and restrict range of motion. A traditional method of taping would require wrapping

a joint or muscle up like a mummy, impeding circulation and slowing down the natural healing processes of the body. Solid athletic tape is stiff, loosens quickly, is not comfortable to wear for long periods of time, and it’s removed following a game or event.

KT takes the opposite approach by opening up the muscle and allowing full range of motion. It’s made of 100% porous cotton sheaths which allow the tape to lengthen but not widen. It stretches to 140%–190% of its original length, allowing the recoil to create the therapeutic effect by its pull. It is latex-free and designed to mimic the elastic properties of the epidermis. It’s also designed with a wavelike pattern which allows it to breathe. KT can be worn for all daily activities, including exercise and showering, and can last for up to 5 days before needing to be reapplied.

For years, physical therapists and other health care practitioners have seen the results manual therapy can produce for patients with a variety of aliments, however, the results are often temporary.

ThE GENESIS OF KINESIO TAPE

Page 19: BetterLIFE Summer 2014

what is kt and is it for me?

The Theory Behind Kinesio Tape This is where things get interesting. Science and research studies are still trying to catch up to the recent KT phenomenon. The amount and quality of research is currently underwhelming, however, several studies exist on its effectiveness for various medical conditions. Here are a few theories:

The cutaneous fusimotor reflex theory Proposes that the stretch of the tape on the skin activates the underlying muscles to contract via gamma motor reflexes. Using the tape increases the intensity and frequency of the stimuli, which results in an increased muscle contraction.

Creation of channels for lymphatic flow KT lifts the skin away from the underlying muscle, creating channels for the passage of lymph. This would be beneficial for the removal of swelling from an area of trauma.

Enhanced proprioception Proprioception is the ability of the body and the brain to figure where is it is in space. This is the primary reason why an X Game athlete can do a 720 in the air and have the awareness to stick a landing. The tape may allow for increased proprioception of the skin and underlying soft tissues thus reducing the chance of reinjury and also increasing sports performance.

Reasons to Use Kinesio Tape

Rehabilitation KT can be used before a manipulation in a physical therapy or chiropractic session by opening up the fascial tissue to make a manual manipulation easier to attain. It can also be used following a manipulation to provide increased stabilization to the effected area, thus giving the muscles and ligaments a better chance of healing by taking pressure off the areas that have been manipulated.

Pain Management KT tape can be used to decrease pain in areas of the body that can be bothersome. For example, there is a technique to decrease pain in a triathlete who suffers from chronic IT band syndrome (usually manifesting as pain on the outside of the knee). A Kinesio taping method could alleviate swelling to the area by helping to drain the edema via the lymphatic system.

Alignment One of the most common issues found by a physical therapist is forward head posture. This slouching posture is often created by poor daily habits and environments. KT can help bring your body back into alignment, reinforcing proper posture while at work or home.

Sports Many athletes have KT applied before competition to prevent reinjury. For example, if an athlete has chronic plantar flexion ankle sprains, the tape may be applied in a manner which will stabilize the joint and increase the firing potential of muscles that will oppose plantar flexion.

The Real important Stuff Does Kinesio tape come in colors that will match my new LuLu outfit? Unlike that scary old white athletic tape that clashes with everything, KT tape comes in a wide variety of designs and colors that will be sure to match anything in your wardrobe. In fact, KT is currently considered a fashion accessory and is often a great icebreaker when meeting new people. It sells for roughly $20 a roll. There are many different brands of Kinesio tape that include RockTape, KT Tape, SpiderTech tape, and the original Kinesio brand. I’ve tried them all and I use and endorse RockTape in my clinic because it seems to stay on the skin longer. Just remember, application and technique are more important than which brand you use.

If you would like to try KT it’s important to go to a licensed health care provider who has been trained to tape through a professional organization. It may look simple on YouTube, but a proper medical evaluation is always imperative before you just slap some tape on yourself. Furthermore, there are many different taping techniques that require advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology. Your body is priceless, so take care of it and go to a professional.

Michael’s practice, The Body Shop Physical Therapy, is located on the lower level of DC ranch Village. He is a certified FMT (Fascial Movement Taping) rockTape Doc with advanced training in applying Kinesio tape. Michael has used KT for years with his patients and would like to share one of the latest innovations in the sports medicine community with you. Contact him for a consultation or appointment at 480.620.3720.

After 22 years bearing the sweat and tears of Village members of all ages, the original 1992 basketball court has been completely replaced—a process that took 33 days but puts the Camelback Village facility in great shape for the next 20 to 30 years.

Greg Heisser, Camelback Village assistant Programs Director, oversaw the entire process as the court was cut out down to the foundation in 2' x 5' sections and removed over a span of two days. a concrete sealer and water vapor barrier were added to the foundation before the new FiBa-certified subfloor system was installed.

a local Phoenix company, arizona Hardwoods, installed 2 1/4" maple boards across the subflooring system over the next few days. a caramel stain was applied to the areas inside the three-point line and outside the key on all four quadrants of the court before a coat of sealer was brushed over the entire floor.

next, court lines (including a special half-court and free throw line for junior basketball players) and logos were added, in fresh citrus colors to coordinate with the palette used throughout the club. The final step was to add two coats of epoxy to preserve the quality of the wood. This weeklong process will happen periodically in future years to maintain a safe playing surface.

On May 6, 2014, the beautiful new court opened for business—which at the Village means activities of all kinds, including basketball. The Spring league championship game on May 15 was the first official game on the new court with Captain Tucker Blalock’s team coming out victorious, 101 – 90.

Basketball at Camelback Villageadults (18 and up) can participate in 4-on-4 pickup basketball throughout the summer on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 6:00pm or Saturday and Sunday mornings from 7:00 to 9:00am. adult Fall leagues, both 20 & up and 40 & up, begin in September. Teams are drafted.

Junior activities include clinics during the summer and 5-on-5 leagues, which also begin in September. Teams for ages 7 – 11 are drafted. registration for the Fall Junior Basketball leagues begins in august with the season starting in September (registration forms will be available at the front desk).

BLUEStime for parents, and kids, to prepare for the upcoming school year

Summer brought the joy of teaching your child how to dive into the pool, the pleasure of devouring ice cream cones together on the porch, the peacefulness of taking post-bedtime walks through theneighborhood. Sadly, those relaxing moments seem to grow scarce once the school bus reappears. However, with these simple tips, the transition is sure to be smooth and effortless!

Ease back into scheduled days. Starting two weeks prior to the first day of school, start your child’s bedtime routine 10 minutes earlier than normal, and start their wake-up routine 10 minutes earlier, too. Aim to serve meals at the same time they would eat during the school year.

Keep passions in play. During the summertime your child may become interested in a hobby or sport. Keep this integrated throughout the school year through an after-school program or group that will allow them to continue their newfound interest.

Set up a homework area. Create a quiet, peaceful space without electronic distractions for your child to do their school work. Make sure this space has all of the necessities, and to make it a fun process, have your child go with you to pick out supplies.

Stay connected to nature. Just because the summer months turn into the school year there’s no reason your child should say farewell to outdoor fun. Set aside an hour of outdoor time each afternoon, whether it’s a bike ride, a walk, or a sport. This is essential in order to maintain their sanity— and yours.

Go for a test run. Take a trip to school and check out the classroom, the playground, the bathrooms, the cafeteria, etc. Get your child familiarized with the new surroundings and the new schooltime routine.

We are aware that transitions can be challenging at times, but they don’t have to be painful. Make them creative and fun, discover a routine, and above all BE PATIENT.

Most people have probably seen an old Western or two wherein there is always the obligatory traveling salesman hawking dubious bottles of noxious-looking fluid from the back of his horse cart. And there is always a shill in the audience who stumbles up, buys a bottle, drinks it, throws his hat in the air with a huge whoop and cries out that he is cured.

what’s cookin’ GOOd LOOKIN’

Today, the efficacy of vitamins and diet supplementation is the hot controversy. Yet, a quick web search will show that over 55% of the U.S. population uses them. The FDA claims that most supplements, including multivitamins, are dangerous, unnecessary, and should be regulated. Supplement manufacturers (and many consumers) claim the FDA secretly knows that many supplements are not snake oil and are actually conspiring with pharmaceutical companies to take economic control of the industry.

The FDA has taken several steps to ensure the public’s safety in this arena: in 1994, the FDA put restrictions on false claims and the labeling of all supplements sold in the U.S., and in 2007 they implemented a “good manufacturing practices” (GMP) policy to ensure

dietary supplements “are produced in a quality manner, do not contain contaminants or impurities, and are accurately labeled.” While the controversy over safety and efficacy will continue, the future of supplementation regulation is hard to predict. Common sense suggests that sticking with products from large, long-standing and reputable companies is the smart way for consumers to protect themselves and continue to enjoy their supplement boosts.

The following is a list of supplements we stock and use as “smoothie boosts” at the Gainey Village Atrium Café. They are manufactured at NSF-certified GMP facilities and are third-party tested for safety. They are also all naturally occurring substances.

Creatine Occurs naturally in the human body and is manufactured by our amino acids. The best food sources for natural creatine are meats. Creatine supplies energy to cells (primarily muscle cells) and it is theorized that supplementing with creatine can hydrate muscles and assist in developing muscle mass. This is arguably the most-studied (and safest) supplement in sports medicine.

Glutamine Also naturally occurring, very well-studied and generally considered safe, glutamine is a non-essential amino acid which is found in meats, fish, and dairy. Supplementing with glutamine may promote healing. Glutamine also serves as a nitrogen donator for anabolic processes such as building muscle. It aids in protein synthesis which helps in building muscle tissue as well.

Multivitamin Boost A vitamin powder which meets minimum U.S. RDA requirements.

Protein Basically, protein is just large molecular chains of amino acids. Protein has many varied functions in the body. The two functions most interesting to weight lifters are its ability to transport molecules throughout the organism and its ability to bind and adhere. As a result, protein provides essential structural and mechanical function in muscle tissue. We stock several types of protein: vegetable protein (derived mainly from peas, rice and artichoke), egg protein (from egg whites), and your basic protein powder which is a blend of whey protein and egg-white powder.

Fiber/Probiotic Supplement Fiber does two basic things—it shortens transit time through the intestinal tract and encourages the production of healthy compounds which are a byproduct of fermentation inside the digestive system. The brand of fiber that we stock also contains probiotics. Probiotics are microorganisms that are theorized to help healthfully balance intestinal bacteria.

JUICING vS. BLENdINGYou are most likely hearing a lot about “juicing” and “smoothies” lately. With all of the information in the media, from friends/family, and from health professionals you might be left with confusion about the subject. People often ask me which is better—to make fruit and vegetable juices with a juicer or to blend them in a blender. The answer is often, it depends! What are your goals? Let’s break down the difference between the two—hopefully it will help you decide which is the best choice for you.

Juicing is the process of running fresh produce through a juicer which delivers the nutrients, water, and natural sugar from fruits and vegetables while removing the insoluble fiber (the fiber your body cannot digest). This allows you to consume many nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables in a very small quantity of food—in other words, more bang for your nutritional buck. If your goal is to deliver as many nutrients to your body as possible without having to consume much food, juicing is for you! Cold-pressed juice is the “gold standard” because high heat can destroy some nutrients. Drinking juice delivers nutrients rapidly since your system doesn’t need to deal with breaking down insoluble fiber. For the same reason, juices can cause high blood sugar spikes because these foods consist almost entirely of natural sugar known as fructose.

Blending, or making “smoothies,” actually uses the entire fruit or vegetable. So, unlike a glass of juice, a smoothie contains all of the insoluble fiber. The benefit of consuming

the fiber, beyond health benefits such as decreased blood pressure, is that nutrients and sugar are released into your system over an extended period of time (much like an extended release tablet) which can prevent blood sugar spikes! The fiber also makes the smoothie more filling and will keep you satisfied much longer than drinking juice.

One of the nice benefits of making a smoothie is the ability to add. I love to add protein via organic dairy or a protein powder which helps keep blood sugars level in addition to increasing protein intake! You can also add chia or flax seed for increased fiber and omega 3s!

The Verdict: I personally think both are great ways to increase nutrients and aid one’s overall health. I am a huge advocate of keeping blood sugar levels under control, so for this reason I often recommend blending over juicing. But when done properly, both can have a beneficial place in everyone’s life and most people really feel a difference when they add a vegetable-based juice or blended juice to their diet!

SUMMER SUN PROTECTIONSkin cancer is chiefly a lifestyle disease, so the good news is that it’s highly preventable.

Unfortunately, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer at some point. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, about 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers and 65 percent of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Everyone, regardless of skin color, should make staying safe in Arizona’s sun a priority.

Please, incorporate sun protection measures into your daily life.

• SEEK THE SHADE. The sun is strongest between 10:00am and 4:00pm. If your shadow is shorter than you are, then the harmful UV radiation is stronger.

• DON’T BURN. A person’s risk for melanoma doubles if they have had 5 or more sunburns in a lifetime.

• AVOID TANNING BOOTHS. Just four visits a year can increase the risk of skin cancer by up to 15 percent.

• COVER UP WITH CLOTHING. UV-blocking sunglasses, a hat, and clothes made of densely woven fabric in bright or dark colors offer the best defense.

• KEEP NEWBORNS OUT OF THE SUN. After six months of age, sunscreens are safe to use according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

• ALWAYS USE A BROAD SPECTRUM (UVA/UVB) SUNSCREEN.

The Village Spas carry a wide variety of sunscreen options. Here are just a few:

JAN MARINI (not available at Camelback location)ANTIOXIDANT DAILY FACE PROTECTANT (SPF 33)—Invisible, hydrating, weightless and perfect for wearing under make-up.

PHYSICAL PROTECTANT (SPF 45)—Mineral-based sunscreen that provides a sheer matte finish. Contains green tea extract to calm skin from stress caused by UV rays and heat.

PCAVery Active (SPF 45)—Water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, with an ultra sheer zinc oxide. Other PCA sunscreens include Protecting, Perfecting or Hydrating (each SPF 30), and Weightless (SPF 45).

COOLA Classic Sunscreen—Uses organic active ingredients to absorb and dissipate UVA/UVB rays. Mineral Sunscreen—Uses titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to scatter and reflect UVA/UVB rays—includes Coola Baby.

EMINENCESun Defense Minerals (SPF 30)—For both men and women, this brush-on powder is easy to use (carry and apply anywhere). It’s water-resistant and nonclogging.

She was on the verge of tears and I could see the frustration in her eyes. “Why can’t I just lose eight pounds!?”

Why eight pounds? i asked. I’m going shopping in New York in two weeks, she said.

What else is going on? I’m really stressed out. I have finals coming up at school. I’ll be starting my summer job, the same one from last summer. I begin a summer internship when I return from New York. Then we go to Mexico for a month. I want to look great on the beach.

I know I eat too much on the weekends…it’s because I’m so hungry I can’t stay on the program.

What do you eat during the week? That’s easy because I eat the same thing every day. I have egg whites for breakfast, hummus and pretzels for lunch, pretzels for the snack in the afternoon, and for dinner I eat chicken breast and a small salad or vegetables.

your calories are too low that’s why you’re hungry and can’t stick to the program. I use the MyFitnessPal app for food journaling and it says I should eat 1700 calories. I reduced the number to 1200 calories, but I stay around 900. If I eat more food how can I lose eight pounds?

your calories are too low. your metabolism has slowed to compensate for you starving yourself. What do you think about increasing your calorie intake? Have you thought about fruit or other food choices that might work for you? I hate all fruit.

Have you tried switching out your current foods for other food choices? No, I don’t like anything else.

Can you replace the pretzels with something else you might like? “Didn’t hear what I said?” I don’t like any other food!

Have you tried shakes and smoothies? No, she said and her eyes began to water as she repeated, “eight pounds.”

you’re going to have to find what works for you on your own. i have no other suggestions.

There are five points to address regarding this conversation that might apply to you and your efforts to lose eight pounds:

Low calorie intake. If calorie intake is too low, the body will make compensatory adjustments in resting metabolism to resist weight loss. The body will also conserve energy by increasing the fuel efficiency of its organs and by reducing blood flow to the extremities like fingers and toes to conserve energy and resist weight loss. When I suggested that someone add some fruit or increase their intake of carbohydrates by having oatmeal or toast for breakfast, it’s not unusual for them to lose three pounds in 14 days.

Restrictive food choices. If the food choice library is too small, you will miss out on the metabolic adjustments that occur from eating a variety foods that contain different ratios of protein, fat, water, fiber, and carbohydrate. Fiber is very important—especially fiber from fruits, salads, and vegetables—is vital to a healthy digestive system, and supports regular elimination. Fiber helps to increase the feeling of fullness while on a reduced-calorie diet.

Use a combination of these three pathways:

1. Eat less and move more. Reducing calorie intake and burning

calories through exercise leaves the body looking for fat to burn. It’s like taking a road trip and burning your stored fuel.

2. Your vital organs can use fat for fuel.

If given the correct combination of calories (not too many, not too few), optimal spacing of meals and snacks, and the best menu composition (the right ratios of fat, protein, and carbohydrates), your liver, kidneys, lungs, heart, etc. will begin to utilize stored fat as fuel.

3. increase muscle strength. By performing traditional

resistance exercise you will increase lean body mass.

Pretzels and other processed items as a regular food choice. Most packaged foods are processed and engineered to provide the perfect combination of sugar, salt, fat, and crunch to make them taste wonderful. That’s why they taste so good! The FDA’s “rounding rule” for declaring nutrients allows a standard error adjustment when reporting nutrients on a nutrition panel. The bottom line is I believe you can bet that a packaged product contains more calories than the label claims. The standard margin of error results in an allowable error of up to 20 percent. This 20 percent can mean the difference between weight loss and no weight loss for you.

intense life stress. When you’re stressed, no matter what the cause, your body will respond in a predictable manner—by engaging the fight or flight mechanism. This survival response prepares the body for physical action in response to stress and will increase heart and breathing rates, increase blood pressure, increase blood glucose levels, increase mobilization of free fatty acids, shift blood distribution from the abdominal organs to the skeletal muscles, and increase hearing sensitivity and vision acuity.

Normal blood glucose levels are around 100. In fight or flight situations, the liver (which stores glucose) releases glucose into the bloodstream so that the working muscles have fuel to fight or flee, increasing blood glucose levels to as high as 150. Because you neither fight nor flee, the body must return blood glucose back to 100. In order to do this, fat cells welcome the newly released glucose and store it as more fat. During the next meal, the liver absorbs extra glucose to return stored glucose to normal levels. Now imagine this cyclical process repeated on a regular basis. You can actually increase fat stores while on a calorie-restricted diet. Reducing stress can help reset proper body balance and homeostasis and return blood glucose levels to normal.

High emotional attachment to losing eight pounds. In my experience, you will never get what you desire most while a combination of stress and obsessive, burning desire to possess it are in play. You have to think big picture. Television, the internet, books, magazines, and advertising make it seem like losing weight is so easy that anyone can do it—and it makes you feel like you must be the only one who can’t. The truth is that weight loss is a slow process. When someone asks me if it’s possible to lose ten pounds in twenty days, I say yes, it can be done…if you get E-coli bacterial food poisoning!

If your goal is to lose some weight, take the time to find the program that works best for you. Creating a daily and weekly meal plan is important so that you don’t return to the old standby food choices. The best success I’ve seen is from people who keep a food journal. You will meet many self-proclaimed diet and weight-loss experts. Don’t follow any of them. Use the services of a highly educated professional, certified in the area of diet and nutrition, and experienced in the area of weight-loss counseling. The actual look of your weight-loss program will be as unique as you are.

Q: Hi lisa, i’m a 45-year-old female. i’ve been exercising for years in the gym as well as running almost 5 miles a day, at least 5 days a week. i also ride my bike and hike frequently. i have low body fat and an athletic build and many people mistake me for a teenager from behind but once i turn around they can see that is not the case! i have noticed in recent photos that my face is gaunt and looks skeleton-like. lately i’ve lost a lot of fat in my face. i apply many creams and sunscreens but it’s not improving. i love to run and work out and am not willing to discontinue my strict exercise regimen just to save my face! i have always been considered good-looking, but hardly anyone compliments me anymore. i heard you can prevent my face from looking older as well as turn back the clock. any advice? lisa: Congratulations on your successful, healthy lifestyle so far. Believe it or not, your question is very common. A lot more body fat is stored in the face than most people realize (until they compare before-and-after photos or hear comments from others). But not to worry, because there is a solution. You don’t have to choose between a fit body and a youthful face—you can have both.

We all know that those leaner-looking people who are typically runners, hikers, triathletes, yoga buffs, and cyclists can develop skinny-looking faces with hollow cheeks. Lifelong sun damage further contributes to the loss of the fatty layer beneath the skin. This is commonly referred to as the classic “runner’s face.” Runner’s face typically occurs in both men and women, ages 30+. While exercising, an athlete burns off fat beneath the layers of his/her skin. The marked loss of fatty tissue results in a loss of volume

which leads to a prominent appearance of the bones, accelerated development of skin laxity and deepening of wrinkles. Though you may look like a 20-year-old from the chest down or from behind, your face will easily give away your age.

The leaner we are, the less fat we have in our face. At the same time, as we age we lose facial volume. It’s difficult for people who have always been considered attractive to suddenly notice that their skin is frail, thin, bruises more easily, and sags. This adds to the emotional distress caused by aging in general. My opinion is that the most overlooked sign of aging is loss of volume in the mid-face. As we age, the mid-face loses fat and begins to narrow, shifting the face downward making the mid-face appear bony. Volume loss here contributes to the appearance of drooping and sagging of the cheeks and eyes. It can begin in our 20s.

What are my nonsurgical options? i do not want to undergo facial plastic surgery at this point in time. There’s a new product on the market—Juvederm® Voluma®. It’s the only hyaluronic acid filler approved for use in the mid-face and we offer this treatment at Ultra Smooth Skin. Juvederm® Voluma® is a thick, injectable hyaluronic acid volumizer that recontours the face to restore volume to the cheeks, cheekbone, nasolabial folds, mouth corners and jaw line. Results are instant, revealing a subtle, yet natural aesthetic lift recreating the “triangle of beauty.” It’s thicker than regular Juvederm® which the FDA recently approved for up to two years for longevity.

What about my neck? Can you do something about my neck? It is difficult to treat the neck. We do not inject fillers in the neck. Some people fight neck laxity and damage with Fraxel and Thermage treatments. Another option is a neck lift performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Should i stop working out so much in order to save my face? Absolutely never stop working out and doing what you love! I’ve never told anyone to stop running so they could look younger—it’s so easy to plump a gaunt face right back up by injecting a little Voluma®.

How do i know if i am a good candidate? i don’t expect a miracle or that my face will look like it did when i was 20, i just want an enhancement and less loose skin. We can do an assessment to determine whether you’re a good candidate and give you a fair analysis. It’s wonderful that you have realistic expectations. We do not want to treat anyone who isn’t realistic. We cannot make someone look like they did 25 years ago, but certainly it is possible turn back the clock 5 – 8 years, and most importantly we can provide maintenance. It is acceptable to have a few wrinkles at some point, and those lines won’t diminish your beauty. Want proof? Look for current photos of Catherine Deneuve or Kate Moss.

How many syringes will i need? It’s difficult to predetermine, but most people start out with one or two syringes of Voluma®. We periodically assess you (every 6 months) after the initial treatment.

Can i get Voluma® in other areas like my lips or lower face? No, Voluma® is only FDA approved for the mid-face. However, we can place Juvederm® XC in the lower face and lips as long as you are currently natural-looking in those areas. We don’t inject people who already have too much product in their face or lips or who do not have realistic expectations.

How many injections have you performed? I’ve performed thousands of cheek and mid-face injections. Ultra Smooth Skin is one of the top purchasers of Botox® and Juvederm® in the country. We’ve earned a “Black Diamond” certification from Allergan, the makers of Botox® and Juvederm®, an honor earned by fewer than 1% of all medical aesthetic practices. It’s awarded to leaders in the field, and demonstrates a commitment to the highest level of patient care.

Additionally, I completed the de Maio Master’s Voluma® Technique course taught by the wonderful Mauricio de Maio, MD, Sao Paulo, Brazil, a renowned plastic surgeon and expert Voluma® pioneer injector. I am privileged to be one of a few nationwide facial-filler injectors to be recently trained by Dr. de Maio.

ALL TOGEThER WhEN?

Kathy Peterson doesn’t get to see her family much. She spends most of her days teaching first graders in Mesa. Her husband Paul often works past 7:00pm for the State Land Department. She has a daughter at college in San Antonio, and another daughter who’s juggling a job and ASU, where she’s majoring in communications. Her son is either going to high school, working at Flower Child, or dancing on stage with Miley Cyrus (see sidebar).

Kathy is resigned to the fact that getting her group of go-getters together is a lot like herding cats. “This year’s Mother’s Day festivities had to be pushed back to 8:00pm to accommodate everyone’s work schedules,” she explains. “And the family photo from last summer was the first one we’ve had taken in years.”

But through it all, the Petersons have managed to stay close, thanks in part to a shared love of exercise. Everyone in the family goes to the Village on a regular basis—at different times, of course—and her oldest daughter even worked at the Gainey Village Club for nearly four years. We caught up with Kathy for a quick chat about fitness, family and finding time for what’s important.

the village: Why is health and fitness such a big part of your family dynamic? kathy peterson: There are lots of reasons. First of all, exercise relieves stress. And when you’re busy running around all the time and working hard, you really need that time to decompress. Exercise makes everything feel good, and staying active helps everyone in our family maintain a positive outlook on life.

are most of the people you hang out with from the Village? Oh yes—and many of the friends we made in the early 1980s at the Village are still our friends today! People who work out together tend to bond together. We’ve been to many parties hosted by friends we’ve made at the Village, and I enjoy seeing familiar faces at the grocery store, restaurants, the mall or even a gas station. You might not even be friends with someone, but when you have the common bond of seeing each other at the Village working out you have a reason to offer them a hello or a smile when you see them.

ThIS CAMELBACK FAMILY MAY BE ON dIFFERENT SChEdULES, BUT ThEY’RE BOUNd TOGEThER BY LOvE ANd ACTIvITY.

Page 31: BetterLIFE Summer 2014

Do you go to a lot of the events at the Village? I’m more anti-social in that area, but my husband LOVES the parties at the club. He usually attends any Village party he can, from Casino Night to the Luau they just had.

you mentioned that your history with the Village goes back to the 1980s. How did that happen? My husband Paul joined the club in 1980 to play tennis, before I even knew him. A fellow tennis player named Bill, who was dating my sister—and is now my brother-in-law, by the way—told Paul that I was a tall, pretty blonde. Bill had no idea that I was a five-foot-three brunette! Well, Paul was in for a surprise on our blind date, but we hit it off and have been married for 29 years. We got married in 1985 and have both been members of the Village ever since.

What was the club like in those days? It was very different. I don’t even think it was part of DMB back then. It was mostly just for tennis players. There was a pool, but it was small and was located where the women’s locker room is today. They also had a weight room, but it was in the men’s locker room—I guess women didn’t lift weights back in the day!

What sorts of activities do you like to do at the Village now? I love to run, do yoga and lift weights—now that I don’t have to go into the men’s locker room! My husband does spin at least five times a week and is still an avid tennis player. If we can find any time to be together, Paul and I will sometimes have a drink in the lounge and watch some of the members play tennis or sports on TV. My three children all enjoy spin, yoga, weights and swimming. My middle daughter is a college swimmer and she uses the weight room every time she’s back at home on a break.

What’s your favorite thing about the Village? Oh, there are so many great things that it’s hard to pick just one. I love the fact that the Village is open all day and we can go whenever we want. That’s a big deal for us, because even though we’re on different schedules we can all find time to get our workouts in.

We also love the Village staff. The front desk crew is so friendly, fun and just amazing. They have me checked in before I enter the front door. I always tell them they need to put out a tip jar—I would definitely contribute to that! The trainers in the weight room are also great. Even if you don’t train with them they’re always willing to answer a question or offer advice. I also want to praise the managers. Anytime I’ve had a concern they’ve always listened to me and worked hard to find an answer.

Have you had any dramatic physical transformations since joining the club? We really haven’t because we’ve been dedicated to working out consistently all these years. We make going to the Village a priority and expect to do so for many more wonderful years. We are getting more wrinkles, but that’s about it!

Matt Peterson on stage this year with Miley Cyrus.

GOING ThE EXTRA MILEYKathy Peterson’s 17-year-old son Matt had the good fortune of meeting Miley Cyrus when he was in sixth grade. In 2009, she picked him out of a crowd of about 50 screaming kids (mostly girls) to hang out with her during a KISS FM radio show. He never forgot how nice she was to him back then, so this year he wanted to see her when she came to town on February 27 during her Bangerz tour.

Tickets were sold out before Matt could get any, so he decided to climb Camelback mountain, get naked and make a YouTube video inviting Miley to his prom instead. The media went crazy over the video thanks to Johnjay and Rich from KISS FM, and Matt and his video became a viral sensation. “Ryan Seacrest interviewed Matt, Wendy Williams did a segment on him, E News did several spotlights on him and he was in several magazines,” Kathy recalls. “It honestly was crazy!”

Matt made his whole family proud by handling himself with poise and pizzazz during every interview. And while Miley didn’t accept Matt’s invitation to prom, she sang Adore You and danced with him onstage at US Airways Center in front of thousands of screaming fans.

"I love the fact that the Village is open all day… because even though we’re on different schedules we can all find time to get our workouts in."
