BIG TEN MEN’S BASKETBALL WEEKLY RELEASE PAGE 2 OF 7

BIG LIFE. BIG STAGE. BIG TEN.

Ready for the Challenge:This week's schedule features the 12th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge, which tips off Monday evening and runs through Wednesday night. The Challenge features top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioner's Cup on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. The Big Ten won last year's Challenge, 6-5, with wins from Illinois, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin. The complete 2010 Challenge schedule can be found on Page 1 of this release.

Already on the Schedule:Entering ACC/Big Ten Challenge play this week, the two conferences have already squared off three times, with the Big Ten winning each of those matchups. On Nov. 19, Illinois defeated Maryland, a team receiving votes in both polls at the time, 80-76, in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer at Madison Square Garden. Also that day, Minnesota beat then-No. 8/8 North Carolina, 72-67, at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Most recently, Wisconsin defeated Boston College, 65-55, at the Old Spice Classic on Friday.

More on the Challenge:This year's ACC/Big Ten Challenge features 10 teams that are either ranked or receiving votes in the latest Associated Press and/or ESPN/USA Today Coaches polls. The Big Ten boasts five teams ranked in each poll and two teams receiving votes outside the coaches poll, while the ACC claims the top-ranked team in each poll (Duke) and two squads receiving votes outside each poll's top 25.

Putting Things in to Perspective:After the first three weeks of play, the Big Ten is a combined 52-11 (.825), which ranks first in overall winning percentage among the ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, SEC and Pac-10 conferences. Big Ten teams are averaging 4.7 wins per team, which leads the other five conferences.

Where They Rank: The Big Ten is tied for the lead among all conferenc-es with five teams ranked in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and is tied for second with five teams ranked by the Associated Press. Ohio State moved up one spot in each poll to No. 2, while Michigan State comes in at No. 6 in both polls. Minnesota remains at No. 15 in the AP poll, but is up four spots to No. 13 in the coaches rankings. Illinois is ranked No. 20 by the AP and No. 21 by the coaches, while Purdue is ranked No. 22 by the AP and No. 18 by the coaches. Wisconsin and Northwestern are receiving votes outside the coaches' top 25.

Running Up The Score: Through the first three weeks of the season, Big Ten teams have already combined for four 100-point games. At this point last season, Big Ten teams had scored 100 or more points three times and ended the season with six 100+-point contests. Iowa owns the Big Ten's highest single-game output so far this year, having scored 111 against SIU-Edwardsville on Friday, marking the program's highest total since 1998.

Odds and Ends:Several Big Ten players have either recently reached or are nearing significant career milestones. Among them: Penn State's Talor Battle became the only player in program history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists in a career ... Northwestern's Michael Thompson is one assist shy of becoming just the second player in program his-tory with 400 career assists ... Purdue's JaJuan Johnson needs one more block to become the sec-ond player in Boilermaker history with 200 in his career ... Illinois' Mike Davis needs 10 rebounds to enter his school's top-10 list ... Illinois' Mike Tisdale needs 27 points for 1,000 in his career ... Ohio State's David Lighty moved into his school's top 10 list with 147 career steals and passed Scoonie Penn over the weekend on the program's scoring chart, currently with 1,090 in his career.

You'd Better Watch Out:The Big Ten leads all conferences with 10 players named to the John R. Wooden Award and Naismith Award preseason watch lists. Illinois' Demetri McCamey, Michigan State's Kalin Lucas and Durrell Summers, Northwestern's John Shurna, Ohio State's William Buford, Penn State's Talor Battle, Purdue's JaJuan Johnson and E'Twaun Moore and Wisconsin's Jon Leuer earned spots on both lists, while Buckeye freshman Jared Sullinger earned a spot on the Naismith watch list, and Purdue's Robbie Hummel was named to the Wooden watch list before suffering a season-ending injury.

Stay CLASSy:The Big Ten leads all conferences with four players, Minnesota's Blake Hoffarber, Ohio State's David Lighty, Purdue's E'Twaun Moore and Wisconsin's Jon Leuer, named candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a stu-dent-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.

Life on the Big Stage:This season, every Big Ten home game will be pro-duced and distributed to a live national audience. The Big Ten Network, which is available in more than 75 million homes in the U.S. and Canada, will broadcast over 100 events on its linear channel or on www.BigTenNetwork.com. More than 75 games will be broadcast by an ESPN platform - ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or ESPN3, and CBS Sports will carry 15 games.

March is (Almost) On:The Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament returns to Indianapolis March 10-13, 2011 for the fourth year of a five-year agreement that puts both the men's and women's events in the Circle City. All-session tickets for the 2011 Big Ten Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments are on sale now. For more information, visit www.bigten.org.

Let the Madness Begin:The Big Ten Conference will serve as host for the second and third rounds of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Games will be played at the United Center in Chicago, and a limited number of tickets are still available. Visit www.bigten.org for more information.
