It was through Ian, the school-mate of a close Robinson friend, TomMurray, that Iwas offered the chance to completely changemy life,andtomergemyhobbiesandmydayjob:thechance tomakea living fromthe land. ThelandwasIan’sparents’100acrefarminNorthShropshire,abouttoberentedoutduetothepoorhealthof Ian’sFather. Theopportunitywastimelyandtoogoodtomiss.Intermittingfrom my PhD and my funding, I made themove to the outskirts of a village calledTreflach,situatedinthehillsthatrisefromtheShropshire Plain, nestled underneath Offa’sDyke, twenty miles west of Shrewsbury. Iwasmetwithbreathtakingviewsand,ineverysense,amountaintoclimb.

As I pulledup at theendof the farm’s extensivedrive, the long, hotsummerof2006was in full swing. The longsweatyharvestwasalsobeginningandtherewasunfathomableactivityallaroundme.TreflachFarm may be small but I understood neither the language nor themachineryofaharvestandwassubmergedforfourmonthsinaworldthatwasentirelyalientome. ThiswasexactlywhatwasrequiredforIan and me, an opportunity to work for, and with, those who hadbeen ‘born into’farmingandfromwhom,throughgentlequestioning

Secondly,wewanted towork in away thattreatedtheland,theenvironmentandanylivestockwithrespectandkepttheirwelfareasourbottomline.Finally,wewouldnotbeafraidtooperateoutsideofthereceivedwisdompasseddowntousfrommanyaharvesthand.

Wedecidedtobeginwithpigsas theytakevery little time, just sixmonths,toreachslaughterweight. Inorder to farmethically, aswe saw it,wehad to think andworkoutsidetheestablishedmodelsoffarminginourarea.Inraisingourstockwedeviated from these in fourways. Firstly,wewould notroutinely use antibiotics. We knew that if we kept amanageablenumber of animals and ensured that we spent enough time withourstockeveryday,wecouldpickuponsymptomsofillnessoranyabnormalbehaviourquickly,andisolateandtreatthepigasnecessary

using curative rather than preventativemedicine.

Secondly, we wanted pigs to be able toexpress their natural behaviours. This islargely achieved through ensuring thatallofourpigshavepermanentaccesstofields,allowingthemtonoseuptheturfin search of tasty roots and grubs, andto places to wallow and areas of shade,allowing them tokeepcool andpreventsunburninthesummermonths.Wealsoprovide well-anchored scratching postsor trees enabling them to dislodge any

Thirdly, itwasouraim togrowandmill allofourpig feedon-site.Thisensuresahighqualityfeedandonethatisnotbulkedoutwiththeusual largequantitiesof soyaofethicallyuncertainprovenance.
