La Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Orvieto una persona giuridica privata dotata di piena au-

tonomia statutaria e gestionale, che dal 1991 ha raccolto la missione flantropica della Cassa di

Risparmio di Orvieto, costituita da 40 privati cittadini il 17 novembre del 1852, divenuta, a seguito

this year's UMBRIA JAZZ WINTER is a very special one it is

the twentieth edition of the Festival. It began in 1993, and over

the years it has earned itself a special place on the Italian jazzscene and beyond.

The Festival follows a successful formula that has been tried and

tested over the years. It brings together tourism and great music, but

on top of that there is also the hospitality of one of the most beautiful

cities in Umbria and its rich heritage of history and art, not to mention

its renowned ne food and wine. These many different elements all

come together in the Festival programme created by artistic director

Carlo Pagnotta.

There are many important names on this year's programme:

sensation at the most recent summer edition of Umbria Jazz;

very rst edition of the Festival back in 1993; gospel music withd b J & the nhvll gpl sph; plus many

others. The nal evening includes TOP JAZZ 2012, a concert

organised in conjunction with the prestigious Italian jazz magazine

Musica Jazz and featuring the winners of their annual poll.

Orvieto's magnicent Cathedral, designed by Lorenzo Maitani and

built in the 1300s - 1500s, will once again be the setting for the

special Mass for peace on the afternoon of New Year's Day, com-

plete with gospel choir. This unforgettable experience sees different

cultures and religious expressions coming together thanks to music.

The evening concerts take place at: the Teatro Mancinelli, inaugurated

in 1886; the Palazzo del Popolo, built of basalt and tuff (a volcanic

rock) and recorded in documents as far back as the 1200s; Palazzodei Sette, built around 1300 using imposing vaults and arches, and

anked by the tower called the Torre del Papa; and Palazzo Soliano,

home of the Museo Emilio Greco, the museum that houses the sculp-

ture and drawings donated by artist Emilio Greco to the city.

The other venues are: the Sala del Carmine, a deconsecrated church

built in the 1300s as part of the larger Carmine convent; and the

Ristorante San Francesco, located in a building that was originally

a Franciscan convent and is today the perfect setting for the special

New Year's Eve jazz dinner on 31 December and for the jazz lunches

and dinners throughout the Festival.

K ellpays tribute to 1619 Broadway, the legendary Brill Building, which is part of the history of songwrit-

ing in New York. He leaves out the songwriters whose works are often performed by jazz musicians (the excep-

tions are Duke Ellington and Jimmy Hamilton), concentrating instead on some of the songs that were written at

1619 Broadway by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen, Sam Cooke, Harry Warren, Burt Bacharach, Paul Simon

and Carole King (on her own and with Gerry Gofn).

most sensational new singer of recent years. This will be his

debut at Umbria Jazz, and he will be performing throughout

the Festival. His rst album, entitled Water, was a great suc-

cess and, surprisingly for a debut album, was nominated for the

Best Jazz Vocal Album at the Grammy Awards. His second recording,

Be Good, was released in February 2012.

of how two artists can reinterpret some of Italys classic songs in an innovative way.

d alx is one of the most highly rated vocalists on the

Chicago scene. She rst appeared at Umbria Jazz in the sum-

mer of 2009, when audiences were able to discover the ease

with which she moves between genres ranging from gospel to

blues, R&B and soul. She will be performing on all ve days of the

Festival in Orvieto.

young Louisiana-born musician Jh b (he born in

1986) had already played at Carnegie Hall by the age of 18.

As well as playing piano and singing, he is also an excellent

multi-instrumentalist who can easily shift to sax and bass.

Thanks to all of these abilities, he can be considered as one of the

leading members in the new generation of American jazz musicians.

In Orvieto he will be giving a solo concert for piano and voice.

discovered by Umbrian audiences at the most recent summer

edition of Umbria Jazz. A native of Cuba, he is a percussionist

(congas especially), singer and composer who has been enjoy-

ing great success in New York. The turning point in his career came in

2000 when he won the Thelonious Monk Institute Competition and

moved to New York. Among the many names he has worked with

in recent years are Paquito DRivera, Eddie Palmieri, Stefon Harris,

Cassandra Wilson and Joe Lovano.

album dedicated to the music of the 20s and 30s. It features

jazz compositions dating from the mid-20s to the mid-30s,with music from New Orleans and Chicago that has never before

Ebony Concert.

interesting groups to appear on the Italian music scene in

recent years. Quintorigo plays Jimi Hendrix is a tribute to

a musician who was one of the most important innovators of

the twentieth century (this year would have been Hendrixs seventieth

birthday). Appearing as special guest is e m, son of the jazz

musician Charles Mingus.

the twentieth edition of Umbria Jazz Winter will end on a high

note: on 1 January 2013 at 9.30 p.m. in the Teatro Mancinelli

there will be the award ceremony of the thirt ieth edition of the

annual Top Jazz poll held by the monthly Italian jazz maga-

zine Musica Jazz (2014 will mark its seventieth year of uninterrupted

publication).

Every year since 1982, Musica Jazz has asked Italys best critics to

vote for the years top jazz artists. After six years in which the poll was

only for Italian musicians, it has gone back to its original format and

now also includes categories for international artists.

This event strengthens the partnership between the two leading play-

ers in Italian ja zz, a partnership which began in the summer of 2010

when Musica Jazz became the media partner of Umbria Jazz.

triple set will include two other Berklee alumni; eighteen-year-old drummer

Concerto di PasquaNel periodo di Pasqua il Concerto di musica sinonica in Duomo celebra labbinamento tra un luogo capace di espri-mere signifcati artistici, monumentali e religiosi, con un complesso musicale prestigioso di altissimo proflo artistico,elementi, questi, che aggiungono un valore comunicativo eccezionale allevento.Il Concerto, eseguito per la prima volta negli anni 70, ha assunto carattere di ricorrenza e si consolidato nellarco

degli anni acquisendo prestigio e ama ricorrenti.

PalombellaLa Palombella una secolare esta della tradizione che si celebra il giorno della Pentecoste nella Piazza del Duomodove una colomba, opportunamente protetta, rappresentando la discesa dello Spirito Santo sugli Apostoli e sullaMadonna, scivola lungo un cavo teso ra il tetto della Chiesa di San Francesco e un cenacolo che viene eretto davantialla porta maggiore della Cattedrale.La esta, esaltando i valori di pace e econdit, a distanza di secoli continua a mantenere intatto il vero ascino diuna esta di popolo.

Corpus DominiIl palcoscenico della maniestazione il centro storico della citt con le sue vie, le sue piazze e i vicoli addobbaticon gli stendardi della Festa. Il giorno del Corpus Domini, inatti, una processione religiosa e un lungo corteo storicosflano per i vicoli e le strade di Orvieto. Il corteo religioso porta in processione il Corporale del miracolo eucaristico

di Bolsena, che apparve in pubblico per la prima volta nel 1263 custodito allinterno di un prezioso tabernacolo. Ilcorteo storico reinterpreta, attraverso i suoi 400 fguranti, il glorioso passato della citt mettendo in scena il poterecivile e la orza militare del libero Comune medievale. La sera precedente rievocazioni di vita dellepoca quali ilCorteo delle Dame, sbandieratori e balli medievali, anno da cornice allevento principale.
