Dr Harry Miller, the founder of both Tsuen Wan

and Hong Kong Adventist Hospitals, advocated

and practiced a number of activities contributing

to healthy living. The following abridged list is

from one of his letters on the secrets of longevity.

1. Abstain from harmful habits such as drinking alcoholic beverages, smoking and consuming stimulants like coffee and tea.

2. Eat intelligently. Maintain a balanced diet to

receive all the needed building materials including the best energy foods and those that increase resistance to diseases. If you change to a vegetarian diet, be sure to obtain the necessary nutrients for maintaining red blood cells, strong muscles, calm nerves and bountiful energy.

11. Live sanely. Enjoy your work, family and friends.

Keep a tune in your heart, a smile on your face, a light in your eye,

a spring in your step, a plan in your mind and hope in your soul,

and God will bless you with a satisfying life.

3. Be kind to your stomach. Overeating burdens the entire system. Eat at regular times, avoiding snacks between meals or late at night. An occasional short fast is by far better than indulging in rich foods.

4. Stop worrying. Worry causes loss of sleep, disrupts digestion, fatigues the mind, depresses all the vital organs and is often the reason for body systems breaking down.

5. Work energetically. Physical exertion and mental work outs strengthen your overall being. Neglected talents and unused power shrink and become stunted. Exercise encourages growth and development because the body sends extra blood to nourish those parts being used.

6. Watch your weight. A person’s weight after the age of 65 should not be more than at 25.

7. Be proactive in avoiding illness but if ill, take the utmost care to quickly recovery. Yearly medical check-ups should be the rule, even when feeling well.

8. Cultivate regularity in eating, sleeping, exercising and working. While there are unavoidable exceptions to most rules, revert to regularity as soon as possible.

9. Make full use of nature’s health-preserving and health-restoring agents such as fresh air, sunlight, pure water (inside and out), physical exercise, regular periods of rest and positive thinking.

10.Avoid becoming an extremist or faddist. Learn from studying reputable authoritative works what the basic rules of good living are and then do not spend all your time thinking about your health.

三、善待腸胃。飲食定時和定量， 偶然短時間禁食無妨，切忌暴 飲暴食。不宜在兩餐之間或太 晚吃東西，高鹽高糖高脂高熱 量的食物亦不宜多吃。

四、放下憂慮。憂慮令人難以成眠， 消化遲滯；心靈疲憊，身體 機能也會變得緩慢，甚至拖垮 身體各個系統。

五、積極工作。多動腦筋和勤做運 動可促進血液循環，令身體得 到額外的滋養，百利而無一害， 反之，墮怠只會令身體日漸衰弱。

六、注意體重。六十五歲時的體重 不應該比二十五歲時重。

七、預防疾病，萬一患病應積極治 理，盡快康復。即使自我感覺 良好，都應該每年接受一次身 體檢查。

八、飲食、睡覺、運動和工作要有 規律。如因故無法遵守，也應 該讓作息盡快回復正常。

九、親近大自然，如多呼吸新鮮空 氣、接觸陽光、飲用乾淨的水， 還有做運動、定時休息和保 持正面的想法。

十、避免變得極端。我們固然可以 向權威人士學習活得健康又豐 盛的方法，但切勿因而思慮過 度，勞心費神。

Since the beginningIn the 1960s, 80-year-old American physician Dr Harry Miller, well known as the “China doctor” for his decades of service in China, took up yet another challenge to build a hospital in Hong Kong on the invitation of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. With selfless dedication and extraordinary perseverance, he accomplished the establishment of two hospitals in the city.

Establishment of Tsuen Wan Adventist HospitalAt the time, Tsuen Wan was a small coastal town in the New Territories where people led an economically modest life. In light of the lack of healthcare services in the area, Dr Miller decided this would be the home of the hospital to be built. A difficult project it was made possible with the help of the church, Jockey Club, and the Hong Kong and U.S. governments, along with many other generous individuals. Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital finally began service in 1964 even though funding was still being raised for the completion of its top level.

走過歲月長廊一九六零年代，來自美國的米勒爾醫生接受了基督復臨安息日會的邀請，遠赴香港籌辦醫院。憑藉許多人無私的精神和無比的毅力，他為香港設立了兩間醫院。

荃灣港安醫院的成立當時，荃灣雖是個臨海的小市鎮，但缺乏醫療服務，居民生活亦不算富庶。恰恰正是這些原因，令米勒爾醫生選址於此。建院過程波折重重，幸得教會、賽馬會、香港和美國政府、新知舊友紛紛伸出緩手，荃灣港安醫院終於在一九六四年投入服務──即使仍在籌款興建醫院大樓的頂層。

There were squatter huts going all the way up the hill nearby TWAH in 1970s荃灣港安醫院成立初期，四周有不少木屋。

In the early years, the hospital mainly served marine residents living on sampans, factory workers and villagers living in squatter huts in the neighbourhood. Patients were offered affordable healthcare regardless of whether they were rich or poor. The hospital relied on charitable donations from the church and local businesses until the establishment of its sister institution, the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital, and received continual financial support from the church.

Establishment ofHong Kong Adventist HospitalDr Miller started building the second hospital in the late 1960s, with the aim of extending quality healthcare services to residents on Hong Kong Island and to open up a new source of revenue channelled to the Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital to maintain its services for New Territories residents.

Pastors Ezra Longway and Robert Milne helped with planning and fundraising for the second hospital, as they did for the first one. Dr Chan Shun, the founder and former Chair and Managing Director of Crocodile Garments Limited, contributed the first HK$1 million, with donations from many other philanthropists following. The tireless efforts of its founders saw the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital established in 1971.

The hospital soon earned city-wide reputation for quality healthcare services. Apart from nurses who were trained in-house, almost all staff members, including doctors, administrators and department heads were missionaries from abroad. They received only humble remunerations for their work.

Since their inception, both hospitals have been serving the community on a not-for-profit basis, using revenue from their services to finance day-to-day operations, purchase of new equipment, addition of facilities and building new hospitals.

荃灣港安成立初期，主要為住在碼頭舢舨的「水上人」、工廠工人和附近山區居民服務，從來不曾因為他們無力支付全額醫療費用而拒諸門外。不難想像，維持這帶有慈善性質的服務，唯有倚仗教會支持和香港商界贊助，直到香港港安醫院成立，加上教會持續資助，情況才逐漸改善。

香港港安醫院的源起踏入六十年代後期，米勒爾醫生計劃在香港島興建另一間醫院。一方面為滿足香港區居民對高質素醫療服務的需求；另一方面，希望可以為荃灣港安提供經濟支持，維持其營運，以為新界區居民提供醫療服務。

興建荃灣港安時，羅威牧師和米倫耳牧師便一直從旁協助。這一次，他們再度落力幫助策劃與募捐，許多善長亦繼續無條件支持米勒爾醫生。鱷魚恤有限公司的創辦人及前主席陳俊先生率先捐出一百萬元，各界隨之紛紛踴躍捐助。經過一番努力，香港港安醫院於一九七一年成立。

高質素的醫療服務很快得到認同。不過，與荃灣港安一樣，除醫院自行訓練出來的護士外，由行政人員、醫生到部門主管，在香港港安工作的幾乎都是外國傳教士，只支取微薄薪酬。

時至今日，兩間醫院仍維持非牟利性質，收入用作日常營運、更新設施和儀器，添置設備及興建新醫院。

Unwavering mission to provide quality careOver the decades, Hong Kong has gone through a lot of socio-economic changes. Growing with their communities, the two Adventist hospitals have been proactively introducing new medical technologies to ensure the provision of professional care to patients. Community outreach programs at both hospitals promote preventive care through body checks, talks and various other public activities. While so many things are evolving, the Adventist dedication to serve the people remains unchanged.

唯有醫心恆久不變時移世易，香港的社會和經濟環境不斷變化，香港港安和荃灣港安醫院亦緊隨此步伐急速發展，既積極引入各種醫療技術和儀器，提供專業、適切的醫療服務；又著力通過不同活動、身體檢查、講座和計劃等，來推動「預防醫學」。歲月匆匆，兩間醫院與香港同步成長，但始終不變的，是致力為人群服務的精神。

Hong Kong Adventist Hospital continuously looks to improve the quality and range of services it provides by integrating advanced technology to support the work of our physicians and nurses. In 2010, the comprehensive one-stop service offered at the Heart Center was substantively elevated with the launch of the latest Artis zee Biplane system. In the same year, we also established the Minimally Invasive Surgery and Endoscopy Education Center.

港安醫院乃非牟利的基督教私營醫院，服務香港數十載，以高質素、富愛心的醫療服務而聞名。我們奉行基督復臨安息日會的哲理和教導，推崇「全人健康」，關注大眾的身、心、靈。不單提供醫療服務，還舉辦各類型健康講座和推廣活動、健康促進計劃等等，增加大眾對疾病和身體的認識，培養良好的生活習慣，活出健康豐盛的人生。

香港港安醫院一向積極引入各種先進儀器，拓展服務範圍，不斷精益求精。於二零一零年引進最新型號的雙向系統，令一站式心臟中心的服務更臻完善，同時設立微創手術及內窺鏡教育中心。並先後在二零一二年和二零一三年設立了全新香港港安腫瘤中心，和手術室、機械臂及微創手術中心。接下來，將設立第二所心導管檢查及介入治療中心，及全新深切治療部。

The Hong Kong Adventist Oncology Center commenced service in 2012 followed by the opening of the new Operating Rooms, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgical Center in 2013. The construction of a second Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Center, and a new Intensive Care Unit is underway.

Since Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital opened its doors, it has been evolving with improvements. In order to provide comprehensive heart health checks, diagnosis and treatment, the new Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Center was opened in 2011. In 2012, our newly founded Lithotripsy Center began lithotripsy treatment of kidney and ureter stones. In the past years, the hospital has brought in new advanced diagnostic imaging equipment such as magnetic resonance imaging, computerized tomography and radiological imaging machines. To meet the ever-changing needs of local residents, specialist clinics such as Breast Health Center, Women Health Clinic, Surgical Clinic and Skin Clinic were established.

We are guided by our commitment to provide professional and quality service, and to improve people’s physical, emotional and mental health. We care about overall community health and remain abreast of development in government healthcare policy to continue serving patients. Our aim and hope is that each individual is able to nurture a better lifestyle and live a fuller, longer life through improved health and wellbeing.

多年來，荃灣港安醫院持續革新：二零一一年，設立了心臟中心和心導管檢查及介入治療中心，提供全面的心臟檢查、診斷及治療服務；二零一二年，新增體外碎石治療中心，提供體外衝擊波碎石治療。近年不僅引入磁力共振和電腦掃描等高科技醫療設備和放射診斷儀器，且著重發展專科服務，陸續開設了多間專科診所，如乳房健康中心、婦女健康中心、外科診所和皮膚診所等等，配合區內居民的需要。

Accreditations Hong Kong Adventist Hospital and Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital both achieved accreditation from the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards (ACHS) in 2010. In 2012, our consistently high-quality medical services were once again recognized by ACHS through our continued accreditation. In 2009, our clinical laboratory was accredited by The Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (HOKLAS), making us the first private hospital in Hong Kong to obtain this international accreditation.

Health Promoting Hospitals In 2012, the two Adventist Hospitals in Hong Kong became the first hospitals in the city to be accepted as members of the Health Promoting Hospitals Network, initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO). The global network assists health care organizations to implement health promotion and education programs.

健康促進醫院香港港安及荃灣港安醫院於二零一二年正式加入「健康促進醫院國際醫療網絡」，成為全港澳區首兩間加入此國際醫療網絡的醫院。此網絡由世界衛生組織創始，旨在提倡並協助醫療機構推廣其健康促進理念。

Adventist Health Global NetworkThe two hospitals in Hong Kong are part of the Seventh-day Adventist Church network operating over 170 Adventist Health hospitals, and 350 medical institutions around the world. The Loma Linda University Hospital, a subsidiary of the Church in the United States of America is highly regarded and renowned as a reputable medical training school and research center.

The Hong Kong Adventist Hospital was established in 1971 and is well known for its dedication to providing premium healthcare services to people from different cultural backgrounds, supported by state-of-the-art technology and experienced medical teams and staff. It provides optimal and reliable medical services to local residents as well as people from other countries, including Japan.

The Theresa Po CyberKnife Center, opened in 2006, offers additional options to cancer patients. The robotic stereotactic radiotherapy system – CyberKnife G4 System – is capable of excellent accuracy measured in sub-millimeters to achieve better treatment outcome. In order to continue providing all-round treatment and quality care for patients, the Hong Kong Adventist Oncology Center, featuring advance TomoTherapy technology, was established in 2012. The hospital is currently the only facility in Hong Kong that offers both cutting-edge technologies, CyberKnife and TomoTherapy. Our case coordinator provides patients with tailored care service through close follow-up of their consultation and treatment arrangements during the treatment period.

香港港安醫院成立於一九七一年，重視醫術與科技結合，集結富經驗的醫生和醫護人員，以愛心和熱誠提供專業服務，照顧不同文化人士的需要。本院不單得到香港市民的認同，亦是不少在港生活或公幹的外籍人士（包括日籍人士）的指定醫療機構。

二零零六年，成立寶詠琴數碼導航刀中心，引入先進的定位放射治療系統數碼導航刀，其準確度以次毫米計算，為腫瘤病人帶來新希望；二零一二年，成立香港港安腫瘤中心，提供全面性的治療方案，且引入先進的高速螺旋放射治療系統，成為全港唯一同時提供這兩種尖端醫療技術的平台。中心的統籌主任更會「一對一」專責照顧及跟進病人於治療期間的診治安排。

For a number of years, the hospital has collaborated with Wanchai District Council in delivering health messages to the community through health seminars and physical checks. The hospital has extended their community initiatives to include assistance to patients with financial need through Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Foundation.

多年來，我們一直積極向社區宣揚健康的訊息，又與灣仔區議會合作，舉辦健康講座和檢查等，並通過「港安醫院慈善基金」，照顧經濟有需要的病人。

MIS Center, which is equipped with an all-in-one solution system, commenced service. A da Vinci robotic surgical system and other minimally invasive surgery tools are also available onsite.

Early in 1985, the Hong Kong Adventist Heart Center was the first of its kind established by a private hospital in Hong Kong and has developed into a leading world-class cardiac center offering one-stop service. The Center has its own onsite Cardio-Pulmonary Laboratory, and Cardiac Catheterization & Interventional Center equipped with the latest Artis zee Biplane system. Recently, the hospital introduced optical coherence tomography, a computer-based imaging system to help cardiologists obtain accurate visual of patients’ pathological changes in heart vessels. The Center’s experienced cardiologists are leaders in their fields, introducing most advance treatment technologies, including catheter ablation for arrhythmia, transcatheter aortic valve implantation and MitraClip therapy for mitral regurgitation.

Since its establishment in 1964, Tsuen Wan Adventist Hospital has been the only private hospital in New Territories West and has developed deep roots within the community. For years, the hospital has been responsive to residents’ needs and dedicated to serving the community by providing professional and specialized services with compassionate care.

In response to the growing demand for cardiac services, we established one-stop cardiac services in 2011, managed by a group of Cardiologists, to provide examination, diagnosis and treatment services, including interventional treatment. In 2012, we partnered with Yan Chai Hospital and launched the Heart Charity Program. The program provides free cardiac interventional procedures for patients in financial need and offers discounts to cardiac patients referred by public hospitals. The aim of this collaboration is to improve the overall quality of healthcare for the community, as well as provide proper and timely treatment for cardiac patients.

荃灣港安醫院成立於一九六四年，是新界西唯一一所私營醫院。多年來，一直秉承服務社區的宗旨，為市民提供優質及專業的醫療服務，體貼居民的需要，更早已與社區融為一體。

考慮到新界西區及九龍西區對心臟專科服務的需求，本院於二零一一年設立心臟中心，由心臟專科醫生主理，提供檢查、診斷和治療服務（包括介入治療），並於二零一二年與仁濟醫院合作，推出「心臟手術慈善計劃」，為有需要的心臟病人提供免費的介入治療，並為公立醫院的心臟病人提供優惠，希望通過這協作模式，進一步提升社區整體醫療服務質素，及令更多心臟病人可以在較短時間內得到適當治療。

In 2012, we opened our new Lithotripsy Center, which offers professional care by experienced urologists and professional medical teams. To raise awareness of disease prevention, our Lifestyle and Management Center and dietitians provide nutrition and lifestyle counseling. This multi-faceted approach provides patients with excellent options to help prevent disease reoccurrence through improved eating and lifestyle choices.

The demand for quality medical services has been steadily increasing with the city’s population growth, and we are meeting this demand with the construction of a new hospital building, planned for completion in early 2015. The spacious new building will have an increased number of beds to 450, as well as a much more overall comfortable environment for patients. We will also be able to accommodate more operating theatres, advanced medical facilities, and to expand specialty areas such as Heart Center, Urology Center, Orthopedic Center, Women Health Center and Surgical Center. Other services, including Family Medicine and Health Assessment, will be upgraded as well.

二零一二年，本院又設立了體外碎石中心，由富經驗的泌尿專科醫生和專業醫護團隊主理，提供專業的診治。同時，為加強預防疾病的意識，健康生活促進中心和營養師還會提供營養和生活指導，通過改善飲食和生活習慣，全面減低復發風險。

隨着人口不斷增加，醫療服務需求愈趨殷切。有見及此，本院正興建新院大樓，預計可於二零一五年初竣工。屆時，床位將增至四百五十張，且可提供更廣闊的空間和舒適的環境，容納各類型先進儀器和設施，增設手術室，擴建各專科中心，如心臟、泌尿科、骨科、婦產科和外科等，同時加強家庭醫學和健康檢查等服務，提升服務質素。
