Padre’s Corner AUGUST 25, 2019 TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Life is a composite of beauty, wonderment, exploration, interpersonal growth, intrigue, mystery, sadness, tragedy, loss and acceptance. A good priest friend of mine, starting with seminary days that commenced in 1987, wrote me: “Something like this is so important, especially the mother of a priest, especially your mother. You said how her death has already affected your thinking. This is all relevant stuff. Once our parents die, it becomes obvious that we’re the next generation, the next to go, the clock is ticking. I think the pain is greater for a priest. Their mother plays a special role. Well, you’re surrounded by a lot of very good people.” Good themes of life in our culture are widely discovered. The rock group “Spanky and Our Gang,” one of my favorites, released “Lazy Day” in 1967. The lyrics in part: “Blue sky, sunshine, what a day to take a walk in the park. Ice cream, day dream, till the sky becomes a blanket of stars. What a day for picking daisies, and lots of red balloons…flowers bloomin’ children sayin’ hello. Row boats, bird notes, people smilin’ ev’rywhere that they go. What a day to be together.” There were recent films released into the cinematic zones, reflecting the goodness of the human heart transcending what is skin deep. “Ugly Dolls” involved rejected toys, because of perceived factory defects, that never make their way into the hands of eager children. Much like the “Island of Misfit Toys” from “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” the film encouraged looking at the human interior side of these toys seeking to be adopted. “The Sun Is Also A Star” examined the legitimate roles of fate, destiny, truth yearnings, and a hungry heart in search for authenticity and commitment in the complex world of human relationships. Pastor Samuel Rodriguez was a co-producer of “Breakthrough,” a recent film about a Christian faith community in St. Louis praying for the life of a teenage boy who nearly drowns in a pond skating accident on the ice. He reflected: “The world is hungry for authenticity, truth and experience. Hollywood has recognized there is a faith community and has decided, why not produce content that transcends that community? It’s beautiful to see people of all creeds, coming together, even nonbelievers, to enjoy this film. Our film is a push back on perpetual discord, strife and politically exacerbated silos that separate us. It says we are one, and when we love together, believe together, and work together, God will respond.” Life’s oddities and mysteries, usually endowed with spiritual underpinnings, was a significant contribution by Robert Ripley. The creator of “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not” was born on December 25, 1890 in Santa Rosa, California (later the homes of Charles “Peanuts” Schulz). He died in Manhattan on May 27, 1949. Ripley traveled the world extensively, writing journals, and collecting human interest items for his later museums. At the Atlantic City, New Jersey location the intrigued visitor like myself can find a locket of hair from first president George Washington, miniature Pan American plane coffin, 1865 Civil War “Bite The Bullet” used by a soldier about to endure painful surgery, picture of Ripley with his one-eyed sheepdog “Cyclops”, life mask of Abraham Lincoln, human hair wreath of the deceased as a funeral home memento, and a coffin allowing someone to be “saved by the bell” on the “graveyard shift” if buried alive. While we certainly enjoy the many wonderful life moments we are each exposed to, both predictable and unexpected, God has built a spiritual mechanism within each of us to ascertain a heavenly search and yearning withstanding our worldly activities. Call to mind these words from Cuthbert, on the death of Saint Bede who was born in 673 England. He became a Benedictine monk and died in 735. When the priests arrived he spoke to them and asked each one to offer Masses and prayers for him regularly. They gladly promised to do so. The priests were sad, however, and they all wept, especially because Bede had said that he thought they would not see his face much longer in this world. Yet they rejoiced when he said: “If it so please my Maker, it is time for me to return to Him who created me and formed me out of nothing when I did not exist. I have lived a long time, and the righteous Judge has taken good care of me during my whole life. The time has come for my departure, and I long to die and be with Christ. My soul yearns to see Christ, my King, in all His glory … And when he had named the Holy Spirit, he breathed his last.” Apostle John: “Have no love for the world, nor the things that the world affords. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love has no place in him, for nothing that the world affords comes from the Father. Corral allurements, enticements for the eye, the life of empty show --- all these are from the world. And the world with its seductions is passing away, but the man who does God’s will endures forever.” (From the first letter of John 2:12-17). Despite the spiritual call for detachment in a worldly sense, like Jesus God has destined us for a certain amount of time to live on planet earth until called back to Him. “A Dog’s Journey,” starring Dennis Quaid, was a rare film that explored these issues for both humanity and the pets we love. TODAY TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Isaiah 66:18-21 Isaiah portrays a time when people from many nations will gather in Jerusalem and proclaim God's glory. God's messengers will teach many nations about God. Just as the Israelites bring offerings, these messengers will bring people from all nations to worship. Second Reading: Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13 The Hebrews are told that God disciplines those he loves. When a parent disciplines a child, the child usually learns what is expected of him. The Hebrews are encouraged to face life's trials as a form of discipline, and attempt to learn something from them. Gospel: Luke 13:22-30 Jesus warns that the door to God's kingdom will be locked for those who ignored his wishes. Many people will come from all nations and take their place in God's kingdom. Others will not be recognized by God, and he will reject them. Monday 1 Thes 1:1-5, 8b-10; Mt 23:13-22 Tuesday 1 Thes 2:1-8; Mt 23:23-26 Wednesday 1 Thes 2:9-13; Mt 23:27-32 Thursday 1 Thes 3:7-13; Mk 6:17-29 Friday 1 Thes 4:1-8; Mt 25:1-13 Saturday 1 Thes 4:9-11; Mt 25:14-30

Padres Corner Cont’d In a rare treat from Hollywood, grandparents are trying to bring wisdom to loved ones in complicated and unstable living situations. A crucifix adorns their bedroom, metaphorically being their font of wisdom strength. The many dogs living and dying in their midst are akin to heavenly inspirations. Jesus would often find solace, peace, and healing in natural settings such as lakes and mountains. He, in a sense, sanctifies each person when they discover similar spots of sacredness. Cooperstown, New York is one such destination for me. I longed often to go there with my parents, but alas it was not in our destiny for this world. My soul reaches out to the area housing artifacts of Babe Ruth including his baseball locker, glove, uniform, awards, bats and even bricks from his father’s saloon in Baltimore, plus the Catholic school he went to. Ruth reflected: “On June 13, 1902, when I was seven years old, my mother and father placed me in St. Mary’s Industrial School in Baltimore, a training school for orphans, incorrigibles, and delinquents. I was listed as incorrigible, and I guess I was. It was at St. Mary’s that I met and learned to love the greatest man I’ve ever known. His name was Matthias. He taught me to read and write – and he taught me the difference between right and wrong. It was Brother Matthias who made me a pitcher. Forty-six years later on June 14, 1948 the Babe penned a brief note to George Weiss (Vice-President of the New York Yankees). The day before Ruth, terminal with throat cancer, appeared for the final time at the Stadium touched me greatly. “It was very unfortunate that we had such miserable weather, but even though the weather was cold and dreary the reception I received warmed my heart and I want to take this opportunity of thanking you for making it possible.” Two months later Ruth was gone, as Cardinal Francis Spellman celebrated the funeral mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral followed by burial in section 25 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne. Tony Gwynn, superstar for the San Diego Padres, died of a similar malady to that of Ruth in 2014. His age was 54. Ruth was 53. Both stories remind me of our mortality. Perhaps this is more on my soul now since the death of my Mother on May 12 (Mother’s Day). As people of faith, we do not see death as horrific reality but liberating entrance to Heaven. The girls thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the Westchester Broadway Theater to see On Your Feet! on July 25. It was a wonderful experience for them and I was so proud of the way they handled themselves at the theater. We received many lovely comments from other patrons about their behavior; a real tribute to the school. Many of you have been supporting this program for the past several years, and your kindness and generosity continue to astound me. I pray that God continue to bless you and keep you in His care. Sincerely, Cathy
