CHIVALRIC STORY IN OLD SERBIAN LITERATURE

    (Summary)

It is interesting fact that in Serbian medieval literature there are no chivalric stories although the

courtly life and social hierarchy, where important part was played by military nobles and foreign mer-

cenaries, provided subject for its development. The testimonies about popularity of the literary form,

despite the attempts of the ofcial church to repress it as a less valuable and even harmful reading for

youth, are the elements of the chivalric codex, typical for west-European romances, in the origi-

nal medieval writings. They are, logically, most evident in the writings taken from the other cultures

adapted for domestic public, courtly nobles who were preparing for the life of medieval feudal nobles

or soldiers. This matter was explicitly discussed: piece of writing like Aleksandrida, abundant with

successful battles of the conquerors, was made for those who were preparing for battles. They were

supposed to learn ght disciplines as well as chivalric behaviour typical for the noblemen. The task of

the literature was to provide the best examples for that.

That literature, apart from didactical one, had its amusing side: that is why, at least in the West,

it has a lot of romantic stories in the forms of conventional chivalric love between a knight and

a lady. In our patriarchal culture the romantic elements are diminished or enveloped with the veil of

    Christian spiritual love.
