2 GENERAL
2.1 PURPOSE OF QOS INDICATORS
An indicator is a value based on one or more observation counters and that is representative either of system performance(BSS) or subscribers point of view. The counters are either assigned to the system itself or to analysers external to thesystem.
The service quality indicators have five major purposes:
Identify occasional faults on a subsystem (BSS, BTS) and establish corrective action (operating instruction orcorrective maintenance) required to restore service quality;
Detect and identify recurrent system faults to define corrective action and/or palliative action;
Detect and identify radio problem on a cell, to help Radio Tuning teams to analyse radio situation and define correctiveaction (new frequency, antenna modification, parameter adjustment...);
Monitor system changes in terms of:
- load- efficiency- traffic model
- gain obtained by a software update or network modification;
Predict network behavior according to traffic evolution (undersizing, overload, etc.).
2.2 TYPES OF QOS INDICATORS
Two main groups of service quality indicators have been identified to meet the above objectives:
Global BSS network surveillance indicators: These are used to indicate the quality of service provided to subscribers
and identify failures and their causes for the entire network and for each BSS. These counters should be managed at theNSS or BSS level, we will discuss here about BSS level only;
Detailed BSS surveillance indicators: they are used to identify the causes of individual failures for each BSS and each
cell. This can be used to isolate local problems in a subsystem (for corrective maintenance purposes), generic failuresdue to a specific software version, or appreciate subsystem loads.

2.3 QUICK OVERVIEW OF DIFFERENCES BETWEEN B8 AND B9
This document deals only with the (E)GPRS service. The GSM-related indicators are described in a dedicated document.
The main differences in GPRS/EGPRS service between B8 and B9 are:

3 GPRS INDICATORS
3.1 INTRODUCTION
3.1.1 OMC-R COUNTERS RETRIEVAL
3.1.1.1 GPRS Counter types
GPRS indicators are established from performance counters provided by the MFS (GPRS node in the BSS).
Counters are organized into the following types:
- The X721 COUNTER, which is a management abstraction of an underlying counting process (eg number of Resourceallocations). It cumulates telecom events over a given Granularity period (ie the period at the end of which the counter value
has to be collected for analysis), and is reset at the end of that period. It is expressed in integer.
- the X721 GAUGE, which is a management abstraction of a dynamic variable, such as the number of busy GCHs. Itrepresents an instantaneous state of telecom resources, and is not reset at the end of the Granularity period. The gauge is
updated regularly upon internal polling (named GAUGE-POLLING, eg each 30 sec.) of the observed resource. The internalpolling is an inherent mechanism associated with the gauge. It is expressed in integer.
- the X721 TIDE-MARK, which is a mechanism that records the maximum or minimum value reached by a gauge during agranularity period. It is reset at the end of each Granularity period. It is expressed in integer.
- the AVERAGED GAUGE (Alcatel proprietary), that averages over the granularity period all values of a gauge obtained ateach polling, and is reset at the end of the Granularity period. It is expressed in decimal (one significant value after the
coma).
- the TIMER (Alcatel proprietary) which measures the time of a telecom event or procedure. It is expressed in decimal (onesignificant value after the coma)
3.1.1.2 Measurement Activation at OMC-R
GPRS counters are collected on the OMC after each Granularity Period (GP). No jobs are launched as for GSM counterstypes.

3.1.2 CLASSIFICATION AND NAMING CONVENTIONS
3.1.2.1 Classification
The present chapter defines standard indicators, that can be used to follow behaviour and quality of any kind of GPRSnetworks, equipped with Alcatel BSS in Release B9.
GPRS Indicators can be divided into 3 basic domains:
The Traffic Loaddomain evaluates the GPRS traffic model per interface (radio, BSCGP and Gb interfaces) andper radio channel (AGCH/PAGCH, PCH/PPCH, UL/DL PDTCH, UL/DL PACCH).
The Quality of Service domain evaluates the rate of success or failure per interface (Radio, AterMux, Gb) or
per telecom procedure (TBF UL/DL establishment, UL/DL Data transfer, radio resource allocation or re-allocation).
The Resource Availability and Usage domain evaluates the availability and usage of the resources per interfaceand per GPU. The following resources are identified:
- Abis interface (abis nibbles)- AterMux interface (GCH, LapD)- Gb interface (PVC, Bearer Channel)- GPU object (CPU and DSP usage)

3.1.2.2 Naming conventions
In the following description, the symbol "cell
" means the sum for a subset of cells:
- the cell itself for a cell level indicator- sum of the cells of a BSC for a BSS level indicator
- sum of all cells of network for a network level indicator
3.1.2.3 QOS Description template
GPRS protocol is based on a unilateral connexion between 2 users. Therefore, uplink and downlink transactions must bestudied separately. However, due to the symmetry of both directions indicators within telecom procedures, most oftenGPRS indicators will be described as follows:
INDICATOR Indicators' name
DEFINITION Indicators' definition according to their category
FORMULA DOWNLINK Indicators' computation for downlink procedures
FORMULA UPLINK Indicators' computation for Uplink procedures
THRESHOLD Threshold(s) for acceptable quality (upon this threshold, alert should be triggered)

3.2 TRAFFIC LOAD AND TRAFFIC MODEL INDICATORS
This set of indicators provides users with:
- number of transactions attempts and successes (TBF establishment requests and successes according the radio
access configuration and the MS state)
- traffic computation for a cell (number of established TBF and sessions, transfer direction and throughput)
- load on traffic and signalling channels to evaluate GPRS channels dimensioning
- load and traffic concerning the resource allocation procedure
- traffic on the BSCGP (BSC/MFS), Gb and Abis interfaces.

Notes about control channel load computation:
N1 = average number of mobile identity sent within one PAGING REQUEST message. Its value depends on mobileidentification mode in paging used over the network : by IMSI or TMSI.Typical values are: N1= 3 (IMSI), N1= 1.5 (TMSI).
N2 = maximum number of PCH bursts in one CCCH multiframe: (3 - BS_AGBLK_RES) in combined BCCH mode, (9 -BS_AGBLK_RES) in not combined BCCH mode.
N3 = 3 CCCH blocks in combined BCCH mode, 9 in uncombined BCCH mode
N4 = BS_AGBLK_RES (logical parameter); N is the maximum number of AGCH bursts in one CCCH multiframe: 1 in
combined BCCH mode, 4 in not combined BCCH mode
N5 = maximum number of RACH bursts in one CCCH multiframe: 27 in combined BCCH mode, 51 in not combinedBCCH mode
GP is the number of seconds of the Granularity period (1800 sec for 30 mn)
