1. We use direct object pronouns as substitutes for direct objects in the sentence.

2. Generally, the short forms of the direct object pronouns are used. The long forms of the direct object pronouns are usually used to emphasize the contrast between the two words substituted by the pronouns.

3. We never start a sentence with a short direct object pronoun.

1. HELLO?

• In formal or business situations, when answering the phone, you usually give your name, or the name of your company. At home, you usually just say – Ало? – Hello?

• When answering the phone, Bulgarians very often just say Да, моля? – Yes, please? or Да – Yes? and wait for the person making the call to introduce himself or herself or to say who s/he wants to speak to.

• Phone numbers are pronounced in several ways:

• In Bulgaria, only the caller pays for the outgoing call on a GSM. That’s why people sometimes just “click”– they call and hang up immediately to avoid being charged. This could be a signal agreed on beforehand or it could be interpreted as “please, call me back”.

• When a Bulgarian asks you how you are, it is not just a formality. In response to this question, you may get quite a detailed answer about the person’s health and even family issues.

• Healthcare inBulgaria isprovidedby theNationalHealthInsuranceFund. It iscompulsory for all residents to contribute to this fund. Insured persons are entitled to use the services of medical professionals and healthcare facilities who/which haveconcludedacontractwiththeNationalHealthInsuranceFund.

• In Bulgaria there are many specialized private clinics. In the case of consultations and/ortreatmentinsuchclinics,patientspayfortherespectiveexaminationand/ortreatment, regardless of whether they have medical insurance or not.

• Uninsured persons pay the service fee and the full amount of the medical care received.

• All insured persons choose a general practitioner (GP) with whom they mayconsult as necessary. If the GP selected is not a specialist who has the necessary competence to treat a certain condition, the patient obtains a medical referral to be examinedbyaspecialist.

3. VISITS

• Name days and birthdays are great holidays in Bulgaria. When Bulgarians have a name day, a birthday or if they just have some good news, they usually treat their colleaguestoaboxofchocolates,cookiesorsoftdrinks.

• When you are invited to a birthday party, you are expected to give a birthdaypresent.Usuallyitissomethingofvaluefortheperson.It’sexpectedofthebirthdayperson to treat everyone.

6. HAPPY HOLIDAY

March 1st – Baba Marta

• Честита Баба Марта is how Bulgarians greet each other on this day. They then present each other with мартеница, which are red and white woolen threads that are woven together and symbolize health and happiness for the coming months. Martenitsas are usually pinned to lapels or tied around wrists and worn until the firststorkisseen.Theyshouldthenbetiedonafruittreeorburiedunderastonewhile, at the same time, making a wish.

March 3rd – the Liberation Day

• March 3rd is the most important national holiday of Bulgaria and it is the day when Bulgarians celebrate the liberation of Bulgaria after almost 500 years of Ottoman rule in 1878.

• International Women’s Day is celebrated on the 8th of March every year.

• Started as a celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Russia and the countries of Eastern Europe. In Bulgaria, the day has lost its political meaning, andhasbecomesimplyanoccasionformentoexpresstheirloveandrespecttothewomen around them.

Easter

• Easter in Bulgaria is a highly celebrated holiday. Easter eggs are of great symbolic importance. They represent the beginning of all life. According to tradition the firsteggtobepaintedmustbered.Therestoftheeggscanthenbepaintedinanycolorandoftenawaxcandleisusedtodrawonthem.Theeggbreakingcustomtakes place before the big meal and it involves all the family members tapping their eggs against each other after each person has chosen a colorful egg. The typical Easter bread in Bulgaria is called козунак and it is a sweet bread, sometimes with raisins in it.

10. JOB INTERVIEW

• Non-EU citizens have the right to work in Bulgaria only after a National Employment Agency work permit is issued. Work permits are not required for foreigners with permanent residence status in Bulgaria or those who have been granted asylum or other humanitarian status.

• The Bulgarian Labor Codex distinguishes between two types of employmentcontracts: a Temporary employment contract (срочен трудов договор) and aPermanent employment contract (безсрочен трудов договор).An employmentcontract is only legally valid if it is in writing.

• In Bulgarian law there are no restrictions on foreigners setting up a company in Bulgaria: there are no special requirements such as necessary work permits or residence permits in order to establish a company.

• Unemployment benefits are paid by the National Social Security Institute(Национален осигурителен институт).Applicantsmustfileforbenefitsattheirlocaloffice.

• In order for a person to be eligible for unemployment benefits (обезщетение за безработица) inBulgaria theymust have beenworking andmaking socialinsurance contributions for at least 9 out of the last 15 months.

• Theperiodof timeforwhichanunemployedpersoncanreceivebenefitsvariesaccording to the length of time the applicant worked and made social insurance contributions.

• Eachmonththebenefitforthepreviousmonthistransferreddirectlytotheperson’sbank account.
