    CEBU CHRISTIAN MISSION - P. 0 . BOX 41, CEBU CITY, PHIUPPINES - JULY 1970

    C H U R C H PROPERTYThe provisions of Philippine law make it extremely

difficult for churches with full local autonomy to holdproperty in the name of the church. To do so, eachcongregation must incorporate formally with the Securitiesand Exchange Commission just as though it were abig business. It would be easier if it were denominationally-minded and had a headquarters. The mainproblem' is simply that papers are ignored in moatgovernment offices unless they are hand-carried fromone official to another. This means that somebodymust take it upon himself to do so and spend atleast a week in Manila from each church.

ASIAN INSTITUTE FOR CHURCH GROWTHTh e brethren in this area of the Philippines are

expectantly looking forward at the end of June forthe visit of Conley Silsby, Don DeWelt, and GordonClymer. The schedule for these leaders is for themto serve only in Cebu and Aparri. We feel that themore people that can visit and make some contrilni-tion to the Philippine fellowship f faith the better. We are indebted to all who are supporting this program. These men will also visit Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei,Hong Kong, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Rangoon, Calcutta,Madras, New Delhi, and Kanpur.

INCOMPLETE PROJECTSWe would like to remind you of some needs

    previously presented. They are:

    1. Th e support of Cebu Bible Seminary faculty.

    2. Th e Building Fund of the Cebu City Churchan d the roofing of th e school dormitories.

    3. In addition we wish to suggest that some ofyou might like to have fellowship in the Revival Fires evangelistic effort to be held inCebu City by Joe Carman in April of 1971.Th e churches in this area are cooperating toraise 1,000 dollars for this impressive program.

TH E PESO AND TH E DOLLARThe Philippine peso h s recently been llowed by

the Central Bank to find its true market value on thefree exchange. From four pesos to one dollar it isnow worth six to one. This is a temporary help tous until the increase in prices catches up.

EIGHTY YEARS A CATHOLICEighty-year-old Eulalia Menoza was recently bap

tized with her thirty-year-old neighbor, Mrs. Siaton.Th e old lady can neither read nor write but listenscarefully to chose who read the Scriptures to her.She still carries water herself from the well to washclothes for her son. Her 72-year-old brother isstudying the NT, and she hopes to win him.

BAPTIZING A 90-YEAR-OLD FATHER Y ou can imagine the joy of our dorm matron

when she was able to persuade her 90-year-old fatherto accept Christ. Phis is the way to spend a vacation Mrs. Honoria Sakay (literally; take a ride )has shown us the best answer to the problem ofchurch growth. Each one win one.

    CEBU C HR IS TI AN M IS SI ON - P. O. BO X 41, CEBU C IT Y, P HI LI PP IN ES - NOVEMBER 1970

Man s history concerns itself with the rise andfall of civilizatione. After the A bombs fall, somewherethe old water buffalo will still plod ou t his duty.

In the Philippines there were many uprisings underth e Spani sh rule. It was the old story: Compulsorymilitary service; taxes too heavy to be borne, and imprisonment or depor tat ion with confiscation of propertyfor those who could not pay them; no justice exceptfor those who could afford to buy it; cruel extortion byth e friars in more secluded districts; wives and daughtersruined; th e marriage ceremony too costly a luxuryfor the poor; the dead refused burial without payment of a substantial su m in advance; no opp ortun ityfor education; little inducement to economy, since toacquire wealth meant to become a target for officialsa n d f ri ar a a li ke .

    e n Wor ces te r

Th e work of the Gospel in Cebu was given abig boost when Don DeWelt of Ozark Bible College,Gordon Clymer with Conley Silsby of Puget SoundCollege of the Bible visited the campus of Cebu BibleSeminary. Fil ip ino brethren from far and near werestrengthened by the teaching and fellowship of thesefrom the States. Another group of Americans werewith us for one day on their way to the Australianconvention. There were thirty-two of them under theleadership of Lertis Ellett and his wife They included V r and Mrs. Edwin Hayden, Editor of theChrist ian Standard; Mrs, Wiima Shaffer, Editor, of Christian Mother; and Mr. and Mrs. John Webb, LincolnChristian College.
