A foreword, cause that’s why they call it so, should helpexplain the book it precedes, offering a series ofaccounts, perhaps the paper’s plan, perhaps certaincritical references, etc. This would be nice andundoubtedly useful. I confess that I have no intention ofdoing this though, or not more than telling you that thesixth volume of the igloobest collection dedicated toRomanian houses proposes a selection of 16 projects, each one thoroughly photographed, accompanied byblueprints and its own presentation text. What I would rather observe here is the status of thehouse as a book subject. I imagine everyone hasnoticed that lately the phenomenon of books – theirchoice of subjects – arranged around family criteria hasseriously gained ground. Constructions or cars, anykind of object, from fire guns to laces, baby animals totattoos, etc. etc., practically anything that can amountto a series becomes a book. I think it’s hard to find anyproduct of human creativity that doesn’t have, withsome publisher or another, a dedicated selectionalbum. The phenomenon is probably equally due tothe commercial interest, to a kind of (collectors) maniato systemize and organise an increasingly complexworld, one that is more and more dense in terms offabricated goods. Beyond theory, the fact is that wecan no longer ignore this way of packaging the resultsof human creativity. As the house is one importantproduct to come out of the creation process, it is, isn’tit?, only natural that it has its own family of bookswhere it can be found, pre cooked, ready digested forthe more or less specialized reader. I am glad it is uswho do this in Romania, as I think the existence of alocal selection of domestic architecture is important, dedicated both to specialists and to the less trained, beit even for the immediate use of those looking for inspi-ration, if not for documenting this phenomenon in time.Unfortunately, the offer still scarce of quality subjectsdoes not yet allow for a partition in subclasses (aftermaterials, surfaces and other criteria), but I expect inthe near future we will get there. The question I leave you with (to which I am still to finda satisfying answer) and whose key I invite you to readthis album in, is whether or not the houses havebecome aware of their status of possible stars and ifthis has any kind of influence on their making…

The property is placed on the shores of lake Snagov, caught on a narrow strip of land between the forestand the lake: an exceptional, yet discreet positioning. Given extremely precise specifications and require-ments from the owner, the architects approached theproject with inspiration and simplicity. The startingpoint was the intention to offer that feeling of drifting,of opening up to the lake while also embracing theforest. Thus, the team constantly searched for ways ofexpanding the house through its surroundings, by vo-luntarily integrating these in the inner space. Theground floor contains and favors the reception area, the living room and its “overhanging” terrace, facingan exceptional view of the lake, challenging the struc-tural engineers in order to achieve an 11 m openingof glazing without any pillars or intermediate support. The dining room is placed in front of a glazed facadewith double height, for a full enjoyment of the imme-diate vicinity of the forest. In order to further potenti-ate this vicinity, the interior encompasses an attic wallfully covered in mirrors. The fabrics of the interior decorations were chosenwith great care, consulting the owner, who investedintelligently and generously in this project: nobleRomano Bianco travertine slabs for the ground, Italianparquet, walls clad in finned rosewood and texturedplaster. The kitchen is clad in the solemn Macassarwood. The napage and interior lighting wear the sig-nature of the master glassmakers from the MuranoIsland and of the renowned Catellean & Smith.

Placed in the immediate vicinity of the V`c`re[tiDelta, the I.D. House makes the most out of theopportunities set by the land, turning restrictions intobenefits. With a compact volume, the constructiondisplays a wide opening towards the park, through agenerous glazed surface at the loft level, along with aterrace punctuating the volume. This glazing createsa dialogue with the surroundings, providing light andspaciousness to an otherwise small interior. Anotherelement of aperture is the skylight, which besidesoffering a perspective on the city, contributes to thenatural lighting of the loft. On the street side, the vo-lume is more enclosed, the cantilever defining a co-vered space that marks and protects the access to thehouse. The building envelope is built in a “double-skin” system, with folded plate, playing part in the na-tural ventilation of the façade during summertime andmaintaining a hot air bed between the inner and theouter skin during winter. On the interior, the naturalventilation is provided by the staircase, which can beopened at the loft. The configuration of functionsmanaged to maximize the given space, obtaininggenerous surfaces on an otherwise small lot. Thus, the ground floor, with a built surface of 85 sqm, con-tains the daytime area, with the access hallway, thekitchen, the dining and living room, and the lavatory. At the first floor, a surface of 105 sqm is organized tohost the master bedroom, with the adjacent dressingroom and bathroom, and two children bedrooms, with a common bath. The loft is designed as a flexiblespace, a leisure room that can be turned into a guestbedroom, while the basement is comprised of a tech-nical room and a storage area.

Placed in a residential area adjacent to the capital city, witha low density of construction and a low height regime, thishouse benefits from the advantage of no volumetric or sty-listic constraints that would otherwise be customary in amore coagulated urban tissue. The construction is distinguished through a simple, geo-metrical volume, developed solely on the ground level. Theconstruction’s core is the living room, at the same time itshighest point, developed on the ridge of the framing andleaving its structural elements exposed. This placement at the city edge also allowed for a reinter-pretation of a series of features of traditional housing. Thus, within the access area, the link between the outside and theinside is ensured by a contemporary version of the verna-cular porch establishing a balanced dialogue with the clear, rigorous lines of the landscaped garden. Another elementembraced from the traditional repertoire is the wide eaves, rounding out the appearance of calmness, suggesting pro-tection and harmony. On the other side, the wide glazingmarks the opening towards the garden without affecting theintimacy of those inside. At the same time, the presence ofglass, as well as the metallic grid that protects the open-airplayground establishes a pleasant contrast with the naturalshades of the wood and the green dominating the garden.

The building meets the beneficiaries’ passion for theMediterranean style by rearranging its elements in amodern language – the rightness, bright light, sun-shades, shutters, white paint, natural stone, woodessence and the fixed furniture. The fixed furniturewhose panels reiterate the image of traditional shut-ters becomes a separation wall between rooms, access doors or the visiting grid. The wood is mount-ed at the ceiling level, in the soffits of the day areasand the access hallway, where alongside the whitemetallic beams, it gives the stair head a light appear-ance. The ceilings on the upper floor are finished withwallpaper in natural colours. The monochrome cur-tains highlight the traditional models of the carpets. The ladder, with a metallic structure and free steps, invites the zenithal light into the ground floor, whilethe marginal glazing of the double-sided furniturebetween the living room and the hallway brings natu-ral light into the day area. The living room and kitchenare punctuated by spectacular fire and water accents:the double-faced fireplace and the three metre longaquarium mounted on the dining room wall. The tablemade of a centennial door leaf and the vintage chairsare emphasized by the design’s modern elements. The wood textures in different hues and ages highli -ght the authenticity of the interiors and lend depth tothe design. The stone-fini-shing wall of the day areago es on to the exterior, visually sheltering the pool. The horizontal holes in its surface make room for theplanters of climbing plants and for the cascades play-ing an aesthetic and practical role in hydro massage. The pool terrace encircles the roots of the tall walnuttree saved by the beneficiaries as a symbol of the spo -n taneous nature specific to Mediterranean gardens.

The building is developed in an hourglass shape, withthe free stepped stairs and the glazed elevator at itscenter, which bring light to the very core of the house. The hollow shape of the side facades creates two irre -gu lar inner yards that connect both sides of the house. The midlevel floors define a tridimensional open-spa -ce. The exposed structure of the oblique-cofferedcon crete beams extends into the main facade’s ter-race through a network of metallic beams, while theperforated steel plates support a series of shrub potsand become vertical pergolas for the ivy planted onthe ground floor. The exposed concrete ceilings re -quire the use of intelligent heating systems, with radi-ating panels within walls, floor heating, a heat pumpunit and solar panels. The building management sys-tem, the LED lighting and the oversized thermal insu-lation efficiently handle the energy consumption of thebuilding. The cardinal direction and the proportionbetween the full and the hollow ensure the naturallight requisite, all the while offering the much-neededshelter from excessive sunlight. The curtain of vegeta-tion between the building and the street shades therooms of the main facade and integrates the buildingwithin its built environment, distinguished by thewealth of free vegetation. The interior design places itsstake on spectacular raw materials prioritized on theirdifferent positions towards the source of natural light. The designer products supplement the range of mate-rials with vibrant textures and minimalist shapes.

Interiorul, organizat pe treinivele, încurajeaz` o utilizare natural` [i facil` a spa -]iilor. Mobilierul, fini sa -jele [i culorile subliniaz` aplecarea c`tre minimalism.
On the bank of lake Grivi]a, a white, compact andslender volume, smartly cut, easily stands out in itsnatural surroundings, granting panoramic views andgenerating enlightened tracks. Yet the generous sitealso brought about a series of urban constraints thatled to a vertical development of the project. This con-text resulted in the differential treatment of thefacades. On the side facing the easement road thatborders a flank of the land, the choice went for a fullfacade, one that would grant the inhabitants a senseof intimacy. The facade facing the inner yard, with thepool, has been opened up through ample cuts thatenable the construction to breathe. The interior, organised on three levels, encourages anatural and easy use of the space. While the groundfloor is dedicated to daytime activities, the first floorhosts the bedrooms and the second floor is assignedto a working space and hobby studio. On each ofthese levels, an adjoining terrace successfully com-pletes the geometry and offers different perspectiveson the lake. The key element of the house is the spec-tacular stairway below the luminary, which openlycrosses each level with an elegant profile. The furni-ture, finishing materials and colours highlight a biastowards minimalism. With the use of light and ethere-al colours – white and shades of beige – the house isbuilt in a purely Mediterranean spirit. Opaque sur-faces blend with polished ones, lending the interiordesign a dynamic and vibrant appearance. The upperfloor, possibly the most impressive one, is illuminatedthrough a series of circular cut-outs, in stark contrastwith the prevailing right angles.

The home’s young beneficiaries wished to live in anurban environment, but retain the advantages offeredby a house - a garden and a direct connection to theoutside, as well as a greater flexibility in dividing theinteriors. Determined, when the opportunity arose, they bought a house with a basement, ground floorand a first floor, with a footprint of merely 38 sqm anda yard of 100 sqm, built in the ‘40s in a residentialarea with many similar buildings. After the consolida-tion works and the replacement of installations, themain volume was clad in white polished metal, andthe simple, geometric composition was highlightedthrough a series of black framings that stand out onthe facade. As a counterpoint, the two access vo-lumes to the terrace are coated in iroko wood, sug-gesting the connection between nature and the stateof relaxation. Between these two lies the inner space, connected through a balanced staircase, with floatingsteps and a minimalist metallic handrail that high-lights, through indirect lighting, the central element ofexposed concrete. A modern kitchen, designed in acold-warm contrast, and a more technical space arelocated in the demi basement, while at the upper floorlays the living room – an elegant and comfortablespace. The plan of the second floor has been solvedin a rather special formula: since the initial space didn’t allow for a bigger shower, the latter was even-tually placed in the bedroom and adorned creatively. The furniture, built in a rather restrained chromaticregister, with a series of well-placed accents, wasentirely designed by the team of architects and cus-tom made, completing the image.

Placed on the banks of the Danube, in Or[ova, thishouse emerges as an important landmark in thearchitectural landscape of the area. With a volumetriccomposition and an innovative inner geometry ofspace, the project meets both the constraints of thesite and the specific requirements of the beneficiary. With a ground floor placed in the underground, theconstruction’s cornice reaches a height of fewer than8m compared to the natural terrain’s quota, whichproduces a minimum impact on the environment andlends a more intimate feel to the private areas. Thusthe four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom anddressing, along with the wine cellar, are located onthe buried ground floor. The first floor, on the otherhand, is comprised of the house’s public spaces, namely the spectacularly grand living room (172sqm) and the kitchen. However, not only the upstairsrooms enjoy great views: the wide declivity of the ter-rain uncovers the volume’s ground floor, facing thewater surface, and thus unfolds new perspectives onthe landscape. The two parallel wings are connectedthrough a linking volume, opening on the sidestowards two inner yards, a solution that enables thenatural lighting of the whole ground floor. The house’ssculptural shape and the game of textures on the fini-shing materials led to a more discreet approach of thesecondary building wing, designed as the administra-tor’s residence. This is, in turn, buried throughembankments of grassy terrain, while the apparentfacade is fully plated with the same stone found onthe ground floor areas of the main building.

This project’s premises were the placement in a pro-tected area and the beneficiary’s desire to enjoy asheltered and intimate house, while still firmly ground-ed in the urban lifestyle. The solution offered by theteam of architects meets these requirements with alot of creativity and coherence, taking full advantageof the site’s configuration. Thus, the geometry andland orientation, with an elongated Northern side, facilitated the shaping of an inner yard, which not onlyenables the natural lighting of the house but also con-nects all the spaces and meets the need for refugefrom the urban congestion. On the other hand, inorder not to completely lose the connection to itsvicinities, the building’s last level, where the office andthe lobby are fitted with wide glazing and the terracehas a significant size, ensures a 270° panorama onwhat Bucharest has best to offer: a landscape blend-ing rooftops, tree crowns, gardens and remnants oforchards. The quality of the interior environment, an importantobjective of the project, is due foremost to the directlink between the inner yard and the indoor spaces.Arranged around the yard, the living room, kitchen, hallways, a few bedrooms and baths, all enjoy thedaylight that penetrates the completely glazedfacades and implicitly a permanent connection to theoutdoor. The project doesn’t look for the spectacularat all costs, but aims to understand the nature of theplace it inhabits and thus tries to answer the client’srequirements in a way that doesn’t interfere withwhatever is left of the authenticity of the neighbour-hood.

An example of contemporary architecture perfectlyfitted in the angle of the scenery, the Hajdó houseoffers practical and imaginative solutions for a slope, incorporating the body of the house in the terrain’sangle. Placed on the Northern flank, offering a viewon the city below and the mountains ahead, the blue-print of the house is organized around the terrace, which has a South-Eastern orientation, following thepattern of the traditional household organized aroundthe yard. Both the exterior and the inner terraces, as well as thecommon spaces on the interior, closely follow thetopography and the land orientation, while the inti-mate spaces and annexes are delimited through par-tition walls and a setting that breaks the rhythm of theslope, in cantilever. The living room and kitchen opentowards the terrace through a wide glazing, partiallyshaded during the summer and enjoying a conside -rable thermal input during winter, through high qua-lity insulation. The exterior terrace and the immediatevicinities come as a continuation of the daily trajecto-ry, rending fluidity to movement and to the relationbetween the inside and out. In the same line of spacecontinuity emerges the green roof, also on a slope, closely reflecting the topography of the land. Allmaterials are locally sourced, bringing an addedcoherency to the sustainable approach highlighted bythe green roof. Relying on a juxtaposition of wood andnatural stone on the facade, the chromatic closely fol-lows neutral shades, contributing to the very integra-tion of the construction in the landscape.

Placed in Bu[teni, at the foot of the Caraiman massif, this two storey house rejoices in the spectacle of thearea’s natural landscape, which engages it in an ele-gant and dynamic dialogue. Thus, the construction isdefined by an irregular plan, moulded around theland’s shape and by a slim, energetic volume in fullagreement with the surroundings, capturing the spec-tacular perspectives offered by these. The building itself is situated on the southern side ofthe lot. The three main volumes are aligned to itssouthern, eastern and north-eastern sides, maintain-ing a withdrawal of at least 3 m from the property limits and making room for a covered parking spacefor three cars. The access area is marked by a windfang reinterpre -ted in a contemporary key. The ground floor containsthe day areas – the living room and dining room withan open kitchen, a series of technical and storageareas, for example the pantry and the space accom-modating the boiler, as well as a jacuzzi, with theadjacent shower and lavatories. A generous terrace, with a panoramic view, completes the day area. The first floor hosts the night time spaces – three bedrooms, each with its own bath, one of them witha terrace access, while the second floor is dedicatedto sports and leisure activities. The volume that houses the pool is oriented like aperiscope towards the Caraiman massif, thus offeringa modern and elegant touch to one of the definingstructures in the area – The Cross of the Heroes.

As the house is one notable product to come out of the creative process, it is only natural that it has its own familyof books where it can be found, pre cooked, readily digested. We are glad to be doing this in Romania, as we findthe existence of a local selection of domestic architecture important, dedicated both to specialists and to the lesstrained, be it even for the immediate use of those looking for inspiration, if not for documenting this phenomenonin time. Thus, the sixth volume of the igloobest collection dedicated to Romanian houses proposes 16 projects, each one thoroughly photographed, accompanied by blueprints and its own presentation text.
