Marius is werksaam by Northern Sekuriteit.

ACTING mayor of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality councillor Lucy Ncha handed over the fi nancial vouchers to the Khumalo’s family at Karibu Lodge on Friday.

This came after the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Gugile Nkwiti approved R3.4 million payments to the Khumalo family as compensation for the lost rights in land. Each of the 21 households in the Khumalo family received R162 493, 87.

The Khumalo family had occupied the land at Mohlaba’s location presently Khujwane Village in the 19th century prior to dispossession. According to Rural Development and Land Reform, the family lodged a claim on the basis of benefi cial occupation rights because they lived on the land for more than ten years after 1913 until they were removed in 1964.

The family was dispossessed of its rights due to the racially discriminatory laws endorsed by the apartheid government.

“I wrote to land claim in 1998 and it marks 18 years this year. What we are going to get here today should not divide us, but unite us. I would like to thank the committee I worked

with. For this day to happen we wentthrough a lot. I don’t want any

compensation for the effort I put in for us to fi nally receive this money. All I would like to see is the family using the money wisely, starting businesses, upgrading their lives. Please make sure you use the money responsibly” said Professor Khumalo, a family representative.

Moses Khumalo and his biological brother, Professor Khumalo lodged a land claim with the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights in the capacity as descendants of the Khumalo family. The claim was lodged in 1998 on behalf of the family.

The total extent of the land is 10445 hectares, however part of the land where the family lost their rights was surveyed by the surveyor general and it is on 97 hectares.

“I stand with pride to celebrate with the Khumalo family as they get what is rightfully theirs. As a municipality we say go and unite, let this bring unity among the Khumalo’s. Do not let money make you greedy. Spend your money wisely and I would like to congratulate you for this compensation you received today” said Ncha.

WORLD Cancer Day took place on February 4 with the tag line “Not beyond us”.

Local resident, Britt Dando (40), was diagnosed with breast cancer on September 23 last year and some of her friends thought it was ‘not beyond them’ to shave their hair in support of Britt who, as a result of chemotherapy, lost her hair. Britt offered heartfelt thanks to her friends: “Thank you! I will never forget what you did - a very brave thing which helped my daughter feel like her mom was not the only one to have no hair!”

The support and encouragement from her friends and family were an important part of helping Britt to stay strong during this period. “I want to thank my friends and family for providing more than I ever expected to support me - for the meals, the “What’s app” giggles during each chemo session and for the many prayers. Unfortunately I cannot mention each name individually as the list is too long. I am particularly thankful to Dr. Gary Middleton for ensuring that a surgeon take a further look at the lump in my breast

and to Dr. Gert van der Merwe for his caring professionalism. I also want to say a big thank you to Yasmeen Moosa and the Tzaneen Care Group, who provide a wonderful support base of friendship and care to all cancer patients.

Finally, I want to thank my husband Chris Dando, daughter Isabella Dando and son Nicholas Dando for the love and laughs - even if I do look ‘alien’!”

Statistics show that approximately 6 000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in South Africa.

According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), breast cancer is the second most prevalent form of cancer among South African women and one in 35 women will be diagnosed with the cancer in their lifetime. Tzaneen recently lost another local to cancer.

Willette Engelbrecht sadly passed away in late January after a long and tough battle against the disease. Britt urges all women to regularly check their breasts and go for pap smears.

SAMAC symposium to be heldTHE SA Macadamia Growers Association (SAMAC) expects to increase their global exposure as they host the seventh international macadamia symposium at Skukuza in the Kruger National Park from August 11-13.

There is already keen interest from role players in the macadamia value chain from around the world from growers to importers and exporters to retailers.

span-aktiwiteite.

Skakel Udette Kruger by 083 338-7868 na 14:00.

18 LETABA HERALD Friday March 6, 2015SCHOOL NEWS

DEPARTMENT of Education in Limpopo held the District Excellence Awards for the Mopani District at Tzaneen Country Lodge on Friday.

The main aim of the awards is to honour learners, teachers as well as schools who performed very well for the year 2014. Circuits’ managers, principals from various schools, as well as teachers in all fi ve municipalities within the Mopani District attended the event.

The awards had categories for top three best learners, best teachers in various subjects, most improved schools, best independent schools etc. the offi ce of the district senior manager introduced an award which will rotate from school to school annually. The award will target a fi rst performing school, recording more than 30% of bachelors, performing all subjects with level 3 and above. The award was won by Mohau Secondary School from Letaba Circuit.

St George College, Cata Secondary School, Mopje Secondary School, Helmeg Academy, Hoërskool Ben Vorster and Hoërskool Merensky were the fi ve schools around

Tzaneen that obtained various awards from best performing schools, schools with most bachelors etc.

“Mopani and Sekhukhune Districts were the two worst performing districts in Limpopo Province. Through such initiatives we are now number two in the province and we thank God for such improvement. This year we are aiming for number one” said Acting Executive Mayor of Mopani District councillor Baloyi. She further emphasized that all the 54 worst performing schools in the district for 2014 will have to improve this year. The event was sponsored by Amos Vuma Foundation, Hyundai and Old Mutual.

“Mopani is moving from where it was in 2009. We would like to thank the former executive mayor, the current executive mayor and all various stake holders for their efforts put in to improve the district performance. We have 199 good performing schools and they have done us proud as a province. As in the book titled the Animal Farm, there are better animals than others. Improvement is needed in some schools, it is only the grave that doesn’t move” said Dr Lydia Mafenya, District Senior Manager.

Plasie hockey girls play first matches of the season

HOCKEY GIRLS: Merensky’s girls just before their game at Musina on Saturday.

A couple of Merensky’s girls hockey teams travelled to Musina to meet with opponents from Eric Louw High School on Saturday February 28.

All the teams started off very well, claiming victory in all of their matches.

The under 16 girls triumphed with a good score of 7-0.

Clariska Venter scored two goals, while Noko Mabilu, Hayley Stephenson, Diane

Wiggel, Corli van der Merwe and Delean O’Neill each scored one.

The fi rst hockey team raised the bar when they concluded the game with 11-0, proving that they are more than ready for the season.

Four goals were scored by Juané Fernandes, three by Xané du Toit with Pat Madelane and Lilly Pohl each scoring two.

3D ARCHERY takes place on a range set out in a natural hunting environment, such as a game farm or nature reserve.

The competition takes place in a day. The range comprises 22 butts set out at various distances between 10 yards and 60 yards. Archers shoot from pegs in the ground, and have to estimate the distance. There are 11 x 2D targets and 11 x3D targets. 2D targets are large colour photographs with “kill” and “wound” areas marked, 10 points are scored for a kill and 8 points for a wound, a hit on the rest of the animal counts 5 points. 3D targets are rubber moulded animals near life-size, also with marked scoring areas.

The whole distance of the range varies between 1km and 4kms. Archers have to walk to each target to shoot their 2 arrows, pull, score and move on to the next target. Participants are grouped together in groups averaging 4 archers that walk and shoot together. The groups consist of a group leader, 2 scorers and one arrow puller. The average time to fi nish a 3D round is 6 hours. 16 Merensky archers participated in 10 different Styles at two different Championships during

this weekend. On Saturday February 28 at the Tshwane

Championship Merensky archers won seven of the ten styles they participated in, gold medals were awarded to Mr Ockert le Roux (VMBU), Renart Botha (JMFU), Canell Jackson (CFBU), Janco Theron (JMBU), Marietjie Harmse (AFBU), Ricus Warmenhoven (YAMFU) and Carissa Ivy (JFBU). The group also won two Silver medals Beneche Jackson (JFFU) and Mrs Yolandi Potgieter (AFBU) and two bronze medals for Pieter vd Merwe (JFBU) and Regert vd Merwe (CMBU).

This was not the end of this groups winning streak for the weekend and they went on to win another eleven medals on Sunday 1 March, during the North Gauteng 3D Championships. 22 LETABA HERALD Friday March 6, 2015SCHOOL/SPORT

Daar was vyf deelnemers in klas-B.
