Glaucoma affects over 96,000 patients, and around 14% of them will eventually lose their sight to the disease – making glaucoma the leading cause of blindness in Hong Kong. In recent years, more and more young people have been diagnosed with the disease – and William Ng was one of them. William was first diagnosed with glaucoma at the age of 18. Despite medical treatment, his condition remained unstable. Due to the damage to his sensory cells, he gradually lost the ability to see colours and could only distinguish between light and dark. At 26, William lost his eyesight completely and his world was forever sealed in darkness. “It was a huge blow. I used to work in IT - but after losing my sight, all my dreams and hopes vanished,” explained William. He locked himself up at home and spent two years living in isolation. William continued, “I didn’t want to talk to anybody. I even lied to my friends that I was working in the Mainland. Why bother leaving the front door when I had difficulty even finding the lift button?” William’s depressed mental state worried his family. However, his family found hope after William’s sister discovered the services provided by the Hong Kong Federation of the Blind. At the centre, William learned how to use his other senses to adapt to daily life. He learned how to cook safely and use electrical appliances, as well as other domestic skills. Step by step, William began to venture out of his flat. After a few months of training, his family was thrilled to learn that he travelled from his home in Kowloon to visit friends on Hong Kong Island – all by himself. The Hong Kong Federation of the Blind offers a variety of interest classes, training programmes and public performance opportunities to help visually impaired people realise their potential. With his family’s support, William took up distance running and finished a half-marathon race with his running guide. Through his training, he regained his confidence. Today, William has come a long way from his initial reluctance to accept blindness and defeated attitude. He is now able to go out on his own, run, play golf, enter singing competitions, and has even started working again as an IT technician. Relying on his personal determination and the support of his family, William has triumphed over the challenges of visual impairment to become an active, contributing member of society.
