A NUESTROS LECTORES

TOOUR R EADERS
This web proyecto-orunmila.org has been conceived to satisfy the growingnecessity for information on the “Lucumí” culture in Cuba which is, at the sametime, originally from the Sud-Saharian area in Africa. Much evidence of thisculture is also reflected in the written documents which we introduce as primary sources.
These sources have been written by African descendants and believers of theirreligion in Cuba and collected for over thirty years in Regla and Guanabacoa,(two towns located in the eastern coast of the Bay of Havana in the capital of Cuba) by members of “Proyecto Orunmila” Historical-Anthropological ResearchTeam. This research team is made up by religious personnel with high expertisein those scientific specialties related to the religious profile and particularly, tothe study of the African -Lucumí contribution to the Cuban Culture. “Proyecto
Orunmila” Historical-Anthropological Research Team is a part of the Ilé Osha Adé Yerí which is a temple-house in the Osha-Ifá religion.
In other contexts this African derived Cuban religion that we have documentedfor over 30 years is also known as “Religión Lucumí”; “Regla de Osha”, “Reglade Ifà”; “Religión de los Orishas” or “Santería”. We refer to it as “La religión deOsha-Ifá (Osha-Ifá Religion or simply “Osha-Ifá”).
Both Ilé Osha and Ilé Ifá are essential cells in Osha-Ifá and constitute atraditional religious institution within Cuban culture. These religious cells havetheir own descendants or families which we know and recognize as “religiousbranches” (ramas religosas or just “ramas”).
Osha-Ifá is highly complex and manifold in its own expression. We know thereis still a lot to be collected, and we also know that there can be other documentson the same matter. It is very clear to us that all the valuable varieties of topics within this religion, and the procedures followed by each “branch” at a givenceremony, is of such a particular profile that it becomes almost impossible tocollect them all. This is the internal dynamics of Osha-Ifá.
“Proyecto Orunmila” Historical-Anthropological Research Team hassystematically been collecting documents which reflect the written tradition of the cultural inheritance of those African men and women brought forcibly toCuba during the shameful slave trade. This research started back in 1972 andhas endured all these years up to now in Regla and Guanabacoa townships, points of slave disembarkment and trade in such period of our history. Regla andGuanabacoa townships, from a cultural, religious and socio-economic point of view, comprise a relatively homogeneous area in Cuba.
Let us recall that the natural existence of Osha-Ifá is based on the templehouses(Ilé Osha-Ilé Ifá) and their descendant religious branches which preserve theancient wisdom and richness of Osha-Ifá. Both the templehouses and thereligious branches are the natural basic social frames of this Cuban religion.

“Proyecto Orunmila” Historical-Anthropological Research Team seeks forthese objectives in their research:
1- To rescue and to preserve documents related to the oracle system(Ifá, Dilogún, Biange y Aditoto); to the pantheon of their Orishas
(deities); to the ceremonies, rites and powers of Osha-Ifá, and to theirreligion in general. These documents were written and worded by African descendants of Yoruba culture stemed from the westSud-saharian region.
2- To process those documents to make them readable and usable by Osha-Ifá believers as religious reference and also to facilitate the work of scientific researchers such as specialists in religion, historians, ethnologists, anthropologists, sociologists, ethnolinguists, ethno-biologists and people interested in the knowledge and wisdom of the
African legacy and their descendants in the New World.
3- To make public and spread these unvaluable primary sources to know the African cultural inheritance in Cuba which, at present, is expandingdynamically to other regions of the world.
As we all know, Osha-Ifá is a very active religious system with no administrativebounderies nor cultural limits. Consequently, analyzing the texts based upon thetime they were written was no problem. However, determining where such
documents were written became much more complex since we found andcollected documents in Regla and Guanabacoa townships which were linked toothers existing in territories different from Regla and Guanabacoa. This is dueto the fact that Osha-Ifá families move in and out of places just like any otherfamilies in Cuba. This event is to be taken into consideration to understand any process which may happen between what was collected in the territories studiedand what is working in regions like Habana Vieja, Centro Habana, Marianao andothers.
Osha-Ifá is a prolific and alive religious organism. There are variants and evendifferent understandings of the various aspects of the religion. This fact can bedue to the various social and cultural factors present on our island. And also dueto a wide variety of ethnic components of the Yoruba culture present in Cuba which contributed to the historical and cultural processes bound up to Osha-Ifá.It is well known that elements of other cultures, ethnic groups and assortedreligious visions gathered in Cuba. Each of them contributed with their cultureand religiosity to build up our Nation. At the same time, they influenced eachother in such way that we can easily find the mingled tendencies accepted by most of them along with areas where there are particular variants used by others.

In the ethnogenesis of the formation of the Cuban Nation there have been andstill there are these fusions of cultural elements that have their owncharacteristics. For all that has been said before, we are certain that Osha-Ifá, asit is in Cuba, is also a Cuban religion with evident African derived elements.
Each and every document “Proyecto Orunmila” Historical-AnthropologicalResearch Team has collected during all these years and that come from areligious field, have been fully placed in time, space and subjects that providedthem. “Proyecto Orunmila” Historical-Anthropological Research Team has madegreat efforts to historically trace the circulation of such documents amongOsha-Ifá families.
The process of authenticating each collected document has forced us to use various copies of the same topic gathered at different temple-house fromdifferent priests. At the same time, each piece of paper with valuable information
has been carefully analyzed and discussed with priests with great expertise inOsha-Ifá. Then, from the compared documents, we selected those that work thebest way possible for the majority of believers. The great collection of primary historical-anthropological sources known as “Documentos para la Historia y laCultura de Oshá-Ifá en Cuba” (Documents for the History and Culture of Osha-Ifá in Cuba) is the scientific and religious result of this selective processmentioned above.
You may like to have these sources or read them on line at
www.proyectoorunmila. org at a very reasonable cost. These sources wouldgreatly help you understand, enlarge and deepen your knowledges on theOsha-Ifá religion.
Proyecto-orunmila.org web site is a part of the self-financing system “ProyectoOrunmila” Historical-Anthropological Research Team has adopted to survive andcontinue with this research. Your contribution by acquiring or reading ourdocuments will greatly help “Proyecto Orunmila” in our project of rescuing andprocessing all the information we may find in our search for the best functional
values of Osha-Ifá in Cuba. And as a result of such quest, the primary sourcesknown as “Documents for the History and Culture of Osha-Ifá in Cuba” wouldcontinually increase in its amount of information and validity within thereligious system as it works in Cuba.
This effort will make possible the availability of remarkable primary sources tokeep believers and users well informed on the different religious expressionsconnected to Osha-Ifá.
All these documents preserve texts in their original concept and present eachparticular expression in the age-old tradition. This fact guarantees ethic andreligious purity.

We, “Proyecto Orunmila”, keep safe all original documents or the photocopiesof each and every collected document used in this compilation.
“Proyecto Orunmila” probably possesses the biggest and best scientifically organized and religiously founded archives ever grouped in Cuba.
Both the religious and scientific communities recognize and contribute to theever growing prestige of “Proyecto Orunmila” Historical-AnthropologicalResearch Team for the serious treatment given to all the archived material andfor the respect with which we approach any scientific or religious analysis.
Herein “Proyecto Orunmila” certifies that each and every single document is indaily religious use now and this has been happening for many years. Osha-Ifápriests in Regla and Guanabacoa are the carriers of such treasure and wisdom. They use these documents.
Unavoidably, and due to the complexity of the information processingprocedures, there could be a small group of misprints which will be deleted indue time.
“Proyecto Orunmila” Historical-Anthropological Research Team would gladly answer any questions and would also be pleased to receive any suggestions orideas coming from our readers and/or Osha-Ifá believers and followers.
