Merchandising is a vital func-tion in an apparel export orga-nization. This programme isaimed at helping the currentmerchandisers / fresher aspi-rants to get a new perspectivetowards managing this chal-lenging position in a turbu-lent and often unpredictableenvironment.

Merchandising has beento a large extent a functionwhich was never clearlyde ned not distinctly per-formed in the Indian Apparelexport industry of old. Onone hand the merchandiserhad the job of getting orders

and had to execute them;donning the role of produc-tion coordinator in the samebreath, whilst for others thejob was only follow up of thecon rmed orders.

The merchandisers hadoften been used as glori edclerks with the job focusingon passing the informationreceived from one source toanother without any valueaddition to it.

    In the burgeoning market

of apparel exports 80s, Mer-chandising function was of-ten assigned to fresh graduat-ed of any discipline who werecapable of responding to thequeries of the customers inthe English language. No oth-er quali cation was largelysought from them as the workwas primarily decentralizedand the merchants neededlittle technical knowledge. But the dependency on the
