時々、私は日本が島国という事実をよく忘れます。私の好き

な色は青であり、海鮮には目がありませんが、日本の山にい

つも魅力を感じて、サーフィンのレッスンよりも登山の機会

を求めていました。山に対する好奇心は、アメリカで経験した２回の夏期音楽キャンプで生まれました。

合宿先だったブルーリッジ・マウンテンズはアパラチア山脈の一部であり、ブルーリッジ・パークウェ

イ、ブルーグラス、クロッグダンス、チェロキー族、ビルトモア・エステート、アンディ・グリフィス、

トーマス・ウルフなど、アメリカで最も重要な文化遺産の地であります。アパラチアでの時間は、アメ

リカならではの視野、価値観を自分のものにするきっかけになったため、今も私にとってとても大事な

思い出として心に残っています。その上に、私は泳げません！恥ずかしいことに、ここ４年間宮崎で滞

在しながら、日向灘沿いのビーチをまだ一回も泳いだことがありません。水着を着て海に足をつけたの

は、去年の１２月が初めてで、しかもインドのゴアでした。でも、話がそれてしまいますので、その話

はここまでにしましょう。

Sometimes I forget that Japan is an island nation. I like the color blue, and my penchant for seafood is

second to none, but I have always been drawn to Japanese mountains and opted for hiking opportunities

rather than surfing lessons. Part of my fascination with mountains is attributed to the two summers I

spent with fellow musicians in the Blue Ridge Mountains, a part of the Appalachian Mountains that is

home to some of the most important American cultural heritages—the Blue Ridge Parkway, bluegrass and

clogging, the Cherokees, Biltmore Estate, Andy Griffith and Thomas Wolfe, to name a few. My time in the

Appalachia was crucial to internalizing Americanness and therefore holds a special place in my heart to

date. Also, I don’t know how to swim! I am ashamed to say that in my four years in Miyazaki, I have not

yet tried swimming any of the beaches along the Hyuganada Sea. The first time to I dipped my feet into

the ocean while wearing a swimsuit was only last December in Goa, India! But I digress.

霧島連山を訪れる度に、愛しいノースカロライナのアパラチアを思い出します。同じ年（１９３４年）

に国立公園に指定されたことは単なる偶然ではないかもしれません。宮崎の山も現地の人々にとって暮

らしや霊感の源であり、良質の杉や米から話題の西諸弁、神楽、ユーモア溢れる田の神まで、独特な地

域経済や文化を生み出しました。しかし、霧島とアパラチアには主な違いが一つあり、それはアパラチ

アにはない鉄道が霧島にはあるということです。ここ１００年間、JR 吉都線は奥の深い山間部を通り抜

けて、小林、高原、えびの、そして都城を鹿児島や宮崎県の他市町村に繋いでくれました。

ということで、５月から７月まで吉都線に乗って、好奇心に満ちた観光客の気分で吉都線沿いの色々な

場所を探検しました。そして、ここ４年間の思い出を振り返りながらこのレポートを作成しました。

Every time I visit the Kirishima Mountains, I am reminded of the

Appalachia in my beloved North Carolina. It may not be pure

coincidence that they were both designated as national parks in the

same year (1934). Mountains in Miyazaki too have been an

important source of livelihood and inspiration that gave rise to

distinctive local economy and cultures, ranging from quality cedars

and rice to the sensationalized Nishimoro dialect and kagura dances

and humorous tanokami statues. However, there is one notable

difference between the two: the availability of rail transportation.

For more than 100 years, the JR Kitto Line has been in service

through the seemingly impenetrable mountainous communities,

connecting four major towns of Kobayashi, Takaharu, Ebino, and

Miyakonojo with equally quaint neighboring communities in

Kagoshima and the rest of Miyazaki prefecture. From the month of

May through July, I headed west to explore new and old places

along the Kitto Line with the mindset of a curious tourist, and wrote

this report while reminiscing about the memories I have made over

the last four years.

残りのレポートが気になると思った皆様方に、まず吉都線沿いにある市町村の紹介から入りたいと思い

ます。

吉都線の始発・終着地である都城は、薩摩藩の領土であったこと、宮崎県で２番目に大きい街であるこ

とで、歴史探訪からショッピングまで、観光やグルメの選択肢が幅広いです。夏には街中でおかげ祭り・

盆地祭りなどといった大きい祭りで賑わいます。路線バスもありますし、駅舎にある観光案内所では自

転車も無料で借りられるので、効率よく観光が出来ます。勇気さえあれば遠い所まで行けて充実した１

日が過ごせます。５月に行ったときはたった３時間で焼酎工場を見学して、アヤメの中を散策し、ロー

カル感溢れるベーカリーで朝食を済ませました。もう少し時間があれば他の場所に行けて、もう少しお

腹が大きかったらもっと沢山美味しいものが食べられたのに、、、と悔しい思いをしたのは当然です。

For those of you who have found this article interesting enough to read the rest of this report, let’s have

a look at each city in the Nishimoro region that lies along the Kitto Line!

Having been a territory of the reputable Satsuma clan and the second largest city in Miyazaki Prefecture,

Miyakonojo, the first and last stop of the Kitto Line, has a plethora of attractions from a historic tour to

shopping. In summer, the city bustles with Okage Matsuri and Bonchi Matsuri in the downtown area and

when not in summer, you can still do quick sightseeing on a local bus or rental bicycle from the tourist

information center located inside Miyakonojo Station. Back in May when I visited, I managed to tour a

shochu distillery, amble amongst thousands of iris flowers in full bloom, and eat a hearty breakfast at a

quaint bakery in just three hours. It is no secret that I regretted not dedicating more time and room in my

stomach to this city.

宮崎に赴任した頃から行きたいと思っていた高原は「日本で最も美しい村」連合の加盟村ということも

あって、吉都線沿いの４市町村の中で一番自然の良さが感じられるのはないかと思います。大型の建物

はもちろん、道路を走る車や人がなかなか見かけられず、四方が山、林、田んぼ、野菜畑に囲まれてい

ます。地下水が流れる音がどこからともなく聞こえて、BGM がいりません！どこか寂しい感じもしま

すが、逆にそういった雰囲気が心を落ち着かせてくれます。そして「天神降臨の地」として、高千穂に

匹敵する素晴らしい歴史があります。宮崎市からはアクセスが厳しくてなかなか行きづらいですが、都

城からだと列車一本で行けます。

Takaharu, in my humble opinion, is the best place out of the four towns along the Kitto Line to see

nature at its finest, being a member of “The Most Beautiful Villages in Japan” organization. You will rarely

see tall buildings, and neither will you encounter vehicles or pedestrians on the road that often.

Everywhere you go, you will be surrounded by mountains, forest, rice and vegetable fields, and hear

streams of spring water which will treat your ears to all kinds of dripping beats and sounds from near and

far. The isolation will make you feel lonely at times, but that feeling of solitude will also calm your mind. As

the place where “The Descendent of Heavenly God descended from the Heaven,”₁ Takaharu also has a

splendid history parallel to that of Takachiho in northern Miyazaki. Transportation options are severely

limited if you travel from Miyazaki City; however, from Miyakonojo, Takaharu can be reached in less than

30 minutes on the Kitto Line.

町の PR に西諸弁を話すフランス人を全面的に出して全国的に有名になった小林には、CM のおかげな

のか県外から移住が進んでいます。何人か街のマルシェやカフェでお会いしましたが、地元の人と変わ

らず、いやむしろ小林に対する思いが強いと感じました。そして、チーズ饅頭、花畑、淡水魚、果物、

天文台、蛍、陰陽石など、不思議なごとに関連性があまりなさそうな物が集まっています。秋の生駒高

原で開催するコスモス祭りは一押しの秋の風物詩であり、コスモスのライトアップ、輝くキャンドル、

からっとした秋の夜空を飾る花火は、誰だって感動するものでしょう。街中が駅のすぐ側にあって、新

しく建てられた駅舎もどのように使われるか楽しみです。

Kobayashi has earned its fame largely from the promotional video that went viral last year, featuring an

immaculately dressed French monsieur speaking the local dialect perfectly. After meeting several local

vendors at the city’s monthly marché and hearing about their strong affection towards their new home, I

felt that Kobayashi is indeed attracting a lot of people from outside of Miyazaki. Part of the reason may be

due to a number of disparate things which Kobayashi is famous for—cheese manju, flower field,

freshwater fish, fruits, sky observatory, fireflies, and a phallus-shaped rock. You will find something

interesting at any time of the year; however, fall is an especially amazing time to visit Kobayashi for the

cosmos festival held at Ikoma Plateau. You will have an unforgettable night filled with thousands of

cosmos flowers illuminated in the dark, twinkling candles displayed on the ground, and fireworks dotting

the crisp night sky. The downtown area is within walking distance from the station, and the new station

building, which was under construction at the time of visit, is expected to bring new opportunities for

locals and visitors alike.

えびのはススキが周辺の火山活動の影響でエビのように赤くなることから名付けられた街だそうです。

数々の文人がえびのを訪れて作品を残しましたが、中でも頭に残るのは俳人の種田山頭火です。「山の

水はあふれあふれて」みたいな、いくつかのシンプルであるいはパンチのある俳句を残しました。さす

がにえびのは豊かな観光資源を誇り、特にえびの高原は年間通して霧島の色々な顔を見せてくれて、他

にも色々な施設が整えられているので、登山が苦手な方であっても時間をつぶすことが出来ます。もち

ろんえびの高原まで足を伸ばさなくても、各駅の周辺にも観光やグルメのスポットがあります。吉都線

だけではなく肥薩線も通っていて、田んぼの真横から、または山の上から街の様子が眺められます。

Ebino (えびの), according to locals, was named based on the phenomenon of pampas grass turning red

like a shrimp(えび) due to the region’s volcanic activity. Some famous writers have visited Ebino and left

literary pieces, amongst whom is Santoka Taneda, an eclectic haiku poet who wandered Kyushu Island,

perpetually intoxicated. He left some haiku poems that are simple and on point, such as “Mountain water

overflowing and overflowing (山の水はあふれてあふれて)“ As such, Ebino has a lot to offer as a tourist

destination. Complete with a skating rink, hot spring, restaurant and café, and a spacious souvenir shop,

Ebino Plateau is a great place to pass time even if you do not like hiking. Of course, you can still find

sightseeing spots and gourmet restaurants around train stations without making your way to Ebino

Plateau. You can also ride on the Hisatsu Line from the historic Masaki Station and view the cityscape

from various viewpoints, such as next to a rice field or from high above.

それぞれ個性があり、ゆるキャラも皆異なる反面、共通点も多いです。まず、西諸県は自然豊かです。

渋谷の交差点や、東京都庁から眺める高層ビルのパッチワークなど、超先進国のイメージとは全く違う

風景が楽しめます。霧島連山が雄大にそびえ立っていて、完璧な二等三角形の形をした杉の木が並んで

いて、綺麗な地下水がちょろちょろと流れている様子は、見るだけで多忙な日常に疲れている私たちに

癒しをくれます。一年中いつ行ってもその時にしか味わえない四季の楽しみがあります。しかも、どれ

だけ田舎であっても道はアスファルトですので、靴が汚れる心配もありません。

私のおすすめの自然スポットは高原の御池です。駅から歩いて行くには少し距離があるので、バスのス

ケジュールに合わせて移動しないといけませんが、映画「君の名は」に出てきそうな巨大な火山湖はも

ちろん、野生の鳥達が作り出す生のオーケストラが聞けて、整然とした霧島東神社があります。バス停

の近くにはちょっとしたレストラン街もあります。

Although Miyaknojo, Takaharu, Kobayashi, and Ebino have mascots representing different offerings that

each city has and can shine on its own, they share commonalities as well. First of all, towns in Nishimoro

have phenomenal natural beauty. Unlike the Shibuya crossings and the patchwork of high-rise

buildings seen from the observatory of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government office, you will be fully

immersed into the idyllic landscape that is nothing like the popular image of a hyper-developed nation.

Just looking at the majestic Kirishima Mountain Range standing behind the perfectly isosceles cedar trees

and crystal-clear ground water trickling across the field will help release the fatigue accumulated from the

hustle and bustle of city life. Throughout the year, you will find something special in nature that highlights

the season. Yet however rural it gets, the roads are mostly (if not all) paved, so you won’t have to worry

about getting your shoes dirty at the end of trip!

My favorite scenic spot is Miike Lake in Takaharu. You will have to plan around the bus schedule since it is

a little far to walk from the train station, but the trip is worth the trouble, considering that you can see a

giant volcanic lake reminiscent of the movie “Your Name,” hear the live chorus of wild birds incessantly

chirping, and feel the serenity of Kirishima Higashi Shrine, a neat vermillion shrine on top of the hill from

where you can overlook the whole lake. A little restaurant district is also near the bus stop.

次に、日本歴史の源流とも言える伝統がそのまま生き残っています。私は宮崎をよくギリシャのアテネ

に例えます。ギリシャは他のヨーロッパの国と比べて旅行先として人気がないかもしれませんが、神話

や海がとても有名であることから認知度は高いです。同じく宮崎も「神話の故郷」として、西諸県には

「霧島六社権現」など興味深い神話や歴史と絡んだ由緒のある神社が散在しています。田んぼのど真ん

中にあったり、杉並木の片隅にあったりして、緑と共に神秘的な雰囲気を出しています。時期が合えば、

神社に行ったついでに祭りや神楽にも参加できるし、ご朱印やお守りなどその神社でしかない記念品も

手に入れられます。ピノキオのような長い鼻が印象的な天狗のストラップは、霧島東神社で買いました。

Secondly, there are timeless traditions some of which date back to the beginning of Japanese history. I

like to compare Miyazaki to Athens in Greece: Greece may not be as popular as other European countries

as a tourist destination, but it is widely recognized for the dramatic myths and azure sea. Likewise, as

“Home of Japanese Myths,” Miyazaki, or Nishimoro region in particular, boasts numerous legendary tales

and historic shrines that are tied to ancient Japanese history—check out “Kirishima Rokusha Gongen(霧

島六社権現)”₂ if you can! Spread across multiple locations, shrines in Nishimoro create a mythical

ambiences, some of which are standing in the middle of the rice paddies and tucked into the corner of the

rows of centuries-old cedar trees. If lucky, you will be able to participate in festivals and watch kagura(神

楽)₃ performances, and buy stamped calligraphy and lucky charms. As you can see in the photo, the

tengu(天狗)₄ strap I bought at Kirishima Higash Shrine shares a striking resemblance to Pinocchio with an

elongated nose.

そして日本文化を代表する温泉が沸いています。宮崎は隣の熊本、大分、鹿児島ほど温泉のイメージは

強くありませんが、吉都線沿いには自慢の温泉が沢山あり、その種類もラムネをそのまま流しているよ

うな炭酸泉から、火傷をしてもおかしくないほど熱いかけ流し湯まで様々です。昔階級社会だった頃に

は、温泉で皆裸になることで身分を問わず率直なコミュニケーションを図っていたということで、温泉

施設は文化・歴史の場として外国人が訪れるべきだと思います。。裸になることに抵抗を感じる人もい

るかもしれませんが、長い旅の後、気持ちいいシャワーが出来るのはもちろん、日本人の清潔さや厳し

い公衆マナーが分かるし、場所によっては買い物や食事、宿泊も出来ます。京町温泉では、地域限定の

かわいらしい紫色の浴衣が通用していて、温泉に入った後そのまま散策することも出来るのではないで

しょうか。

Next, Nishimoro is filled with hot springs known as onsen in Japan. Compared to the neighboring

prefectures of Kumamoto, Oita, and Kagoshima, Miyazaki as a whole is not well known for hot springs.

Along the Kitto Line, however, there are many excellent hot spring facilities with a wide range of variety,

from highly condensed carbon springs to extremely hot surfur springs. I strongly recommend that every

foreigner visit a hot spring as a unique cultural and historical site; back when people were divided into

class according to their socioeconomic status, a hot spring was the only place where everyone was able to

transcend the social divide and speak frankly with each other. You might be reluctant to undress yourself

in front of strangers, but I believe that the pros outweigh the cons. Not only you can have a relaxing

shower, but you also see the cleanliness and strict public manners of Japanese people first hand.

Depending on the facility, you can do grocery shopping, have a meal, or stay overnight. In the Kyomachi

hot spring district, visitors can even don a purple yukata bathing robe that is designed exclusively for the

local hot spring facilities. Why not take a stroll while wearing the beautiful yukata after soaking in mineral

rich water?

最後に宮崎牛からソフトクリームまで様々な食があります。最近仕事で一緒にアメリカに行ったメンバ

ーで一番盛り上がったのが、どれだけアメリカの食べ物がおいしくないかということでした。宮崎の食

べ物は安くて、安全で、栄養価値も高く、美味しいのは言うまでもありません。その良さを味わうだけ

で宮崎を理解出来ると言っても過言ではないでしょう。県西にも日本最高を誇る宮崎牛や、種類・飲み

方色々の焼酎、和と洋両方を楽しめるチーズ饅頭、田の神さぁに祝福された米、３０年の研究を重ねた

力作のキャビア等、新鮮でおいしいものを沢山作っています。単にレストランで食べるだけでなく、道

の駅、無人販売所、マルシェ等で買うことも出来ますし、更には工場見学、果物狩り、農家民泊を通し

て地元産業に触れることもできます。

Lastly, Nishimoro is a paradise for food lovers, having all sorts of gourmet possibilities from wagyu beef to

soft serve. On a recent business trip to the United States, one of the most intensely discussed topics was

the mediocre taste of American food; everyone agreed that food in Miyazaki is affordable, safe to eat,

nutritious, and also tasty! It is not too far-fetched to say that you can understand Miyazaki through the

food. Western Miyazaki indeed produces a lot of fresh and scrumptious food products, including but not

limited to: Japan’s very best Miyazaki Beef, different types of shochu whiskey, East-meets-West cheese

manju, rice with blessings from the tanokami(田の神)₅ guardinas, and caviar which took 30 years of

research to enter the market! You can not only eat them at restaurants but also buy them neatly

packaged at rest areas, road stands, vending machines, and outdoor markets. Moreover, you can have a

glimpse of the thriving agricultural industry through a facility tour, fruit picking, and farm stay.

これらを担う西諸の人々はなんて愉快で、優しいでしょう！レストランの営業時間に間に合わなさそう

なときは断らないで車で迎えに来てくださったり、店をちょろちょろするだけなのにお茶を入れてくだ

さったり、CM「んだもしたん」を思い出し、ついクスクスと笑ってしまう私を最後まで濃い西諸弁で

フォローしてくださいました。「恋人までの距離」みたいな出会いはありませんでしたが、素敵な人々

ばかりでした。

Of course, you cannot talk about the charm of Miyazai without talking about the locals! They are some of

the funniest and kindest souls I have ever met. Rather than refuse, they picked me up from the middle of

nowhere and drove me to the restaurant when I called to inquire about the business hours 30 minutes

before closing time. They offered me freshly brewed tea with sweet potato snacks although I was just

mindlessly browsing their shelves with no intention of shopping in their shop. And they did not resent me

when I was not able to control my laughter in reaction to their thick Nishimoro accent, and patiently

followed up with me till the very end of my visit. There was no romantic fling like the movie “Before

Sunrise,” but the people I met were nothing but amazing!

最後に、これほど魅力溢れる西諸県を、わざわざ電車に乗って行く理由を述べたいと思います。まず、

便利、という単語が頭に浮かびます。電車を利用することで交通事故、渋滞、車酔い、駐車場確保とい

った車と関わる心配を排除できるからです。電車のダイヤは正確ですので延着する恐れがありませんし、

便数もわりと多く、定期的で、朝から晩まで１～２時間おきにありますので柔軟に計画が立てられます。

特に外国人の観光客は九州レールパスを利用して旅行する場合が多いので、予約や別途料金の支払いが

なくても熊本や鹿児島、宮崎の新幹線、特急列車、観光列車から乗り継ぎが出来ます。

To conclude this report, I would like to articulate the appeal of taking the train to such an irresistible

destination. The first keyword that comes to my mind is convenience. You will be free from worries that

are usually associated with driving a car: traffic accidents, congestion, motion sickness, or parking. Trains

in Japan are known for being always on time and posing no risk of delay. You can also be relatively flexible,

for the service is available every hour or two from early morning to late night. If you are a foreigner, you

can transfer to the Kitto Line from the shinkansen, limited express train, or resort express train in

Kumamoto and Kagoshima without advanced reservation or additional payment.

吉都線の旅は、感覚的です。おしゃれな内装や目を暗ませる坂道はありませんが、日常の街並みや大自

然のパノラマを絶えず見せてくれます。そして窓を開けて外の空気や日差しをそのまま浴びることもで

きますので、見る楽しみはもちろん、肌で感じる楽しみもあります。（もちろん、安全には充分気をつ

けましょう）ところが、車で移動すると、途中で信号や他の車に止めさせられたり、カーブや坂道など

で持続的に楽しむことが出来ません。電車に乗ることで移動が旅を完成させる必要不可欠な要素になり、

沢山の場所に足を運ばなくても充分観光出来た満足感を与えてくれます。

Traveling on the Kitto Line awakens your senses. The iconic diesel train neither has fancy decoration nor

runs exhilarating slopes, but presents scenes from everyday life and a panoramic view of the grandeur of

mother nature. Besides the visual pleasure, you get tactile pleasure—you can open the window and feel

the breeze and sunshine uninterrupted. (Let’s not forget about safety though.) Meanwhile, traveling by

car makes it difficult to sustain excitement due to traffic lights, other vehicles, sudden curves, or slopes.

Kitto Line trips are romantic. Have you ever imagined yourself on a one-man train running across some

vast plane and at a deserted station, and walking aimlessly along the railroad? It may sound like a story

from somewhere distant in Europe, but whatever fantasy you have in your mind about train trips, you can

make it come true on the Kitto Line. It will be a great opportunity to get away from technology and the

fast pace of everyday life, and to be able to relax, have a serendipitous encounter, and reaffirm the values

that may not have noticed in your daily life.

最後に、吉都線に乗ることは社会的な行動です。吉都線は１００年以上の歴史を誇る宮崎の遺産であり、

山間部を結ぶ大事な交通手段です。なのに、少子高齢化や自動車の普及により乗車率が下がり、この傾

日本の魅力に触れたいという方々には、吉都線を是非おすすめします。電車に乗ってゆっくり歩き回る

そして宮崎県民の方々も、今まで当たり前すぎて行ってみたいとは思わなかった地元の観光地にチャレ

accommodations is available to meet your needs and preferences, ranging from camping grounds to

traditional Japanese-style lodges. For those who have already indulged in the concrete jungle of mega

cities and bullet trains, and are looking for a lesser-known alternative, I guarantee that you will have a

blast in Nishimoro! The fun will increase twofold as you take the train and stroll at your own pace.

Also, if you are a Miyazaki local having never thought of sightseeing in your neighborhood, please

challenge this notion by making your way to nearby tourist spots. American author Mark Twain once said

that “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” I do not think that only long-distance

travels matter. The Kitto Line travel will shatter your long-held prejudice against Miyazaki as a trifling

place undeserving public attention.
