Welcome to Celebrity’s Galapagos

Dear Celebrity Guest,

A voyage through the unspoiled Galapagos Islands is a one-of-a-kind

experience to one of the world’s most precious archipelagos, and we’re

thrilled that you’ve chosen Celebrity Xpedition® to take you there.

If you’ve sailed with Celebrity Cruises® before, you’ll undoubtedly notice

a more relaxed atmosphere onboard Celebrity Xpedition. The dress code

is casual day and night, and the overall environment is more intimate,

with just under 100 guests per sailing. And we think you’ll be glad to

know you’ll be sailing on a ship ecologically designed to leave the

pristine islands of the Galapagos virtually untouched.

As on every Celebrity ship, large or small, you’ll experience our

commitment to extraordinary service, with a guest-to-staff ratio of

2:1, and many of the amenities you would expect from us, such as

complimentary use of plush, Frette bathrobes; hot tub, sauna and fitness

room; fine cuisine, and a lounge featuring nightly lectures by naturalists,

as well as live music.

Whether this is your first Celebrity cruise or your 50th, we hope to have

the opportunity to serve you for many years to come. Meanwhile, we

thank you for joining us for an extraordinary Celebrity cruise vacation.

Sincerely,

Dan Hanrahan

President, Celebrity Cruises

Settlers have carved out their lives on the lava rocks, pirateshave profited, and scientists have explored—the history of theGalápagos is rich and diverse, with tales of basic survival andextraordinary discovery. Humans have inhabited the islandsfor less than 200 years, and today it is estimated that 20,000people call the Galapágos home. The major events in theislands’ history are listed in the time line to the right. Onefamous visitor, however, deserves particular attention.

CharlesDarwin in theGalápagosIn 1835, the Galápagos received a visitor who would change theislands, and the world, forever. Charles Darwin, only 26 years oldat the time, had embarked on a round-the-world voyage aboardthe HMS Beagle, as part of the English Admiralty’s worldwidemapping efforts. Sailing from Tierra del Fuego and up the coastsof Chile and Peru, Darwin arrived and spent five weeks studyingthe fauna of the Galápagos.

Darwin learned from one of the islands’ residents that it waspossible to distinguish which island a tortoise came from by theshape of its shell. (We now understand, thanks to Darwin, thatthe differences developed among tortoises as a result of wherethey find their food.)

With this knowledge, and his observations about the variety offinches present in the islands, Darwin began to understand thata species is not unchangeable, but adapts to its environment asnecessary to survive. Many years later, his theory came to lightin The Origin of the Species, published in 1859.

I s l and fo rmat ion and geography

The Galápagos Islands are completely oceanic. This meansthat none have ever been connected to the mainland—all 19islands and 42 islets rose from the ocean floor, the productsof repeated volcanic eruptions. The Galápagos region is stillconsidered one of the most volcanically active places in theworld, with 13 significant eruptions in the last 100 years. Theislands are believed to have formed from east to west; theoldest is between 3 and 4 million years old.

The Galápagos archipelago, stretching 174 miles from eastto west, sits on a “hot spot” in the earth’s crust, where hotvolcanic magma is always in motion and seismic activity iscommon. The Galápagos are situated on the enormousunderwater Nazca plate, which is moving slowly eastward, toward the South American plate.

Constant activity has been observed on the islandsthemselves when shifting plates have pushedunderwater landmasses above the surface. Thisphenomenon occurred in 1954 on Isabela Island, when uplift brought coral heads and a portion ofthe sea floor more than 50 feet above sea level.

Features to look for:Roca Redonda: This breathtaking rock emerging from thesea off the north coast of Isabela Island glows a brilliant red inthe sunlight.

Daphné Islands: These striking volcanic tuff cones are locatedabout six miles west of Baltra Island and north of Santa Cruz.Daphné Major, the younger of the islands, has kept its cone, while erosion has taken its toll on Daphné Minor, creating stark, sheer cliffs.

Tread lightly,leave no trace

Resto ra t ion and conser va t ion o f the is l ands

The natives of the Galápagos may have a hearty ability to adaptto their environment, but that environment itself is fragile, and theemphasis is now on restoring the islands to their natural state.

The islands were compromised hundreds of years ago, whenpirates introduced new species and pillaged the tortoisepopulation for meat. But today, nearly 100% of the archipelago, and all of its waters, are an Ecuadorian national park, with strictrules to minimize human impact on the environment. Efforts areconstantly under way to preserve this jewel, this living laboratory, for future generations.

The Charles Darwin Research Station

Officially inaugurated in 1964, the Charles Darwin ResearchStation was established as a center of education, information, conservation, and research in the islands. Darwin Station isdedicated to the protection, preservation, and reintroductionof native species, successfully returning many tortoises to theirnative islands. The station has also become a champion oferadicating certain introduced animals, particularly the feralgoats that have devastated vegetation.

Where the (friendly)wild things are

The crea tu res o f the Ga lápagos

Imagine a world of unique creatures who have lived so long inisolation, with so few predators, that they have no fear ofhumans; a world where animals can be just as curious aboutyou as you are about them.

The Galápagos is that world, with diverse populations of reptiles, birds, mammals, and marine life. Galápagos animals found theirway here in ocean and wind currents and adapted to their newenvironment—some are found nowhere else on earth.

The following section covers the animals you’re likely to seeon your journey. At the beginning of the Travel Notes section, you’ll find a checklist you can use to keep track of the wildlifeyou’ve seen.

24

ReptilesThey might not be the islands’ most cuddly inhabitants, butDarwin was obviously correct when he called the Galápagos“a paradise for reptiles.” From the dragonlike iguana to thevenerable giant tortoise, the Galápagos is home to 27 speciesof reptiles, 17 of which are endemic to the islands.

Marine IguanasThey look like little dragons, but marineiguanas are living examples of the adaptation

of a species. What’s more, these are theonly marine iguanas in the world.

They’ve adapted to their environment over time, taking on theirsoot-black color to blend with the Islands’ volcanic rocks andto absorb more heat from the sun. The iguanas can dive up to60 feet into ocean waters for feasts of algae and seaweed, buttend to feed at low tide when algae are exposed.

Land IguanasLand iguanas are yellowish-orange to brown in color, and live formore than 60 years. Land iguanaslive in small colonies, and maybe found on the driest parts of theislands they inhabit.

Lava LizardsSeven species of lava lizard are endemic tothe Galápagos. Females feature beautifulred-orange throats, while males have lessdistinctive, grayish-black heads and necks.

Marine TurtlesThese versatile little creatures live for up to 50years. The only marine turtle commonly foundin the Galápagos Islands is the green turtle.A female green turtle will emerge from thewater after dark to lay her eggs on the beach, ina hole she digs with her back flippers.

26

Reptiles (continued)Giant TortoisesThe giant tortoise is probably the mostfamous resident of the Galápagos Islands.Big, independent creatures, 11 speciessurvive on the islands today.

No one is sure how old a giant tortoise can grow to be, but itis known they live well past 100 years of age and can weigh upto 500 pounds. These peaceful animals fell victim to man whenpirates began visiting the islands in the 1500s. Pirates pillagedtens of thousands of turtles for their fresh meat, because theanimals could be stored on ships for months, with no foodor water. Now the giant tortoises’ only predators are animalsintroduced to the islands by humans, which feed on tortoiseeggs and on small tortoises after they hatch.

Sea, Shore, and Lagoon BirdsEven if a certain Alfred Hitchcock movie gave you mixed feelingsabout birds, you’ll feel at ease with the friendly, relaxed inhabitantsof the Galápagos. Migrating sea birds initially came here fromEcuador, Colombia, the Caribbean, and Peru. Five of the 19species of sea birds found here are unique to the Galápagos: theGalápagos penguin, the flightless cormorant, the lava gull, theswallowtail gull, and the Galápagos waved albatross.

Galápagos PenguinThe peculiar, hopping little walk of a Galápagospenguin belies its swift underwater presence. On land, its movements seem like a comedy routine, completewith slapstick sliding and rolling. In the ocean, thepenguin swims gracefully with its frontfins and steers with its feet.

Flightless CormorantIn part because it has no natural predatorsin the Galápagos, the flightless cormorant isdistinguished by small, atrophied wings. Found onlyin the Galápagos, this is one of the rarest birds inthe world, with an estimated population of just 1,000.

Page 46: Celebr it y’s Galapag osmedia.celebritycruises.com/...Galapagos_Book_Nov07.pdf · Island. Making flight connections in either Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra Island on the same day

27

Lava GullFind a soot-black sea bird peeking at you from

between its legs, and you’ll have found a lava gull. This is a submissive gesture from the rare bird. Listen

for their loud, distinctive shrieks, similar to a human laugh.

Waved AlbatrossThis is the largest bird in the Galápagos Islands, with a wingspan of 2.5 meters. The waved albatrossspends its life at sea, only coming ashore to mate.Española Island is the only place in the world it reproduces. The birds mate for life, and can live for up to 40 years.

Great FrigateThis vulture of the sea boasts a wingspan aslarge as that of the albatross. Their large wingsserve them well as they glide through the sky in

search of food. Males feature a greenish hue to theirblack feathers. When courting, the male will inflate a large redpouch under his throat to attract and seduce the female.

BoobiesThese iconic birds are plentiful throughout the islands, and youmight catch a glimpse of a booby plunge-diving—at speeds of upto 70 mph—to feed on fish that swim at the water’s surface.

The blue-footed booby enjoys a lifespan of 15 to 20years, and fishes for its food inshore. To attract a mate, the male blue-footed booby dances, brings his tail up,spreads his wings, and whistles toward the sky.

The red-footed booby is smaller andlighter than its blue-footed counterpart. It is the

only booby that nests in trees, havingadapted its red feet for perching on branches.

Red-footed boobies are the most commonboobies found in the Galápagos.

Large but not as colorful, the masked booby features ablack featherless mask around the face, contrastingstarkly with its white feathers.

28

Land BirdsAlthough they live on land, these birds know the meaningof “sink or swim.” All the land birds of the Galápagos wereswept onto the islands by trade winds, and with no wayback to the mainland they had to adapt or die. Today, 22species of land bird are endemic to the Galápagos, including13 species of Darwin’s finches, four species of mockingbird,a dove, flycatcher, hawk, martin, and rail.

Darwin’s FinchesDarwin’s theory of evolution brought fame to the dark,sparrow-sized finches of the Galápagos Islands. Thefinches look alike to the untrained eye. It was through

much observation and contemplation that Darwincame to understand their significance: The subtle

diversity within the species was borne from one mother speciesthat adapted its beak shape and function depending on itssurroundings and what it needed to do to survive.

Galápagos MockingbirdFollow your ears to find communities of thesesquawking, social birds. These predators, withtheir downward curving black beaks, feed onsmall finches, lava lizards, and insects.

Galápagos DoveA unique turquoise-blue ring around the eyedistinguishes the small Galápagos dove.Watch for it feeding on seeds and caterpillars.

FlycatchersThe tiny red vermillion flycatcher might bespotted in the forest highlands of the central

islands. A red-orange belly and head indicate amature male, while females and juvenile males

feature far-less-brilliant yellow bellies.

The large-billed flycatcher, while less striking thanthe vermillion, is endemic to the Galápagos, and hasthe curious habit of using human hair to constructits nest.

Page 48: Celebr it y’s Galapag osmedia.celebritycruises.com/...Galapagos_Book_Nov07.pdf · Island. Making flight connections in either Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra Island on the same day

29

Galápagos MartinThe Galápagos martin finds its home in the cliffsides, calderas, and volcano rims of the centralislands. It looks like a big, dark swallow and

lives in small groups.

Galápagos HawkOne of the few predators in the Galápagos, the hawkenjoys its place at the top of the islands’ food chain. The hawk is a sharp, deadly bird that detects itsprey from a great distance.

MammalsHaving never been connected to the mainland, the GalápagosIslands are home to few native mammals. With the exceptionsof sea lions and fur sea lions, native mammalian life on the islandsis somewhat less than picturesque, and includes only two speciesof bat and a few species of rat.

All other mammals on the islands—feral goats, dogs, pigs, cats, and black rats—were introduced by man. In a curious evolutionarynote, some of the islands’ feral dogs have developed a capacity todrink salty seawater without harm.

Sea Lions and Fur Sea LionsMajestic and enchanting, the sea lions of theGalápagos Islands gather in colonies onthe sands and rocks. They feed primarily onsardines and can dive as deep as 100 meters.

Sea lions feed during the day and spendhours sleeping on beaches, or bodysurfingin waves. Their life span is up to 20 years.

Fur sea lions are smaller than sea lionsand are distinguished by their pointednoses and big, round eyes. Unlike sealions, they feed at night, mostly on squidand small fish. Visitors often mistake fursea lions for seals. However, seals donot appear anywhere in the Galápagos.

Marine LifeIf you have the opportunity to snorkel around the Galápagos, you’ll see a world as varied and wondrous as that on land.

More than 300 species of fish have been identified in the watersaround the islands, with more being recorded every year. Severalspecies of shark inhabit these waters, but divers take note: Thesharks enjoy such an abundant food supply that noattack on a human has ever beenrecorded in the Galápagos Islands.

Even from the shoreline, youmight witness the breathtakingsight of a giant manta ray leapingfrom the sea and landing loudlyagainst the waves. You mightalso spot dolphins, sharks, andeagle rays. And as you explore the beaches, take a look underfoot: The unique, bright orange and yellowSally Lightfoot crab is bound to be sunning itself on arock near you.

Although born of the same volcanic matter, the GalápagosIslands are wonderfully diverse. Tides, currents, and winds allinfluence the wildlife and natural features of each island, asdoes each island’s position within the archipelago. Here we’llcover many of the islands you’re likely to visit on your journey.Island stops may vary, however, since itineraries are provided bythe Galápagos Park Service and are always subject to change.

You’ll begin your Galápagos journey on Baltra Island, whereyou’ll find an airport, a ferry station, and the occasional landiguana to welcome you.

Isla North SeymourNorth of Baltra, North Seymour is a small, arid islandmeasuring less than one square mile. A fabulous array ofwildlife makes North Seymour well worth a visit. Follow a1.5-mile circular trail through some of the largest and mostspectator-friendly seabird breeding colonies in the Galápagos. The trail is a great place to witness the courtship, mating, nesting, and chick rearing of several species, including greatfrigate birds and swallowtail gulls.

Española, the southernmost island in the archipelago, featuresa central volcano and a total land surface of more than23 square miles. Wildlife is rich here, helped along by theeradication of feral goats in 1978. Giant tortoises have beenreintroduced, and they now number more than 1,000.

At the westerly Punta Suarez landing point, a 1.25-mile trailleads past a beach filled with sunbathing sea lions and marineiguanas. The trail follows a ridge and features beautiful viewsof the beaches and cliffs below. At the end of the trail you’ll findan impressive blowhole, where seawater plumes up to 60 feetin the air from basaltic rocks.

Gardner Bay, on the northeast side of the island, featureswhite-sand beaches, where sea lions laze in the sun. (Sealions are particularly photogenic and easy to photographhere, so be sure to have your camera.) The beach is alsoa lovely place for swimming and snorkeling.

At 380 square miles, this is the most populated island in thearchipelago, and one of only five inhabited islands. Relative tothe rest of the islands, Santa Cruz is a bustling hub of activity. The highlands of Santa Cruz offer a unique experience of lush, moist island vegetation and exceptional bird watching.

Puerto Ayora, with a population of 1,200, is the maintown, featuring the Charles Darwin ResearchStation. Here you’ll learn about restoration efforts topreserve the islands, and you’ll discover more aboutthe islands’ history. You’ll also find tortoise rearingand observation areas where you can say hello to LonesomeGeorge, the last of the Pinta giant tortoises, and is estimatedto be between 90 and 170 years old. A visit to the TortoiseReserve provides the opportunity to witness giant tortoisesin their natural habitat.

If you’re looking for souvenirs, Puerto Ayora is a good placefor shopping.

Less than half a square mile in size, this tiny island, with itscentral volcano, is the most visited among the islands.

Bartolomé features a quintessential volcanic landscape, withPinnacle Rock towering 359 feet over the deep blue sea.The steps leading to the top were put in place to help controlerosion. Photographs from the summit of Pinnacle Rock arethe most popular in the Galápagos, and well worth each ofthe 379 steps you’ll hike to get there.

Another moment shutterbugs won’t want to miss: Inthe north cove, just beneath Pinnacle Rock, you’ll finda sandy beach perfect for swimming, where you mightbe joined by Galápagos penguins.

On the slopes of the volcano, the only vegetationyou’ll find is Tiquilia Chamaesyca, featuring green or

red leaves with tiny white flowers, and lava cactus.

With six towering volcanoes peppering its 1,771 square miles,Isabela Island makes up 60% of the total landmass of thearchipelago. An impressive example of how active thegeography of the Galápagos remains: In 1954, nearly two milesof Isabela Island’s reef uplifted 53 feet, due to a shift in theoceanic plate underneath. Thousands of sea animals foundthemselves underwater one minute and on dry land the next.

All the island’s volcanoes are active, with Cerro Azulerupting for a month and a half in 1998. The equator runsthrough the Ecuador and Wolf volcanoes. This unlikely, inhospitable landscape provides a fantastic array of wildlife.

Tagus Cove was named after an English warship thatpassed by in the 19th century. A frequent anchoring pointfor buccaneers, whalers, sealers, and pirates, the cove stillhas the sailors’ graffiti along the cliff walls. Herman Melvilletraveled through here, and his time on a whaling ship wasintegral to the writing of Moby Dick.

A trail leads to the 4,000-foot-high Darwin Volcano. The shorecliffs of Tagus Cove are a good place to see Galápagospenguins and flightless cormorants.

At 247 square miles, Fernandina is the youngest andwesternmost island in the Galápagos—it also features oneof the most active volcanoes in the world, with the mostrecent eruption occurring in 1995.

In 1968, the floor of the volcano’s caldera sank 990feet instantaneously. Darwin wrote that Fernandina is“covered with immense deluges of black naked lava.”And geologically speaking, there’s never a dullmoment on the island.

Punta Espinosa, on the northeast corner of the island, hasbeen lifted and lowered many times in the last few decades.A trail will take you through fresh lava landscapes dottedwith small forests of mangroves. Look for sea lion colonies, the largest colony of marine iguanas in the islands, and acolony of flightless cormorants.

Also known as James Island and San Salvador, Santiago is thefourth-largest island in the Galápagos, at 225 square miles.

Behind the black-sand shoreline, you’ll find Sugar Loaf,a volcano at the center of the island, surrounded bydense vegetation.

On the west side of the island is Puerto Egas, wherethe long, black lava shoreline houses an abundance ofwildlife and lava formations. Eroded tunnels coming infrom the sea provide spectacular pools that rise and fall withthe tide. Have your camera ready for action: These tidal poolsare a favorite swimming and frolicking spot for sea lions andfur sea lions.

The geographic center of the Galápagos Islands, Rábida isknown for the red-sand beach at its north end. Rábida isthe Galápagos’ most volcanically diversified island, althoughit measures just 1.9 square miles.

Eroded hills and lava spurts make up the island geography, with a uniquely beautiful purple-red cliff crumbling into thesea. In the cliffsides you’ll find blue-footed boobies andmasked boobies.

A saltwater lagoon here is one of the best places tofind flamingos. Approach with stealth if you wanta better look at these shy birds—flamingos are easilydisturbed and will fly away if they hear loud noises.

One of the four islands Charles Darwin visited during his timehere, Floreana was home to the first human settlers of theGalápagos and was made the archipelago’s first capital inthe 19th century. It soon became a penal colony, as manypolitical and other prisoners were sent here. The islandmeasures about 66 square miles, and its sand beaches playhost to sea turtles laying their eggs.

The visitor’s area of Post Office Bay is a smallbeach on the north side of the island. Follow theshort trail to a clearing—what looks like graffiti-covered debris is actually the famous post officebarrel, which was set up as a mailing system forwhalers in 1793. The system is simple: Englishand American sailors on the voyage out would leave mail inthe barrel, to be collected by other ships sailing for home. The barrel has been used as a mail drop ever since.
