Being in the accounting

industry, I’m accustomed to being very busy this time of year with September and October being final tax deadlines which brings us into a new beginning. Changes in priority are made. Cautious projections are calculated. It’s a time for rebirth; a time for retrospection; a time for assessment.

Your Chamber closed its fiscal 2012 year in August and inaugurated its new beginning fiscal 2013 on September 1st. In retrospect, we cherish the extraordinary stewardship of Chairman Drew Kern and his board of directors. With a tip o’ the hat, please join me and wish them happy landings. Thanks to them, our Chamber is a healthy, prestigious, dynamic operation. The 2012 year-end finds the Chamber in good fiscal shape. However, rest assured our new board, the divisional vice-chairs, committee chairs, ambassadors, trustee diplomats and staff under Mark Trowbridge, are reenergized, working in sync and with great confidence. We cautiously predict

increased membership; introducing new projects and programs, and remaining a responsive, dynamic organization in 2013.

October is one of my favorite months. We get a little taste of Fall. The armada heads down the glorious Biscayne Bay on Columbus Day. There’s UM Hurricane football to watch (sorry Mark!). The rainforest at Fairchild is less steamy. Coral Gables hotels and restaurants start welcoming tourists. Our trolleys are full. People are out on the sidewalks of Miracle Mile and Giralda until late into the evening. The Gablestage and Miracle Theater begin their new seasons.

Sincerely,Darla Thompson, Cherry, Bekaert & Holland

Happy New Year Chamber members! September 1st marks the beginning of our new fiscal year, as well as

the opportunity to welcome our new Chair of the Board, Darla Thompson and

her leadership team, to the helm of our Chamber. Darla has served in a variety of capacities in the Chamber over the past year on her pathway to the Chairmanship, most notably on our Board of Directors, Diplomat Corps and as our Treasurer.

Darla and her Board will be sworn-in officially at the September 20th Good Morning Coral Gables breakfast, where Mayor Cason will give his annual State of the City Beautiful address. You will not want to miss the amazing breakfast – always a highlight in our diverse cadre of programming during the year.

These are exciting times in our Chamber, with our leadership and volunteers engaged in numerous activities that will impact our business community significantly over the next year. From permitting assistance to producing the Burgerliscious! event, our Chamber has something for everyone!

After four long years, we truly believe we are on a road to economic recovery – now we need our business community to respond by adding jobs as consumer confidence returns. With a refined focus on local, state and federal issues affecting businesses of all sizes, to events that explore our real estate, green and international markets, the Chamber is committed to our membership’s needs, most importantly helping you grow your businesses.

Even in a rebounding economy filled with tenuous uncertainty, the Chamber is the one constant – growing and strengthening relationships that will lead to new business, new partnerships, and even new friendships. Now is the time to renew your membership, get more strongly engaged, and find the right spot in the Chamber that will help you grow! Our new Chair has focused her year on helping you grow your business alongside ours, with our members squarely at the top of our organization chart. It is our goal each day to be responsive to our members, our community, and our businesses. This requires a total team effort, each of us excelling in our respective roles and committing fully to developing business and building community.

As I begin my seventh year as your president, I am constantly reminded how fortunate I am to lead a Chamber that is truly dynamic and diversified, committed and community-oriented, responsive and relevant, as well as in-touch and in-sync with the needs of our members. We know that people join our Chamber…because of the companies we keep.

Thank you for your confidence and commitment to our Chamber. Come grow with us!

TRUSTEE TALK

www.coralgableschamber.org | CHAMBER CONNECTION | SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2012

I am honored to serve as your new Trustee Council Chair. I’m also honored to be a part of City National Bank, which has been a Trustee Member of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce for more than two decades and is also the Chamber’s banking relationship. City National Bank has been serving the Coral Gables community for close to 56 years. We are proud to continue to serve this wonderful community and partner with a great organization like the Gables Chamber.

Like the Chamber, CNB takes pride in its community. Community is a vital part of what we do and we are very proud and honored to be the South Florida Business Journal’s Community Bank of the Year.

I fully support the Chamber’s continuing mission to build business and develop community in Coral Gables. I look forward to furthering this mission as Chair of the Trustee Council.

I would also like to add my thanks to outgoing Chair Linda Knudsen of Baptist Health South Florida. Linda, you did an outstanding job. You will truly be a tough act to follow.

If you did not attend our Trustee Invitational & Interactive

Luncheon this past month…well, you missed a great event! With a sold-out crowd in attendance, Chef Alex Kuk of Pao Town wowed the participants with his master craft and delicious bites, including a filet mignon Korean bun, guiltless breast of chicken with Pao Town quinoa, and a delightful poached pear with ginger ice cream. Amazing!

Mark your calendars for several upcoming Trustee events, including our first Trustee Reception of the year, hosted by past Chamber Chair Carolina Rendeiro at her new Right Space 2 Meet location at 100 Miracle Mile. Receptions are a terrific way to meet other Trustees and get more engaged in the Chamber. Plus, admission is complimentary and part of your annual member benefit. Next month, we will be hosted at the brand new Riviera Health Resort in the South Gables.

Finally, to kick-off the year, we have a very special treat for our Trustees. The Luncheon on September 27th (please note the date change due to Yom Kippur), will feature famed physician to the star athletes Dr. Harlan Selesnick from Doctors Hospital. He will be joined in an intimate conversation by two very special guests from the world-champion Miami Heat.

Trust me, you do not want to miss an unforgettable luncheon event that promises to help you Get Back to What You Love!
