Charming Pachyderms

By Letty at Happy Dance Quilting

This sweet 31” x 37 “ quilt will make any child happy. It is easy to put

together and quilt, it’s a simple weekend

project, and it is such fun to play with the

fabric placement.

Ingredients

1 Charm Pack of a colorful fabric line – I used

Riley Blake’s Fly a Kite

1 Charm Pack of a neutral fabric I

used Moda’s Primitive Muslin

1 5" Charm Pack Tumbler Template

by Natalie Dawn for Missouri Star Quilt

Co

Batting and Backing for a 37 inch quilt

½ yard fabric for binding

1 fat quarter for elephant appliqué

Instructions

1. Choose 27 of your favorite

fabrics from the colorful charm

pack and 27 neutrals1.

2. Stack and cut a few 5 squares at

a time using the tumbler template.

1 If you want to duplicate my quilt exactly, you’ll need 2 charm packs ot the Primitive Muslin, and

you’ll want to leave out the darkest fabrics, and reserve 18 of the lightest ones for the top and

bottom pieced borders.

3. Sew blocks in pairs with one narrow end up matched against a

wide end. It will look like this.

4. When

pressed

open they

will make a

straight-

edged

rectangle.

5. Arrange in rows alternating

the neutrals with the prints in

a way that looks

pleasing to you. It

will be a

checkerboard.

6. Sew into rows, and

then sew rows

together keeping

your layout intact.

7. If you don’t want

to piece your

borders, you can

just sew 6 rows of checkerboard and then piece a 5 x 31 inch

border on the top and

bottom.

8. Use your favorite

appliqué method to

place 3 elephants on

the top as shown.

9. Quilt as desired and

bind.

Binding tip:

When turning corners you

want to stop ¼ inch before

the edge of the quilt. This

can be hard to see properly because the biding is on top of the

edge. I insert a pin just a tiny bit right before I come to the corner so

that when my needle and the pin are

exactly in line I know to stop.
