The Alba FieldAlba is located in Block 16/26, 130 miles northeast of Aberdeen. The field lies in a water depth of approxi-

mately 138 m. It was discovered by Chevron in 1984and came on stream ten years later in January 1994.The field contains estimated total oil in place reserves of approximately 1 billion barrels and has recoverablereserves of about 400 million barrels. This translates intoan approximate production capacity of 100,000 bopd.By May 1997, the daily average production was 88,516

     barrels.

Field Development: Phase 1The field development was carried out in two phases. The first involved the installation of a fixed steel plat-form with integrated production, drilling and livingquarters. This, the Alba Northern Platform (ANP), wasused to develop the northern sector of the field. TheANP was expected to produce 227 million barrels of oilfrom 20 wells. Oil is exported via the Alba FloatingStorage Unit (FSU) – the first of such to be purpose-builtfor the UK sector of the North Sea. Crude oil is thenoffloaded from the stern of the FSU to shuttle tankers.

    Alba FSULength 249.5 m, Width 42 m, Draft 23 m, Oil storage

    capacity of 872,000 bbl.

ApplicationCentrifuges from Westfalia Separator MineraloilSystems were selected to replace the existing producedwater treatment system. The decision to installcentrifuges was based on their ability to separatethe small oil particle size present where other moreestablished technologies had failed.
