The school year of 2013-4 has been a busy and productive one so far. As shown by the range of sporting, musical and extra-curricular activities con-tained in this newsletter, Stanwell pupils are certainly making the most of all the opportunities they are offered both inside and outside school. Highlights of this term have been our wonderful production of Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’, national success in the Young Enterprise scheme and the news that we have once again been placed in Band 1 by the Welsh Government’s school rankings. Many thanks to all the staff, pupils and parents who have worked to-gether to make these excellent achievements possible. I wish you all a peaceful and happy Christmas holiday. Mr D. Jones, Headteacher. Y mae campau’r flwyddyn academaidd 2013-14 gan ddisgyblion Stanwell yn drawiadol tu hwnt! Mae’n arbennig i weld y gweithgareddau all-gyrsiol di-ri yn yr ysgol a hefyd yn y gymuned. Rydym wedi mwynhau sawl uchafbwynt eleni, fel y sioe gerdd anhygoel‘Y Brydferth a’r Bwystfil’, llwyddiant cenedlaethol Menter yr Ifanc a’r newyddion ein bod ni unwaith eto wedi cael ein teliyngu â band 1 gan Lly-wodraeth Cymru. “Eco Stanwell Meetings Thursday at 3.00pm in F26”

Mrs J Laity

The Eco Stanwell committee has continued to work enthusiastically and effectively during the first term of this academic year. The dedicated members of the committee meet once a fort-night with the aim of improving and conserving both the school and local environments.

The students representing the Eco-Stanwell committee are listed below. Welcome to both old and new members, especially the younger Year 7 pupils who have joined the group since September 2013. The majority of the environ-mental activities, resources and inspiration comes from these committee members.

Environmental activities this term The pupils have completed a review of the

school environment for autumn 2013. This will be used to create an action plan for this coming year and will outline the areas

the committee has identified as important environmental concerns at school. Update of Eco code. The present Eco-

Stanwell environmental code has rep-resented the school for quite a few years. The committee has decided a new more modern design is needed. As a result pupils throughout the school have been asked to create an updated Eco code. Some entries have been handed in following Eco week but there is still time to enter the competi-tion (deadline 10th January 2014). The image below shows the present design; can you create something that will show the aims and policies of a more environmentally friendly school?

Eco Week 2013—The title for this year was “Switch Off Fortnight”. This is a national event where individuals are encouraged to switch off unused items to help reduce electricity waste. Pupils at Stanwell participated in a number of activities to support this event, including assemblies, work-sheets and poster designing. The aim was to reduce the levels of electricity used during the month of November, the biggest month for electricity use at Stanwell. Updates on the results of this scheme will follow shortly.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

. This year has already seen the Open Gold participants out on expeditions. They suc-cessfully navigated their way around Mid Wales for the 4 days to complete the expedi-tion section of the award. The participants must complete all the assessors evidence for their other sections too, including volunteer-ing, skills, physical and residential. This will then mean they get an invitation to Bucking-ham Palace! Well done to all those who com-pleted the expedition.

Over 180 Year 10 pupils are currently under-taking the Bronze award scheme. Due to such high numbers, the participants will be split into two groups for the expeditions and will need to attend the one day walk, one practice and one assessed expedition. Pupils must complete at least one section of their award prior to the overnight practice expedi-tion. The dates for expeditions for Bronze award holders are as follows:

1st February 2014(Cowbridge) 8th February 2014(Cowbridge)

12-13th June 2014

19-20th June 2014 26-27th June 2014

3-4th July 2014 The Silver award participants enrolled in Sep-tember of Year 11. All pupils continuing from the Bronze should have completed their bronze award on line and received a certificate. The Silver expedition dates are:

27-29th March 2014

3-5th April 2014 The Year 12 participants have also now en-rolled on the Gold Award. All pupils who at-tended the meeting have received a place on the gold award scheme. They will be looking forward to their first aid training starting in January. Participating pupils and their parents are re-minded that certification at any award level depends on pupils uploading evidence to their edofe accounts. I wish all our students a healthy and happy Christmas and New Year.

In October, a number of pupils from Years 7–10 took part in two day visit to London. They had opportunities to visit the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the Tate Modern, where they produced some superb studies in support of their course-work. The pupils also visited the Apollo Victo-ria Theatre where they got to watch a visually stunning production of ‘Wicked’. Pupils attending the KS3 Art Club on a Monday have been working hard to produce some beauti-ful studies for the David Shepherd Wildlife competition. They have produced a variety of work based upon the theme of ‘It’s Our World’ and have learnt how to draw a variety of differ-ent creatures. KS3 pupils have had the opportunity to enter the ‘Sail Art Competition’ promoted by Ben Ainslie and the Campaign for Drawing. A beautiful, vi-brant design by Isaac Singh of 8L has been sub-mitted to the next stage of the competition. On Tuesday 26th November, Dr Roberts visited the Art and Design Department to view the amazing pastel painting of Millais’ ‘Ophelia’ which was kindly donated to the school. This beautiful piece was accompanied by a very interesting story:

‘Back in 1999, by chance whilst out shopping, we came across a young 22 year old homeless man called Derek on the streets of Harrow in Northwest London. We had seen him a few times engaging in pavement pastel painting, then one Saturday he had a very large piece of paper taped to the pavement on which he had started to sketch an image from a small postcard that he had in his pocket. Although he had only just sketched the right corner of her face showing her right eye, we both instantly recognised the image, that of one of our favourite pre-Raphaelite paint-ing 'Ophelia' by Millais. In awe of the challenge that Derek had obviously set himself as a way to gain some income for his survival on the streets of London, we asked whether he would consider us supporting him with a view of buying the painting on completion. Surprised he said "sure, no one has ever asked me before!" We bought him lunch, left a few coins, shook hands, gave him our telephone number agreeing that there would be no time frame for its completion. We saw him periodically over the October and No-vember of 1999, and as the weather wors-ened, Derek slowly disappeared from the streets of Harrow. Time moved on, and in October 2003 we were selling our home in London to return home with new jobs and opportunities to Cardiff and Penarth. With literally 2 weeks to go until the actual move, the phone rang and it was Derek! Ophelia was completed and to our surprise Derek had been busking and painting his way around Europe for 3 years. We laughed, as parts of Ophelia had been painted in Madrid, Barcelona, Toulouse, Rome and Venice to name just a few. We took delivery of the finished painting as we were moving to Penarth. A dear friend kindly framed it, as Lyn in her own right is a master framer. Ophelia hung in our home for 8 years, and it was only when we simply did not have the wall space to show her in our new home that she finally went on to new and more creative pastures in the Art and Design department of Stanwell School! It is with sincere pleasure that we have been able to visit the school to see for ourselves Ophelia's final resting place’.

Astudiaethau Busnes The Business department has had a very busy term so far with workshops, fundrais-ing events and award ceremonies taking place. A group of pupils from Year 9 took part in the Think Big workshop in Cardiff. Pupils developed their communication and team-work skills in working with pupils from other schools to de-velop a website to pro-mote their ideas. Congratulations to Al-exandra Ruge-Hayes and Scott John who were members of the winning team (right). A selection of pupils from Years 10 and 12 have been taking part in the Young Enter-prise scheme. The scheme gives pupils the opportunity to set up and run their own businesses. The teams have been raising funds for their business ideas and for vari-ous charities by selling products at the school’s Open Day and, more recently, at the Young Enterprise Christmas Fair at IKEA, Cardiff. The teams were extremely professional and gained invaluable experi-ence whilst interacting with customers and learning to co-operate with each other.

Above and bottom left: members representing the 3 Young Enterprise teams who are competing this year. This year’s Young Enterprise teams will no doubt be inspired by Chelsea Mace (Year 13), Owain Osborne-Walsh and Amelia Rowlands (Year 11) who were successfully shortlisted for ‘PWC

YOUNG ENTERPRISE AWARD’ at the National IWA/Western Mail Business Awards 2013. Congratulations to Chelsea Mace, winner of the Young Enterprise Award.

“I just wanted to say thank you for inviting me in to school last week. I loved meeting your students and can you thank them for me for getting up and performing” (Shelley Norton)

After Christmas the Drama department will be holding KS3 Drama club on Fridays for pupils who may be interested in trying out acting, building up their confidence or simply wanting to make new friends and have fun. The Drama club will be open to all pupils in Year 7 and 8. Pupils in Year 7 have been working on basic Drama skills this term including use of dramatic devices, projection of voice and use of clear facial expressions and body language. Year 8 pupils have been working on challenging top-ics such as ‘Sam’s Story’. It is about a boy who decides to run away from home as a means to escape his problems. Pupils have applied a range of devices to explore the issue, and produced mature and meaningful work as a result. Year 9 pupils have created some fantastic work based on ‘Our Day Out’. Miss Davies and Mrs Matthews led a superb trip to a local nursing home; Year 10 pupils created and performed a Christmas-based piece of theatre. The trip was a great success and the Year 10 pu-pils worked very hard on the play. Well done!

The Drama department has had a very busy and productive term. Rehearsals for the sen-ior production of Beauty and the Beast took up a great deal of time and energy and per-formance week was an incredibly exciting time for the department. Well done to all of the cast, crew and staff who gave of their time so freely and worked so hard on the project since September.

Year 11 GCSE Drama classes have recently performed their Unit 1 Devised Drama ex-amination performances. Their hard work and commitment to making and performing interesting and dynamic stories really paid off with the positive results they achieved. Year 12 A-Level Drama and Theatre Stud-ies pupils enjoyed working with Shelley Norton from the Big Talent Agency in No-vember. The workshop was based on effec-tive audition techniques and text work, us-ing Joan Littlewood’s Oh What A Lovely War! as a basis for performance. Pupils found the workshop very beneficial and Seren Adamson went on to audition for Shelley outside of school and successfully joined the agency.

Pupils enjoyed demon-strations by TV chef, Richard Fox, on how to create interesting and tasty dishes from left-overs.

Cookery competition Congratulations all the competitors in the Year 9 and 10 cookery competition. Especially to Ellie Humphrey and Maisy Holland for joint first place in the school final. Both Ellie and Maisy will be going on to the local stages of the competition, where they will be competing against other school finalists.

Good luck girls!

It has been another great term in Design & Technology with many pupils taking advan-tage of the opportunities available. Boulogne trip Pupils from Year 8 had a fantastic trip to Boulogne in October. They visited a bou-langerie where they were able to get involved

in kneading and shaping the bread dough. They were also able to practise croissant roll-ing skills before getting to sample some of the boulangerie products, which was un-doubtedly the highlight of the trip! The following day they visited a confection-ers where they watched a demonstration of how sweets were crafted from boiling syrup and sampled the warm sweets they had just watched being made. They then journeyed into the countryside to visit a goat farm and see how the goats are reared and how the milk is used to make cheese. The trip also contained a visit to a chocolate factory where the pupils learned how chocolate is made and also how the cocoa beans were grown, har-vested and processed to become chocolate. Pupils also learned about the variety of prod-ucts that come from different parts of the co-coa tree before yet another opportunity to

For a third year running a Stanwell team of Year 9 stu-dents has participated in this introduction to engineering. Once again the team has been lucky enough to be mentored by a professional engineer from ARUP.

Six Engineering pupils attended an open day at Bristol Technology & Engineering Academy where they undertook a team challenge and learned about the ten week challenge they have entered.

The team were tasked with solving a real life engineering problem. The pupils had to work as a team and create a solution to the problem. They also had to build a model of their design. They were only given a map of the rail track, paper straws, masking tape and blue tack. The team won the day challenge, by setting a faster time than all the other schools. The team is now meeting weekly after school with an ex-ternal mentor and are designing an eco friendly classroom of the future.

Enthusiasm for engineering continues to grow in Stanwell with students participating in many engineering projects.

Engineering in Education Scheme (EESW)

Our participation in the scheme has run for over fifteen years now, and this year is no exception. Two teams from Year 12 have been linked with RWE NPower (Aberthaw) and are investigating environmental issues that staff at the plant are trying to address. Both teams have made a fantastic start and are looking forward to developing their ideas at the Cardiff University workshops during the last week of term.

Girls into Engineering

This year girls from Year 8 and 9 enjoyed partici-pating in the ‘Girls Into Engineering’ scheme which was based in Car-

The spring term will see the Economics and Business Studies departments visiting Lon-don. This will be an invaluable opportunity for pupils to gain an understanding of the current economic climate, and the impact on business. The trip takes place over two days and includes a visit to Coca Cola head Office, Lloyds of London, The Bank of England and Wimbledon. In the evening the pupils will be entertained with dinner in Covent Garden and a visit to the London Dungeons. Economics in the News

This month saw the Chan-cellor George Osbourne making his Autumn state-ment. Year 11 students took part in a lively de-bate questioning the cur-

rent policies and produced a rival manifesto of their own.

“Making sense of every day decisions”

Government and Politics Government and Politics students have been extending their understanding of the democ-ratic processes in the UK and the USA. Also, a department twitter page has been set up(@Politics2XL) which many are following. Year 13 students will be sitting their A2 mod-ule (Politics of the USA) in January and they have taken a keen interest in US voting be-haviour, political parties and pressure groups. Several members of the class have given su-perb presentations, all focusing on key issues; examples include the possible 2016 Republi-can Presidential candidates, voting behaviour, turnout levels and party factions. They have also recently completed two debates. The first questioned whether there is a tangible voting behaviour in the USA or whether it is based mainly on short-term factors. The second de-bate explored the importance of primary elec-tions and the electoral college system. Best of luck for the examinations! Year 12 students have been examining whether the UK needs a written/codified con-stitution and whether the Prime Minister en-joys too much influence. They have also stud-ied factors which influence voting behaviour in the UK. These factors include primacy is-sues such as class, ethnicity and age as well as factors which include the role of the media. Students have also analysed the current posi-tion of the Electoral System in the UK. They have recently prepared for lively debate re-garding a possible reform of the current elec-toral system of FPTP to the Alternative Vot-ing System.

Macbeth Production Year 11 pupils attended a theatre performance and workshop on Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ on Tuesday 1st October. As part of the morn-ing workshop the director and actors discussed costumes, setting, delivering soliloquies and fight scenes in the play. It was a very interac-tive experience and our pupils asked some really insightful questions and took an ac-tive part in the discussion. During the after-noon session, they watched the same actors perform the whole play which will be really beneficial to them when writing their English Literature controlled assessment.

King Lear Lectures Twenty seven Year 13 English Literature stu-dents enjoyed Sovereign Education's 'King Lear' lectures that were held in Cardiff in No-vember. The speakers were extremely knowl-edgeable and enthusiastic and really helped the students to enrich and enhance their under-standing of this excellent Shakespeare play. The topics covered a huge range to inspire pu-pils, such as exploring the Fool's role, the kinds of madness in the play, human identity and the world of King Lear. It was a huge success and very enjoyable!

Young Writers’ Squad At the end of September, two Year 7 pupils were selected to take part in the Young Writ-ers’ Squad creative writing workshop in Cogan Primary School. While they were there, they were given advice from published authors as well as taking part in the Spooky setting work-shop, where they wrote a fantastic opening to a horror story. Both Harriet Marshall (7M) and Hywel Edwards-Sim (7E) said that they had an amazing time. 'It was really useful.' Harriet enthused. 'I was really able to use some amaz-ing adjectives to add some oomph to my set-tings.' Hywel agrees, stating: 'I was taught how to vary my sentence structure to add tension to my writing. I'd love to go to the next one!'

Open Day There were some fantastic wizarding activities available in the English department for Open Evening this year. There was plenty on offer; spell-binding games, mind-boggling magical quizzes, descriptive writing activities, and cer-tainly never a dull moment to give everyone a taste of Stanwell. Honestly, who would rather go to Hogwarts?

The Open Day ‘Spelling Bee’ was also a great success. Many pupils faced the challenge and won prizes in their age group. Creative Writing Led by visiting speaker Mr S Chapman, Year 9 pupils continued with their creative writing project this term. Sixteen, Year 9 pupils sup-ported Year 6 pupils from Evenlode Primary Schools with their novels.

“Geography is everywhere and everything”

As Geography is all around us, the department has taken every opportunity this term to explore the world beyond the classroom.

In September, Year 10 Geographers took part in a day of interactive hazard management provided by the British Cartographic Society in association with the Geographical Association. During the day, entitled ‘The Restless Earth’, the pupils mapped and managed the Japanese earthquake and subsequent Tsunami using GIS strategies and

Ipad technology. Some of the winners are shown above.

Year 8 visited the Cadbury World factory in Bournville. Pupils were given a talk on the economic value of the chocolate industry, relating to the location and manufacturing of products in the developing and developed world. This gave the pupils the opportunity to discuss the issues and ethics of Fair Trade. After their talk the pupils explored the factory, sampling many varieties of chocolate, getting involved with interactive

exhibits and learning how all cocoa beans in the UK come from Ghana.

During the half term holiday, a selection of pupils from Years 10 and 11 visited the Bay of Naples, experiencing the many geographical features that the physical and human landscapes had to offer.

The students had the opportunity to see for themselves several locations of geographical interest that currently relate to their studies. These included a visit to the Island of Capri, a walk around Sorrento, exploration of the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, a climb to the top of Vesuvius, in the Vesuvius National Park, a tour of underground Naples and a visit to the sulphur fields at Solfatara.

Geography

‘Geography is important because we've got the whole world in our hands!’

During the Italian evenings pupils delighted in a range of activities from making and eating Italian pizza, beach volleyball and completing a quiz (where the tie breaker was decided in a dance off between the Year 11 boys!) During November, the Year 12 AS Geography students went to the Field Studies Centre at Nettlecombe Court near Taunton. During their stay they completed two fieldwork investigations as required for their WJEC syllabus. The physical investigation explored the effectiveness of flooding on the River Tone in Taunton, while the human investigation looked at rural settlement in the villages of Exford and Wheldon.

It was certainly an adventurous experience for the 36 pupils and 3 members of staff!

On the 9th of December, 150 Year 7 pupils visited the Field Studies Discovery Centre at

Margam Park. Whilst at the centre, pupils completed river studies techniques and team building games; an enjoyable day was had by all!

For Open Day the department focused their efforts on the theme of Rainforest Sensations in F22 and geographical games in F25. Activities included taste challenges, interactive quizzes and shake and sniff games. The displays attracted a lot of visitors and there were many questions about the subject, including the content of the GCSE and A level courses. During the term Mr J John has been working with the Year 7 and 8 geographers in in Geography club. The focus has been building a model of a volcano, here is the result so far: Keep up to date with the latest news from the geography department by following us on Twitter: Stanwell Geography@GEOG2XL

Hanes It has been another excep-tionally busy and eventful

term in the History Department. Highlights have included the October Open Evening, where pupils - and parents alike - had the op-portunity to take part in several activities, in-cluding archery, code-breaking, a crime-scene investigation on famous historical murders and the chance to enjoy an art exhibition on World War I. A good time was had by all. History Club has continued to attract many interested and enthusiastic historians. All of the members have been eager to learn about History outside the classroom and have thor-oughly enjoyed activities such as castle build-ing and role-play.

(Members of History Club re-enacting a scene from Horrible Histories!)

History pupils have studied a lot of exciting key issues this term. In Year 7 pupils have been learning about the Battle of Hastings and who became King of England in 1066. They are looking forward to studying how William the Conqueror overcame his problems and life in the Medieval period. Year 8 have enjoyed studying all about the Tudors during this Autumn term.

Topics have included Henry VIII and his six wives, the Elizabethan Religious Settlement and The Spanish Armada. In addition to learning in the classroom, 44 very excited Year 8 pupils also visited London in December. They thoroughly enjoyed their

visit to the Tower of London, espe-cially seeing the place where Anne Boleyn and Kathe-rine Howard were executed. They also had a great time exploring the cul-tural side to Lon-don; especially vis-

iting Covent Garden and seeing War Horse in the West End. Year 9 have begun the GCSE course with a highly impressive attitude and have been look-ing at key events in the battle for civil rights in the USA. Events studied have included the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Importance of Martin Luther King. To reward them for an excellent term’s work, 119 Year 9 students re-cently attended a private showing of The Butler which helped them better understand the civil rights movement. Continuing on from their superb progress last year, Year 10 have been studying the Rise of Hitler and how he transformed Germany from a democracy into a dictatorship. Year 11 are currently examining Racial Issues in the USA, 1929—2000. Topics have in-cluded WWII and the influence of individuals like Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X. They should also be proud of the very impres-sive exam results they achieved in the summer.

Most recently, Year 8 pupils have been excitedly building their own computer games using Mission Maker. Many pupils are very enthusiastic and it has given everyone the chance to show their crea-tive side. After School Clubs KS4 Homework club is up and running on Wednesday evenings. We are encouraging pupils to attend these sessions specifically if you miss lessons or need to catch up with any coursework that is outstanding. Some pupils have been making improvements to their Unit 1 GCSE coursework, most notably Harry Griffiths who has already improved one whole grade from his interim mark. Don’t leave it ‘til the last minute, come and do little but often in the IT rooms each week! From December 5th, we are running a new club for Year 7 pupils. Code club will teach pupils programming skills in a fun environment. Pupils will earn certificates for each new level reached.

Sixth Form Sixth Form computing students have been de-veloping a computer program this term to regularly test pupils’ spelling ability. Of par-ticular note are the systems developed by Ben Howe and Wei Haw Ong. Pupils in Year 13 have been developing their multimedia and graphics skills. Congratulations to Liam John and Wei Haw Ong who had near perfect scores in the mock exams in December. They have produced some excellent work so far this term of particular note are Sian Moss and Marco Sun who have developed some very professional graphics work. Key Stage 4 Year 10 pupils have been introduced to com-puter graphics through the Artwork and Imag-ing topic this term. Joseph Valek has worked hard during all lessons to produce excellent 3D character designs that demonstrates a vari-ety of well thought-out design techniques. Year 11 Option pupils are currently working in class on their Game Creation Unit, which is being enjoyed by all. Some pupils already have ideas for interesting game, these include Will Macleod, Kieran McGavin and Joshua McKenzie. Key Stage 3 It’s been an exciting and busy start to the year for Key Stage 3 pupils. Year 7 pupils have settled in well and have enjoyed their lessons in which they have been learning about their school email, Moodle and practical issues such as the effects of cyber bullying. Out-standing performances in their test came from: Enyala Banks, Emily Griffiths and Rowan Higgins. Pupils are also preparing themselves for a spreadsheet exam after the Christmas break. in the Maths department with the main focus being the November GCSE exams. Home-work Clubs on both Monday and Thursday evenings were well attended and hopefully these extra sessions, alongside the past paper revision during lesson time, will prove fruit-ful - fingers crossed for early January when the results come in! A special thank you to members of the 6th form who also helped out during these after school sessions as part of their community participation for their Welsh Baccalaureate. Selected A-level pupils took part in the ‘Senior UKMT Maths Challenge’ in Novem-ber. Both Balaji Krishna (Year 12) and Sheng Bei (Year 13) achieved Gold certifi-cates. Ieuan Jones, Tomos Davies (both Year 13) Leo Tucker, Elis Vandyck, Rho-dri Jones, Rebecca Te Water Naude, Adam Jones and Jack Davies (all Year 12) achieved Silver certificates and Keiran Brit-ten, Craig McKellar, Sion Thomas (Year 13), Stavros and Tato Katsikeas, Jack Powell, Kathleen Ahearne and Jay Kapu-ria (all Year 12) achieved Bronze certifi-cates. A number of the 6th formers named previously as well as Luke Morley, Lukas Moser, Suzie Collins, Liam Fisher (all Year 12), Harry Fudge and Dan Soltys (both Year 13) took part in the Glamorgan 6th form quiz - all thor-oughly enjoyed the experience. For the first time ever in September, a number of Year 11 to 13 girls entered the Girls Maths Olympiad (pictured below). Special mention should be given to Katie MacLeod (Year 11 - 3rd from left) who got a Distinction.

Once again the ‘Maths Mindbenders’ on Open Day was a great success. Many current and potential pupils enjoyed the five-puzzle treas-ure hunt around the Department. Those that completed the puzzles received a certificate and a prize. This year, we also ran a Simon Says competition which was won by Jessica Jones from Victoria Primary - da iawn ti! Finally, the KS3 homework club has proved to be popular again with large numbers of pupils attending. Also, another big thank you to members of the 6th form who have been as-sisting in Maths lessons, again as part of their community service. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

The Media & Film department has had another successful year in terms of our pupils’ attain-ment. The summer brought some excellent re-sults where our students performed brilliantly in both GCSE and A Level examinations. We are now in our third year of teaching Media Studies from Year 9 and our new cohort of stu-dents are more enthusiastic than ever. Pupils who have started particularly well are: Morgan Jones, Eiman Khan, Zain Yousef and Maddie Lloyd. One of our Year 13 students, Dan Skentelbery, has established the Media Club, which gives pu-pils from Years 7 and 8 the opportunity to get a taste of what Media Studies is like. They look at a diverse array of media platforms and texts such as TV Drama, for which they produced story-boards for cliff-hangers with excellent examples coming from Jake Finch, Ben Hanson and To-mos Hughes. The students got a chance to use Adobe Photoshop making film posters: Tom Croll and Ruben Jones produced outstanding work. You may have seen Amy Hann, Rowan Higgins, Dylan Moss and Phoebe Quinlan dur-ing open day producing their very own two min-ute short film within four hours!

As a department we have also supported Stanwell’s senior production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’-providing poster and programme. As you can see from the pictures below, cast members rehearsed in earnest for some time!

Years 10 & 11 have been working hard on their con-trolled assessments and have just sat their end of year exams. Pupils of note so far are: Lucy Rich-ards (10); Anton Elliott (10); Ella Robertson (10); Emily Geen (10); Timothy Burns (10); Joseph Coole (11); Georgina Bartlett (11); Joe Andres (11); Sasha Horrobin (11); Erin Clissold (11); Samuel Singh (11) and Amy Gifford (11). Ruth Blenkinsop has also joined us from Australia and has made a great start in Year 10. AS Film Studies has a larger than usual cohort this year and they are readying themselves to make some amazing films in the new year. AS Media students have recently sat an end of year internal exam and are about to embark on their first piece of course-work. A2 Film and Media students’ preparations for their final exams in May are well under way.

MFL French Club

Following the successful introduction of the Spelling Bee last year, the current Year 7 pu-pils have risen to the challenge of learning the alphabet and the fifty French words for Stage 1 of the competition. The aim of the competition is to increase knowledge of the vocabulary in a fun but competitive way. The class competitions take place soon and the two class winners will then go forward to compete in the Stanwell final in the Spring Term. We are hoping to then take a team to compete in the regional final where the Stan-well champions will test their knowledge against other local schools. A group of dedi-cated Year 7 pupils have attended an after school French club on Monday to improve their skills and to join in various games ac-tivities that have helped them learn their French.

This year we also have seen the re-launch of the Year 7 German Club under the guidance of Mrs Worman. Pupils are getting a head start for Year 8 by learning German words through all sorts of games and activities.

Stanwell-Staufen German Exchange

Plans are underway for the German Exchange. In July the German pupils will be visiting Penarth. They will be attending classes and we have lots of other exciting activities planned, including a visit to Oakwood! The exchange is

currently in its 32nd year and offers many pu-pils the unique opportunity to experience an-other culture first hand.

On the international front, Mrs Symonds will be taking a group of 55 Year 8 pupils to Paris in March next year. This is a joint venture with the Welsh department to sample the St. David’s Day celebrations which take place in Disneyland Paris.

Pupils will also be enjoying a boat trip down the Seine, a visit to the Eifel Tower and to the cathedral of Notre Dame.

Language Ambassador Ex-Stanwell pupil, Matt Levy has been work-ing with the MFL department. He is currently studying French and Translation at Cardiff University and is acting as one of their lan-guage ambassadors. This involves him helping out in various French classes and he has even taken a few lessons himself, including teaching the subjunctive to Year 13! He also talked to pupils about the advantages of studying for-eign languages. He is going to begin teacher training next year and all staff agree that with his diligent attitude and enthusiasm, he will make a great teacher and be an asset to any department.

Pupil Achievements

The Christmas term is traditionally a busy one for the Music department and this year is no exception. We continue to make use of the excellent facilities available to us and these have been further improved by the refurbish-ment of C2, one of the main teaching spaces. Extra-curricular activities continue to flourish and attendance has been excellent at Junior Orchestra, Senior Jazz, Junior Girls’ Choir, Senior Girls’ choir, Barbershop and String Group. Please see a member of the Music de-partment if you’d like to get involved with any of these groups when they recommence in 2014.

Senior Production – Beauty and the Beast

The preparations for the magical senior pro-duction of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ occupied us all from September onwards with rehearsals taking place throughout the term. The produc-tion was a real team effort with the final week of the show seeing several departments, staff and hundreds of pupils working together, sup-ported by senior management, to produce a performance that has joined the school’s rich tradition of musical theatre.

The show was cast in September proving an extremely difficult task for all those involved due to the highly impressive standard of audi-tions. The show ran from December 16th-19th (inclusive). The music of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ proved most enjoyable to rehearse.

Once more the orchestra, made up almost ex-clusively of Stanwell pupils from Year 8 to Year 13, relished the challenge of performing parts written for professional musicians.

The leader of the orchestra, Year 13 pupil Robert Cavaye commented “It’s an honour to lead this fabulous group of musicians. I’m sure the show will be spell-binding”.

Rock Academy Wales

The Rock Academy Wales initiative has gath-ered real momentum since beginning at Stan-well in 2012 with students performing several local gigs. If you are interested in developing your musi-cal talents in a slightly different way, see a member of the Music department for further details.

Year 9 and 10 GCSE Performing Arts stu-dents took part in a series of workshops at the Wales Millennium Centre in an event run by the company ‘Creative Choices’. The event was designed to give students practical ‘hands on’ experience of career paths within the in-dustry such as lighting design, stage manage-ment and marketing. The experience also links to units studied as part of their course on employment within the Performing Arts in-dustry.

Students were even lucky enough to be treated to a lunch-time concert by opera singer and former Daybreak ‘Woman of the Year’ Kate Woolveridge as part of the day.

Students were unanimous in their whole-hearted appreciation of the experience which will, we are sure, prove to be beneficial in their future studies.

Penarth Pier Pavillion

The Music department has had the privilege to be involved in two events taking place at the newly re-opened Penarth Pier Pavilion. Deputy Head Boy Zac Ghazi-Torbati co-ordinated a group of musicians that included sixth form students Alasdair Cavaye, Robert Cavaye, Rhodri Jones and Tabitha Minns who provided musical items for an event held at the impressive new building to promote tourism in the Vale of Glamorgan. Well done to all involved!

The Junior Girls’ Choir and the String Group will also be performing at the venue on Sunday 22nd December as part of the Pa-villion’s ‘Advent Sundays’ programme of events. The chosen repertoire will include popular music as well as more traditional festive items. The concert will take place from 3 o’clock onwards and admission is free. Mince pies and other seasonal refresh-ments will be available for audience mem-bers.

It is hoped that the department will continue to build links with this exciting new local venue.

Year 13 Concert Trips

Year 13 Students have attended two trips this term. The first to St David’s Hall to see a per-formance given by the BBC National Orches-tra of Wales which featured Shostakovich’s 8th Symphony which links with one of their A2 set works. The second trip was to Cardiff University to see the Carducci string quartet perform a series of pieces again linked to their examination.

As well as being enjoyed by pupils, the con-certs also gave students valuable insight into the music they are studying and will hopefully give their preparations for their final exam an extra boost!

Pupil News

Year 9 pupil Emily Alford was recently suc-cessful in gaining the role of choirboy in Welsh National Opera’s autumn production of ‘Tosca’.

As well as performances in the WNO’s home venue of the Wales Millennium Centre, Emily has also been on tour with the company, per-forming in venues from Llandudno to South-ampton. Emily hopes to one day forge a ca-reer in the opera world and we wish her every success, well done Emily!

Rugby

Year 7 It has been a very good start to the rugby year for a large group of pupils. The group has trained really well and are starting to play a very good and expansive style of rugby. Aled Rees, Drew Musa, Ryan Allen and Daniel Hayes have been the backbone of a very good set of backs. The forwards are now coming together and proving to be a very ro-bust unit and are well led by Evan Lloyd, Max Crandon and Will Hardy. It is still early days but if the group continue to work hard in training their hard work could see them reach the Vale final in May. Year 8 The Year 8 rugby team are again proving to be an excellent all round side with a number of exciting new players. Ben Hayes, Mat-thew Barber, Ben Hanson and Will Hall have been ever present in the back division in all games. The forwards are continuing to make progress and are proving to be a real handful in the games, the side is well led by George Cowley who has had excellent sup-port from Ellis Smith and Cai Lloyd.

Year 9 The Year 9 rugby team has had a very good start to the season, winning 4 out of their 5 matches against teams such as Ysgol Bro Morgannwg, Barry Comprehensive and Llantwit Major. The team, captained by Geraint Williams can always be relied on to put in a good performance no matter who the opposition are! With an abundance of power-ful and skilful players in the side this could be a very promising season for Year 9.

Year 10 So far the Year 10 rugby team are unde-feated in the Vale league with only 2 matches left. Captained by Spencer Robin-son, the team seems to have gelled this sea-son, producing some outstanding perform-ances particularly against strong teams such as Ysgol Bro Morgannwg and Cowbridge School. Many players in this side have also repre-sented the Vale of Glamorgan Schools rugby team on a regular basis this year. They include Joseph Short (c), Rhys Jones, Spencer Robinson, Owen Lloyd, Morgan Rees, Joshua James, Basil Crack, James Price, William Gale, Alex Drake and Rhys Picton.

Year 11 Year 11 have had an unfortunate start to the season having 3 teams cancel matches against them, however they still managed to progress to the second round of the Welsh Cup in which they lost to a well drilled Whitchurch side. Dan Watts (Capt.), Soli-man Kahn, Edward Drake and Caleb Docking have also represented the Senior Rugby Team and Cardiff Blues U16s. Senior Rugby Although they have suffered with many in-juries including to their Captain Harry Roberts, the Senior Rugby Side (now cap-tained by Sam Sellick) have maintained their undefeated run of 19 matches in the

Well done to all of our gymnasts who rep-resented the school in the Welsh Schools’ Novice Competition at the National Sports Centre. Many congratulations to all of our competitors, for many of them it was their first competition experience. Our boys’

team consisting of Jake Carr, Dafydd Morgans and Ieuan Murray, performed extremely well and achieved 3rd place, bringing home bronze medals. Special mention to Chloe Poole and Chloe Fletcher who have assisted with the club this year. Their help and support continues to be greatly appreciated.

Trampolining A number of our pupils represented the school in trampolining recently in the Welsh Schools’ Trampolining Competition at the National Sports Centre. We had numerous teams and individual competitors in the beginners, novice and elite categories. Well done to all of our pupils who took part, they did extremely well and for many this was also the first time that they had ever competed. Special mention to Miss Lane who has assisted with the club on a Monday evening and who has given up her own time on the weekend to assist with judg-ing on the day. Her support continues to be appreciated.

Psychology

Year 12 students have been studying Ap-proaches in Psychology and, as part of the Cognitive Approach, produced some excellent animations and videos giving examples of at-tributions and explaining the complex con-cepts behind it. The Department was particu-larly impressed with the work produced by Catrin Morgan, Ellie Munro, Alice Not-tingham and Tori Williams.

Year 13 have been studying Research Meth-ods and have carried out a number of interest-ing investigations into a range of aspects of behaviour including personality, memory and even mobile phone usage. The results were then analysed and presented to the rest of the class. Alongside this, students have delivered presentations on a range of fascinating Psy-chology topics as part of their Welsh Bacca-laureate qualification. Luke Waddon’s pres-entation on Social Psychology applied to the London riots was particularly impressive.

A number of Year 13 students have also been busy preparing their UCAS applications to apply to University to study Psychology. We are delighted that so many students will be continuing their studies in the subject beyond this year.

Our Student Voice group met again this term and gave us some useful feedback and ideas about Psychology lessons. As a result of some of their suggestions the Department will be starting a new discussion group next term with the aim of exploring topics from outside the specification in more depth.

In September, the Psychology Department moved into its own suite. This has created a base for the Department and the opportunity to create new displays and use brand new ICT fa-cilities.

Health and Social Care

Students of Health and Social Care have been privileged to welcome a number of visitors into lessons this term to talk about their work in a range of Health, Social Care and Early Years settings. The Year 12 students have been visited by Early Years professionals from a local pri-mary school and childminders as they complete their coursework on early years provision in the local area. Year 13 students welcomed a visitor from a local residential home to share informa-tion about their work and the students were also invited in for a visit next term. Such visits help the students gain a real insight into how what they are learning about in lessons is applied in a real care setting.

Open Day The RE Department had a steady stream of visitors during the evening. Artefact displays provided a colourful background and visitors enjoyed taking part in the quizzes with many adding to the “What are your Christmas tradi-tions?” board.

Making a difference Year 10 pupils have raised funds for Poon-cholai children’s home this year, and it was interesting for visitors to see the range of pub-licity material promoting the work of Poon-cholai produced by Stanwell students and pre-sented in the wall displays in the department area. Stanwell pupils have raised enough money to continue sponsoring the two pupils we have supported for the last 5 years and with the ad-ditional money collected we have sent Christ-mas presents for the children.

Above are some of the some of the Year 10 pupils who raised money this term for Poon-cholai Children’s Home. The following photos are of the two pupils sponsored by Stanwell. The first photo is of Pravenkumar and the sec-ond is of Essakiyammal. We look forward to hearing from them after they receive their Christmas gifts and cards which were also pur-chased from the money raised.

RE Club Over the last few weeks, members of the RE club have been working very hard preparing Christmas decorations ready to decorate our Christmas tree at St Augustine's Annual Christ-mas Tree Festival. This year, we are focusing on the idea of Christmas around the world for our entry. We have chosen our top 25 traditions, based on the Advent countdown, to help explain some of the wacky and wonderful ways people mark this special time of year all around the world. Among our favourites have been the idea of BBQ on the beach in Australia, the early-morning roller skate to church in Venezuela and the tradition of German children leaving a boot or a shoe outside their bedroom door in the hope of finding a tree branch covered in sweets the following morning. Using photographs, flags, recipe cards and some model replicas, are aim is to represent each of these traditions on our tree.

Chemistry The Chemistry department has made a very busy and productive start to the academic year with both Year 10 and Year 11 pupils completing their GCSE controlled assessment tasks. This is an important part of the final grade and all pupils have been mature and diligent in their approach to the work. The AS Level results in the summer were good with some outstanding individual performances. Of particular note was Eve Carter who only dropped 11 marks in all three of her AS Level exams, with Tomos Davies, Omar Ghandour and Robert Jones also achieving excellent results. A number of sixth form pupils took part in a “Classroom Medics Workshop” where they looked at blood pressure measurement, X-ray and CT scan analysis as well as using a patient simulator named Stan the

human manikin to make medical diagnoses. Open Day was a great success with bumper crowds coming to watch the “Flashes, Bangs and Chemistry Magic”

demonstrations. The Chemistry staff were ably assisted by Ben Croll, Chloe Dicks and Annie Higgins. The pupils impressed the visitors with their knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject, as well as their competence when doing the demonstrations.

Biology This is always a very busy time of year as we head towards external examinations for GCSE and A Level. The AS Level results in the summer were good with some outstanding individual performances. Of particular was Robert Jones who achieved full marks, 300/300 on the AS papers. A number of Year 12 students visited the national museum in Cardiff to take part in celebrations to mark the centenary of Alfred Russell Wallace, co-discoverer of the theory of natural selection. Year 12 have quickly settled into their studies and a number visited St. Cyres School in October to attend the ‘Genetics Roadshow’ organised by Gene Park Wales. In December Jamal Akhtar, Emily Thomas, Leo Tucker and Robert Turton took part in the ‘Brain Bee’ at Cardiff University, a quiz and study day for those interested in neuroscience. Open Day was also a great success with large numbers of visitors taking the opportunity to carry out a range of experiments. The hard work of Molly Britton and Erin Clissold was appreciated by all of the teachers.

The Biology department has also made a late entry into the world of social networking with our own Twitter feed, this can be followed @Stanwell_Biol. Become a ‘follower’ for latest departmental news and other related tweets!

Science

Mr P Johnson

Applied Science Solving crime has been the order of the day in Applied Science this term, with Year 13 working on the practical techniques associated with Analytical Chemistry in the context of Forensic Evidence. A Forensic Science Report forms part of their A2 coursework and they have to write a report on a particular case. It is sometimes difficult to find out the information, so it was very exciting to have a visit from a Crime Scene Supervisor, Detective Sergeant Andy Jenkins who is a very experienced CSI Manager who covers Pontypridd and Merthyr Areas. We were lucky he could fit us into his busy schedule once again and we hope he continues to visit us in his retirement. Year 11 work was sent to the exam board so that by March we will know the results of the first qualification. The students are now working towards their second qualification. Years 10 and 12 will have to work hard to live up to the standards set this year!

“pupils visited Cardiff University’s Physics department”

Physics The Physics department has had a very busy term with controlled assessment practical exams being done in Years 10 and 11. In addition many pupils in Years 10, 11 and 13 are preparing for external modules in January 2014. In September, 30 Year 12 and 13 pupils visited Cardiff University’s Physics department for their annual sixth-form Physics conference. In December, 28 Year 10 and Year 11 pupils attended the annual Institute of Physics lecture at Cardiff University. The AS results in the summer were good with the following pupils Tomos Davies, Daniel Soltys and Eve Carter all achieving very high UMS marks. Open Day was a great success with many children and parents discovering how many toys have their origins with Physics alongside demonstrations of rockets and balloons being squashed on a bed of nails.

The Welsh department has had a very active term! We enjoyed the inaugural Year 7 transition trip to Llangrannog in September and also took a group of 30 pupils to the Glan-llyn Urdd camp in November. Pupils were encouraged to take part in a wide variety of outward bounds activities including orienteering, climbing and raft building on the banks of beautiful Lake Tegid in Snowdonia.

Rory Skinner in Year 7 impressed us with his creative writing, he wrote an exciting poem about colours, which he named Lliwiau! Lliwiau! Lliwiau!

Following the Bitesize Workshop, Rhys, Mat-thew and Tom were asked to share their opin-ions on the brand new software TouchCast in a Vox Pops interview with the BBC. This app lets you record a video and overlay widget – like elements that can hold web pages, maps and more. TouchCast is a very interesting con-cept that mixes video with the web. The boys had the opportunity to explain how they felt this new development in technology will change education in the future.

Elizabeth McCulloch of Year 10 is a keen swimmer and organised a team to represent Stanwell in the Urdd swimming gala in early December. The team was very successful in all categories. Lloyd Hanson came 2nd in the 100m freestyle and 1st in the 100m butterfly. Andrew Flanigan was 1st in the 100m breast-stroke and the 200m individual medley.

“Lliwiau, Lliwiau, Lliwiau”

Three pupils from Year 12 were invited to attend a BBC Bitesize Welsh second language focus group at the BBC headquarters in September. They had the opportunity to meet the producers of BBC Wales Interactive and Learning and share their ideas on the content of the website. Matthew Holder, Tom Chandler and Rhys Savory spent the day brainstorming and sharing their experiences and ideas as Welsh Second Language GCSE students. Their input and creative ideas were very much appreciated by the team and Marc Real, the assistant producer, was very impressed with the boys’ readiness to share their opinions.

It has been a busy term for the three Workskills classes. The Year 9 group have started the ‘Finance & Money Skills’ course and have com-pleted the first three units learning about income and expenditure and how to budget. The Year 10 group started the main Workskills course looking at dif-ferent types of unpaid work. On the 11th November, Natalie Sargent from the Vale Volunteer Bureau came into school and gave an interesting talk on volunteering and discussed the range of opportunities available to pupils. The Year 11 group reflected on their work experience placement in the sum-mer and on school Open Day, three year 11 pupils; Thomas Jones, Austin Squire-Wood and Harvey Valvo, set up a games skills challenge in G15 rais-ing £20 for Cancer Research. The Year 9 and Year 10 pupils have un-dertaken litter picks with Keep Wales Tidy and the Vale of Glamorgan Visible Services Depart-ment. On the 14th November, 23 Year 9 and 10 pu-pils joined Richard Weaver of Keep Wales Tidy, they set off from school and walked along the Old Railway Line footpath from Archer Road up to Cliff Tops cafe in Penarth.

Pictured are Year 9 pupils Rhys Walker, Mat-thew Binding & Cameron Jenkins collecting litter along the old railway line in Penarth.

On the 28th Novem-ber, 20 Year 9 and 10 pupils visited Barry Is-land. This is the 5th year that Workskills classes have worked with the Vale of Glamor-gan Visible Services. Unusually for a Workskills litter pick in Barry, the weather was excellent with no wind or rain!

The pictures show Year 9 pupils Morgan Jones, Morgan Evans, Sam Jones, Katie Thomas & Katie Hudd collecting litter from the Barry Island car park. It was an enjoyable afternoon for all who participated.

For the first time at Stanwell, 240 of the new Year 7 pupils went to Llangrannog for three days to complete a variety of teambuilding activities. The purpose of the trip was for pupils to develop positive relationships within form classes, across the year group and with their teachers, as well as improving their Welsh language skills. The activities included horse riding, go-karting, the high ropes course, orienteering, problem solving and trampolining to name a few.

The pupils gained confidence with their peers over the three days, forming solid friendships within both sides of the year. A number also demonstrated some independence and coped exceptionally well away from home.

The pupils’ enthusiasm towards all the set tasks was outstanding. They supported each other in their groups so even those pupils that were nervous about some of the tasks had a go and in most cases completed the task very

successfully. It is hoped that the experiences and friendships made in these three days will help them throughout their time at Stanwell.

The staff at the centre were excellent reinforcing safety as paramount whilst also ensuring it was a fun experience for the pupils. They responded to being spoken to in the Welsh language and the use of Welsh was implemented throughout the time of the visit.

The pupils are to be congratulated on their enthusiasm and behaviour and many thanks to staff for their support on the trip.

We will look forward to this visit continuing next year.

This has been a busy and exciting term for Year 8. All pupils have embarked enthusiastically on the ‘Real Game’. This is an effective and fun way of giving pupils a glimpse of what it is like living and working as an adult. Mr Pritchard from Careers Wales has also been helping to prepare our pupils for their option choices later on this year. Look out for more updates on Moodle regarding option choices in the new year. Pupils have also enjoyed a varied pastoral framework. In assemblies, recognition has been given to world events, historical memorials, activities and the precepts of the week. Assembly themes have included Olympic Values & Remembrance, with further presentations from former World Boxing Champion Nicky Piper regarding the work of the George Thomas Hospice, Barnardo’s & the School Charity Committee. PC Mudie has also delivered a number of informative sessions on drug awareness to individual forms, as well as advising pupils about safety on Halloween and Bonfire Night. Pupils in Year 8 have also shown their generosity and compassion by participating in a range of worthwhile causes to help those less fortunate than themselves. Numerous cake sales, non-uniform days and a ‘wear your Christmas jumper day’ have helped to raise a considerable sum of money for organisations like Children In Need and Save the Children. Well done Year 8! Many exciting trips have also taken place this term. Pupils enjoyed sampling the delights at Cadbury World and also experienced the culinary wonders of France on the trip to Boulogne earlier in the term. The recent history trip to London was also hugely popular. Pupils enjoyed visiting a range of historical sites, such as the Tower of London. They were also inspired by the quality of

the West End production War Horse. Many pupils were also rewarded for their continuing progress, endeavour and service to the school on the Year 8 trip to watch The Hobbit 2, which capped off a very productive and pleasing term in Stanwell. We wish the year group a restful and enjoyable Christmas break and look forward to another exciting and fruitful term in the new year. This year our School Council representatives are Thomas Atkinson and Bronwen Pearce. Both have taken on the responsibilities of the role with great enthusiasm and maturity, adding much to the School Council meetings. Each form has elected form representatives for the Year 8 Council. Their job is to act

as the link between pupils and the School Council and they have a great opportunity to raise issues that pupils feel are important to them to help improve the whole school environment. They Year 8 form representatives are as follows: 8T– Kaitlin Daly and Daniel Sheppard

It has been a busy term for Year 11 as pupils complete controlled assessments and work to-wards achieving their GCSEs in the summer of 2014. The Maths GCSEs and mock examinations have now finished and Year 11 pupils will re-ceive their school reports on Thursday, 23rd January 2014.

During their pastoral lessons, Year 11 pupils have had a variety of outside agencies involving them in workshops and discussion groups. Fire Service officers have spoken to a number of forms on Road Safety and PC Emma Mudie has talked to pupils about sexual consent, Halloween and Fireworks. Mr Alun Pritchard of Careers Wales has started his one-to-one career inter-views with pupils.

Alongside this, assemblies have taken place where recognition has been given to world events, activities and the precepts of the week including Respect, Values, Remembrance, Is it OK to fail?, Anti-bullying week, World Aids Day and Eco-School Week. Also, making use of the school facilities, Year 11 have looked at dis-ability in the iPad room and the results of dan-gerous driving using ‘The Crash’ resources in the Learning Resource Centre.

Homework Clubs have been running throughout the term and will continue right up to the sum-mer GCSE examinations. We encourage all pu-pils to take part in these sessions if possible in order to fulfil their potential at GCSE. Blwyddyn12 It has been a pleasure to welcome

the students of Year 12 into the Sixth Form of Stanwell School and it is particularly pleasing to see that nearly 80% of last year’s Year 11 have decided to continue with their studies at our school. We would also like to extend a warm welcome to the 5 students who have joined us from other schools. They have really hit the ground running this term with all stu-dents completing the Team Enterprise task which forms the backbone of the Working With Others Essential Skill as part of the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification. Students were placed in groups and each group were asked to design a product to sell on the school’s Open Day on October 8th. We are pleased to report that all groups made a profit which was then donated to the charity of their choice. The ’Market Place’ on Open Day was certainly a vibrant scene of colour and serious business deals!

Selling candles as part of the Team Enterprise task . We are very grateful to the local business peo-ple who gave up their time to support this event as part of the Dragons’ Den. Each team had to present their ideas to the ‘Dragons’ in order to make a bid for a loan of up to £20 to

Year 12 entrepre-neurs.

Welsh Baccalaureate tasks continue with stu-dents settling into their Community Participa-tion placements. Many have chosen to support younger pupils with their learning in various classes whilst others have decided to broaden their horizons by working in the community through volunteering in local charity shops or supporting younger children in primary schools. All members of the year group have also been asked to start looking into possible work experi-ence placements for June 2014. Mr Deighton-Jones has provided all students with Careers Wales log in details with the advice that it would be best to get this organised as soon as possible. Interim reports were issued to all students at the beginning of November detailing teachers’ views on the initial progress made in all sub-jects. A full written report will be issued to-wards the end of January in response to the in-ternal examinations recently sat. Thank you to all parents who attended the Sixth Form Infor-mation Evening on October 22nd. Information was given on the external assessment dates, forthcoming events and expectations of the school. This information is now available on Moodle. Many students have been giving their future career paths serious consideration. There has been an impressive response to the super - curricular opportunities advertised on the daily bulletins with many students applying for places on Preparation for Law courses and opportuni-ties for those planning to study Medicine, Vet-erinary Sciences and Nursing. Prospective Ox-bridge students have also started to research the process and requirements. We would like to end by taking this opportunity to wish all members of the year group a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Blwyddyn13 The students of Year 13 have hit

the ground running this September. Naturally, the UCAS process has been the priority for many. Each student was assigned a UCAS tu-tor in order to provide help and support with their application and personal statement. The majority of students have now applied to their chosen universities and many have received conditional offers. 18 students have applied for Oxbridge and several others applied through the CUKAS process hoping to study at schools of Music and Drama. At the start of the year, Adelle Rushton from Bristol Univer-sity came in to talk to the students about writ-ing personal statements and Ewan Hopkins of Cardiff University also gave a presentation to the year group on interview techniques. Mock interviews have been arranged for those stu-dents who expect this to be part of the process at their chosen universities. We would like to thank Martin Blamey, formerly of Careers Wales, for his continued support in organising these invaluable 'practice runs' for our pupils. Students who do not wish to study at univer-sity have been receiving help and guidance via the Careers Officer and Mr R Deighton-Jones (our Work Related Education co-ordinator). Advice was given on writing letters of applica-tion, producing CVs and where to look for em-ployment opportunities. We wish all students the very best of luck with their applications and plans for the future and we hope that all are able to fulfil their ambitions within higher education and employment. Two of the Essential Skills within the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification were completed this term. All students were required to submit their work on Problem Solving which ad-dressed the issue of deciding on which path to take when leaving Stanwell in the summer. In addition, all were required to submit their Communication Portfolio which contained written, reading and presentation tasks under-taken by the students.

All members of the year group have now re-ceived their examination timetables for the January session. The number of exams sat by pupils will differ greatly depending on subjects and decisions to re-sit AS modules. As a result, no block period of study leave has been organ-ised and lessons will continue as normal throughout the period. In its place, individual study leave programmes will be organised for each student in the year group following a dis-cussion between students and the pastoral team. This will allow those who do have exams the time in which to prepare thoroughly whilst also enabling teaching of A2 topics to continue with as little disruption as possible.

On a lighter note, many of our Year 13 students are involved in both cast and orchestral roles, with Zachary Ghazi Torbati, Luke Waddon and Alys Wilcox undertaking principal parts. We congratulate and thank them all for their contri-bution to the show’s success.

It is with sadness that we reflect upon the death of one of our Year 13 students, Robert Togden. Robert had been very unwell for some time and sadly passed away in November this year.
