Anonymous FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and Telnet
FTP provides a simple way to move files across the Internet by giving user
account and a password for authenticated users.
The term anonymous means that user does not have to have a previously
established user account and password on the system. In other word, a user
may log on as anonymous and use his e-mail address as the password.
Telnet is terminal emulation protocol commonly used on the Internet. It allows
a user to log onto and run a program from a remote terminal or computer.
Telnet was originally developed for ARPAnet and is part of the TCP/IP
communications protocol. As software, telnet is important to display text-only
information. Only primitive graphics can be displayed on a telnet application.
The terms VT100, VT102, VT220, and so on represent different standards for
displaying text on the screen.
Although graphical Internet applications like Netscape and Internet Explorer arethe most popular method of displaying information on the Internet, telnet
software is still necessary. Most universities (especially libraries) must be
accessed using telnet.
